Which Version of Disk Warrior will repair hard drive on iBook G4?

A while back I determined with help from folks on this forum that I needed to buy Disk Warrior to repair the hard drive. I've procrastinated in buying Disk Warrior just because my wife has been sharing her MacBook with me (yes, I should just buy another but want to get the data off of this and would be happy using the iBook a while longer before spending the grand or more for another MacBook).
The problem is, I don't know which version of Disk Warrior to buy. Can anyone help me?
Quick History:
I have an iBook G4 that has a ton of data that I don't want to lose, but it won't start. It just stays on the gray screen with the Apple symbol and tries to boot up...you can hear the hard drive...and then just turns off.
With this in mind, I can't figure out which OS I have. I am pretty sure it is either 10.3 or 10.4, but I don't know for sure. The discs I have are for 10.2.1 (the original OS), but when I purchased the computer from a former roommate of mine back in mid/late 2005, he loaded it with the most current OS, which I don't have the disks for so I don't know what it is.
When I research Disk Warrior it sounds like I need to know which I have to determine whether 3 or 3.0.3 or 4 is what I need. Is there anyone who can assist me with this dilemma?
Morris

Morris,
I hesitate to say "yes", but that is my gut feeling. I would do some research/Google searches and in the mean time maybe another discussions member will have the answer to that.
Calling Alsoft is always an option, too. Their tech people are very knowledgeable about their products and applications.
I went right from version 3.3(?) to version 4.2, so I don't have personal experience with 4.0. I should also add that if you own an older version of DW, Alsoft will send you the current version (4.2) for $50 as long as you have the registration number of your old version.

  • Mac Mini has crashed - Disk Warrior and External Hard Drive Question.

I have Mac Mini that has crashed.  I purchased Disk Warrior and was able to boot from the CD.  Disk Warrior allowed me to see my files again but there is no way I can move them back onto my hard drive.  I cannot grab them.  Before I go into specifics....If I purchase an external hard drive and try to hook it up to my Mac Mini, will I be able move these files to this new external hard drive?  Is this a possibility?
Or will my new external hard drive need to go through a set up phase - which might be impossible since hard drive I'm trying to take the files from is technically dead?
Sorry - I'm a novice at these things.

Hello, no apologies needed for being a novice, great you asked!
YES, depends where you buy the Drive, it may need Formatting first to Mac OS Extended...
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://Pondini.org/OSX/DU.html
These generally come Mac Ready, & get Firewire if you have a Firewire port, much faster...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Then in DiskWarrior, hold Option or alt key when selecting Internal to repair, that will do the best job of Scavenging the directory & provide a whole new Drive icon to copy or clone your info over to the external drive.

  • FYI: New version of Disk Warrior seems to hang when run with Snow Leopard

FYI: It seems that the new version of Disk Warrior hangs when run in Snow Leopard

I have been using DW 4.2 on 10.5.8 and the speed-up was the first thing I noted, too, so it isn't just SL.
Now if it would only 'come up for air' and respond to input to move window (so I can put it where I can see it if needed) I'd like that.
There is a 23 page review of Snow Leopard on Ars. On page 22:
People sometimes ask what, exactly, is wrong with HFS+.
Aside from its obvious lack of the features just listed, HFS+ is limited in many ways by its dated design, which is based on HFS, *a twenty-five year-old file system.*
To give just one example, the centrally located Catalog File, which must be updated for each change to the file system's structure, is a frequent and inevitable source of contention. Modern file systems usually spread their metadata around, both for robustness (multiple copies are often kept in separate locations on the disk) and to allow for better concurrency.
Practically speaking, think about those times when you run Disk Utility on an HFS+ volume and it finds (and hopefully repairs) a bunch of errors. *That's bad, okay?* +*That's something that should not happen*+ with a modern, thoroughly checksummed, always-consistent-on-disk file system unless there are hardware problems (and a ZFS storage pool can actually deal with that as well). And yet it happens all the time with HFS+ disks in Mac OS X when various bits of metadata to get corrupted or become out of date.
Apple gets by year after year, tacking new features onto HFS+ with duct tape and a prayer, but at a certain point there simply has to be a successor—whether it's ZFS, a home-grown Apple file system, or something else entirely. My fingers are crossed for Mac OS X 10.7.
If Disk Utility was reliable in mapping out weak sectors (it is not) and report/log errors. But it doesn't and I trust my data to other file systems when possible. We've come to expect and depend on 3rd party utilities and that Apple First Aid doesn't fix every possible error.
Scanning one drive for errors can take a long time. Maybe it needs to be done, maybe in the background. With 2TB drives it gets worse. Spending hours to scan for errors??? I've set TechTool Pro to concurrently scan anywhere from one to a dozen volumes at once.
An ounce of prevention, as they say, is worth a pound of cure.

  • Can anyone please tell me which version of Photoshop Elements will download easily and run with mac 10.5.8 Snow Leopard?

I posted a question which was: Can anyone please tell me which version of Photoshop Elements will work with Mac 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.  Then this window popped up saying mark this discussion with as a question and this window.  I have no idea how this works. It already is a question and if I need to emphasize that, how does this window that looks like a Word editing window, help me do that?Downloading, Installing, Setting Up

You asked the question in the title area instead of the area where the body of your posting is intended to be.  No fault of yours - they need to make the form clearer.
Check the system requirements for the various versions of Photoshop Elements and see which suits your system.  Adobe only sells the most recent versions of their software, so if you need an older version you will need to find a vendor for it.

  • Help freeing up disk space on external hard drive

trying to copy itunes library to external hard drive only to find i have insufficient space (need 100GB). deleted prior two itunes libraries and try again, but fail because external hard drive space is still insufficient. empty trash.  eject external hard drive and reattach the thing. it still has insufficient space. make a new folder on external hard drive and copy all folders to this folder to see how much space all the files consume--the entire folder is 100GB, it is a 500 GB external drive, and it has only 21 GB free.
Why is the external hard drive which should have 400GB free, not freeing up the remaining space?
imac mac os x version 10.5.8 (free on hard drive about 20GB, so can't copy 100 GB back to hard drive and format or do whatever to external drive)
external hard drive is G-DRIVE mobile USB, purchased from apple I think.
OmniDiskSweeper used and just showed 100 GB used and 20 some Free. No huge files in trashes or temporary files.
Used DiskAid , and disk is normal, tried to repair but nothing to repair.
    Suggestions please?

It sounds like there are multiple partitions on the drive, or perhaps only a small one with a lot of unallocated space.
See what Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) says.  Click the top line for the drive (with the make and size) in the sidebar.   You should see something like this:
See if there's more than one partition (indented under the main line).
Also see what's shown for the Total Capacity.

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?

Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?
In other words, because the MacBook Air only has 120 gbs of hard drive space & my old hard drive, from a Lenovo, has 500 gbs of hard drive space (and I have over 120 gbs of music), I’m looking to manage my iTunes music from the external hard drive permanently. Upon attempting to access the iTunes library held on the external hard drive the following message comes up: “The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file”.  Is there a way to get around this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.
    Sept. 2010, Consolidate selected content - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2589812 and April 2014, https://discussions.apple.com/message/25414357
"...selected the new tracks directly in iTunes, Control-clicked on the selection, and saw that now you can consolidate selected items." - http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090919000326840
Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.

I print a PDF.  I want it to save, no matter which program I print from, to my hard drive.  How do I do this?

    Hi print to file default,
Please forgive me, but I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to do. Are you trying to print a PDF to PostScript (that's typically what "print to file" refers to). Or, are you simply creating PDF files, and you want them to save to you hard disk? I'm not sure why you would want to print a PDF file "to file."
Are you perhaps using the Create PDF Desktop printer, which automatically saves files to your Acrobat.com online account? (If so, please be aware that Create PDF Desktop printer will be retiring shortly. Please see Adobe CreatePDF Desktop Printer is no longer available.)
Please help me understand what you're trying to achieve, and we'll get this sorted out.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Mac utility cannot repair hard drive

My Mac does not start up. Safe start does not work and utility disk repair, starts then says it cannot repair hard drive. I have everything backed up on carbanite. If I erase the hard drive, how do I reinstall operrating software? I purchased the upgrade online and did not get a disk.

    Here's how it's done.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

i had a power mac g4 into which i put 3, 320 gb PATA hard drives in a raid slice config so that it worked as one drive needless to sat that i lost the g4 to a surge but the drives are good. now i have an imac, how can i recover the info off those drives. can i put the drives in external cases and plug them all in, will the imac see them as a raid slice then  help please

    Before you have another accident:
Buy a UPS of good quality and sufficient to your needs.
I would have to assume that the drives were connected to a PCI PATA card, hopefully. Otherwise, well RAID and having drives on the same bus (master and slave).
And no backup, none at all...
Get your hands on a G4.
Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft maybe.
If they were SATA and running on PCI SATA controller, very popular and common really in G4s, more options would be open.

My itunes library was on my PC.  About two years ago I switched it to my Seagate server/hardrive. (itunes-preferences-advanced-change library). Last summer (2012) I bought a macbook, which seems to access the seagate server hard drive fine for word docs, excel spreadsheets, etc. It also seems to have started its own library which is not complete. My PC died this summer (I still have it though).
Now when syncing any of the multiple devices (ipods, ipads, iphones) that we have with my mac book, itunes states that "an error occurred" or the "app cannot be found".  Itunes wants me to erase the device and sync with my macbook. The message "The iPhone “Renee’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library on “Renee PC”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."appears.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • I see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder

i see that i have a problem after installing my new hard drive on my macbook pro mid 2009 version. I put a new hard drive, with all of my information from my old drive installed on it, into the computer. but now have the blinking question mark folder. I see that it means that it isn't reading the new hard drive.
did i miss a step between transferring all of my information from my old hard drive to the new hard drive and installing the new hard drive into the computer. I believe that i installed properly. it was quite easy.
    thanks for your help

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

Well, there are different versions of Sata.  See:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA#Revisions
I think this is the info someone would need:
You may want to post machine info.
blue apple > about this mac > more info button. Click on the hardware line. It has a little triangle in front of the word hardware.
    Leave out the serial number.
    Example:
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: PowerMac4,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (33.11)
    Number Of CPUs: 1

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.
