Why does Verizon expect me to buy a wireless network extender?

My wife and I have been Verizon customers for 15 years for reasons that aren't entirely clear. We recently moved (less than two miles) and now our phones do not work in our new home. Period. In order to make or receive a call or text, I have to physically leave my home and go outside. I live in Florida, it rains and is usually pretty hot. You can see why I would consider this an inconvenience.
I spent over an hour on the line with "tech support" only to be told that I live in a magic "null area" between two towers and would it please be my honor to buy a $250 wireless network extender? So, let's be honest, I laughed. I pay for my service as it is. Quite a bit. Even with a discount through work. They let me know that service isn't guaranteed in a building, even AFTER they tell me that I live in a "null zone". (Oddly enough, my best friend is on Sprint and can talk all day long inside my house.) I work in what would best be described as a concrete bunker and my phone works there, but on my days off, apparently I'm expected to "rough it" and go drive around if I need to communicate with my wife. To be fair, the guy said they'd offer one to me for $100 off, but I'm more interested in getting the service I pay for at the price I already pay for it.
I don't have a home phone, I don't want a home phone. I'm supposed to be living in the future where things are wireless and are expected to work without tying me down or making me go outside when it's like...90-ish.
So, how about it Verizon? Can you make this right, or do I just man up and pay the ETF and become a new Sprint customer?

You have fallen into a common misconception about cellular devices. You may EXPECT them to work, but the fact remains that because they ARE wireless, they do not work everywhere NOR are they expected to NOR are they guaranteed to. Simply because you EXPECT something to work everywhere does not make it true.
IF having a cellular signal in your home is important AND you are unwilling to pay for the network extender even when Verizon offers 40% off the price, then you should go with another provider which does have good signal inside your home. Hopefully your new provider will not have a problem with service in any other areas where you consider it a necessity and is harder to find a work around.

I'm sending my bill in exchange for a provided service. The activation fee is garbage, and IMO, if smaller carriers can live without it (because they are), Verizon doesn't need to charge it. You are correct, just because other people do it, doesn't make it right. It also "doesn't make it wrong".
Verizon has chosen a price they charge for providing a service. Part of that price is an "upgrade" fee if you choose to purchase a phone at a ~$400 discount. ALL this is doing is lowering the amount of discount on the phone. It is, however, the price Verizon has set to provide their service. You are paying it in exchange for that provided service. You may not agree with it, that is your choice and are free to go elsewhere. If you are in the position to pay this "upgrade" fee, you are NOT under contract and are free to change without penalty. Your choice. If you pay it, you have made your choice.
Yes, other "smaller carriers" can live without it because they are forced to, not because they "want" to or because it is "right". They have to have some sort of incentive to attract customers. The bigger carriers do this by providing a larger footprint for their service. Smaller carriers cannot do so and have to resort to other methods. Lower price is one of those. There are trade-offs in life. Choose your trade-offs. I prefer to pay a slightly higher price for more reliable service. I have been with several providers in the past, Verizon provides me the most reliable service of those I have tried.

Thanks for the zip code pfekete. I looked into the coverage in your area and I do see you are in an extended 1X data coverage which explains why you're not connecting to 3G. What phone do you have? We may be able to advise you on how to adjust the settings so it picks up the strongest signal. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Verizon wi fi for hot spots does not work with Windows 8. For verification go to FAQs about Verizon Wi-Fi for FiOS Internet,
http://www.verizon.com/Support/Residential/Internet/fiosinternet/networking/setup/wi-fi/124650.htm , and click on How do I know if my laptop or netbook is compatible with Verizon Wi-Fi? . Verizon wireless home network does work well with Windows 8.
Since you can't even download the wi fi for hot spots software if you have Windows 8, I don't know how to use compatability mode to get around the problem,

Ok, I solved it.
I followed this steps:
1- Turn Off Wi-Fi from the Wireless menu item
2- From the OS X Finder, hit Command+Shift+G and enter the following path:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
3- Within this folder locate and select the following files:
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
 com.apple.network.identification.plist
com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist 
NetworkInterfaces.plist 
preferences.plist
4- Move all of these files into a folder on your Desktop called ‘wifi backups’ or something similar – we’re backing these up just in case you break something but if you regularly backup your Mac you can just delete the files instead since you could restore from Time Machine if needed.
5- Reboot the Mac
6- Turn ON WI-Fi from the wireless network menu again

Airport is the trade name Apple uses for WiFi. The Mac built-in WiFi hardware is called Airport. The Apple manufactured WiFi base station(s) router are called Airport Extreme and Airport Express (the Apple Time Capsule is also a WiFi base station/router).
A Mac can connet to other manufactures WiFi base stations.
You can also connect to a WiFi bridging device via ethernet and get WiFi access that way, although BDAqua's suggestion of a USB WiFi device might make more sense if it is a Mac laptop.
If you are NOT talking about WiFi, and perhaps talking about using the cell phone cellular network, then you can use Bluetooth to pair your Mac with a cell phone that has the ability to act as a cellular modem for your Mac, you can get a MiFi device that acts as a local WiFi base stations and connects to the Cellular network, and you can get cellular USB devices that can provide cellular connections for the Mac.

Verizon Wireless Network Extender and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Customer Service experience

It was a dark and stormy night...
For the past eight years, I had been happy with Verizon wireless service. Great coverage and rarely a dropped call. However, all of that changed when I moved into a lovely mid-century modern condominium. The solid concrete walls and ceilings were blocking my attempts to communicate with the outside world (i.e. order pizza).
Enter the Verizon Wireless Network Extender! My own personal cell tower! Alas, the VWNE was $250, which was a lot of money. So, being the resourceful recycling advocate that I am, I procured a refurbished one and hooked it up to my network. Then I called Verizon to begin what would soon become one of the Bottom 10 Least Enjoyable Experiences in customer service history (note: obvious foreshadowing).
The first technician I spoke with was Benjamin, who was actually quite helpful. He noted the VWNE's MAC address and other information before attempting to allow me to access my unit. But he could not. Why? Apparently the unit was still registered to another Verizon customer. He told me the matter would be forwarded to "Verizon Correspondence Support" who would contact the registered owner and get their approval to reassign the unit.
A week later, I called in to ask about the status of my request, but was told by Darryl (another tech from the VWNE department) that the "Verizon Correspondence Support" department did not exist. Did. Not. Exist? Fine, I explained the situation again, and Darryl eventually told me he would submit a special access form which may resolve the problem. He apologized for the mixup, thanked me for my patience, and told me to wait 24-48 hours for his return call with the results.
120 hours later, I called to ask about the status of the change access form because I had not received a callback. Michelle, another representative of VWNE support, told me there was no record of this form having been submitted. No. Record...? After which, she made no effort to help me after reading through my transcript. In fact, quite the opposite. To paraphrase...
"I'm sorry we wasted two weeks of your time leading you to believe we had a solution. Actually, there is no Verizon Correspondence Department, there is no special access form, and no tech will be calling you back. Furthermore, I will not allow you to use our unit because the previous owner hasn't filled out Release Form 27B stroke 6. For all I know it might have been stolen. Perhaps by you? I guess we'll never know for sure, because I won't contact the owner for any reason. In fact, there is nothing I can do to help you whatsoever. But if you like, feel free to throw our network adapter in a landfill. Thank you and have a nice day."
OK Michelle, here's the deal. I don't even WANT this doohickey. You see, all I want is for my phone to work. That's why I am calling you. To get THIS piece of your equipment working, at my expense, so that I can continue to be a Verizon customer. Seems like I'm doing my part. Why is this so difficult?

Lesson of the story? DON'T BE A MICHELLE. If a customer is in trouble and you can't solve his/her problem, contact a supervisor and work out an alternative. In my example, perhaps Verizon could have provided me with an "official" VWNE? At a discount? Or have a technician sent out to examine the signal? Really, *anything* is better than being brushed off. Follow up: I acquired another VWNE from a local seller, just in case he had to be contacted for the Nuclear Priority Phone Release Code (geez). Ironically, it wasn't necessary, because said fellow had already left Verizon after too many negative customer service issues. Oops.
The good news is that Verizon was able to properly activate the second unit. I was connected to a VWNE tech named Bertha who was VERY helpful and treated me like a human being. Which made all the difference and restored my faith in humanity. I requested that my story be relayed to upper management so that the hordes of secondhand VWNE buyers wouldn't also get burned by Verizon's "hands off and look elsewhere" policy. Bingo. Finally. Done.
Epilogue: Until Verizon eases up on their needlessly stringent policy, beware the unchecked VWNE! Be sure to get the MAC code and check it with a local store/tech support before buying it.

try disabling email scanning for incoming mail.
One of the last things that occurs is the mail server and Thunderbird sign off on "where we are up to" and Thunderbird stores this state information in the popstate.dat file in your profile (there is one in each POP mail account folder). If the anti virus, or you for that matter, end the conversation a few seconds early that hand off does not occur and the popstate is not stored.

Why does Verizon shuffle arond local channels?

I have a question.
Now, I currently have DirecTV but I've been thinking about getting Verizon FiOS when it is finally available in my area. One thing though that I'm noticing about Verizon is they appear to be doing this same crazy practice that the local Cable Companies does... It drove me crazy all the time... Basically, it is where they shift all the local channel numbers around so you have to keep stopping to think about where the channel has been moved to.
For example in the Boston, the local terrestrial channels are like this.
2(WGBH), 4(WWBZ), 5(WCVB), 7(WHDH), 11(PBS New Hampshire), 25(WFXT), ... 44(WGBX), 56(WLVI) 62, 68,etc. Simple enough. Now thankfully DirecTV keeps this same pattern...
However on Verizon for say the city of Belmont, MA (Zipcode "02476") the channel lineup is like this.. 38 comes in on 3. 25 comes in on 8. 56 jumps to 12... etc. No kind of normalcy basically....
Why did Verizon do this????I see they already have channels going over 1000 so why didn't they vacate 0-99 nationally so the local channels can fall into their correct slot and then start the cable stations like say above channel 99???
In having DirecTV, I've noticed the way that company gets around needing to shift all the local channels all over is they start all of their cable TV stations above channel 99. This leaves 2-99 as open- so that the local channel can goto its correct allotment anywhere in the USA. It just seems logical to leave the local channels in their true slot so I'm wondering what was soo appealing about this type of format where everything gets scattered all over.
Does anyone have some idea of what I'm missing and perhaps if there's some kind of method to this madness-- which I've never quite understood?

I'm glad I was able to reassure you, but I now think I went too far. Looking at your channel listings you provide, Verizon has some major problems to make it all line up. And looking in more detail at ours, it isn't as simple as I made it out to be.
Verizon, IMO to their credit, has tried to standardize channel assignments for most everything around the country. Easier for them I suspect. Anyway, they start their SD cable channels at 50 in most places, I think; that means that UHF channels 50 and above must be relocated somewhere, and they do that, down into the low range. Here in Texas, some of the higher broadcast channels, but not all, are relocated - 27 to 7, 33 to 9, 39 to 10, etc, while 21 is on 21, 29 is on 29, etc.Verizon puts the local PEG cable channels at 30-47, then TV Guide at 48, and local weather at 49, then the real cable channels 50 and above. So all of the local broadcast channels that they carry are reloacated if necessary to below 30 here.
The HD channels (the ones that do offer HD channels) do follow the scheme I mentioned, local + 500.
When I made my statement earlier, I was really thinking of the "major" channels (ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS, etc), because those are pretty much the only local channels I watch, I forgot about all of the various smaller channels (religeous, Spanish language, etc) that they do carry. Sorry, I really didn't mean to make a mistake, I should have actually looked at the lineup first.

To get Google back on the Safari Menu Bar, click on Safari in the upper left corner of the window>click on Preferences>click on the General tab>In the Default Search Engine box, select Google in the right hand drop down list.

Airport does'nt want to connect to ANY wireless network

hello there.
once more someone writing who is experiencing problems with the macbooks incorporated airport.
after joining a 3rd party wifi and returning home, my macbook is unable to connect to ANY wifi network. the bar is completely grey, but airport finds all available networks. in the network dialog appears "airport is active, but not connected to any network", indicated by a red lamp. i am also not able to connect to my network's router typing its local ip in the browser.
rebooting hundreds of times, removing all networks from the list and re-adding my WEP-secured home network did not solve the problem.
i also tried almost all solutions apple offers to fix airport problems including installing the newest firmware, but all this resulted the same.
in the diagnostics, airport seems to work normally, exept that i cannot connect to any network. furthermore, now my macbook does not accept the (correct!!!) WEP for the wifi, telling me that it is invalid - i tried it with and without the "$" in the beginning.
does anybody have an idea how to bring me back online?

IM having a very similar problem myself! i have my Macbook for around a year now and i have never actually had any problems with it apart from the wireless connection. my router is a speedtouch 576 and i have never been able to pick up a signal.
I dont fully know how to connect it to a wireless network even if there was signal because I have never been able to go online wirelessly. when i do get a signal a bar appears then disapears several times and when i try to connect it says password is wrong even though it might be correct (using all different 128's and using the $ )
not sure if it is a hardware roblem but I wondered if i could take it to an apple care store and see what they think about it. perhaps thats the best thing you could do if you have applecare?

I have the password for my wireless network. This password works perfectly and is accepted by my MacBook, my iPhone, and friends Windows machines when they come for a visit.
When I enter my password into iPad 2, it seems to accept the password, with a checkmark next to my wireless network name.
However, next to the Wi-Fi symbol it says “Not Connected”.

This is a user-to-user technical support forum - Apple is not listening or responding here. Some Apple employees administer these forums but it's extremely rare that Apple ever posts anything here.
Note that, while there may be a problem with your iPad, the fact that another computer connected to this network does not prove that there is a problem with your iPad. There could still be a bug in the router software which only shows up on the iPad (not all WiFi devices, especially low-power devices, use exactly the same features of the IEEE 802.11x protocols). Test your iPad on some other networks. If it has problems there as well then it needs service or replacement.
