Why can't I close my tabs?

I now have 12 tabs open because I can't close any of them without closing the whole window! I have never had this problem before, but now when I click on the 'x' on the tab nothing happens. Same with when I right click on the tab and select 'close tab.'

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Why can I not close a tab which has a popup.

Some website have anoying prompts "Do you relay want to leave this page" and you have click yes or no which might excecute some code, or kill the whole browser. Incase one stumbles upon such site's say navigating from a search result, one should be able to close the tab, or have some way of overiding the prompt without having to click on any of its choices if one does not trust the website for security reasons.

Why can't I close App Tabs with STRG+W, like mentioned in "What are App Tabs?"

This way, I can't close the Browser with the shortcut.

You can have things the old way, and even if you don't choose to restore your tabs the next time Firefox starts you can still restore your through your history as John99 mentioned, should you change your mind after restarting Firefox.

Are you tapping the blue + sign in the upper right corner of the Safari toolbar? That is what you do to open a new tab.

Why can't I close tabs?

More often than not, when I close a tab, it won't close. After clicking the X to close a tab, it renders that tab inaccessible, but it remains visible. To fix, I have to restart Firefox. Then I am able to get to those tabs and close them. I've tried sending them to a new window, but a new window opens up blank and the tab I'm trying to close stayed in the main window. I've also tried pinning and unpinning it, but nothing works aside from restarting Firefox.

I can't control size of screen, I can't open or close separate windows. It may not be firefox, it may be Linux/Unity sidebar but please don't make me study your product to try and trouble-shoot it, I am not a web-developer, those tools are useless to me, I just need a version that works out-of-the-box for Linux 12.0.4. No my add-ons are not the problem. Where are all the features I cam to associate with firefox? They are gone.

I would like to be able to close one tab, and go back to my email or original page, but I only get the message that I will close all tabs. I would like to be able to close one tab, and go back to the previous tab that I have open, not have to go back and sign in to my email when it should still be open. The dialog Firefox displays when you click the "close window" (X) button doesn't have the option to only close the current tab. Instead, you can use one of these methods to close just the current tab:
* Click the "x" that should appear on the current tab itself
* Right-click the current tab > Close tab
* Press Ctrl+w to close the current tab
(Note: If you accidentally press Ctrl+w twice, you can re-open the tab by pressing Ctrl+Shift+t to Undo Close Tab)

Firefox developers, I've been a developer myself. Setting the default to not save tabs in Firefox 4 is going to make a lot of people VERY angry.
I'm a fairly educated user. After upgrading, the first thing I did was to check Preferences and try to make sure all settings were good to maintain what I've been accustomed to doing. I didn't take the Firefox 4 tour, but shut down the application to make sure caches were emptied. There was no warning about my multiple tabs, but it was too late to stop the process. When I opened it again, all my tabs were gone, some of which related to material or local logins that I will have a hard time re-creating.
If my wife had done this, you would have heard her swearing without benefit of phone or online chat window, no matter where your labs are. :-)
For everyone's sanity, please don't turn off the Preserve Tabs on Logout function without warning.

The file tab used to have an option to close one tab at a time. It is no longer available in file. If i close using the "X" it closes all of the tabs out.

Some menu entries in the main menu bar are hidden if you use the mouse and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu (Bug 626825). 
You can see the difference if you use Alt+F to open the File menu or other menus like the Edit menu (Alt+E) and Bookmarks menu (Alt+B) and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by tapping Alt or by pressing F10.

In the previous version of Firefox I could close the window and still have my tabs intact when I reopened it. Why does FF 4 closes all tabs and doesn't give me an option to save them? (And if it does, where do I change the setting?)

In the previous version of Firefox, before closing a window with tabs still open, it asked if I would like to "save and close", "close all tabs" or "cancel" the operation. FF4 will just alert me that I am closing those tabs and ask me is I want to continue, without giving the option to save my research for a later use.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically. 
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session. 
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page. 
Another possibility is to use:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

Why can I not open new tabs?

I can not open a new tab no matter what I do. The only time a new tab will open is if I click a link that takes me to a different site & then a new tab will open, but I can not open another one just by clicking on it or using the menu from it.

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:

Why can't I open new tabs in firefox 4?

I upgraded from firefox 3 to firefox 4 when it asked me to do so. The upgrade has not gone right - I have a mixture of the two versions, with the menu across the top as in 3 but the toolbar as in 4. There isn't a button to open a new tab (I can use ctl-t but would rather not). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but the same thing happens. It seems firefox does not really uninstall since on re-installing it remembers all my add-ons and settings.

You can find the New Tab button showing as a '+' on the Tab bar. 
You can open the Customize window and drag the New Tab button from the Tab bar on another toolbar and it will become a regular toolbar button like the New Tab button that you have in Firefox 3 versions. 
If you want the New Tab button at the far right end of the Tab bar then place a flexible to the left of it.

Since I downloaded your new 4 ---- I am unable to close one Tab while keeping another one open. The reason this occurs is that in the File window there is no Close Tab indicator. Therefor I close all of the Browser.

Simple. To close a tab, you may either:
* use the x icon at the end of the tab, or
* middle-click the tab.

Why can't I close these 2 documents?

I have other documents on my desktop that I can open and close. I can open new Textedit docs. But for some reason these two "untitled" and "untitled 2" will not go away. When I click on the red x or on "close" the red x fades for a few seconds then refreshes and the document is still open. I have deleted all the text from both documents, but cannot delete docs themselves. The yellow (minimize) button functions; just not the red one. I ran Disk Utility>repair permissions; advice from an older post, but that proved fruitless. Thanks for any advice.
