White line in Display...

Hi all,
Ok, so i could have a PBG4 12" for cheap(300$) but the owner tells me there's a white line on the display that you can see through, about a centimeter wide. Any idea, anyone, if it's a sign of future troubles or if i decide to live with it, the laptop could still have a long life(in a manner of speaking) ahead of it? Thanks for any reply.

I hope you didn't do it. I have the same issue and it is growing quickly, there are about 100 of them now. There is a discussion about this as a known issue particularly if the laptop serial begins with 85W

i just want to know if anyone has encountered this problem and if it is worth getting fixed/looked at. its an older nano so im thinking about just buying an itouch. any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Problems like this can be caused by a cable pinched in the hinge. When you start seeing the display problems, does adjusting the angle of the display make a difference?
There is a known logic board fault in this model iBook which resulted in the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program. However, in my experience, if the logic board is involved with display anomalies, it causes the system to freeze up, necessitating a hard shutdown and waiting several hours for a restart. Another symptom of the logic board problem is if pressure on the case to the left of the trackpad on the left wrist rest improves the situation.
Based on my experience, it sounds more like a cable caught in the hinge, since you're not seeing system freezes. Let us know if adjusting the display's angle (a bit forward or a bit back) makes a difference.

  • PDF displays as grey with a horizontal white line

I have a 4MB PDF of a family tree generated by MacFamilyTree.  It is about 350 pages if printed. I can view it using Apple's Preview program and Firefox (24.0).  However, if I try to view it using Acrobat Reader (11.0.04) all I get is a grey screen with a white horizontal line.  I can use "Save as..." from Acrobat Reader and save a new PDF.  The new PDF can be viewed just fine in Preview and Firefox, but NOT in Acrobat Reader.
Relatives on Windows XP and 7 have the same problem of not being able to view the PDF, seeing just a white page.  Some can view it inside their web browsers; some cannot.  Some can view it using Acrobat Reader (no idea which versions); some cannot, seeing the grey page with a white line.
I sent the PDF file to MacFamilyTree for help, but they said that the problem is with Acrobat Reader and no the PDF itself.  Screen shots of the same file opened in Acrobat Reader (top) and Preview (zoomed in - bottom) are below.  Any suggestions on how to get a PDF to display in Acrobat Reader?

In the Print Dialogue, choose "Save as AdobePDF" instead of "Save as PDF". Save as PDF saves as a Preview PDF which is why it works in Preview and in Firefox's PDFJS viewer (which ISN'T Adobe based)

  • Preview displays pdfs with distorted colours and thin white line on the border

Preview Version 7.0 (826.4) on 10.9.5 displays pdfs with cmyk images in it in distorted colours and thin white line on the border of the page despite in the original .indd file the image runs into bleed. The display errors aren't present in acrobat reader 10.1.12 or acrobat pro 9.3.4. Any idea? Thanks

  • Displays diagonal, jagged, white lines on a gray background

The eMac (1.25GHz, 512 MB RAM) does the following. It boots (grey rotating spokes), then displays jagged, diagonal, white lines on a gray background. However, when I boot it into target disk mode, there's no problem w/ the display, and I could booted my Powerbook 12" G4 up using the eMac drive as the boot drive, so it doesn't seem to be a drive issue. Whaddya think, reinstall?
    It's running 10.4.11 OBTW.
    Cheers,
    Rex

Weird; I don't think I've seen anything matching that description yet. No display problems when booting into Firewire Target Disk mode suggests the CRT/analog assembly is mostly fine, but the expected corrupted video drivers would have been corrected with the OS reinstall. If the problem were with part of the ATI video display chipset, it would be a first to me that the native 640x480 resolution is OK but other settings are not. Still, it might be worth trying two things. One, check the PRAM battery; if you have a multimeter, it should read within 0.1v of 3.6v while under load (still in the battery holder). Battery location and replacement details are at eMac - Do-It-Yourself.
Two, try resetting NVRAM. Holding downcommand-option-p-r keys at startup until you hear three sets of chimes, then releasing the keys will reset PRAM settings (per What's stored in PRAM?). Resetting PRAM is supposed to do everything that clearing NVRAM does, but there's a long-standing body of ancedotal evidence that NVRAM is better thought of as a superset of PRAM (although this may not be nerly as true for OS X as it was in OS 9 and earlier). You can fo even firther and reset the Open Firmware settings as well. To reset the Open Firmware settings:
restart holding down the command-option-o-f keys; at the "Welcome to Open Firmware" message (black text on a white screen) type in the following at the command prompt and press return after each (case sensitive, no spaces):
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
The Mac should restart after reset-all (if it doesn't, type mac-boot and press Return)
    Good luck!

  • TS2771 My Ipod touch displays white lines across the screen.  I've turned it on and off but still shows up HELP!!!

My Ipod touch displays white lines across my entire screen.  I've turned it on and off and it still hasn't cleared up.HELP!?!

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem that points to a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Can't stop Thunderbolt display from flickering white lines after firmware update (Yosemite)

I am having serious issues after the Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2. Running Yosemite on MacBook Pro and I am now getting white lines that gradiate from the bottom to the top of my screen across multiple browsers, apps and even the finder window anytime I move my mouse. I cannot take a screenshot (it stops when I try) but I posted a video here:
    http://youtu.be/3zOKL1JFp5M
It is impossible to work this way and after 20 minutes of watching my screen constantly refresh anytime I move my mouse I am feeling nauseous.
Is there anyway to UNINSTALL this firmware update? I was not having this kind of problem before. Every once in awhile I was finding my Thunderbolt display would not wake up after sleep and I thought the firmware update would fix that, not cause more, crazier problems. It is causing this gradiating line problem on my Thunderbolt display AND my MacBook Pro screen, which is even more bizarre.

I updated and no issues with my 2012 Mini so may be computer related.  I believe once a firmware has been "burned" into the chip it cannot be redone.

  • Why is there a solid white line on left "border" of iphone 4 display screen?

A solid white line appeared on the left of the screen a few hours ago, from top to bottom of my iphone4 display.
It is almost as if the whole screen is off center by 1 mm. I have tried to restart hard-power off, even restored it. Help!
    Thank you in advance.

    Hey Alliemac71639,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with your iPhone 6 Plus display. The following resource outlines some great troubleshooting steps::
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

    Display image issues
This can include bright or dark pixels, lines in video, or sections of video missing.
    1. Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
    2. Verify the issue is not content related, by viewing different content.
    3. If the image is too dark, adjust the brightness. In General Settings choose Brightness and Wallpaper and slide the slider.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • How do I troubleshoot an ipad screen that goes black or displays crazy white lines?

My Ipad has recently gone dark. when I reset it using the power/home thing it sometimes displays white lines that appear to be crossing he screen really really fast.  I cant get my ipad working.....

IT looks like that is not a software issue but more on the hardware. are you covered by limited warranty or apple care? If you are you can bring it to the apple store for repair. Else you might be paying for an out of warranty repair. However, diagnosis is free so you can still go there for a free diagnostic test. It might be a display/ screen issue

  • Ipod displayed white lines, shut off, now doesn't work. What do I do?

I was using an app on my 32 gb Ipod touch that I just got in Janurary 2012. The ipod then displayed a bunch of white lines and shut off. I hooked the ipod to itunes and it did not recognize it. I then tried to hold in the power and home buttons in with it connected to the computer and without it connected to the computer. After being disapointed I went on the web to see if I could find the answer. The ipod then randomly turned on. My next plan was to restore the itouch, as some said that this was needed to fix it. I first wanted to save my data on some apps so i did not lose them. This was a seperate app than before, so I know it had nothing to do with the particular app. Well anyway, while doing this, the ipod did the same exact thing, but now I cannot get it to work again. If I can get it to work I plan on restoring it right away, but I am starting to think it is a hardware issue. Any ideas?

    - After being connected to a charging source for an hour, see if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow you to restore the iPOd. For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Next try DFU mode.

    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you likely have a hardware problem.

  • White line now appearing down middle of display screen today

My iMac of 2006 Tiger OS has had problems with thin, coloured vertical lines appearing on the screen since December '12.  At that time I got a lot of responses and an indication that the problem was the ATiRadeon X1600 GPU.  The thin vertical lines have increased a bit and I'm now up to 3 on the right and 1 on the left which haven't been any problem.  However, just now a white line appeared almost down the middle of the display screen?  It blanks out the places where it actually runs.  It's very thin but noticible.  I have taken a screen shot and viewed it in Preview.  None of the lines show there?  Any further ideas for a fix?  I have a Seagate HDD attached so all is being backed up.  Thanks!  Illa

Lot's of folks had those lines after 1 or 2 years. There was even an Extended Warranty Program for a time, but it lapsed 2 or 3 years ago.
Personally I'd say that we have both faired very well over the years, my Early 17" Core Duo didn't start getting lines until towards the end of it's 6th year.

  • White line in screen display

I got my 80GB ipod classic for Christmas. It has worked fine, but now it has a white line through the screen. It is annoying and makes watching videos a problem. Can anyone help? I don't want to send the ipod to Apple.

Well, you could try these steps: The Five Rs.
But it's more likely your iPod needs service.
    Service request.
Or you could take it into an Apple store and have them take a look at your iPod.
You can make an appointment by using this link.

  • Macbook display shows black and white lines when fullscreen

If i leave my Macbook on for a while without shutting down and then I view a photo or movie (in player or safari) fullscreen the screen shows just black and white lines. Sort of like bad tv reception. It has happened a few times and a reboot has fixed it but it comes back. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks

I have a similar problem. Not sure you're on here (since the post is really old) but did you manage to work it out? How?
    My thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19007548#19007548
My Imac froze earlier today as I was dragging an image from safari into indesig and when it froze the weirdest pattern overlaid the screen. It looked just like the opacity pattern from photoshop with grey and white squares. I turned the computer off using the power button and unplugged everything.
Now when I try to start it these weird lines appear on my start up screen (see link)...
    http://meijerladdaruppgrejer.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/oops/
as you can see the apple and the wheel appears as normal...
... then it moves to a normal looking white screen (perhaps a bit greener than usual) and around 30 seconds later freezes at the blue screen.
    I've tried the cmd + alt + p + r several times but it won't help.
If i press alt during start up I can see and choose my hard drive but just end up at the blue screen again.
Can I try starting it up in safe mode or something?

  • Display shows unknown "white line" via MBP retina

as title, when i turn off the "automatic GPU switching" for using the NVIDIA graphic power, and i try to switch the resolation from "best scale for retina" to "1920*1200" and quickly switch back and repeat for a few times, and the screen will shown a "white line" under the finder bar, then i turn back on the "automatic GPU switching" this "white line" will be gone. i belive its the GPU NVIDIA driver's error, please check forward for this problem, and also i will get support from the Apple store to find out the problem.

    This worked for me:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
