Who is Core DBA
- What are the tasks of a Core DBAThe definition changes based on the company hiring the DBA.
However, Oracle has a good set of job responsibility descriptions in Chapter 1 of the Oracle Administrator's Guide under the sections
Types of Oracle Database Users, and
Tasks of a Database Administrator
The document can be found in the 10g Release 2 document library at http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/homepage
- Avilability of Core DBA JobsChanges based on the location.
- Eligibility for the Core DBA JobsChanges based on the need of the potential employer. And your ability to convince an employer that you are capable of doing the job.
In some locations, convincing employers is easier if you get some Oracle Certification - see the certification link at http://education.oracle.com and the general certification information at http://www.prometric.com

  • What is Apps DBA and  Core DBA?

    Dear Friends,
I often come across the terms 'Apps DBA'. I have been trying to get it clarified from many, but I am not convinced. I want to know what is the role of Apps DBA?
What are the duties performed by Apps DBA? How is it different from core DBA?
I request you to explain on the above subject.
    Thanks and regards
    Bharath Kumar V

    Hi Bharath,
I want to know what is the role of Apps DBA?That's a common question! An Oracle Applications DBA is very different from a regular Oracle database administrator and requires specialized skills in business administration and Oracle application server architectures. The Oracle Applications DBA job role is less compartmentalized than a traditional Oracle DBA and the Oracle Applications DBA must also have skills in these areas:
    - Database Design - Many shops require customized functional extensions and reporting data marts and the Oracle Applications DBA must have outstanding Database design skills.
    - Oracle Application Server - The Oracle Applications DBA must understand the internals of the Oracle concurrent manager and understand how to monitor and tune Oracle Applications.
    - Functional Expertise - Many shops requires a business degree and a general understanding of the Oracle Applications module. For example, accountants are widely used to support Oracle eBusiness Suite (Oracle Financials), and accountants with an IT background are easily trained in Oracle Applications DBA support.
I have my full notes here, on theb Apps DBA job roles:

    Hope this helps. . .

    Hi Rajini;

I want to know what will be the work for Oracle Apps DBA.Firstly you are on wrong site for your question, i belive you should ask it on Forum Home » E-Business Suite » EBS General Discussion forum part. Check below links:
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/search.jspa?threadID=&q=core+dba+vs+apps+dba&objID=f475&dateRange=all&userID=&numResults=15&rankBy=10001

Mainly Oracle apps dba also manage job like core dba, but apps dba also give support to application side(EBS). Apps dba can apply db patch and also apply application path. Apps dba monitor db activity&performance and also do samethink to application etc etc..

    hello sir,
    my self chandrika..
If mirroring got failed. How do i know, and what alerts will get ? will please clarify my doubt.

If mirroring got failed. How do i know, and what alerts will get ? will please clarify my doubt.
    Hello Chandrika,
There can me many reasons for mirror to fail.It can be due to mirror server not available ,network failure between principal and mirror.Log file getting full on primary server due to lack of transaction log backup.
You can use mirroring monitor to see status, size of logs being sent .You have to manually configure alert for DB mirroirng
Other very good option is to use Witness for automatic failover

Which career is most rewarding one in terms of Salary, Job Security and Least amount of workThat's entirely up to you. No one but you knows what you consider important, what you find interesting, what you find satisfying.

    Regards,
AsifMy original comment aside, I find these comments from you rather, uh, "enlightening".
"Which career is most rewarding one in terms of . . . Least amount of work"
"which career will be . . . easy to learn"
Since "easy" and "least work" seem important to you, I'd suggest a career in something besides IT. I could make some specific suggestions but run the risk of insulting people who work in those areas.

  • Future of Oracle DBA

    Hello Experts
I am seeking for your guidance regarding to future of the Oracle DBA(Core).
    I have following questions:
    1. What areas in Oracle we need to strong(e.g RAC, dataguard,...etc.)
    2. How much OS level skills are required (e.g. basic, middle, experts...etc)
    3. What will be the effect of SUN and Oracle Deal on DBA's life
    4. What are the extra skills needed except Oracle Database
    5. Who is better APPS DBA or Core DBA
    Thanks & Regards

    >
    1. What areas in Oracle we need to strong(e.g RAC, dataguard,...etc.)Yes.
    2. How much OS level skills are required (e.g. basic, middle, experts...etc)Middle, but see my response to #4
    3. What will be the effect of SUN and Oracle Deal on DBA's life. I wouldn't expect much if any. Oracle RDBMS is still the company's flagship product. That won't change. It has certainly had no effect on this dba's life! My alarm clock still goes off too early. I still get home too late. I still don't spend enough time with my family or practicing my trumpet or paddling a canoe.
    4. What are the extra skills needed except Oracle DatabaseSome OS, some networking, some programming in the language de juor. In my opinion no education or knowledge is ever wasted. And as a DBA you are at the juncture of OS/network/programming/system design. And everyone else always believes every problem they have is the dba's responsibility because "it has to be the database!". Network people never believe they have mis-configured a switch or router, or that they have failing hardware. OS people never believe they did any damage be deleting log files (as in .. redo01a.log). Programmers never believe bad data could enter the system, so never code to trap it. They never believe that the way they code SQL could have a detrimental impact on performance or scalability. Designers never believe the database and rdbms is anything more than a data dump.
So it always falls to the DBA to do other people's troubleshooting for them.
    5. Who is better APPS DBA or Core DBA Define "better".
    Define "APPS DBA"
    Define "Core DBA"

Or This also includes administering other s/w such as Oracle Web Logic Server, Fusion Middle-ware, Internet Application Server,Fusion Applications etc???and integrating these s/w with EBS???Depends on the organization you work for as some people segregate the Apps/Database duties by having Core DBAs and Apps DBAs.
In my opinion, an Apps DBA should have the Core DBA skills and should be able to maintain the database and not just the application tier.

  • LOCKED DBA ACCOUNT

I am desperate and need help.
I wanted to logon to the Oracle databse using SQL.
It gave me an error 3 times and then locked the DBA or database owners account.
    How can I unlock it.
PLEASE any help at all will be highly appreciated
    Thank you
    Monica

    Hello Monica,
Incomplete information posted here by you.
Anyway, kindly read the following and may be youll be able to help yourself.
    1. There can be multiple accounts with DBA role. Yes 'DBA' is a role and nothing to do with database administrator of your database. You may assign DBA role to Scott or even HR. Your DBA is one such user who has got DBA role assigned.
    2. By default, Oracle installation creates 2 system users with very high privileges. Users sys/change_on_install has highest privilege followed by system/manager.
    3. An user (With DBA role assigned to him) can reset/change the password for any other user (including an user with DBA role). Scott with DBA role assigned to him can lock or unlock/change the password for sys or even system.
    4. Login to Oracle database need not necessarily require a password. 'Yes', if you logged in as a local OS account, then you may bypass the database authentication and instead force Oracle to use OS authentication. For doing this, perhaps you may need a telnet ot SSH login using which you can login to the database server (Windows, Linux or Sun Solaris etc etc) and then you may try to use sqlplus '/ as sysdba' or sqlplus '/ as sysoper'.
Hope this helps you to solve ur problem. Read the official documentation provided by Oracle. Self help is the best help.

    Abhijit

I want to know difference between Apps and Core DBA and then i want to practice DBAPlease avoid duplicating threads - you've already asked about core vs apps DBA in
    {thread:id=2357224}
Since I am a beginner completed Oracle 10g OCP DBA certification...
Any one can help how to practice DBA from the start..With no disrespect meant, if you've already completed OCP, I wonder how that is and if rework of exams and certification requirements may be needed. Maybe OCP level should have a practicum part to back up the theoretical part.
Don't you have a good grasp of the topics mentioned on following exam's page?
    http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=1001&lang=US&p_exam_id=1Z0_043#3
I have installed 11g DB and working with sql commands with several users..
Also I want to know about how to setup instance, work with instance separately for that what should be done..If you are "working with sql commands" already, what is meant by "setup instance"?
Probably what you are asking (or leaning towards with the question) is not easily answered in a single thread, but something you have to learn over at least 5-10 years of hard work and willingness to try and learn and re-learn.
