Why do I get high latency (300 ms) on a fast Mac, Firewire preamp, 16-sample buffer?

Hardware: decent studio mic into Link.Firewire 4x6 (2518) preamp into early-2011 MacBook Pro (core i5), 8GB RAM.
Software: Audition CS5.5, no other apps running, Core Audio driver selected (which is the only option). Only one mono track armed for recording and monitoring, with no f/x turned on, routed directly to master output.
Symptoms: Regardless of the latency settings I select (16 samples up to 1024 samples), and regardless of the sample rate (44.1kHz to 96kHz), I still hear about a 1/3 sec delay when monitoring the input signal. Also same problem whether I route the audio output through the internal Macbook audio or back to the Link.Firewire monitor/headphone line.
Relevant history: I was able to do live multitrack recordings (overdubbing) with zero audible latency with the same Link.Firewire preamp on a wimpy old Pentium 4 3Ghz in Windows XP with Audition 1.5.
Why does this hugely faster Macbook Pro with Audition 5.5 have such awful perceived latency?
Thanks for any advice. I am already familiar with the latency-related literature such as the http://forums.adobe.com/message/3732874#3732874 and the Link.Firewire owner's manual. At this point I'm wondering if Audition 5.5 is the problem.

alan-ng.net wrote:
That sounds like a useful insight - but what do you mean by "So if in multitrack, the monitor option is set to Audition Mix, then you are likely to experience latency. If this is the case, then switch this to External ..."?
I don't see any menu options like this either in Preferences > Multitrack or in the Multitrack main menu.
Sorry, I keep forgetting that this is CS5.5, and that this aspect of it isn't the same as previous versions, so you can't control it like that...
It sounds like you might be talking about one of the configurations I already described above as tested and not any better: when Audition's Master  output is routed back to the LINK.firewire preamp's monitor output channel (as opposed to routing it to the Macbook's internal audio hardware).
The problem is that any monitoring output from Audition's Master output will suffer from through-path latency - as already mentioned. The monitoring control is now on the mixer - directly above the fader. You will find a button marked 'I', and this switches on and off the input monitoring on a per-channel basis. The important thing to note is that when you record-enable a track, the default setting of the input monitoring is OFF - and that's the way you should keep it! If you switch it on, then this is when you'll get all the latency I described, because the input will then be fed to Audition's Master output - and that's what you don't want.
So what you have to do then is to enable direct monitoring in your sound device, and this is where I think you will run into problems. I looked at the manual for your Link device, and I can't find any mention of an app to let you control any internal monitoring you'd need. Without this, you're stuffed unless you use an external mixer for monitoring, and just use the Link as a plain in/out interface - which is what, on the face of it, it seems to be. You'd probably be way better off with something like a MOTU 8pre, because this comes with a nice little software app that lets you control all of the internal monitoring paths very easily.

  • Why would I get a Sudden Motion Sensor error on a Mac Pro (not a laptop)??

    Get this error all the time since upgrading to Logic 9.1.4.  Thing is, I have a Mac Pro, not a laptop.
    Apple sends me to this page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934
    Should I disable sudden motion sensor?  Seems silly.  I am recording woth headphones, there's no movement from the computer.   And again, didn't have this error for 3 years and suddenly I get it after upgrading to 9.1.4?

    9.1.4 seems a bit shaky...
    That said, you might try disabling "Sleep" for the drive.
    As I recall, it's a generic error meaning the computer either isn't getting a response from the drive or that it can't pull data off fast enough.

  • Why does my 10GB iSCSI setup seem see such high latency and how can I fix it?

    I have a iscsi server setup with the following configuration
    Dell R510
    Perc H700 Raid controller
    Windows Server 2012 R2
    Intel Ethernet X520 10Gb
    12 near line SAS drives
    I have tried both Starwind and the built in Server 2012 iscsi software but see similar results.  I am currently running the latest version of starwinds free
    iscsi server.
    I have connected it to a HP 8212 10Gb port which is also connected via 10Gb to our vmware servers.  I have a dedicated vlan just for iscsi and have enabled
    jumbo frames on the vlan.
    I frequently see very high latency on my iscsi storage.  So much so that it can timeout or hang vmware.  I am not sure why.  I can run IOmeter and
    get some pretty decent results.
    I am trying to determine why I see such high latency 100'ms.  It doesn't seem to always happen, but several times throughout the day, vmware is complaining
    about the latency of the datastore.  I have a 10Gb iscsi connection between the servers.  I wouldn't expect the disks to be able to max that out.  The highest I could see when running IO meter was around 5Gb.  I also don't see much load
    at all on the iscsi server when I see the high latency.  It seems network related, but I am not sure what settings I could check.  The 10Gb connect should be plenty as I said and it is no where near maxing that out.
    Any thoughts about any configuration changes I could make to my vmware enviroment, network card settings or any ideas on where I can troubleshoot this.  I
    am not able to find what is causing it.  I reference this document and for changes to my iscsi settings

    If both StarWind and MSFT target show the same numbers I can guess it's network configuration issue. Anything higher then 30 ms is a nightmare :( Did you properly tune your network stacks? What numbers (x-put and latency) you get for raw TCP numbers (NTtcp
    and Iperf are handy to show)?
    StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • How RequestDespatcher.include() method gets higher priority  ?

    Hi,
    I have three jsp pages named as A.jsp ,B.jsp and C.jsp respectively. In A.jsp , i include B.jsp using include directive and i include C.jsp using RequestDispatcher.include().
    But in output of A.jsp , The output of C.jsp comes as first and then output of B.jsp comes as second , eventhough i included B.jsp before C.jsp.
    I don't know why RequestDispatcher.include() gets higher priority than include directive of JSP.
    Just clear me.
    thanks in advance,
    nvseenu

    It has to do with when each cache is flushed.
    Each of these JSP pages will build up its output text into a buffer. When that buffer is full, or you flush it manually, the text gets written to the underlying output stream.
    The jsp:include uses the same buffer as its parent page. The output writer of the current page gets passed to it so that it can just append to the end.
    When you short-circuit things by using the RequestDispatcher manually, you only pass along the request/response. The page invoked then obtains the output stream, and wraps its own buffer around it.
    When a page is complete, it flushes its buffer to the output stream.
    So the order is:
    Page B completes and flushes its buffer. That result gets sent to A's buffer.
    Page C completes and flushes its buffer. That result gets sent straight to the underlying response output stream.
    Then page A finishes, flushes its buffer. All of its buffer (including what it got from B) now gets written to the outputstream.
    Solutions:
    You can manually flush the writer before you invoke the RequestDispatcher: ie out.flush(). If you try to forward/redirect after this though, it will raise an error.
    If you really want to get complicated, create a ResponseWrapper, and when you invoke the RequestDispatcher, pass it a response object with an outputstream/writer that gets added to the current buffer (ie what it does with a jsp:include)
    Or you can just use jsp:include.
    here is some code to play with.
    Try changing the flush attribute on the jsp:include to "true" and see what happens.
    Uncomment the out.flush() command to get it to print in the "correct" order.
    // includeOrder.jsp
    <html>
    <body>
    Ok, this is the main page of this little test.
    At this point we are going to <jsp:include> the second page:<br>
    <jsp:include page="includeOrder2.jsp" flush="false"/>
    <hr>
    And now we use requestDispatcher.include() to include the third page<br>
    <%-- out.flush();  --%>
    <% request.getRequestDispatcher("includeOrder3.jsp").include(request, response); %>
    <hr>
    And now we are done.
    </body>
    </html>
    // includeOrder2.jsp
    Here we are on page 2!
    // includeOrder3.jsp
    Beware of page 3!Cheers,

  • High Latency in WoW during day/evening

    I recently had a problem with my internet being really slow, but it has been resolved by BT. Turns out they accidently capped me and so my speeds reduced.
    Ever since that problem, i am now getting high latency when palying WoW, but only during the times i want to play. Nothing else is affected, i can still browse, stream, download etc. But on WoW i get high latency. This seems to be all day until very late in the evening / early morning when it goes down.

    Hi Dottz
    Do you notice any issues when playing any other games?
    This still could be an underlying connection issue with your connection that is causing this, I can have it looked into for you just drop me an email using the contact us address in my profile. You can copy this address from the section 'about me'.

  • Periods of high latency

    Hello.
    Since last Saturday we have been experiencing periods of high latency. This has happened Saturday afternoon/evening, Sunday afternoon/evening and now today early evening. Weekend periods seem to end roughly around 9pm.
    I get high latency and while this is not noticeable while surfing, it can affect gaming rather badly and games become unplayable.
    Here is a paste of a traceroute I did:
    http://privatepaste.com/d2b9959b20.
    This looks like there is a problem after the conection has exited our house.
    I used the live chat to talk to an egineer on Tuesday and he was fairly helpful and tried verious things with our router (Home Hub 4). The guy I spoke to this evening was less than helpful and insisted everything was ok and that pings weren't his problem.
    I've just ran winmtr and here is more latency to look at: I would be grateful for any advice.

  • High latency issue When connected through Wifi

    Hi
    I have configured wlc 2504 with cisco 3600 ap .when i connected my laptop wlan on n range,i tried to ping with my network devices am getting high latency 130ms,150ms
    Can anybody provide solution for this
    by
    Veeramani.G

    Hi Veeramani,
    There are actually a lot of different factors that can go into high latency type problems on your wireless deployment such as co-channel interference, interference from other wireless devices, and overall utilization on the AP/Channel.  With that said, there are a number of questions that need to be answered:
    1. Is this issue isolated to either the 802.11b/g 2.4Ghz, the 802.11a 5Ghz, or both bands?
    2.  While associated to the Access Point, in the Controller Web interface, navigate to Monitor > Access Points > 802.11a/n or 802.11b/g/n(pick the band your client is associated on) > Find the Access Point and scroll to the far right.  Hover over the small blue box and select 'Detail'.  Find the section labeled 'Load Statistics' and let me know what you see as the Channel Utilization percentage as well as the 'Attached Client Count'
    3. Since you have a 3600, I am assuming you have CleanAir enabled on them.  Navigate to Monitor > Cisco CleanAir, and see if you can pinpoint any noticeable interfering devices with high % Duty Cycle

  • ISE 1.2.1 Complaining about High latency - can´t figure out why.

    Hello!
    my 2 node (16 core, 32 GB Ram, SAN) ISE installation on VMWARE is, complaining about High latency. I have about 250 Test clients connected, and the VMWARE guys can´t seem to find anything wrong. Is there anyway to get a more detailed test WHAT actually is causing this high latency? CPU´s are idling, ram is at 2% and disk I/O is almost not messurable.. but the software is still complaining. (the Dashboard shows latency at 100+ ms) I think this might be the external CA, againt which the client certificates are run. but I don´t know if I can test this theorie!
    I have 2 Hardware Appliances coming, but I thought my Test enviroment should be more then enough to handel 250 clients.. I am abit concerned about the going live with 5000 clients in the future.. if it is already complaining with 250 active clients.
    and yes, I will be splitting the tasks up between the 2 Physical Boxes (Profiling and such) and the 2 VM Boxes (Management) but at the moment, for 250 clients the 2 VM´s should be enough.

    I have a couple of my customers complaining about this as well. I believe it is cosmetic and it is due to this bug CSCup97285
    The suggested action for this alarm in ISE is:
    Check if the system has sufficient resources, Check the actual amount of work on the system for example, no of authentications, profiler activity etc.., Add additional server to distribute the load
    I have confirmed with both clients that the appropriate resources were allocated and reserved in VM. In addition, neither client is reporting any issues so this leads me to believe that it is just a cosmetic bug.

  • Why did I get 72 dpi solutions in AI CS5 instead of 300 dpi in Photoshop CS5!

    Dear all!
    I have done my file in Photoshop with 300 dpi. I have finished it and then saved it as EPS because I would like to open it in my AI CS5.
    So I go to File>Open the EPS File in AI CS5. I get it with 72 dpi file in AI CS5 when I check the resolution in Effect>Documents Raster Effects Settings. Why did I get 72 dpi file in AI CS5 instead of the original file which is really 300 dpi in Photoshop?
    Will it change the quality if I change from 72 dpi to 300 dpi as I wish to in the Documents Raster Effects Settings?
    Please help to explain in details if possible.
    Thanks a lot and best wishes.
    I am looking forward to hearing from you.
    My best regards,
    LUCK

    Luck,
    To see the use the raster image in its right size along with other objects, scale it (down) to match. To go from 72 to 300 PPI you need a factor of 0.24 (proportionally), you may use multiplication by 0.24 in the Transform panel or Object>Transform>Scale with 24% .
    It means I must change resolutions in Document Raster Effects Settings if I have effects raster effects created within Illustrator. Is it right?
    If (and only) if you wish to have the effects at the same resolution as (one of) the raster image(s). This will depend of the actual effect, but for many effects, yes (you will have to choose one resolution if the document contains more than one).
    Illy always sees raster images at 72 PPI, unless she is told otherwise.

    Is Internet Sharing On in th G5s System Preferences > Sharing pane ?
    In the Base Station is Port Mapping Protocol Enabled if it is doing routing ?
    It is in the NAT tab of the Internet Pane.
    Is the G5 also doing WiFi to the Base Station ?

  • Message says "screen resolution problem" and says to set higher than 1020 x 600. My screen resolution is set higher. Why am I getting this message all the time I use firefox?

    when I go on to Firefox I keep getting the message that there is a screen resolution problem and it says I should set it higher a than 1020 X 600. But my screen resolution is set higher. It is set at 1360 x 768. Why am I getting this message continuously?

    I've had the problem too... for at least a month or more. It would happen when logging into yahoo mail. But it happens only with firefox... not explorer. I contacted yahoo and he had me first disable add ons... no change... and since it didn't happen with explorer, they said to contact firefox. So I followed the advice of cor-el's post (on this page) and made the text on my page smaller... It did fix the issue.... but, I liked the size of the text the way I had it. So, how do I get it back to that size, and not have that annoying message any longer? thanks!!

  • Safari loading pages slowly / high latency

    I have recently been asked by one of my clients to look at a problem with their 3 macs at their place of business. They are an iMac, a macbook and a macbook air. They have all started to exhibit the same problem of being slow to load web pages using safari as their web browser of choice.
    Using the broadband speed test at speedtest.net shows that they are getting some extremely high latency (~4000ms) to some sites.
    I have tested the broadband connection thoroughly using my own (linux) laptop and everything seems to be in working order. Tests on the macs themselves using a terminal show that latency to the internet and dns response times are all as they should be.
    From some limited searching the problem appears to be similar to the problem described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8799710&#8799710 where safari itself is causing some problems for some reason.
    What I'm looking for is some suggestions on how i can go about fixing the problem when i next visit the client

    Welcome to the forums!
    The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
    (First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
    Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
    Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    (An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
    Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
    This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
    Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
    If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
    Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
    Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
    Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
    Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
