Why does my mac duplicate itself in the shared section of the finder sidebar?

My mac Mini finder sidebar shared section has my mac duplicated eight times and won't allow me access to them. It appeared after the update to Yosemite. How do i get rid of them on the network?

Why does my iPad reset itself all the time?

    Hello!
The same happened to my yesterday night when I was charging my iPhone 5 with iOS 6.1. My first impression was that could it be and auto update (to install iOS 6.1.2) however I'm still on 6.1.
It erased ALL my info and shows the initial configuration wizard......this is totally a mega ***!!!!!!

  • Why does my mac mute itself

My mac has decided that it should be permanently muted. If I go into system preferences and uncheck the mute box and then turn the volume up it turns the volume down asnd rechecks the mute box.Anybody have any ideas.I have tried restoring to a week ago but still the same problem.Any help would be appreciated.

It cannot mute itself without the setting or flipping the silent switch...

  • SLOW MAC: Why does my mac run faster during the "erase free space" operation?

    Hi community!
So I've been using my Macbook Pro Late 2012 edition for just over a year and a half now, and to no surprise, I find the spinning beachball whirling away more often than I'd care to see it. So I start a full mac clean-up including deleting login items, using Appzapper to clear up my apps, using Onyx to clear up some cache elements, deleting unused files and freeing up hard drive space.
I've successfully cleared over 60% of disk space, (200GB used, 300GB free), but I find a recurring problem persisting, despite my best efforts to get rid of it. You see, every few seconds, the spinning beach ball appears and freezes up my entire desktop no matter what I'm doing. Trying even the simplest things, like opening the apps in the dock or right clicking a file takes ages, movies freeze up all the time, regardless of what app plays them, finder is slow and it has nothing to do with my ram usage (I use the app FreeMemory to check in real-time how much I'm using) or my CPU usage (Activity monitor open at all times). It has to be the drive.
So then I tried running ClamXav, and found a windows trojan, which I deleted manually, but no change.
Now, during all these stages I was regularly running erase free space opeartions (Fast x1), and noticed something curious: during the operation, my problem disappears. I still get occasional loading beach balls, and ocassional jumps in movies, but other than that, I can use my mac normally again.
So now, I'm constantly running erase free space operations and it's painfully annoying to say the least.
I've tried defragging, to no avail.
I had the problem on Mountain Lion, and upgraded to Mavericks thinking that could change it (by the way it took 18 hours to install mavericks, don't know if that's related).
In other words, I need your help. Does anybody know if I've no choice but to buy an external hardrive, backup my data, and erase my entire homedrive? Can this situation still be salvaged?
    Thanks!

  • Why does my Mac turn itself on (wakeup, startup) at night?

    I am running a Mac Mini (Intel Core 2 Duo)on OS X 10.6.7.
It irregularly turns itself on, from shut down state, at  about 4 in the morning. I have checked that there are no sheduled alarms in Calendar, or programes set to record on EyeTV, which are the only wakeups I might have set.

I had the same problem except my 27" iMac turned on every morning. I do not have a UPS - it's plugged in only to a surge protector PS. I only noticed the iMac woke up only if I woke up extra early (around 5 am). So, I got on the forums this morning to see if there were any solutions. There are lots of complicated explanations for this phenomenon.
I finally went to my Systems Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule and saw this - I unchecked the start up box - now I'll wait until tomorrow to see if it fixed the issue. I think I'll leave the "Wake for network access" alone (this was default) to see if the first step fixed the issue.

  • Why does my mac battery die before the battery reaches 0

The battery on my mac will usually hit around 20-23ish and then die. I'll try to turn it on but it acts as though the battery is actually dead. Any way to fix this?

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, contact Apple.
    Best.

  • Why does my Mac Air when on the internet the window just freezes when loading?

MacBook Air 13, 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Macintosh HD, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB, OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
When connected to the internet things run pretty smoothly, then when I change sites or load another window it sometimes starts the load and then freezes. Sometimes I can delete the window and continue with an open window or everything just quits loading. I have tried to clear history, no help; I have cleaned disc and removed large files to free space, no help. The only thing that seems to help is shutting down an restarting, sometimes have to do this more than once.

    Problem description:
When opening a page on internet it sometimes freezes and will not load. When trying other website they will not load. I’ve had this problem since loading Yosemite.

  • Why does my mac stutter when announcing the time?

I am completely updated to the latest version of OS X " 10.9.3" on my mid 2012 Macbook pro 15" and i have it set to announce the time on the hour. being said, my Mac, often stutters when trying to announce the time. i just want to know if anyone else is having this problem and if so, is there a fix for it coming in the future?

When was the last time you restarting your Mac...?
Never ever had it happen in Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion no matter how long my uptime was.
I have had slurred speech a time or two in Mavericks, but only when my uptime was over 30 days.

  • What does "extracted channel PDF" mean and why does it continually duplicate on my desktop?  I think it happens when I move a file in Finder to another file and when I copy some web files.  How do I avoid this on my Mac (Mavericks)?  Thanks for your help!

What does "extracted channel PDF" mean and why does it continually duplicate on my desktop?  I think it happens when I move a file in Finder to another file and when I copy some web files.  I have to immediately move to trash all the duplications on my desktop.  How do I avoid this on my Mac (Mavericks)?  Thanks for your help!

What application is set to open PDF files? If you CNTRL click on the file and open with Preview does the problem occur?
If not change the default application to open PDF files to Preview.
You can do this by highlighting the file and either use CMD i or Get Info , this will open a window with the info on the file with an option to change the application that opens the file.
That's all I can think of.

Sounds to me like you may have gotten a machine with hardware issues, but it's hard to say.  It will shut down if it gets too hot, but that's not a normal occurrence.  I have never seen a MacBook Pro shut down due to heat, even after lengthy 3D gaming sessions where the fans are running fast and the bottom of the machine is unpleasant to touch.
First thing I would try to do is reset the SMC.  If that doesn't help, erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch, which you should always do with a used machine anyway.
If a fresh system doesn't help, you'll need to get it checked out by Apple.
Edit: Oh, and sig is absolutely right...  please don't post in all caps!  It's very irritating.

  • Why does my mac sleep before I can put in the password?

why does my mac sleep before I can put in the password?

So you press the Power button to start up the machine, it goes through the startup process, the login window appears, and the machine sleeps before you can enter your password? Do I understand the problem correctly?
Is the battery fully charged? Is the LED on the MagSafe plug lit, and if so, is it green or orange?
If the adapter plug is not lit, rest the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it still doesn't light after that, troubleshoot the AC adapter:

Post back with answers to the above questions and any results from the SMC reset or adapter troubleshooting.

Why does my mac mini's mouse show a pinwheel every time I hover over the date area? Also, sometimes the date/time shows up incorrectly. It started happening after I updated to OS X Mountain Lion.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Why does my mac when i try to format my stick say that unable to write to the last block of the device

i bought a new mac with osx lion 10.7.why does my mac when i try to format my transcend 8 gb stick in disk utility say that it is unable to write to the last block of the device?please help me

This may or may not work, but it's worth a try.
Using Disk Utility, try an re-partition the drive into two partitions, making the second partition very small (a megabyte or two), then see if you can format the first partition normally. Leave the second partition alone.
If this works, then the first partiton is what you will use.

  • Why does my Mac stay on the white screen when I turn it on?

Why does my Mac stay on white screen when I turn it on?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 3
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 4
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 5
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 6.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 6
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 7
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 8
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 9
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 10
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
