Why did I leave virgin media

BT Infinty worst choice I ever made, speeds dropping all the time, having to phone the inept Indian help desk, being told I need to reset my home hub to factory settings changing the wireless channel because the smart wireless option obviously doesnt work I am at my wits end with it I don't even bother calling the help desk anymore as they are nothing short of useless do bt realise they will lose customers over this just have to wait for my contract to finish never had this problem with my virgin media router why is this allegedly super duper home hub 3 have these problems

Kristian
Sorry to hear your upset with Infinity.... I suppose having moved from Virgin (I presume cable) with the high speed offerings and then not getting better or even the same service must be very dissappointing...
I moved from 1.5 Mbps to 37Mbps so as you can guess I am extremely happy.
Anyhow can we help?
Are you on a wireless or wired connection?
Could you run the FTTC test on http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
If you could post the results we can see what your profile is and take it from there.
As a last resort there is always THIS Thread to turn to that has helped.
Edit I see you do mention wireless so I have copied some info from THIS POST .-
The wireless scanner (for PC) is Innsider 2 and it's free.- http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
More info on innsider http://www.pcpro.co.uk/features/367684/fixing-wi-fi-problems
And some other info in the links on http://www.pcpro.co.uk/features/367672/whats-killing-your-wi-fi
Video (it's version 1 but very similar) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSk50pS-nVA
It'll help you identify a clear or least used wireless channel then you can go into your HH3 http://bthomehub.home/ advance settings, wireless and move channel from "Automatic" to a specific channel.
Wireless n is needed to get the best speed from infinity more info HERE.
As a last resort where people have decided to move away from the HH3 see thread below.-
http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/List-of-Routers-to-replace-Home-Hub-3/td-p/298203
Reduction to a download speed of 5Mbps , that's a large speed drop over wireless!!!!!
I'd have another go running the BT speedtest when connected via wireless with (if you have) laptop near to the HH3 and see what the drop is. Note you'll still have to tick the box saying your wired before it'll allow you to run the test.
I'm about 20 feet from my hub going thru one plasterboard wall and my laptop with a wireless "n" USB adapter gets around 35 to 37 Mbps

  • Why did apple leave out chapters from FCX?

I have been consistently surprised by Apple in that when I boutght the imac in November, I did not realize it no longer had idvd. I have purchased Final Cut Pro but have found out it does not allow you to make chapters for output to dvd. Why did they leave these things out? If I can understand why, perhaps I can adjust. I am so disappointed.

    a) DVD is SDef only - HDef is for more than 6-7 years the thing
    b) DVD is limited - delivering via 'Cloud services' allows display (in HDef) on phones, pads, computers, tellys, at home, mobile, anywhere, for you, for others, for all.
and if you like to hand-out a single copy of a movie, use a flash-mem usb-stick
no doubt, iDVD was a masterpiece of software, offering superb designs and tons of individualizing options (I made a website some hundred years ago … https://sites.google.com/site/idvdmodding/ ).
it would be charming, Apple would offer legacy iDVD as a 2.99$ at AppStore …

why does mountain lion not utilize all my 27" screen when using the web? the old lion had an extended screen setting which operated well
can this be in a future update? If not, looks like I've purchased a 27" computor that is usless for what I thought I was getting.
can this computor be taken back to Lion??

If you are referring to full screen, it's still there in Mountain Lion. Go to the View menu and choose Enter Full Screen.

  • From Virgin Media to BT Infinity?

Hello. Im thinking of leaving Virgin Media and switchover to BT Infinity.
Im wondering what are the total costs - I want BT Infinity broadband with unlimited usage.
I got 2 sockets in my house, not sure if it belongs to BT or not as it doesnt say anything on the sockets.
My postcode is N17 0QD if it helps.

    Hi Arkash
In THIS POST I gave my situation..... which I arranged by phoning BT. However check to see any offers (eg 3 months free etc) are still available thru a telephone order or are they just for online orders.
I POSTED HERE some info about the Unlimited usage and products.
Just to give you an idea.-
I recommend speaking direct to BT.
I was on the BT Broadband option 1 for £16 pm. This also gave me anytime UK landline calls.
However when Infinity became available the BT sales phone calls could only offer me the full £28 Infinity with anytime calls.
This also was only available if I tried to order online.
    I wrote HERE .-
On the 4th July BT phoned me.... Only offered me the Infinity package with Unlimited and Anytime calls.
This was also the only package available to me if I ordered thru the BT Infinity checker website.
On the 7th July I phoned sales and ordered the Infinity option 1 with 40GB cap and Weekend calls.
And added an uplift for Anytime UK landline calls.
So on BT broadband I had.-
1.5Mb broadband with 10Gb download cap per month. Anytime UK landline calls.
For £16 + £13.90 line rental. Total £29.90 per month.
    And with Infinity I have.-
37Mb broadband with 40Gb download cap per month. Anytime UK landline calls.
    For £18 + £4.75 + £13.90 Line rental. Total £36.65.
I'm actually paying £35.35p per month with the paperless billing discount.
Approximately an increase from £30 per month to £36 per month.
Therefore for roughly an extra £1.50 per week I get Infinitely faster broadband...lol with an additional 30GB download allowance.
I felt that was worth it, and am very pleased..... so far.
Like you I wasn't happy with the packages that looked available online for me to move to.
So I rang Bt and found very helpful people who gave me what I wanted.
If I find I want the unlimited download then I can change up (this comes with anytime calls).... so with 30 days notice I can cancell the £4.75 anytime calls uplift I am paying at the moment.

  • Did I make mistake leaving virgin? Losing internet...

Hi, I had this worry when I changed to BT and it has unfortunately it's turned out to be true despite people on forum saying unlikely. For morning and aftermoon I don't notice reliability issues. Videos steam fine but every evening I lose internet for 30sec to 5 min few times. Streaming videos stop works and rather frustratingly it makes it impossible to play any online games during this hour.
I haven't had this problem on virgin for past 5 years at all. They been completely solid in terms of reliability.
Did I make mistake leaving virgin?
What's the best way to try to have this problem solved? Should I call BT?
I know how frustrating and very possibly unhelpful support on phone can be. What do you guys recommend?
PS/Edit: On positive side I near just down the road from cabinet and get 69-74mb speed and when it works I can stream HD no problem unlike virgin where they cap ur 30mb after few hours so HD can't be streamed any more for rest of the day.

Do you lose connection while connected using an Ethernet connection?
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

  • How do i link my time capsule through a virgin media router(netgear))

Hi i am trying to use. My new time capsule as the main wireless router . I have a virgin media netgear router VMDG280. rebooting the router time capsule and computer still results in a flashing amber light
    Thanks
    Steve

I have had the same problem but SOLVED IT this evening.
If you type in your IP address 192.168.0.1 into your google search line it launches you into your virgin media .  Put in your username (in my case the default was 'admin' as I hadn't changed it and my password for my virgin media account (not the router password).  this took me into the settings page to change my Superhub into a modem only.  NB  - you can change this back at a later date.
i then re-booted my virginmedia box and then did a soft reset on the Time Machine and BINGO.
I went into the aiport utility on my imac and it asked to create my own home network name and password.  Everything works fine and connects to my new home network name in the wifi settings.  The time capsule was able to see my network and is now backs up.

  • Why does itunes and other media continue to play when i close the lid on my macbook pro 2011???

Hey, I am new to mac and still getting used to it (making the transition from windows), its amazing! Anyhow, I cannot figure out why my itunes and other media like youtube or a film on vlc player continues to play once the lid has been closed. I thought that when i close the lid the macbook should then sleep. It does everytime when there is nothing playing. The little white light on the bottom right hand corner of the book is on but music continues to play.
The sleep option always works. If I press the power button and choose the option sleep it does so etcc.
Is this normal and am I just being stupid or is there a problem??
I bought the laptop from ebay, its a macbook pro late 2011 17inch. I dont have apple support and might have to make a trip into London to the mac store however I was hoping someone can help me...
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Thanks if you can it is muc appreciated....!!

hey, thanks for the reply. I don't know to be perfectly honest. When I close the lid without any music playing it sleeps fine. How could I check?
So basically I pressed the power button and pressed sleep. The laptop turned off and the little white light turned on no problem. I did the same thing with closing the lid and it went to sleep no problem. (Can you confirm that when the little white light is on it means the laptop is sleeping)??.
I then had itunes playing and pressed the power button and when i pressed sleep the music paused then 6 seconds later it went to sleep. I then had itunes playing and closed the lid and the music kept on playing even though the white light was on.

  • Why did Word on Office 2013 REMOVE Auto Correct from Right-Click Context Menu??

    Hi Microsoft -
I normally don't rant, but this is a killer feature removal, and the reason given is for aesthetics - 'Removal of clutter" is how it's worded here:
    [Changes in Office 2013]
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178954(en-us).aspx
I copy n pasted below the operative row from the linked TechNet page as to the reason WHY this critical (and very popular feature) has been removed from Microsoft Office 2013 Word's context-menu: LESS CLUTTER
And your answer is ambiguous and doesn't solve the issue that you created to make things prettier: "Click the AutoCorrect Options button" Then what?  ADD EACH WORD MANUALLY?
Please advise ALL OF US that want this feature back how to have our commonly misspelled words fixed and added automatically to the dictionary.  If I am missing this in a major way somehow, I apologize completely and will issue a public apology via any
social media platform of your choice.  If it really is gone, and I have to manually add the entries into a buried table 6-clicks deep, then I will issue a public excoriation of this feature on as many social platforms of my choice.
    Sincerely,
    Maximus Mednick

Auto-Correct and certain formatting tools are no longer available from the spelling error context menu.
To make Word 2013 cleaner and less cluttered, we removed AutoCorrect and certain formatting tools from the spelling error context menu. The features are still available in Word 2013 through other entry points within the Word user interface.
Less clutter in the spelling error context menu. This enables users to find popular commands more quickly. In addition, the spelling error context menu now fits better on the screen.
To change AutoCorrect options, do the following:
Choose File -> Options -> Proofing
    Choose the AutoCorrect Options button.

Microsoft used to be about allowing users to customize the OS and apps however they want. This was one reason I have always preferred Windows over Mac. There are 5 ways to do any one thing, and you can customize it to do it however you want. It's all about
user choice. Please don't go the way of Apple and force users into the way that you *think* we should do things.
    <rant>
While I whole heartedly agree with this suggestion, if you look through this blog about the design decisions that went into the 2007 ribbon:
Jensen Harris: An Office User Interface Blog -
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jensenh/archive/2008/03/12/table-of-contents.aspx
You'll see that one of the considerations of the ribbon was to ELIMINATE/REDUCE customization because it was costing large corporate customers too much time/money to support their users with 2003 customized menu/toolbars.  In other words, the ribbon
was intentionally built as a fixed design so that average user cannot change it.  The QAT was an afterthought, a sop, to allow users minimal customization.
They found that the 2007 lock down was too much of a "good thing", too much like the good old "IBM 360 green screen" (even if most people don't recognize the reference), so in 2010 they
re-introduced limited Ribbon customization within the UI.
But you still can't customize the default tabs. And to add injury to insult, if you do want to customize a default tab and go to the effort of trying to recreate the default tabs and groups
within the Ribbon UI, you'll eventually find that YOU CAN'T'! There is no way inside the UI to force the buttons to layout the same way! AHHH!
    Even in 2007,
EXPERTS have had the option of creating custom Ribbons/tabs by editing XML, but that is pretty serious programming, out of scope for 99% of users.
The "solution" to the problem was too simple. Just add an option to allow users to turn on the old menu UI.  Even if it had been buried as a registry hack, the people who really wanted it would have learned about it. Then MS could have collected statistics
on usage that would have "proved" that the menu was preferred over the ribbon.  The thing is, if the ribbon was defaulted "out of the box", over time people would eventually all switch over to it. Simply because it was the default, because MS only produced
new training material referring for the ribbon
Now, I'll concede that the ribbon really may be more "intuitive", but only for new users. For long time users the change is very jarring.
They made the same choice with Windows 8.  In the last Windows 8 consumer Preview there was a registry hack to bypass the Start Screen.  I learned about it in July or August. But MS was so sure the Start screen/metro was the only way to go they
rushed out a Windows Update to eliminate that registry entry. And it was eliminated from the RTM version.
    WHY?
Why did they remove the user's right to chose the UI that worked best for them? I don't know.
</end rant>  sorry, this is a hot button for me.

  • Verizon, this is why I am leaving.

    Verizon,
I am writing because I can't seem to get an idea across to any customer service agent I speak with, but before we go down that road, let me tell you why I have to go to another carrier.  I bought my first phone with Verizon nearly 2 years ago, it was the first Razr smartphone.  I got it after being talked out of the HTC Rezound by a CSR.  That RAZR ran out of batteries within a few hours, daily.  So, one of your call centers took pity on me and upgraded me to the HD and extended my contract.  I thought, wow, what a great business.  I have a problem, and they take care of it.  I was happy.  I went through a few RAZR's, none of them really working for me.  So, I decided I would buy a HTC DNA online (EBAY) and sell my RAZR to pay for that.  I got my HTC in, activated it, and then went to the store and asked the CSR in the store if everything had transferred over, insurance, warranty, etc... She said that it sure had and to be sure to get an otterbox for the screen on my DNA.  So, with that information I sold my RAZR thinking that I was covered.  Granted, I should have read more closely the contract, but have you seen your contract?  I just assumed your employee knew what they were talking about.
Fast forward a year and few phones later.  I am in the Verizon store on the iPhone 5s launch day (that was totally my mistake, wow, what a line!).  My Nokia 928 had bricked itself and my wife wanted the new 5s, so I thought I would go in and handle 2 birds with one stone.  After waiting 2 hours (again, my bad, I should have accounted for the launch day, but 2 hours in your store doesn't help with patience) I finally spoke with a very polite and knowledgeable CSR.  He was able to deliver the bad news in a surprisingly professional manner.  The bad news being that my insurance did not apply to my Nokia, or my HTC.  That Verizon couldn't do anything for me, my Nokia was bricked and that was my problem not Verizon's.  Also, that my phone upgrade had extended an extra 4 months.  OUCH!  I explained to him what his peers had told me a year before about insurance and warranty information transferring over, he politely said he was sorry, but that they were misinformed and that there was nothing he could do.  Fair enough.  I saw the logic, but I was still upset because I made decisions based on Verizon's word a year before.  So, I asked him about the 4 month phone upgrade extension, that hadn't I signed a contract?  He told me no, that it wasn't in the contract.  But Verizon gave me  a date, and then they changed it with out me knowing.  Didn't we have a verbal contract with me?  You know, like doing what you said you were going to do?  Nope.  They don't.  So then I started thinking, why has Verizon been charging me insurance for so long if it wasn't applicable?  I asked him if I could get a refund, he told me that I had to call customer support to get the refund and that yes, I should get it.  So, I figured I would just get my wife's iPhone and go home and call customer support.  Here starts problem #2.
We live in New Mexico.  It is a big state full of nothing and a lot of middle of nowhere's.  He got the phone and started messing with it knowing it was my wife's.  I wasn't paying attention, I was still reeling about waiting 2 hours for nothing, but keeping calm because it wasn't this poor guy's fault.  So, after a few minutes I asked him, are you activating this line?  He indicated that yes he had and that NO phone left the store unactivated.  Wow, I wish had known that I said, because my wife is in the middle of nowhere and that the only reason we pay out or nose to Verizon is so that she is covered on her trips to the godforsaken reaches of New Mexico.  He said, sorry, it was done and there nothing he could do to undo it.  That not to worry, my wife will just get redirected to customer support.  Thanks Verizon.  Thank god it wasn't a surprise.
So I called the cancellation center, not because I wanted to cancel, but because I couldn't handle doing another 1hr wait with Verizon.  The associate I spoke with was very understanding of the concern I had for my wife.  She switched the phones back and sent her a text telling her how to activate her 4S.  I was very appreciative.  I then asked her about the refund of the insurance money.  She told me that I was paying for the privilege of being able to activate that insurance on my RAZR at any time.  I told her that hadn't had my RAZR for a year, since Verizon had told me that everything had transferred.  So I was paying for something that I could have never used.  The reason I made that decision was based on what Verizon had told me.  She said she could refund 2 months worth of money, but not any more.  I said, we are not talking about a lot of money here.  Money that Verizon should have never taken.  She again apologized and said she couldn't do anything, even though she acknowledged the insurance was useless to me.  I said this is crazy, I pay you guys for 4 lines a month.  You guys took money that wasn't yours and you are balking over 40 bucks?  I said on general principle that makes me want to cancel my service with you guys.  Silence.  So 40 bucks, that isn't yours in the first place, is more important to Verizon than my 4 lines?  Silence.  I explained that I can't cancel my account now, but I am really thinking it is best that we part ways.  She explained that she understood and that my accounted was noted.  Wow.  Maybe I am off base here, but she didn't try to save me.  She could have waved my wife's 30 upgrade fee (what a ripoff that is) which would have been the same thing.  Nothing. Just good bye.
So this morning, I called to activate my wife's new phone.  Great experience.  I told the CSR that she was great, but I had some issues the day before with the Verizon process and could she transfer me to someone who I could explain the problem too.  After a lengthy back and forth, she explained to me that the only process was one where I could only complain about employees.  I told her that employees were not the problem.  The system was the problem.  She told me there was no system for that and that there was a feedback option on Verizonwireless.com, which I couldn't find, so here I am writing this diatribe, because I had to vent I couldn't find anywhere else to do it.
Lastly, here is why I am leaving.  Verizon, you are greedy.  I watched countless people sign up for EDGE.  What a rip off.  They are already paying for a subsidized phone and you charge them 30 bucks more for a subsidizing the phone?  Crazy.  On top of that, I saw people selling iPhones 4S's back to you for 100 dollars.  They are going for up to $350 on craigslist and ebay.  I know you need to make a profit, but wow.  You are taking advantage's of people's ignorance.  Shamelessly.  Your network is the best. It is why I joined in the first place.  But at this point in my life I think I can handle a few dropped calls than get caught up in this non-sense.  Verizon, if you read this far, thanks.

    Wow what a long post.
Your phone insurance was paid for a year but you never inquired after the verizon person told you it transferred over. You should have contacted the carrier Asurion and not verizon wireless.
The phone activation is totally understandable, however I have purchased my devices at full price and there is no $30 upgrade fees. I also put it in the bag and swap the meid/esn from My Verizon. So they must have changed something over the last two years regarding activations. Time waits for no man seems to hold true here.
You can always purchase another device from http://www.swappa.com or a few honest sites. Don't  do any eBay oir Craigslist since you may get scammed.
In fouyr months your contract is up, you can get a new device at subsidy yet again, but research the devices prior to purchase.
    Good Luck

  • Why Did My iMac Hard Drive FAIL?

I am majorly upset right now.
My iMac 2009, 21.5"  (4GB Ram, 500GB Hard drive) computer that was practically unused since it was in storage for 2 years in my basement while I went out of town on business- suddenly had a Hard Drive Failure for no reason! Since the Warranty was expired on Apple Care, I took it in a Mac store - only to be told by the repair man that the hard drive needed a replacement. He did quick testing, and these were the results:
    Ran MRI and everything passed
    Reset pram and SMC
    Ran storage diagnostics
    Proposed Resolution: Replace hard drive
Total cost: A WHOPPING $229.00 plus tax for the hard drive plus labor costs. When I asked if I could just upgrade to a 1TB Hard drive since I was shelling out money anyways, Apple flat-out REFUSED- saying they couldn't put a warranty on a new hard drive, just the replaced one. Sounds like complete BS to me!
Further more, I would like to know how the **** this happened! A few times when the iMac was on the table and running, I lifted it up and clunked it back down a bit rough to readjust it- but it continued to work for a few more days. I doubt that would ruin a hard drive. I own a Macbook 13" that I clunk around all the time, the hard drive has never failed. Suddenly my hardly-used iMac that worked out the box when I first started using it again suddenly has a random hard drive malfunction a week in??? And now I'm out $250.00. I just feel jipped. I thought Apple products are meant to last. Apparently not. The guy said "Well it's a four year-old computer". Yeah but I only used it one year and then it was in storage! So whose to say THIS hard drive won't fail as well?
    Why did this happen?

Hard Drive Warning (all makes and models)
Ironically but logical, new hard drives are far more fragile than one that has been working for several months or a couple years. So beware in your thinking that a new hard drive translates into “extremely reliable”!
Hard drives suffer from high rates of what has been termed "infant mortality". Essentially this means new drives have their highest likelihood of failing in the first few months of usage. This is because of very minor manufacturing defects or HD platter balancing, or head and armature geometry being less than perfect; and this is not immediately obvious and can quickly manifest itself once the drive is put to work.
Hard drives that survive the first few months of use without failing are likely to remain healthy for a number of years.
Generally HD are highly prone to death or corruption for a few months, then work fine for a few years, then spike in mortality starting at 3-4 years and certainly should be considered end-of-life at 5-7+ years even if still working well. Drives written to once and stored away have the highest risk of data corruption due to not being read/written to on a regular basis. Rotate older working HD into low-risk use.
The implication of this is that you should not trust a new hard drive completely (really never completely!) until it has been working perfectly for several months.
Given the second law of thermodynamics, any and all current mfg. HD will, under perfect storage conditions tend themselves to depolarization and a point will be reached, even if the HD mechanism is perfect, that the ferromagnetic read/write surface of the platter inside the HD will entropy to the point of no viable return for data extraction. HD life varies, but barring mechanical failure, 3-8 years typically.
Data redundancy (copies) makes all HD crashes inconsequential, an irrelevancy.
There are only two kinds of hard drives, those that have failed, and those that will fail, regardless of quality of manufacture.
Any Macbook or desktop should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
Never backup your data exclusively upon magnetic hard drives or flash storage, nor consider same since magnetic storage degrades over time, roughly 3-8 years, even under ideal storage conditions.

I have been having trouble getting my email on my iPad2.
It started when I brought it to the US on vacation (I live in London and my email provider is Virgin Media). It worked once since I returned, but that is it.
I can send emails, but can't get them.
    Any ideas, people?

    Hi Kharels
Just posted this reply to 2 others with same sort of question:
I have the same issue as i have my own email address and only want to use.
There are two ways around this annoying problem. The first is to set up your own domain email account alongside your iCloud one, and when you go to send each email tap on From and you get a choice of emails addresses to reply from... ie your own domain or the iCloud one.  This is tedious though.
The other is to set up your iCloud email as normal, then create a new one altogether. Choose 'Other' when creating this new account. Then put for the incoming server mail.me.com, along with your user name and password. For the outgoing server put the server you want to use - ie your own domain one. This is therefore a hybrid account and does work.
Now switch off the email for iCloud (leaving on Calendar, Address Book etc). Switch on the email for your hybrid account (which of course is iCloud incoming as well).
Providing you have directed your own domain email address to your me.com one, you will find the iPhone should behave itself and you can use the folders etc and these will synch with your Mac ok.
Hope this work for you - let us know.
    Simon

  • When i now go on virgin media movie clips they will no longer play

i have virgin media home page selected for my home page when i select to look at latest movie clips it go to page but clip does not play.if i do the same useing internet explorer it plays so it must be something to do with firefox browser it did used to play but has not worked for last couple of weeks.

Some problem here. I bought my iPad 2 in June, and it has never been able to play a TV show purchased from iTunes. Shows I bought many months ago and synced to my Touch worked fine but can't be resynced to the very same Touch today.
Both the desktop iTunes and the iPad iTunes are registered in my one and only Apple ID, so copy-protection should not be the problem. Of course they are and always have been updated to the very latest OS/version.
Don't get your hopes up that Apple has a solution. They give us the runaround about updating the software and the same darn link to a help page about supported video formats ("Uh, I told you the video is from your own store!").  I have tried reauthorizing in both places. I have tried thoroughly un- and re-installing iTunes+Quicktime. No TV show is worth this hassle. It has soured me on the whole Apple iTunes ecosystem.

  • HT204365 Why did all my PDF files disappear from ibooks on my iPad

All of my PDF files disappeared from iBooks on my iPad. Where and why did they suddenly disappear? How can I retrieve them?

As far as I can work out, from incomplete downloads, ticks denote all downloaded ok.
The manually manage option is for those who want to tailor their library collections in Music and Video to specific items.  If you have this ticked, then it will sync with the sync selections in your devices pages (eg, Music, videos).
If you want to sync all of your collection 'all' the time, leave manually manage off and put the a tick in the devices' page to sync all items  Dependent on iCloud use, and or automatic download options in iTunes, new purchased items are added and synced automatically as they are added - this only applies to Store purchased items.
If you are going to added content outside of the Store, then Manually Manage is the option to take for Music and Videos - it does not affect anything else. IE Apps or podcasts, etc.
If you have manually manage off, and 'selected playlist' option ticked, then it will sync existing ticked items, but new items downloaded will require you tick them (a) after the next iTunes automatic download when it connects to the store and  downloads any items, or (b) you download to a device and then sync the device, in which case it transfers the new download to your library - but, as happened to you, deletes it from your idevice.
Retcicking and resyncing will add the item back on next sync.
Don't forget that whenever making any kind of manual change to hit Apply and resync, to stop changes being lost.
However, and i cannot stress this enough, iTunes is very problematic, especially when handling large collections.  Its sync operations can be erratic or non-functional at times (even buggy perhaps)
If all options fail, then go to your program installation control folder (Control panel\Programs etc on windows) and select to repair iTunes.
And if you have not already got it
http://help.apple.com/ipad/5/interface/  the ipad manual (not the used guide - this is more about how it operates)
    may prove usefiul to you.
    Best wishes, Ct
