Why I cannot output anything? I am using toad

I have the following:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE update_steroid_dates(patid number, visit number)

yr varchar2(30);

date2 varchar2(12);
date3 varchar2(12);
date4 varchar2(12);
BEGIN
select steroid_start_date, steroid_stop_date, steroid_start_date_2, steroid_stop_date_2
into date1, date2, date3, date4 from treatments where patientid = patid and
visitnumber = visit;
dbms_output.put_line(date1);
END;

Click on the DBMS_OUTPUT tab of your Toad editor window. The bottom pane of that window will be where the output is seen. In the upper left corner of that pane there is a little colored dot. It's red by default, which means you see no output. Click on the red dot to toggle it. It should now be a green dot which means you'll see your output.
Note: From time to time it gets confused or something so you may have to toggle it off and back on before seeing output.
