Why don't .swf files seem to cache on a browser?

I'm using Safari on Mac OS X 10. I've got a 3 mb .swf on a
web page. It seems that if I hit a "refresh" on the browser, it
loads the whole thing from the beginning, with the progress bar and
everything. I don't have anything set to clear the cache as far as
I know. Is this normal?
What I'm trying to do is have a movie that shows a bunch of
operating screens from some software as different frames that you
can navigate to, like a virtual version of the software. I had
hoped that once the user had already loaded the movie, that i could
provide URLs (in other web pages) that link directly to various
pages of the movie using FlashVars. This works sort of, but it
reloads the entire movie from the beginning with each different
URL. Is there some way to keep the movie in memory so that this
doesn't need to happen?

The standalone Flash Player (Projector) is not updated with the Flash Player browser add-ons; you need to download the latest standalone player manually from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

why doesnt my swf file play on the server? but it plays on my computer.
what do i need to do to make it work?

It easier to see why the file might not be playing on the server if you provide a link to the file on the server.  That allows for checking if files are where they should be.
In your case you may want to do some repairs on the html file that you linked.  It appears as though the tags are out of whack and possibly the embedding is as well.  What you should do is let Flash generate the html page when you publish the swf.  You are normally going to get the best results letting Flash create the embedding code.

Why don't .png files display in Safari for iPhone, iPad?

    James,
Thanks for your response.  The image was on a site I maintain.  I have already replaced the image with a jpg, which works fine.  I believe I can duplicate the problem, if you think it is worth it.  Gimme a few...
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about2.html is the page with the png I restored to use.
http://www.oaksbible.org/Contents/about.html is the page with the replacement jpg
Just checked.  The png still does not display on iPhone(5) or iPad(3).  The image was also made by me in pixelmator and both (png and jpg) were exprted from pixelmator.
    thanks again,

  • Why does embeded .swf file goes crazy in IE but not in other browsers?

    hi everyone
I'm building a SharePoint page with an embedded .swf file that is capable of detecting the current URL to activate and show content. Everything goes smoothly in all the browsers I've tested it except IE. When I open the SharePoint page in IE the .swf just reproduces the frames non stop, It completely ignores my scripts and I cant find anything that could be responsible of this. besides the url detection script, i just have simple button configuration for the timeline and general stops.
    any idea?.....anyone?

Normally when swf's play differently for different browsers it is due to the embedding code used in the html page.

  • Why won't swf file play embedded videos?

I created a swf file in inDesign.  I embedded 3 videos within the document, all of which are embedded (stored on my host's server).  I created the videos in Premiere Pro, saving them as H.264 (mp4), with sound codec AAC.  I placed each video on its appropriate page in inDesign using the media dialogue box, choosing a poster image and a set of controls that become visible when hovered over.  The swf file I placed onto a webpage in Adobe Muse, then uploaded that page to its host.  When the website comes up, and I click on the page that holds the swf file, it looks good ... I have page-turning applied, and that works fine.  But, when I go to click on a video, the frame just disappears.
Here's the caveat:  After saving the swf file, I opted for it to open in my browser window.  When inspecting the file in the browser, the videos work fine.
I have opened the webpage in Chrome, Firefox & IE, but the videos won't play.
Here's a link to the webpage:
    www.fridayharborpowersquadron.com/newsletter.html
Please help, if you can.  I would hate to have to start over by rebuilding every single page in inDesign file inside of Muse (since Muse can't take a PDF file.  I thought about saving each ID page as a jpg, then building a fullscreen slideshow in Muse, then placiing each page inside of the slideshow presentation .. then writing html code into those jpg pages in order to link my videos from vimeo or youtube ... but I dont' want to go that route.  I've put in way too many hours as it is.
Sure hope someone can help ...

Also, where you live is a consideration. I live in East Africa, and due to the servers in the surrounding areas, I had to subscribe to a VPN as well as make sure I had the right plugins.

  • Swf file has stopped playing in 'live' browser only

    Hello everyone,
Hope you can help with this, whilst working on my site one of the swf files stopped playing when viewed in the browser (live). The file plays ok from Dreamweaver from both local view and remote view. Went onto web server cpanel and played the swf file ok from there as well. Have checked the code and all seems fine, I wasn't even working with that file when it went wrong, all I done was replaced a png picture with a swf file on a different part of the page, this new swf plays fine along with all other swf files on my site. I have uploaded and syncronised both the page and swf files again but still no joy.
I really am stumped for an answer, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stuart

Here's the link, but after 3 hours of not playing it started to play by itself after I added a favicon (which still isn't working) to the index page.
That is really strange and a bit worrying as it seems to have a mind of it's own. It also happened once before on another page when I was adding content to the site. I was able to kickstart that one by uploading the page again from local.
The swf file which wasn't playing is midway down page showing drawings.
    http://www.joinerycadsolutions.com/St_Johns.html
At least it's working now although I feel scared to touch the site in case I loose it/another again.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Calling method from SWF file wtih javascript, when swf file is not loaded in any browser

    Hi There,
I have a question regarding flex and javascript integration:
    1. We have created certain components and bundle them in swf. these swf file uses webservice to connect to backend code written in java.
    2. We have deployed swf file and backend on the same tomcat server.
    3. Backend server send some datapoint to UI and plot graph and displyaed to user.
    4. Now if user generate graph from datapoint and want to export it, we are tranferring image of that graph from UI to backend. No issues in this process.
    5. Now the question is. let say user has not open any swf file in browser and backend scheduling job want to generate the graph. How we will connect to swf file.
    6. Is ther any way we can connect or call method of swf from java/jsp/html/javascript code in this scenario without loading swf file in browser??
    Please help me!!!
    Thanks
    Sonu Kumar

Both test sites work just fine for me.
The "Update plugin" message is exactly what would be displayed if no .swfobject file at all was found... so it may not be the "version11" thing but rather, perhaps something else is messed up with the .swfobject file.
File can be found in both folders:
    http://www.pureimaginationcakes.com/test/Scripts/swfobject_modified.js
    http://www.pureimaginationcakes.com/Scripts/swfobject_modified.js
and file does download when downloading the html page (just check the cache).... but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working.... Hummmmm????

  • Swf files won't play in IE7 browser window

I am using Windows XP Pro and I have updated the flash
player, yet any webpage ending in ".swf" won't play. It did not too
long ago though. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

When I Generate, the link points to file:///c:/users/...../www.[website
    address]file.swf
    <file:///c:\users\.....\www.%5bwebsite%20address%5dfile.swf> .  It's looking
for the file in the generated project, but it looks confused. J
I looked to see if I could import the files, but there doesn't seem to be
    any import for swf files.
Can I simply put them in the directory with the project files, and point the
    link that them there?
I don't want to publish to see what it's looking for when it's published,
since it's a client's site, and I don't want them to see something that
    isn't working.
    Thanks!

The original SWF file opens in Flash Player, but when I

you either didn't clear your cache or you uploaded your html and/or swf to the wrong location.  retry.

  • Swf file won't play automatically in browser

I am creating a website using flash, photoshop, and
dreamweaver. When I import my flash swf file into dreamweaver/save
it and then open in browser to see if my file works it does if you
right click it. How can I make it automatically load when my page
is opened? Do I need to give my flash file an actionscript to tell
it to play when the page is opened? If so what is it and where
should it be on my timeline? Please advise.

swf files will play automatically once they are loaded. this
may be an IE issue - you may need to use AC_runActiveContent or
SWFObject to 'embed' to resolve the problem.

  • Why don't WMV files Act like MPG files?

I use a mid 2012 Mac Pro; run OS X 10.9 Mavericks.  When I was using OS X 10.5.8 Leopard the icons on my WMV files were flipped to show a picture of the video; just like all my MPG files.  Why doesn't Mavericks do that?  And is there a way I can flip the icons on my WMV files to show a picture again?

    How do I convert a file to a QL/QT X v10.3 compatible file?
    1) This depends on the software you have installed on your system. Basically you need to either have one of the purchase Flip4Mac products installed on your system or a conversion app that has built-in codec support and the source file will have to be unprotected. I have Telestream's Flip4Mac Studio (includes basic import and ecport codecs) so I can use QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip, QT X v10.3, the Mavericks Finder level AV Convert software, or the free Flip Player to perform these conversions. If you don't have a paid Flip4Mac codec installed for use with apps that access you system QT codec components configuration, then you could try a free app like HandBreake or on of the commercial converters available for the Mac.
    2) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply open your unencrypted WMV file in the QT X v10.3 player and it will automatically be converted to an H.264/AAC MOV file.
    3) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply select one or more WMV file icons in the Finder that you want to convert and then select the Context Adaptive menu (Control-Click menu) and select the "Servoices > Encode Selected Video Files" option. This option will open a widow allowing you select a few conversion options like "High/Low" quality settings for targerted H.264/AAC display settings or the selection of the Apple ProRes 422/PCM codec best used as an inermediate codec if you plan to edit the converted file in a video editor at a later time.
    4) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply open your unencrypted WMV file in the free Flip Player and export your file(s) to app or device targeted presets.
    5) If you already have the Player Pro (or greater) codec package installed on your system, then you can simply open your unencrypted WMV file in the either QT 7 Pro v7.6.6 player or free MPEG Streamclip app (if installed) for export to device targeted M4V, "Movie to MPEG-4" MP4, or compatible "Movie to QuickTime" MOV files (e.g., H.264/AAC, MJPEG/PCM, etc. compression format files.
    6) If you don't have a WMV support codec package installed on your system, then you can try opening the file in the Free HandBrake app and us it to convert to one of available Apple compatible presets or create a custom preset of your own. (Note: I have only used this with common WMV downloaded files like WMA 9 audio with WMV 8 video in the WMV container.)
    7) If you already have a commercial converter with WMV support built into the application installed on your system then you can use it to perform a conversion of your WMV files.
How do I create an icon manually?
    1) Basically you select a compatible image file of a compatible size and shape and drop it to the "Info" window (Finder "Command-I" shortcut) icon area. I would normally recommend a JPEG image of VGA-like dimensions and in the shape you prefer. For instance, you can export/capture a frame from your movie and convert it to a JPEG image having the same aspect as your video with a 640 pixel width at 72dpi, create a 640x640 JPEG image if you prefer a more "record" album-like icon, create aposter or DVD case-like JPEG image if desired, or anything in betweem. Just be aware that if the images are too large in an incompatible format, they will be rejected when you try to drag 'n drop them to the info window. (I.e., it would be ridiculous to try and use an 8-, 10-, or 12-megapixel image as your icon.)
    2) Where compatible, you can also assign a custom designed metadata "poster-frame" wich I believ is still used by the finder as an icon image. (Don't quote me on this yet as I have not confirmed it yet under Mavericks as it is taking som much time to just run down what is and is not still working video-wise un this new system.)

  • Swf file stays in cache and used in additional visits?

If I have 5 HTML pages, each with the SAME swf embedded in them (..and that swf has a preloader sequence at the start that cycles through a LOADING sequence, before continuing on with the rest of the movie, if all the frames are not loaded yet...), will visiting one of the other pages (after viewing a first one) result in the swf embedded in it to skip the preload sequence (since it would already be loaded in the browser cache), or would it have to load all the frames again, each time you visit one of the pages?

    Darn... Still having issues.
My swf is structured like this:
Frame 1: Blank... Checks if all frames loaded (to detect a revisit).  If so, jump to 'Loaded' label
Frame 2: ('Preloader' label): Display preloader background and percentage display.  Check if all bytes loaded, if so jump to 'Reveal' label
Frame 3: Go to 'Preloader' label
Frame 4 ('Reveal' label): Main content appears in layers below  preloader background, preloader background slides away, revealing them.
Frame 20 ('Loaded' label): Unobstructed main content
Theory here would be that on the first load, the preloader would kick in if needed (showing the load progress), then sliding away to reveal the main content.  If the connection is fast enough, it skips right up to the main content (no preloader screen or transition).  On return visits, since all pages are using the same swf (which should now be stored in the cache), all the frames should register as loaded, and so you just go straight to the unobstructed contect.
A few flaws with that theory...
    1) Since the initial 'frames loaded' check is on the first frame, it would probably never register as having all frames loaded (unless you have a ridiculously fast connection).  Only time it (in theory) would work is on a revisit...
    2) ...which brings me to a newly discovered flaw in my logic.  Even with the swf in cache, it still needs to be 'loaded' (...it's just a lot faster than from the Internet... but nonetheless a non-instant 'load').  So, I would think now that you'd never get the initial 'frames loaded' scan seeing 'all frames loaded'.
    Ugh....
Only solution I can think of is to extend the initial 'blank frame' (frame 1) to a few frames duration, and putting the initial 'frames loaded' check at the end of that, allowing a highspeed connection to fully load the cached swf by the time the inital check is performed..... but that would give you a longer gap before something appears...
So, now I either have the preloader just 'pop' away (without a nice transition out)... or live with the preloader background appearing on entry of the page, and transitioning out.  I could actually live with the traditional 'door opens on arrival, door closes on leaving' routine... if only the main content actually changed in some way (justifying the doors closing).... But, since it's the same swf being used each time, the content is identical.
Just looks like I'll have to accept a compromise of one type or another...

  • Why don't RAW files from iPhoto open in RAW CS5?

I have dragged RAW files into Photoshop from iPhoto and they appear the same as the .jegs.  Also, in the dropdown camera info panel, there is no info other than RAW and the file name:(  I have a Nikon D5000 camera and am using OSX 10.6.6  All updates that could find have been done.  I am not techy savvy so I hope that there is an easy solution.  Thanks.

I thought that it was preferrable to do editing on RAW files rather than TIFF for highest image quality.
Yes, it is preferable to do as much editing on the raw files as you can including global and local tone & color correction in Camera Raw...but there is a limit to the work you can do and sometimes you must go ahead and render the raw file into Photoshop for additional work. Then you'll be needing layers and other functionality that can't be done on a raw file. At that point you'll need to save as a TIFF or PSD. If you work in 16 bit and a large enough color space, the TIFF or PSDs will still be capable of the highest quality...as others have indicated, the Photoshop .raw file format ain't for photography per se.
