Why do I need a J2SE update?

I am currently in the process of cleaning up my hard drive and I found these in my Add or Remove Programs list:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 118MB
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 119MB
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 145MB
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 146MB
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 136MB
Java (TM) 6 Update 5 136MB
Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 159MB
Which one (or ones) do I really need to keep?. How does it help me to keep receiving updates if according to the Control Panel I rarely use them? Is this something for developers only? If not, how does an ordinary user of MS Office (thinking of switching to OpenOffice), internet and email get benefited from having these MegaBytes allocated in my hard drive?

Uninstall all but the last one (unless you know that you want other than the lastest one, which this is.)
If you install a new version, you can uninstall a prior version, or not, as you choose.
At some time in the future (year or so) you will be able to choose "update-in-place" if desired.

Guess: Because of the libraries they're linking to? I may be imagining things but it seems the nvidia driver is less loosely tied to it and will work with any recentish version of X. I'm pretty sure I've upgraded X before without upgrading the nvidia driver and everything continued to work fine. If I'm not imagining things, why don't they do what nvidia is doing?

nVidia has to update their drivers to support recent X.Org just like AMD does. nVidia however includes support for the newest X.Org to their drivers as soon as it is reasonable to do so, whereas Catalysts are always lagging behind the upstream. When an updated X.Org hits Arch's extra, chances are that you already have a compatible nVidia driver, with AMD it's not until after several weeks or months after new X.Org release when they update the drivers.

Why do you need to auto-update almost everyday?

After installed iPhoto upgrader tool, photos software is still asking for IPhoto needs to be update, why?

I have recently updated my os x 10.10.2 to 10.10.3 and found iPhoto software dose'nt work. there is some other application appears called photos like iPhone,when i am trying to open it, asking to marge iPhoto library. so tried to marge but it is asking to upgrade iPhoto through a iPhoto Library Upgrader tool. i have installed that but problem is still there - needs to upgrade your iPhoto library. why?

You need to upgrade the application not the Library. 10.10.3 requires v9.6.1
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Why do i need to use a credit card to do updates

I don't want to set up iTunes with a credit card, however, when I try to update something like iPhoto it requires me to have a credit card. If it is a free update then why do I need to put in a credit card number?

Why would the SPD workflow .xsn file are all needing to be updated for some reason?

I have had more then a few workflows all of sudden need to be recompiled and published, and what I'm noticing is that I'm being told with an error message that the .xsn file needs to be updated.

So the fields that are changed may not be on your list. This could be a lookup to a different list or something like that.
The SharePoint logs will contains the details of which field is the problem. You might want to use ULS Viewer:

How large is your HD and how much space do you have left?
Check out the following & do the necessary:
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
Try SU again.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

Why I lost all the apps needed to be update in the app store icon while I have not updated them yet? Please help.

I am using iPhone 4, and I had about 50 apps needed to be updated, which is stated in the App Store icon. I have not had time to update them until today. However, when I was ready to update all the apps, I found out that there was not any apps in the App Store icon needed to be update. Does anyone knows why? Please help. Thank you very much!

This morning I had the same issue - even though I have pending updates, the app store badge is gone and it says all apps are up to date. I, like many others I'm sure, selectively update apps based on reviews. I'm sure there is either an app store refresh/update on Apple's end or a run on the app store causing errors or issues.

Why do I need J2SE if I can do everything with J2RE?

I'm writing Java (with eclipse) for some time now, but I still don't understand why do I need to download J2SE ?
It seems that I can write code & run it with J2RE only... so what is the benefit of J2SE?

Eclipse has a compiler in it, presumably. Or possibly it delegates to javac and you just haven't found it.
You don't need to have an external command-line compiler if you only want to compile code with Eclipse, although it certainly can be helpful to have a duplicate tool with a different interface sometimes.
Also the JDK (that is, the Java SDK, as opposed to the libraries; sometimes the terms are used interchangably) comes with other useful tools, like javap and jar.

New iTunes & need for Safari Update, why do I need Safari!?

I absolutely HATE Safari, why do we need to install the latest version to be able to get into iTunes, or have it at all? This is why I do not trust updates "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
Seriously thinking of going elsewhere for my music needs and I have been loyal to the iTunes store since day one.

I keep trying to download itunes onto my computer as I need it to update my ipad and use cloud etc. I phoned apple support and they could not work out why it will not download on my computer. I am going into the apple shop to get help but just wondered if anyone else has this problem, the only thing I can think of is that my internet connection/broadband is very slow. Anybody any ideas?

What web browser are you using? Maybe the browser stopped the download of iTunes.
Try downloading iTunes again with another browser -> http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

I am having the exact same problem with trying to sync my iPad with my computer. To make a long story short, I had to reinstall Windows for my computer and therefore had to reinstall itunes.
I have done back ups in the past for my ipod touch and other ipods with no problems, but unfortunately I have never been able to back up my iPad. During a sync, the iPad would always disconnect from my computer and it would never finish. it would say the connection was lost, but nothing is wrong with the connection.
So now I have over 100 apps and thousands of pictures that I am afraid will be deleted if I run the sync in itunes. I have tried to transfer purchases and it goes through the list of apps, but nothing is ever transferred.
Any help would be appreciated. I am not interested in jailbreaking my iPad to solve this problem. There should be a fix for this and I want to upgrade to ios 4.3 as the original poster. Please help
