Why does a dv PAL widescreen project export at 4.3?

Hello everyone,
I have for some months been puzzled by an export problem with DV PAL widescreen. I can import my footage ok, and in iMovie it plays back perfectly at the correct aspect ratio.
However, when I want a full quality export, the resulting movie is 4.3 - why?
I can get round this by going into custom settings and entering my own size, but why is this necessary?
A related problem has just occurred when trying to score a similar movie in Garageband. Despite being widescreen at source, the movie that goes into GB is 4.3. Am I missing something obvious here?
Many thanks.

composites of Photo to Movie and iMovie footage, exported to a Quicktime movie, which is then typically dropped back to a much larger iMovie project, so timecoding isn't really important at this stage.
Photo to Movie material is progressive and don't have timecode so nothing is lost there.

  • Why does iPhoto 9.5.1 not export slideshows?

Why does iPhoto 9.5.1 stall when I try to export a slideshow, using OS 10.9.3? All steps have been completed, and the preview works fine, but the system hangs up at the "Exporting Slideshow" progress window. The bar never fills. Nada!

Does this only happen for one particular slideshow? Test by creating another, short slideshow using different photos. Can you export this test slideshow? If yes, then probably one of your photos cannot be processed. Duplicate your slideshow and try to find the problematic photo by removing photos from the slideshow and trying again.
If you cannot export any slide at all, create a new iPhoto library for testing. Use iPhoto's "File" menu to create a new library: File > Switch to library > Other/New. Import a few photos and try to export a Slideshow.  If exporting from a new library works, try to repair or rebuild your regular iPhoto library.
You rebuild the library by launching either  iPhoto while holding down the key combination⌥⌘  (option-command)  and double-clicking  the iPhoto icon. Keep holding down the keys, until you are seeing the Library First Aid panel.  Select to "Repair"  the database.
If that does not suffice, try "Rebuild".
Back up your library before rebuilding.

  • Why does our Final Cut Pro Batch Exports incorrectly name sequence files?

Why does our Final Cut Pro 7.0.1 Batch Exports incorrectly name sequence files?
For example I can Batch Export 10 sequences one of which is called:
    "899-006TL013 It's Not Your Fault 800-509-2875"
Then the output for some of the files are along the lines of:
    "899-006TL013 It's No#61386E.mov"
I have seen this happen with 1-6 files or not at all... is it just dumb luck?
What is going on here and is there any way to avoid or remedy this issue?
We first thought having the render destination window open caused it but that was not the source.
    Any ideas?

I've run into the same problem with FCP 7.0.2 when exporting from the sequence using File --> Export --> QuickTime Movie. I exported a file today called "BSP - 01 - How You Can Be Sure You Are A Christian" and it came out as this "BSP - 01 - How You Can#1630". This is getting to be annoying. I also need to name these files the length they are. I'm hoping someone may see this and have a suggestion (besides shortening the file name). It seems like I've also seen this on shorter file names, but at the moment I can't prove it.

  • Why does Compressor take so long to export a 10 minute video clip from Final Cut Pro?

I've been trying export a 10 minute clip from Final Cut Pro. so it can be used with DVD Studio Pro and burned. However, the rendering process has taken 12 hours! The clip I'm exporting has minimal effects, no music, and is in 1080i 30fps. Does anyone know what's going on or what I can do to speed up the process?

First: How are you exporting? Are you using the Share feature or  Send to Compressor?
Second: You haven't said anything about your system configuration or really very much about your movie. What is its format… is it really 30fps or 29.97? Whatever it is, are the project settings identical to the clip properties, or were they changed?

  • Why does my video become longer after exporting from Flash?

I am a relative novice in Flash and working in CS5. When I test my file, it plays perfectly with the audio I embedded in my timeline. I tried a couple different compressions when exporting into a Quicktime file, but my video which is only 32 seconds long at 30 fps becomes 52 seconds long! The animation slows considerably, and yet the audio I embeded plays perfectly. Any advice as to how I can get it to match the "test movie" option so I can get this bad boy on YouTube?
    PLEASE and THANK YOU!

Without knowing the overall innards of the timeline it's hard to suggest a strategy other than those already mentioned. A clean test worked fine so the audio doesn't seem to be the issue.
Can you explain what is "buggy" about the output from the converters? Again, those should only be used if there's code involved to facilitate the animation. They essentially run the SWF and attempt to capture each frame as an image while stitching them together into a video. It's a fairly simple thing to do so it's hard to go wrong unless the hardware on the computer isn't keeping up with the SWF frame rate.
Flash CS6 is not compaible (to my knowledge) with 10.8 so that works to your advantage. Perhaps you can try downloading a trial of Flash CS6 and see if your export issue goes away. It won't solve why CS5 is giving you issues but it does put the power in your hands to export it for now. If it still fails to export that's a pretty convincing argument that a gremlin on the timeline is monkeying around.

  • Why does it take so long to export iMovie to Quicktime?

I just finished editing a 37 minute movie.  The movie includes:  video montage of the 1980s, music, and shot a clip using my Canon HDSLR.  But when I tried to export it, it says 72 hours time…

p.s.  I was able to export it to iDVD.  Then I tried importing from the DVD that I just made to YOUTUBE, but it only uploaded about 5 minutes of it. I've done so many research and followed all the specific settings, but nothing seems to work.  I figured, since some of the video clips are not HD and the video I shot was HD that it maybe a compatibility problem.  So I tried exporting not as an HD, but now it says 24 hours and it says 24 hours for the last three hours already.  If it worked on iDVD, how come it is not working on Quicktime Export?  I have been doing this for the last 5 days.  Help.

  • Why does my HD fill up on export of 3min clip? (MBA 13 2011 FCP X 10.0.4)

I'm on a macbook air 2011 13inch runing 10.7.3  with 37gb of free space and I'm trying to export a 3 mintue clip I put together in Final Cut Pro X (version 10.0.4).  When I go to share the clip (720p 1080 x 720 24p video) to an h.264 quicktime video, my hard drive fills up completely before the export is finished causing me to force quit FCP X and reboot to re-claim my missing hard drive space.  I've run space gremlin after one of these HD filling cycles and can't identify where the space is going...this is the first time I've experienced this with FCP X, other projects have exported just fine.  Going to try copying the project to an external USB drive, but that not doesn't really resolve this insanely baffling situation.

Did you ever take your computer in to the Apple Store?  I'm experiencing the same thing--70GB free on my Air's hard drive, but while trying to export a 4-minute clip out of FCP X, I, too, watch my hard drive space dwindle down to MBs, and of course my system then freezes up.
I've been having to transfer projects and events to an older iMac to get them into delivery format.
This has happened now with 3 separate FCP X projects.  Curious to hear what they said if you took yours in.

  • Why does iMovie 11 reload my project after every edit

I have had this problem from the beginning. I am working on a slide show style project (a la Ken Burns) now but this happened on smaller projects before. Typically I make a duration change to the slide and hit done. iMovie reloads the project. Sometimes it takes 1-2 seconds. Other times it acts like it is loading the project for the first time (at least 10 seconds). It's about 50/50 for doing both. Is it supposed to reload every time. I looked in Preferences (and other menus) and can't find anything to adjust. This slows my editting process to a crawl. HELP.

I think you have the wrong forum, this is for mobile devices, hence iOS Apps; I am trying to get it moved.
But as a quick answer, your final video may render out to more then 2 Gb, and your drives may not be able to handle that size files.
Check that the drive you are saving to is formatted as MacOS, and not Fat.
Even if the origonal videos are 731 mb, you may have chosen to re-compress at a higher rate.
Another idea would be to choose a lower compression, thus a smaller file.

  • Why does iDVD rescale my widescreen 16:9 back to 4:3?

Can't get iDVD (7.1.2)  to accept 16:9 aspect ratio. Reverts to 4:3. Workflow: export file as a Quick Time movie (with chapters) to desktop at 740x480. Following a tip from Tom Wolsky, I rescale file in Quick Time Pro movie properties to 854x480, a 16:9 aspect. But when I bring it into iDVD it rescales back to 4:3, in spite of the fact that I've set 16:9 in iDVD preferences. How can I get it to maintain the widescreen aspect?

  • Why does Adobe Media Encoder fail to export Quicktime Files?

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014 on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit PC.
While exporting the Quicktime variant of H.264 for ATSC television broadcast files, Adobe Media Encoder fails.  Non-Quicktime H.264's render correctly, but some television stations require quicktime.
Troubleshooting reveals the problem only occurs when attempting to make a 1920x1080 H.264 QuickTime file.
Using the same original file (1920x1080), Adobe Media Encoder WILL export a 720x480/486 H.264 MOV file.
More interesting still, it will ALSO export at 1280x720.
Testing this information to it's limits, I found that the cutoff for a successful render is between a frame size of 1610x906 and 1609x905.
Useless, random sizes, I know... but that's the breaking point for Adobe Media Encoder CS6 (6.0.3.1 to be precise) and H.264 Quicktime files.

I'm trying to make a file with the extension ".MOV" using AME's "HD 1080i 29.97, H.264, AAC 48kHz" preset.  AME fails every time with the following message:
    "Encoding Failed
    Export Error
    Error compiling movie.
    Unknown error."
Any other file extension (MP4, M4V, etc.) renders fine.  The issue seems only to happen when attempting to make an MOV file.  It doesn't seem to matter whether I use AME's built-in preset, or customize my own render settings--the problem always happens with any MOV larger than the size I mentioned above.
All of this used to work just fine on the same machine 2 years back with Adobe CS5, previous version of windows and QuicTime.  I've been all through the Adobe and Windows possibilities, so I'm grabbing at straws here with QuickTime maybe having something to do with it.
    Interesting.
Would you happen to know if Adobe has made any changes to its manner of muxing long-address MPEG-4 AVC data to the MOV file container? Since the MP4 and M4V files encode properly, have you tried opening these files in a media player and simply using the "Save As..." option to move the date to an MOV file container without transcoding audio or video data? I.e., is there any obvious relationship between the size of the MOV file encode (less than/greater than 4 GB) as a function of the resolution "break point" previously discovered?

  • Why does Quicktime take so long to export?

Here's my perdicament: I'm wanting to remove some scenes using Quicktime 10 from a movie I ripped from DVD. Once I do this and go to export it, however, I am met with insanely long export times. I've searched all around and can't seem to find out how to get Quicktime to export a large file in a reasonable amount of time. Am I missing some sort of codec or plugin, or is Quicktime just not made to handle exporting large files?
    Technical info:
    OS X 10.9
    Quicktime 10.3
Video files are .mp4 and .m4v. I've tried ones converted from Handbrake and DVD Remaster.
    Thanks for your help!

You are using the wrong tool. Using QT X v10.3 invokes an export routine which, by definition, re-encodes the file. Since the H.264 codec is both highly efficient and context adaptive, it is not the fastest encoder on the block. If the source files you wish to edit/trim are alredy in M4V or MP4 file containers, then you should be using either the QT 7 Pro app or the free MPEG Streamclip app here. QT 7 Pro will allow you to edit the files and copy the edited content to a new MOV file container. MPEG Streamclip will allow you to copy the edited data to either an MP4 or MOV file container. If an M4V source file contains an AC3 secondary audio track and/or a chapter track, then the edited file should be copied to the MOV file container to retain the all of the data tracks. Since an MP4 file is limited to MPEG-4 or H.264 video with AAC audio, and MP4 source file will loose nothing but copying an M4V file with AC3 and/or chapter track will filter these tracks from the target MP4 container. Neither of these options actually exports the data so the time it takes to create the new file is the lenth of time it takes to copy the data to the new file container.

  • Why does logic randomly delete my project files?

Logic will periodically delete the project files from the project folder and i can't get it to stop. It often costs me hours of work. For example, i'll close logic (and save) and come back the next day to find the "xxxx.logic" file missing. No alias, no error message, just gone as if simply deleted. My backups are still there, but those are usually hours behind where i was. Any help????

Never heard of that one before.
Can you figure out at what stage the file get deleted. When you save your project and quit Logic, is it still in the FInder? If so then your problem is not Logic.
Until you find the cause, when you save the final Project, just do one optical change (extend a Region by one bar) and save the project, then quit Logic. If your project file gets deleted again then you can pull out the last saved backup file from the folder. It is identacal except that minor edit you did.

  • Why does iDVD suddenly quit when I export an iMovie or when I double click iDVD icon??

I have been trying to open iDVD. It comes up for about a second and then dissapears.. This also happens when I am trying to export an iMovie to iDVD. I have a Mac OSX.6.8

Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 -try to  launch IDVD again.
