Why does computer turn itself back on after i put it to sleep?

This computer ( HP Pavilion Slimline model# s5107c, Product # NP212AA-ABA, Software Build 93NAv6PrA3 )  runs on VISTA Home Premium-64.  It had a virus which required the technician to save my files and wipe everything out and then reinstall VISTA and my files.  Since then when I put the computer in sleep mode, it turns itself back on after a few minutes.
I can find the settings for having the computer put itself to sleep after so many minutes, but can't find any setting for the computer turning itself back on.
Help please.  The computer tech has not been able to help me thus far.

Since downloading Maverick, my iMac switches itself back on after I have put it to sleep.
It does not do it every time but has done it several times. Any ideas on how to stop this?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq wake | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

  • Why does computer turn off when battery 40%?

Why does computer turn off when battery around 40%? I have tried replacing the battery.

Replacing as in "removed, re-installed", or "bought a new one"?
This is my display from "Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Power"
    "Normal" means no issues.
I will stop now in case you have actually put in a *new* battery ...

  • IOS 5.1 / iPhone 4s - 3G toggle doesn't stick / turns itself back on after reboot.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this bug on the 4s with iOS 5.1 ?
    I have:
    Cellula Data > OFF
    Enable 3G > OFF
After a device reboot I notice the battery is draining fast and I check in cellular data settings and sure enough 3G has turned itself back on.
I have reported this using Apple Feedback but wanted to see if anyone else has uncovered this bug / can reproduce it. I can reproduce it after each and every reboot.

I can confirm this behaviour is initiated by the network operator and not the phone. If your phone goes off and then comes on it negotiates with the network and the network then chooses to put your phone into 3G mode.
For now it's just a matter of remembering each time you have rebooted or reset your device to immediately go and switch 3G off. It would be nice though if Apple could make the user choice stick but it seems this part is actually out of their control due to the way the networks behave.
Some days when I leave the house I enable cellular data and of course turn 3G off, then I spend the whole day driving around and it stays on Edge the whole day. Other days it doesn't stay on Edge and I notice halfway through the day that 3G has turned itself on again so this is definitely being turned back on by the network operator.
Just another note: If your 3G is turned off but you see your battery is draining fast for no reason, turn 3G On, wait a few seconds and then turn it Off again. I don't know why but somehow even though it shows off it sometimes seems to not actually be properly off.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 Turns itself back on after powering off

This is a relatively new behavior, the system is running 10.6.8 and now when I select shut down, it does so, but then a couple of seconds later it turns itself back on. I have tried resetting the EFI and reinstalling the OS. I think Maybe it's a stuck "power on after loss of power" setting. Any ideas how I can fix that one?

If you have external drives connected, disconnect to test.
Open System Prerferences > Energy Saver then click:  Restore Defaults

  • Why does it turn itself off!!!!

I have had my blackberry for about three weeks.  It sucks.  I have to charge it nearly everyday.  It seems the battery runs down just after some texting and some phone calls.  But the most annoying thing is, it turns itself off!  It is incredibly frustrating, I don't know what its doing.  Can anyone help?

ANY smartphone, including the BB will run down its battery with bad software running on it.  In fact, in extreme cases the battery and other circuits can overheat, the phone then shuts down to save its circuits and reboots.
Longevity of the battery is based on the phone "resting" while waiting for IO.  Literally between key strokes, the processor is powering down to conserve the battery.
Any software that doesn't enter this wait state can drain the battery in minutes.  Examples are programs with lots of constantly changing graphics, badly written programs that loop internally instead of using a timer, web pages with poorly defined java script.   So ... be conservative about the software you use.   Anything with a lot of extra animation is going to be a battery hog.   Any program that too frequently checks back with an external server also will use up a lot of battery.   Using a setting that allows for too frequent checks, bad idea.
If you have a CDMA service such as Verizon then you should also update the PRL regularly.  For Verizon this is done by calling *228 and entering option 2.  I've noticed that some Verizon stores provide the phone without actually doing this and this will very likely lead to the exact problems people are describing.    Following this process once a month or any time you make a change to another region of the country is a very good idea.
Another thing is that if you ran down your battery without first charging it up all the way (such as when you first got it) you have probably damaged the battery.  This too is true for all Lithium Ion batteries.  I might add that periodically draining the battery on purpose is a good idea for other types of batteries BUT NOT for LiOn ones such as most cell phones use.  Doing this will also shorten the batteries life.
I do these things and I have not had any reboot or battery drain problems at all.   My phone goes all day with many emails and a couple of phone calls and is not even down 1/2 of its battery.  I might add that I've had a number of other smart phone type cell phones and folks have the same complaints about them for the same reasons.

  • Why does bluetooth turn itself off?

A new game that was purchased for my iPad mini requires bluetooth. But after a certain amount of time, the game cannot find the accessory. I go back to the settings, and find that bluetooth has turned itself off.

    hi Apfelwurm,
why do you say it's not normal.
it always switches itself on after i update. it just did again, this time for 7.1.2.. i t also will switch on after a restore.
i never use bluetooth and make sure it's not on for any other reason.
it's been noticed by others too.

  • Why does Facetime turn itself off?

I've been having this weird issue with my VZW iPhone 4. It seems like Facetime will turn itself off arbitrarily. I've read some folks may have had this issue if they've had an iPhone 3GS, but I've bever owned that device.
It seems like a few times a week I have to go to Settings > Phone > Facetime > On to get things going again.
    Any ideas?

I accidentally turned mine off with 4.2.6 and it would not come back on until I was told to reset network settings, turn FaceTime on, power off and on and have someone send me a text. It started right up after that.

  • Why does wifi turn itself on and off since upgrading to Mavericks?

I am able to use ethernet to get online but wifi turns itself on and off. If I turn it on automatically it connects to the network (both at work and at home) and then it turns wifi off again. If I just leave it alone wifi automatically turns on, connects to the network, and then turns itself on again. This was not happening prior to upgrading to Mavericks yesterday.

    Have you tried a SMC/PRAM reset ?
Try backing up and then deleting this file:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    from this folder:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
Now reboot and check if the issue is resolved.
If that does not work, Can you post your system.log file messages when the issue occurs and I can take a look and help.

  • Computer keeps waking up immediately after I put it to sleep

I've got a dual G5 running Panther and I put it to sleep when I go to work in the morning. Last night, I wanted to try out Tiger (yes, I know - I'm way behind the times) so I installed it on a FireWire drive and booted off it for a couple of hours to see how things worked. I then went back to my internal Panther drive, and noticed that when I hit "sleep", it goes to sleep, the screens turn off, and then for some reason I immediately hear the internal drives spin back up and the thing turns on again!! Why can't it stay asleep?!?

    That is common and in my sleep tips;
"USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit."

Sleep is one of the activities controlled by the PMU. A reset of the PMU may
    be in order:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86760
what settings will be cleared by this (what will I lose and need to set up again)? any system Settings, firmware updates, or whatever?
Also, I trust that you have reviewed your Energy saving preferences to confirm
that they are set to allow sleep, and not to disturb said sleep?
which ones in particular? I think they're fine but maybe I'm missing something that got munged somehow. Where are the "disturb"-type settings? I've got "wake on LAN access" clicked off for example. What else is there?

  • I can't turn my laptop on after I put it to sleep. What's wrong with it?

Hi. What's wrong with my laptop? I put it to sleep then won't turn on anymore.

First, you can force the Mac to shutdown by pasting in this command in Terminal (in Applications>Utilities). Only paste it in. Don't try to type it.
    sudo shutdown -h now
Hit return. You will be asked for your admin password. Nothing will appear on the screen when you type it in. This is normal. You will also get a warning about using sudo, which you can ignore. This is safe. After you enter your pword, hit return again.
Then, boot up again into Verbose Mode by holding down the v key at the startup chime. This will bring you to a screen that shows the boot sequence in text as its loading. It will go by kind of fast, but we're not interested in the bootup process. Next, do a normal shutdown and you may be brought to the same kind of text screen, which will show the shutdown sequence. (I know this works this way in Snow Leopard after booting in Verbose mode; not sure about Tiger, though.) If it hangs, it may show in what part of the shutdown process it's hanging. Have a camera or note paper ready to write down where it's getting stuck.
One other thing to try is an SMC Reset. Unplug from wall power, leave for ten minutes, then hold in the power button for five seconds. Reconnect to power and startup again.

  • IMac switches back on, after I put it to sleep?

My system often switches back on, after I have put it to sleep, so have to put it too sleep again, any idea what is going on?

Go to the Applications/Utilities folder and launch the Console application. When the Console window opens, make sure that 'All Messages' is selected in the left column, then type 'wake' in the filter search box in the upper right corner. You should see a listing of all the wake events recorded by your system, and a coded reason for the wake event. It will help provide clues.
The following article will help explain the various wake codes and what might be causing the wake event to occur. The article also provides a terminal command providing a different method for pulling up the log entries.

  • "Action Keys" mode turns itself back on after waking from sleep

    Hi gang,
I've recently bought a Folio 13, and have disabled "Action Keys Mode" in the BIOS so that the function keys work as expected.
However, if the machine goes into sleep mode, the function keys revert to their default behaviour (that is, I have to hold down "Fn" if I want to hit F5).
Rebooting the notebook fixes the problem, as the BIOS setting has not changed.
How can I *permanently* disable "Action Keys Mode" so that it stays disabled even when the notebook goes into sleep mode?
    Cheers,
    Matt

I had this problem - you can update the BIOS and it will correct the issue. I received a BIOS update via HP Support.
