Whining Sound - Reason for Replacement?

My new 2.0GHz white MacBook has a faint whining sound that continuously comes from the upper-left side of the keyboard. My friend's has it and I know others that have this problem as well. I don't know if it is a problem with the logic board or what. It may just be completely normal. My computer is perforiming at 100% and the temperature, with the new Firmware update, tends to hover around 98.6 degrees F after a good 1/2 hour of use or so.
I just need to know if this is normal or not. If not, is Apple willing to replace/fix MacBooks with this problem? I have not spoke with Apple yet. I don't live anywhere near an Apple Store, but there is an AASP nearby.
Is there anyone else with this problem? Please help.
2.0 GHz MacBok, White   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac Newbie

"Normal" is a relative term around these parts
I would say that, if you can hear something that doesn't sound normal to you, it couldn't hurt to give Apple a call and talk it through or take it to an Apple store (I know you said you didn't have one near) and have them give it the once over. The worst thing they can say is that it's fine. If you still feel strongly about it, it's up to you what you would do next.
I'd give them a call.

  • Apple helpline confirm reasonable for an ipad to only last 2 years.

Have an ipad 1 3g model, cost approx £500. 2 years 3 months old.
Problem when charging if it reaches 100%, ipad will completely shut down. Can take up to an hour to reboot.
Spoke to Apple.  Realise I can record calls for personal use but they cannot be used as evidence in court.
Lady confirmed not unreasonable for the battery to give up after 2 years.
Sales of goods act allows up to 6 years to claim for faulty items. However im being advised a battery is a consumable and therefore not covered.
Firstly as yet we have no idea this is a battery fault, its fine once its rebooted ok.
Secondly, ipads1 I believe they even glue the battery in, warranties invalid if you try and replace the battery, device is made so the average consumer cannot replace battery.
This to me makes it an integral part of the ipad, not a consumable part that can be swapped in and out.
Therefore the lady at apple is confirming it is bot unreasonable to have a faulty ipad after 2 years but that apple will not assist. I was even told they could replace my ipad1 for £206. With another ipad1!  Have all this on a recording.
Im posting here to see what other apple staff may suggest. Is this lady incorrect? Do you think its 'perfectly reasonable' for a £500 tablet to fail after 2 years.
Finally I would add the item was actually bought from Currys, Apple have actually been a lot more helpful than Currys. Currys simply dont want to know, pass the buck to Apple etc, even though the sales of goods act states my contract is with the seller. Ie Currys.
Apologies for the waffle, but this ipad was a present for my mum. She is very elderly and trying to deal with cancer. Skype and her emails have become a bit of lifeline to her.
    Many thanks

  • Apple hears the MacBook Pro whining sound

Apple Computer this week acknowledged that some of its 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks may emit an irritable whining sound and said affected customers should contact the company.
In a rather curt statement on its support site, the Mac maker wrote: "If your 15-inch MacBook Pro emits a high-pitched buzzing sound, please contact AppleCare for service." Apple offered no other details.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company has been scurrying to mend a handful of minor issues reported with its new MacBook product lines, the the first of its consumer and professional notebooks to use chips and underlying technology from Intel Corp.
Despite the minor hiccups, Apple last quarter generated $1.16B in notebook sales, shipping nearly 800,000 units. The company said the notebook unit total consisted of a primary mix of MacBook and MacBook Pro models, and too a lesser extent, PowerBook G4s that remained in inventory.
Of all the models, Apple's consumer oriented Intel MacBook has emerged as a top seller. Although the company said it shipped a "significant number" of MacBooks in June, it still exited its recent fiscal quarter without enough supply to meet demand.
Earlier this week, the Mac maker admitted there is a problem with some of its white MacBooks where the computer casing may exhibit signs of premature discoloration.

There are reports that Apple is updating keyboards with new icons, but I wouldn't expect Apple to offer you a free replacement of your existing keyboard.

  • New Retina Macbook Pro - strange whining Sound

    Hi,
i just received my new Macbook Pro Retina - brilliant machine. But suddenly it starts to whine - I can hear the whining while sitting in front of the notebook, so its pretty loud. The sound does appear when I move windows or enter mission control. The sound disappears when I plug in the power supply. I made a recording: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oysfex8imnggefe/RMBP_whine.m4a
None of my Macbook's I owned before made such noises. Is my notebook faulty?
    Thanks

So I had this problem on and off with my rMBP the whining sound was coming from the top left corner of my computer. I made a recording too showed it to the genius bar - I was allowed a replacement (though the genius bar guy didnt really say much on the matter) - just got my replacement unit in today (had to go through apple.com since mine was a special order/upgrade) and it also makes the same very annoying whining sound. The 2 units I have had so far have this problem on and off (I dont remember if it was when I had the power adaptor on or not). I did notice however that if I closed the lid and opened it back up or restarted the sytem the problem would go away.
Dont really know what to do now this was acting as my primary computer. Dont really see the point of ordering another replacement as it seems this is a common problem (most people probobly havent realized it yet). In addition my replacement unit has noticeable gaps between the bottom lid and the rest of the unibody - dont know if the screws werent tightened enough or what but this too is annoying. Havind had 2 SSD macs (both Airs) previously I was hoping the build and low noise level to follow suit with the retina mac.

  • Reasons for PC Crash?

Would it be possible to get a list of possible reasons for a PC crash?  It would be very useful for debugging a hard PC crash without any visible error codes and I think it would be useful to IF-RIO members who like me are trying to fix a crash error.
    Specifically my problems is:
My app works in simulation, however when I try to run it on the Hardware it crashes the PC.  It appears to be the host-app since I can run the FPGA individually by clicking the start arrow on the FPGA Front Panel, but I am having a hard time debugging it and as far as I know I'm doing the same thing as the examples (down-converter & FIFO).  I'm not really sure where to begin.
The purpose of the application is to capture raw data from the ADC and save it to a file.  The FPGA code is very simple it reads I&Q from ADC0 and then writes each to a separate FIFO.   The FIFO's are configured to be a large as possible 256, I16 elements each.  The host app has two threads (Producer Consumer Arch) one that reads the FIFO and puts the data in a Queue (the Producer) and one that reads the data out of the Queue and writes it to a file.  This was done to try and isolate the fast reading necessary to keep up with the FPGA/FIFO from the slow file writing.  Currently the Consumer/FileWriter runs the Producer/FIFOReader by reference, so that it can run on its own thread.
The project was started with the using the 'template approach' on page 20 of the 'Getting Started Guide' and it shares the ni5640R template.lvlib' with another project (via. a the *shared* directory provided in the attached zip file).  The folder titled *RawCap" is the main project directory with the project file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards, Stu E

    Kyle,
I was able to repeat the error by only running the 'producer vi' (titled *FIFOReader*), which opens the FPGA, configures the hardware, reads the FIFO and enqueue's the data.  This eliminates the 'vi server' and the 'consumer' loop which dequeues the data from being the issue.  BTW, all of this runs fine in simulation (except the HW configuration calls which crash in simulation and I don't call in simulation - they are in a case structure tied to a global boolean).
I also noticed an odd Project Dependency in my LV project, noted in the attachment.  It appears that LV updates the ni5640r template library files whenever something in the project changes (I haven't identified what the pattern is yet, but it doesn't look to be exclusive to the template library files changes or even the library callers, which puzzles me).  The troubling thing I noticed is that when it 'saves' it doesn't completely update all of the library files.  I can fix this by opening the ones that didn't get updated, with the correct project open and saving them, but if I close one project (after everything is fine) and open the 2nd project the issue is repeated).  I was also puzzled why my project was pointing to the driver installed template library (C:\Program Files\...) and my tailored one, fearing that I altered the original I reinstalled the 5640 driver and cleaned up the project files to point to the correct template library (remove & replace the '5640r template.lvlib' seems to do the trick for the template, then I have to manually reset the links to my subvis.  After all this I completely separated the ni5640r template libraries for both projects (out of fear mostly not knowing what LV was doing that required 60 files to be saved, so they are no longer shared) and the problem (pc crash - the same as before) is still repeated.
    Kind regards,
    Stuart

  • Reason for Mini-Display?

Why does Apple use mini-display ports and not straight HDMI? I mean PC users just hook up their PCs to any TV via HDMI and they're ready to go, while we need speakers in order to get sound.
Im an Apple loyal fan by the way, Its just that people ask and I don't know what to say!
Is there a functional benefit or something?
First I thought VGA ports are big and ugly, but HDMI is really thin and beautiful.

In addition, HDMI is basically for TVs and DisplayPort is designed for computers. Macs are computers. Apple assumes the primary use of the video port would be to extend screen space with another computer monitor, like I used to do before I bought a desktop. The reason the Mac mini gets HDMI is because it's used very widely as a media center connected to a TV. Apple probably noticed that a high percentage of mini buyers also buy the HDMI cable, compared to other Mac buyers.
There are definite technical reasons for a computer to have DisplayPort instead of HDMI. You can do a web search on the topic, here is an excerpt from one article I found:
HDMI is based on legacy CRT raster-scan architecture. DisplayPort is designed for modern flat-panel displays and PC chipsets. DisplayPort has a micro-packet architecture with low voltage signaling that more easily enables networked displays. In the future, DisplayPort will also allow daisy chaining displays at full graphics performance, including 3D. and content protection. Today's USB-based daisy-chaining solutions do not support high performance 3D graphics or protected content.
HDMI has rules for how to implement and use the technology. Business and enterprise customers may not want to implement all of the consumer electronics features that are required in HDMI products. In contrast, DisplayPort is the display equivalent of Ethernet....anyone can implement it in any type of application. A VESA compliance program ensures interoperability for products featuring the "DisplayPort Certified" logo.
DisplayPort supports higher performance as a standard feature-every 6-foot cable supports 10.8 Gbps. With HDMI, high performance is optional and comes at a significant cost premium. DisplayPort has better support for projectors and enables cool ultra-thin monitors. It supports native fiber optic cable and offers latching connectors, features that are missing from HDMI. Down the road, DisplayPort will allow multi-function monitors with a single cable delivering display, audio, and USB connectivity. It will also support multiple monitors on a single connector.
I also think I read that HDMI requires that the manufacturer implement certain DRM/copy protection tech as part of its consumer electronics purpose. That is why the excerpt above refers to "content protection."
For those in the design/photo fields there is this bit of obscurity, which is that DisplayPort can support more than 8 bits of color per channel in the video signal. I am not sure if HDMI can do that.

right now i have my card connected to an onkyo integra series receiver through the optical out and i plug in a headphone to the receiver. when i play a movie, background noises sound absolutely perfect. heck?i can hear a door squeek like it was right next to me and leaves russling in the wind. however, the voices seem to sound muted for some reason. i can barely understand anything. if i plug?the?headphone into the front panel?the problem goes away.
i'm assuming it's some sort of conversion from surround sound mode to stereo headphones issue. i've already set the sb control panel to headphones..

Do you have Dolby Digital Li've turned on while you're doing this? I'm guessing that might be a factor. It sounds to me a lot like you're only hearing the front left/right channels of a 5. signal, since my understanding is that the voices usually are mostly in the center channel.

  • Possible reasons for a repository manager not displayed under KM Content

    Hi,
I developed a repository manager and deployed the par file Archive uploader.
Most time after deployment, I can see immediately an instance of the repository manager under KM Content. However, sometimes, when I made some changes to the code, it doesn't appear under KM Content. The deployment log in SYS/global/config/cm/reports shows no error.
I tried to find some log in System Administration - Monitor, but found nothing.
    So, could anyone tell me:
    1. What might be the reason for the problem that the repository manager cannot display under KM Content after deploying the par?
    2. Where can I find the log explaining why my repository manager cannot display?
    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hi Ray,
Deploying a repository manager means a hot KM deployment, which isn't supported at all, see https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/bb1f18be-0801-0010-ffa0-e3495f7401bc and SAP note 894884. After such a deployment, the KM is restarted, but you have some kind of "shadow KM" in memory, which leads for most things to an unpredictable behaviour.
In contrast to the documents reffered to above, also the standard KM delivery from SAP still behaves in an uncontrolled way for many issues.
That's why after a KM hot deployment, you should restart your server if you realize anything "unusual". A workaround is to debug your code and using the hot code replacement feature (which only works in some situations, but that's better than nothing...).
    Hope it helps

  • Buzzing/whining sound coming from top left keyboard area...?

For a couple of months now (I think, I can't pinpoint when exactly this started), there has been an annoying buzzing/whining sound coming from the very top left part of my keyboard (I think). It happens when the computer is on and dies down once I turn it off but kind of does a very quiet "tick-tick" thing for a few minutes after shutdown. At first I thought it was the screen because it sounds like it's coming from the very bottom left corner of the screen (or the very top left corner of the keyboard, I can't tell)... but adjusting the brightness doesn't seem to affect it. It increases when I'm typing or moving the cursor and decreases when I'm not doing anything, but it's always present. I have checked my hard drive and everything's okay, so I'm not sure what it could be. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Performance hasn't been affected (as of yet), so it's just more of an annoyance.
Another thing - for a while now (probably over a year), the screen has been flickering intermittently. It will go darker to lighter to darker to lighter quickly whether the screen has been on only a few minutes or several hours. This seems to have decreased lately, but maybe the two issues are related...?
I got my MacBook soon after they came out with the first black one, whenever that was.
    Thanks for your help!

Why not answer my question if you want help? Does your "ordinary keyboard that has midi capabilities" have a transpose function or a split keyboard mode that you may have accidentally activated? Did you try the solution I offered you?

  • KeyboardFocusManager reason for memory leak?

    Hi all,
with a memory leak detector we found that our application has massive memory leaks after opening and closing a JDialog and the reason we found was the following:
The KeyboardFocusManager has a private static HashMap in which the actual focus in each window is stored. This is done by storing key/value-pairs in the HashMap with window as a key and the Component having the focus on this window as the value. Now you can throw the reference to the component away by using e.g. theComponent.setEnabled(false) - the KeyboardFocusManager then stores the pair window/null in the HashMap - but we didn't find any callable method to remove a key/value-pair from the HashMap and so the reference to the JDialog (as the key!!) stays resident and we have the reason for the memory leak. Now I have a few questions to this problem:
    1. Is it right in your opinion, that there is no method to delete the entry from this Hashtable?
    2. If this is the case - we have the opinion that there must be a good time to delete this entry (e.g. when disposing the dialog). Do you see if there is an obvious reason that this opinion is false?
    3. If no do you think this problem can be accepted as a bug by sun
Thanks in advance and greetings from
    Holger

I have been seeing similar behavior; I too have not found all the
leaks. I think I have slowed the allocation by replacing some of my
'build array' functions with the combination of 'initialize array'
followed by 'replace array subset'. The drawback to doing it this way
is that you have a fixed maximum number of elements allocated just once
rather than allowing an array to grow incrementally. Please let me know
if you try removing build arrays and if that helps.
By the way, there is a checkbox under the options menu to deallocate
memory as soon as possible - if you don't mind that your program runs
more slowly, this may help to avoid the problem, at least temporarily.

Seriously this argument is pointless. What is it that you are fighting for anyway?  @ViRUS2013
P.S. We're not actually fighting, it's just as expression.
The topic is subjective. I'm on neither side.
I'm not fighting for anything. I just find your reasons for why Nokia chooses to disable vibration while charging to be really far-fetched and inconclusive and would like the discussion to continue until we come up with an idea that sounds reasonable or we get an official response. I mean, isn't that what people does on forums anyway? Open debate and all...
So far I think it might be related to the battery, maybe it's dangerous for the battery to vibrate while it's charging and the particles inside are moving or it gets hot while charging, but that's just my uninformed opinion.

What Lumia do you have? Does it have a removable back cover?

  • Frustrated with HP lame reason for not repairing a keyboard issue

I recently called HP about a keyboard issue, where a the backspace key popped up and became detactched from the keyboard because the small latch broke under normal use. HP asked me to send the notebook back to them for replacement of the entire keyboard. When it got there, the case manager called back to tell me that they would not fix the keyboard because there was evidence of something being spilled on it. Although I don't recall any major spill on the keyboard I didn't deny that coffee drops may have reached the keyboard, nontheless that is not their concern and does not relate in anyway to the problem I resported to them. Yet HP refused to replace the keyboard and sent back as is. I must mention that the machine is functional and the spill has no effect on the operation of the machine. My frustration is with the broken key which affected my use of the keyboard.
In spite of my appeal to the case manager and customer support, they insisted that it's against their policy to fix the keyboard because of the spill evidence on the keyboard.
I am wondering if anyone else had a similar experience with HP service and particulary how they handled my service call. I am not accepting HP's lame reason for not fixing my keyboard and I was not happy I could nothing about it. I however use several HP products in my SOHO environment and this support incident left me with a bad experience.

After some troubleshooting, I decided to order a new battery.  I replaced the battery and was then able to get it to restore, however--after I restore it and it comes time to restart the phone, it gets stuck and doesn't turn on.
Sorry, your repair ruined the iPhone.

After you ruined the iPhone with DIY, Apple won't touch it anymore. You should have asked before all these had happened.
