Why do my reply e-mails sometimes say 'attaching' and do not send

I exchange e-mails with some friends who often send attachments like photo's or include web links in the text. Sometimes when I reply I get the message 'attaching' this goes on for ages and ages and I eventually cancel and try again. Sometimes this sends and sometimes it still says 'attaching'. What is causing this?
I noticed in the 'view' menu an item is ticked called 'display attachments inline' is this my problem? I am frightened of changing anything in case I mess it up.
As you can probably tell I am not very computer literate.

In that case your email provider's server is having difficulties to deliver the message to the recipients email provider server.
This has got nothing to do with Thunderbird.
There is little you can do though. You may have the recipient to check with his email provider if they have any issues.
