Verizon Wireless Network Extender and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Customer Service experience

It was a dark and stormy night...
For the past eight years, I had been happy with Verizon wireless service. Great coverage and rarely a dropped call. However, all of that changed when I moved into a lovely mid-century modern condominium. The solid concrete walls and ceilings were blocking my attempts to communicate with the outside world (i.e. order pizza).
Enter the Verizon Wireless Network Extender! My own personal cell tower! Alas, the VWNE was $250, which was a lot of money. So, being the resourceful recycling advocate that I am, I procured a refurbished one and hooked it up to my network. Then I called Verizon to begin what would soon become one of the Bottom 10 Least Enjoyable Experiences in customer service history (note: obvious foreshadowing).
The first technician I spoke with was Benjamin, who was actually quite helpful. He noted the VWNE's MAC address and other information before attempting to allow me to access my unit. But he could not. Why? Apparently the unit was still registered to another Verizon customer. He told me the matter would be forwarded to "Verizon Correspondence Support" who would contact the registered owner and get their approval to reassign the unit.
A week later, I called in to ask about the status of my request, but was told by Darryl (another tech from the VWNE department) that the "Verizon Correspondence Support" department did not exist. Did. Not. Exist? Fine, I explained the situation again, and Darryl eventually told me he would submit a special access form which may resolve the problem. He apologized for the mixup, thanked me for my patience, and told me to wait 24-48 hours for his return call with the results.
120 hours later, I called to ask about the status of the change access form because I had not received a callback. Michelle, another representative of VWNE support, told me there was no record of this form having been submitted. No. Record...? After which, she made no effort to help me after reading through my transcript. In fact, quite the opposite. To paraphrase...
"I'm sorry we wasted two weeks of your time leading you to believe we had a solution. Actually, there is no Verizon Correspondence Department, there is no special access form, and no tech will be calling you back. Furthermore, I will not allow you to use our unit because the previous owner hasn't filled out Release Form 27B stroke 6. For all I know it might have been stolen. Perhaps by you? I guess we'll never know for sure, because I won't contact the owner for any reason. In fact, there is nothing I can do to help you whatsoever. But if you like, feel free to throw our network adapter in a landfill. Thank you and have a nice day."
OK Michelle, here's the deal. I don't even WANT this doohickey. You see, all I want is for my phone to work. That's why I am calling you. To get THIS piece of your equipment working, at my expense, so that I can continue to be a Verizon customer. Seems like I'm doing my part. Why is this so difficult?
"Sorry"
Lesson of the story? DON'T BE A MICHELLE. If a customer is in trouble and you can't solve his/her problem, contact a supervisor and work out an alternative. In my example, perhaps Verizon could have provided me with an "official" VWNE? At a discount? Or have a technician sent out to examine the signal? Really, *anything* is better than being brushed off. After being brushed off.
After being brushed off.

Follow up: I acquired another VWNE from a local seller, just in case he had to be contacted for the Nuclear Priority Phone Release Code (geez). Ironically, it wasn't necessary, because said fellow had already left Verizon after too many negative customer service issues. Oops.
The good news is that Verizon was able to properly activate the second unit. I was connected to a VWNE tech named Bertha who was VERY helpful and treated me like a human being. Which made all the difference and restored my faith in humanity. I requested that my story be relayed to upper management so that the hordes of secondhand VWNE buyers wouldn't also get burned by Verizon's "hands off and look elsewhere" policy. Bingo. Finally. Done.
Epilogue: Until Verizon eases up on their needlessly stringent policy, beware the unchecked VWNE! Be sure to get the MAC code and check it with a local store/tech support before buying it.

• I was trying to purchase a trial version and the process just told me to contact customer service. ??

I am trying to upgrade from a trial version....everything seemed to be in order...then "problem" contact customer service...??

Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software _sl_mostpopular.html. Next to Acrobat select Buy and then change the box from subscription to upgrade. The upgrade is only valid for previous users of AA 9 through XI. If you have not purchased Acrobat before or have one of the qualifying products, you will need to purchase the full product which seems to have jumped substantially in price recently.

• Can Apple TV replace Airport Express as wireless network extender?

I currently have a 1TB Time Capsule plus an Airport Express 802.11n 5Ghz setup as a wireless network extender to the TC. I also use AirTunes on the AE tied into our home theater system. I'm contemplating purchasing an Apple TV and cannot figure out (after browsing forums and Apple.com) if the Apple TV can fully replace the Airport Express for both AirTunes AND as my wireless network extender? In other words, if I buy the Apple TV to I need to have it serve side-by-side with the AE, or can I move the AE to another location to even further extend the network range? Many thanks for any help on this topic!

Yes, that's correct. However, the OP wasn't asking if they could do that. They wanted to use the ATV to extend the network to other devices, and it won't do that. It will connect to the network even if the network runs off a single computer as a opposed to a router. But devices not connected to the computer or router can't connect to the ATV.

• Why does Verizon expect me to buy a wireless network extender?

My wife and I have been Verizon customers for 15 years for reasons that aren't entirely clear. We recently moved (less than two miles) and now our phones do not work in our new home. Period. In order to make or receive a call or text, I have to physically leave my home and go outside. I live in Florida, it rains and is usually pretty hot. You can see why I would consider this an inconvenience.
I spent over an hour on the line with "tech support" only to be told that I live in a magic "null area" between two towers and would it please be my honor to buy a $250 wireless network extender? So, let's be honest, I laughed. I pay for my service as it is. Quite a bit. Even with a discount through work. They let me know that service isn't guaranteed in a building, even AFTER they tell me that I live in a "null zone". (Oddly enough, my best friend is on Sprint and can talk all day long inside my house.) I work in what would best be described as a concrete bunker and my phone works there, but on my days off, apparently I'm expected to "rough it" and go drive around if I need to communicate with my wife. To be fair, the guy said they'd offer one to me for $100 off, but I'm more interested in getting the service I pay for at the price I already pay for it.
I don't have a home phone, I don't want a home phone. I'm supposed to be living in the future where things are wireless and are expected to work without tying me down or making me go outside when it's like...90-ish.
So, how about it Verizon? Can you make this right, or do I just man up and pay the ETF and become a new Sprint customer?
Thanks,
Chris and Jen Hedeen

You have fallen into a common misconception about cellular devices. You may EXPECT them to work, but the fact remains that because they ARE wireless, they do not work everywhere NOR are they expected to NOR are they guaranteed to. Simply because you EXPECT something to work everywhere does not make it true.
IF having a cellular signal in your home is important AND you are unwilling to pay for the network extender even when Verizon offers 40% off the price, then you should go with another provider which does have good signal inside your home. Hopefully your new provider will not have a problem with service in any other areas where you consider it a necessity and is harder to find a work around.

I would say that you would want to look into the "Exchange Mode" for GMail. That would allow your iPhone to sync calendars, contacts and email with GMail just fine. Doing the same with your outlook should also then sync those same with your PC using Outlook. I've done teh iPhone side of this, but I since I don't run Lookout for my email client, I'm not sure how that will work on the PC side.

• Connecting a macbook pro to a verizon wireless network

how do i connect a macbook pro to a verizon wireless network? Wi-Fi connection automatically assigns an IP address and indicates that the Mac won't be able to connect to the internet. Two other MacBook Pros connect to the network without any problems. These Macs travel from home to school and back again and automatically reconnect when they are brought into the house.

I have read a few corporate IT policies and they are all PC-centric.
Unless your mac runs any windows tools such as Bootcamp Wine, Crossover, or a VM in parallels or VMware then your mac has no virus implications.
A few years ago word documents could be infected with macro viruses and although did not affect a mac a mac could pass them on. Up to date versions of Microsoft Word documents are not vulnerable to this flaw.
You could install ClamAV its a free anti virus app for the mac that would keep your IT dept happy.
Maybe I can find out what the WEP key is with a utility of some kind.
If you had a compatible usb wifi dongle and kismac you could crack their WEP key but this would be probably illegal in your country so I dont condone this activity but if you got written permission from your employer to give them a free penetration test, something that normally involves hiring a security company this would save them money and highlight the insecurity on their network.
Or use an Ethernet connection.

• MacBook Pro cannot locate Time Capsule on Verizon Wireless Network

Here's what I have: both my MacBook Pro and my Time Capsule are connected to the same wireless network. (I used the "join an existing wireless network" on the Time Capsule.) But when I go to back up, it says the disk is unavailable. And when I open the Airport Utility, I don't see my Time Capsule. Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions!
It can be a tricky proposition to configure the Time Capsule (TC) to "join" another wireless network because the settings on the TC and network must match exactly.
Try temporarily connecting an ethernet cable from your computer to the one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC to see if that will allow AirPort Utility to "see" the TC.
If this does not work after a few tries, you'll need to "hard reset" the TC by holding in the reset button until the amber light blinks more quickly. Keep holding a few more seconds and then release.
Open AirPort Utility up and it should find the TC. Try the following setup:
Click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab below the icons to assign a name, device password and adjust Time Zone settings, etc.
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network. If you don't see this choice, hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name = Exact name of your Verizon wireless network
Wireless Security = Exact same setting that your Verizon router is using. This is where almost all "join" errors occur because the settings don't match exactly. Even when they do, there can sometimes be problems.
Wireless Password = Same password as your Verizon wireless network
Verify Password
Click Update. Close AirPort Utility. The TC should restart in 15-20 seconds and you should have a green light. Log onto your Verizon wireless network and you should be able to "see" the TC now. To confirm, open Macintosh HD and look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window.
If the TC is located close to your Verizon router, it is easier (and more reliable) to configure the TC to connect that way, rather than using wireless. You'll still be able to perform backups over your regular Verizon network. Post back if this is an option for you and we can go over this type of setup.

• Network extender both the sys/GPS lights remain red

Until recently I was a ATT customer, when I moved to Franklinton NC ATT provided me with a brand new (no charge) MICRO CELL/EXTENDER. Probably took me more time to take the unit out of the box then to set it up as, you simply plug the nic cable into the wireless router or hub, plug the unit into the AC outlet and it is on. This unit set rite on the floor under the window for close to 3.5 years. The only issue was that if the power went out, you would lose you cell service. The other issue was no one else with a ATT phone could get either a text message, phone call etc. while at work in Chapel Hill Med facilities. I visited
the Wake Forest Verizon Wireless store, explained all the above and then some to the sales person, We were assured that we would no longer need the MICRO CELL/EXTENDER and that according to the VERIZON map COVERAGE was excellent. This sounded great, and as it was time to get new phones we ordered two of the new Galaxy 5S phones. We ask the sales persons to add 2 names to the billing so that if one did not have time the other could follow-up on issues (of course that did not happen) Anyway the phones arrived. Well one of us works from home While conducting business I had 5 dropped called with this one customer (I could hear them saying "hello" hello", if you can hear me I can not hear you,) I found that I had to call them back, while explaining that these were new phones and do not work on my ATT MICRO CELL/EXTENDER. I uncounted a number of experiences both personal/business. I then called verizon support and explained the above. A service ticket was opened with a tech (not sure) being sent out to my area, Days later I was informed that I would require a MICRO CELL/EXTENDER alone with the price of same. That is not what I purchased. Since then after calling back I spoke with a very nice young lady and explained the above as the young lady was very sympathetic as were the other techs I had already spoken to and said she would see what could be done regarding the MICRO CELL/EXTENDER. After a brief hold, I was told that instead of the full price I could get one from them around $170.00, I did not feel that since the issues that occurred was not do to my hap haphazardly rushing into a contract with Verizon (also I was reminded) when speaking other Techs that "well you can take the product back". Anyway the young lady returned and related that a MICRO CELL/EXTENDER would be sent out, but because the Easter holiday (2014) I would probably not get it until Tues following Easter Monday. Well it did not arrive on Tuesday nor by Wed. as well as the tracking # provided Fedex had no record of such. I recontacted Verizon and the Tech was able to pull up the info after I explained what I was looking for. I was informed that it appears that the MICRO CELL/EXTENDER as promised wa denied. This tech was able to located the tech who indicated that the device would be sent out. I am told that a new one would not be sent out, she went back to the same person who approved the initial one. Here again she returned and related that she has been approved to send out a refurbished device. I related that if that it the best you can do and as long as it is working to send it. I received the refurbished device connected it and was only able to get the power/WAN lights blue after more than several day. This alone with various trouble shooting tips/tricks etc (including wiring it through a wire, directly into the modem, through a hub/ attaching the external antenna cable/ standing on one leg and hold the unit up in the air. I t only got worse, all the lights went red, or the power light would blink completely out, etc. i reached out to Verizon again and was sent out a replacement device (refurbished). Well it does the same thing. prior to all of the above, I was also directed to contacted my ISP, to have them open port 500, as according to a tool that one of the techs provided me indicated that it was closed. TWC indicated that they do not block ports. HELP, HELP, HELP, HELP
HELP, HELP. And please no more surveys until the problem is solved. But I did get your BILL asking for payment.

Wow! I'm sorry about your experience with our service dreadlocs22. I see you have performed all the steps we would go through with you including speaking with our upper level technical support group. The ticket is our last step for trying to fix the issue. If the upper level technical support team have provided you with the information regarding contacting y our ISP this would be all that there able to do to get this resolved. We can review the ticket to get a better idea of the final resolution for a better explain. You can send us a private message, chat , facebook us or send us a message via

• My airport express is used as a network extender and it is very slow

Both my airport extreme and the airport express have green lights but the connection is very slow. Any ideas?

OK, thanks for the info. 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) will be fine.
Since both your devices will support the "extend a wireless network" feature, check the following using AirPort Utility. When you open AirPort Utility, both your Extreme and Express should be displayed on the left side of the window.
Click on the Extreme to select it and then click on Manual Setup. Click on the Wireless tab just below the row of icons at the top of the pane. Make sure there is a check mark next to "allow this network to be extended". Update to save changes if needed.
Then click on the Express to select it in AirPort Utility. Click Manual Setup and click on the Wireless tab. Make sure that the Wireless Mode is set to "Extend a wireless network". Select the name of the wireless network created by your Extreme if it is not already selected. Make sure that there is a check mark next to "allow wireless clients". Click Update to save any changes.
These settings will insure that your network is performing up to its capability. In general, a good starting location for the Express is a spot that is approximately half way between the Extreme and the area to be covered by the Express. You can experiment from there on the Express location for best results. Check the speed of your network at various locations by holding down the Option key while you click on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of your screen.
Please post back on your findings or any additional questions.

• "there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the device"

I get this error when trying to have my Airport (for wireless printer sharing) join my current O2 Broadband wireless network:
*AirPort Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after restarting.*
*The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again.*
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

This has been a total joke...Same problems as many here and zero response from Apple! I've had an AX for 3 years or so and it has worked fine, that is until it dropped its connection 2 days ago. I went to reset and the utility prompted me to do some updates...then magically it all went down the tubes!
*"The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."*...look familiar? Well, I tried everything including the many possible fixes listed here at the discussions...and of coarse NOTHING. I decided that maybe it had just out-lived itself and bought a brand new AX yesterday...funny SAME PROBLEM. Now all the tinkering is affecting my network. I returned the new AX today, and surprise the people at the Apple Store had never heard of the issues, let alone have idea of what to do next! VERY MAD!
Any new solutions would be great! THX.

• If I buy the iPad 2 with 3g, can I use it on a wireless network without using the 3g?

If I buy the iPad 2 with 3g, can I use it on a wireless network without using the 3g?

I leave both 3G and Wireless permanently enabled. I find that whenever I am within range of one of my chosen Wireless networks it automatically uses Wi-Fi rather than 3G. When I am not my Ipad2 uses 3G.
So in essence Wi-Fi takes priority over 3G.

• Can't find the iBahn wireless network here at the Anaheim Marriott.

I'm using the iBahn wireless network offered by the Marriott for my laptop, but my iPad2 will not even pick up the signal. It is a pay connection, will this cause the ipad to not even recognize the signal? How do I get that changed so that I can actually use the ipad?

How did you have to sign up for the network on your laptop? It could be a hidden network thus not broadcasting its SSID and you will not see it. To connect to a hidden network you use the join other option and the the SSID, security type and password.

• I have a new Epson wireless printer connected and the iPad recognizes it but it won't print. What is AirPrint and how do I connect it?

I have a new Epson wireless printer connected and the iPad recognizes it but it still won't print. What is AirPrint & how do I connect to it?

Patti-
Is your Epson printer on Apple's list of AirPrint capable printers? See <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356>.
If it is an AirPrint printer, then your WiFi router may not correctly handle Bonjour data required by AirPrint. Contact the router's manufacturer to see if there is a change to its setup or a firmware update, that will make it work.
One other possibility is that there could be a print job stuck in the iPad's print queue. Double click the iPad's Home button and a row of recent Apps will appear along the bottom of the screen. Scroll across and see if the Print Center is there.
