Why is Captured Footage Dark?

I'm transferring an old home-movie DVD I had created via a Canopus ADVC110 video adapter; as suc, the image quality is noticably darker than what's on the DVD. Conversely, any footage captured from my DV camera is fine.
Is there an explanation for this and what might the fix be?

Are you certain that you're viewing the captured footage on a calibrated monitor (preferably an external TV monitor)?

  • Why wont my footage log and capture?

Why wont my footage log and Capture?
I have my Canon XH A1 connected to my Mac OS X computer. I am using Final Cut Pro to download the footage onto my Mac. The capture settings are set to HDV capture but it wont download properly.
The computer downloads the first 20 seconds of footage then stops. The tape in the camera continues to roll to the end and then gives me the 'End of tape' window- but nothing has been downloading past the initial 20 seconds.
Usually when HD footage is downloaded Final Cut creates many little clips. (Unlike normal DV which creates one big file). For some reason this isn't happening after the first 20 seconds.
Then, even though I have already created a named folder for the footage to be saved into, the computer asks me to save it as an untitled project somewhere else.
    What is going on?
My download settings for HDV log and capture are:
    Sequence Present: Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 50i 48 kHz
    Capture Present: HDV
Device Control Present: HDV FireWire Basic
Playback Output Video: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Main
    Playback Output Audio: Default
Edit to Tape/PTV Output Video: HDV (1440x1080) 50i
Edit to Tape/PTV Output Audio: Default
    Help!

Do you have an external firewire drive connected? Canon equipment is unreliable capturing via firewire to a firewire drive, or even when capturing to a non-firewire drive when there are other devices present on the firewire bus.

  • Capturing footage to FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVRZ1U HD Camera

I'm doing an HD project using a Sony HVRZ1U camera. I'm capturing footage from a Sony HDV GV-HD700 deck. I get nothing in the viewer when I go to log and capture and I cannot capture anything when I press capture because there is no video signal. I can see video on the viewer for the deck. When I change the settings on the deck from AV-DV out, I can see a stretched version in DV quality when I change the settings. I just cannot see a HDV signal to my computer. What are the correct settings for capturing this format? I've tried all the various possibilities and haven't been successful. The deck is connected to the computer via firewire to the HDV/DV iLink cable. Is this deck compatible with FCP? Is the video too much info for the computer?

When setting any Sony HDV device to output HDV you should disconnect the ilink/wirefire cable first, in the menu find Rec In/Out and set the ilink Conv to OFF for HDV. Then connect to the computer when both computer and deck are turned off.
If you have 6.0.1 then why not updated to the latest version, if you do update you will also need to update Quicktime.

  • Capturing footage from Canon XH A1

    Hi All -
I'm a bit new to Final Cut Express but ran across the following problem:
When I try to capture footage from my Canon XH A1 HD video camera, FCE does not recognize that there's any connection or that the camera is plugged into my MacBook Pro via the firewire cable. When I plug in my Sony VX2100 it does recognize this camera and I'm able to capture footage when I use that camera, but no luck with the Canon.
Funny thing is, when I try to capture footage from my Canon using iMovie it recognizes the camera and captures the footage with no problem.
Any idea why FCE is not recognizing this camera when iMovie does? Is there a setting on FCE that needs to be changed?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!

Are you using the correct Easy Setup?
Normally it should be HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 (or i60 if you are using NTSC).
I believe your Canon is an HDV camera whilst your Sony shoots DV.
They both need different Easy Setups. iMovie deals with this automatically.

  • Capturing footage and audio is off sync?

I'm capturing footage and then play it back on the timeline. I notice that the audio is off sync, why is that? I use Sony DVCAM Deck to capture without altering the setting, in Final Cut Pro 6, and the audio became off sync. Any solution?
    Thank you
    Luis

Is it consistently off-sync? Like is it always 2 frames off? Or does it trail off, like it starts in sync and then it drifts out of sync after several seconds? I recently captured a bunch of stuff that was recorded with a DVX100 and the audio was 2 frames ahead of the video (sometimes it seemed like it was only 1 frame off, but 99% of the time it was 2).
Then another problem that crept up was when it got to the end of a tape, which would confuse Final Cut. It would stop, and then make the last clip captured play at 29.97 when it should have been 23.98, though the audio would play back normally. So it would appear to be in sync for a moment and then it would get way out of sync very quickly. What I had to do then was just babysit the capture of the last scene on the tape and stop it before it got to the end.

  • Captured footage not accessable in FCPro but is in Quicktime

This has happened twice now so I know its not just a fluke. A captured video was unplayable - unaccessible even - inside of FCPro 7. It acts like its 1 frame long rather than 27 minutes.
But when I checked the file in scratch disk / captured / proj and it opened in Quicktime and played just fine. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Except that when I reimported the raw into FCPro, same result - unplayable.
So I used quicktime to export a copy that I was then able to import into FCPro and worked perfectly. But WHY wasn't the captured footage available ? I will not re-render all my raw footage every time I capture something. That's just crazy talk!

Sorry for leaving that out. Its a Sony DVCAM DSR-390, captured at standard DVCAM 48Khz. Yes, it was captured by Final Cut Pro. I've never had a problem doing this before.

  • HELP!!! Captured footage "garbled"...

I'm in Gr. 12 using premiere to edit a movie project. I've been using premiere for about 6 or 7 years, since my brother introduced me to it. Over that time, I've learned the ins and outs really well. With such little time left to edit, I'm reluctanct to try to learn another editor. Every time I have a new video project, there seems to be a new Premiere out so I just get the new trial. Did this with CS4. Here's my problem:
I have a new camera; a Sony HandyCam HDR-HC3. I understand Adobe doesn't let you capture HDV, unless you pay for the whole thing (which I think is a real shame for poor ameteur editors like me). When I capture the footage in the standard SD, the picture acts all weird and becomes like deinterlaced or something. Audio is fine. I find a work-around about six months ago with CS3 but I don't remember it... . Video plays fine in VLC player. Anyone work-arounds?
Adobe capture the footage as .avi s.'
Update: This is driving me nuts. The videos play in FLV, WMP, and QT. Even adobe media player. WTH is going on?
Update 2: I tried capturing footage from a normal DV tape with this camera and the same damn thing happened. So it wasn't because I just shot it with an HDV tape.
Update 3: Windows FREAKING Movie Maker plays the captured footage fine.
Update 4: I've added an image of Gspot and of the garbled thing its doing.

The academic versions are very, very cheap. I wish that I could qualify for these. Sometimes I think of taking classes in an approved college, just to get these, but then I make $ with them (not forbidden, but certainly outside of the spirit), so I do not feel right doing so. Even when I did take classes, I only used my "discount" for books - never the software.
One bit of advice would be to completely low-level re-format your HDD and totally reinstall everything after using a trial, before reinstalling the full-paid version. I also highly recommend buying the full-paid version and installing it on a clean system. Too many trials and your system is likely filled with all sorts of detritus. Not a good thing at all, and it might take weeks of hunting around to remove it all. If you've had more than one trial installed, you are probably working on a machine that is about ready to systemically crash - this could well be a hard-crash, and nothing but a total rebuild will get it going again. Be very careful and do not commit important Projects to it.
Back to the lack of MPEG support in the trial: Your purpose is exactly why Adobe does not pay the licensing fee to MainConcept for the trials. Too many people abuse the trials, and this would cost Adobe $. Then, Jim, Eddie, I, and others would have to pay more for the software. That would make us all poorer for it. I'm not keen on supporting other folk with my work and efforts, regardless of what the tone in the US might be right now.
To put it bluntly, you're walking on egg shells here, as we all pay full-fare for our software.

  • Captured footage is outside tv safe area

When I capture footage from my player into Final Cut the picture always ends up being outside the tv safe area. Anyone know why?
    Thanks

What you are seeing is the full image recorded by your camera. However not all TV sets are able to view the full recorded image. Nor will the viewable area be exactly the same on all sets.
The "TV Safe" area is there as a guide to enable you to keep all key action inside an area which will be viewable on most TV sets.

  • Captured footage

im capturing footage thats close to 12 gigs in total so i have it capturing in increments of 2 gigs so that i can burn it to discs, and when i remove it from the capture scratch folder and put it somewhere else so i can burn it, the files become unplayable. can anyone shed some light on this? but before i move them, all of the separate files besides the first one, are unplayable as it is. but the one that is playable says its only 1.91 gigs. once its done capturing it says its locating media, but it seems to take forever so i just quit out of it, i dont know if thats part of the problem or not.

it is a fat32 drive, which is why i set for 2gigs. its just odd because the files are all wacked. for example, i capture about an hours worth of footage, with a 2gig setting i get about 5-6 files. the first file is the one that plays the whole sequence, but the other 4 or so, dont. it says they are unplayable. and the one that does play is only 2 gigs big, so im just really confused as to what is going on. i think it has to do with when its finishing capturing, it says its locating time code or something, i forgot what it was, and i usually just skip past it. do you think that could be it? it usually seems like it says locating time code for so long that i just dont bother, but maybe i just have to let it sit for a while. what do you think?

  • E72 photos captured are dark

i recently bought an e72 model and i noticed that the pictures i captured are dark, it looks pale,,
I even compare it to nokia 6700 classic (5mp also) and it has a big difference. Pictures captured by 6700 is very much better than e72..
why? does it have to do with the settings? how? pls help... tnx

Most cellphone camera has little opening so in order to take full advantage of it you need to use it mainly in outdoor environment where the light is abundant. The worst quality you will get is by taking pictures indoors with little or lack of light(it depends on the light coming into the camera lense instead the whole ambient light). If you want to compare try taking an outdoor shot with plenty of light.
And the bigger the opening, the better the camera will be at taking pictures with less than ideal lighting.
Heck even some pretty hardcore photographer camera(non cellphone) will give you less than good quality when the light is lacking.
The secret is none can match the quality of pictures or scenes that our eyes and brain captures in pretty much real time lol. Pretty much thesame with voice recorder that unable to 100% record the authencity of people's signature voice. If you played back a voice recording what you hear is an approximation of the original voice that is different from the original voice since it was processed electronically and the signal gets changed. And that happens in wireless communication too.

  • Unable to Capture Footage, File Error: Unknown file

Alright, I've been at it for hours trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I have been able to capture footage before but not with this version.
-I have already repaired disk permissions twice, ran disk warrior also.

  • Exported QT file: DV captured footage at DV resolution w/ titles in HDV?

Given that DV and HDV clips may exist in the same sequence in Final Cut Express 4, then when working exclusively with DV captured footage, is there a way to get clips containing only titles to display with HDV resolution in an exported QuickTime file (while the captured footage gets displayed with DV resolution)? Set the sequence to HDV format, even though all of the captured footage is in DV format?

    Thanks for your response, Tom.
Just to be absolutely clear, would it be possible to create a DVD that consisted of a mixture of DV-resolution frames and HDV-resolution frames, all intercut, such that there would be, say, 60 frames at DV-resolution for approximately 2 seconds (assuming 29.97 frames per second), followed immediately by 90 frames at HDV-resolution for approximately 3 seconds, etc.?
What about exporting each DV portion of a Final Cut Express 4 sequence as a separate QT file at DV resolution, and exporting each HDV portion of a Final Cut Express 4 sequence as a separate QT file at HDV resolution, then concatenating the files to create a single QT file, then using the latter with iDVD or some other DVD-authoring software to make a DVD?  Would you not end up with the kind of DVD that I described in the first paragraph of this posting?
    Thanks.

  • Capturing footage without timecodes

I love editing with Final Cut Express, but capturing footage is a nightmare. The program keeps trying to locate timecode breaks on my Hi8 tape during capture, which results in me losing three to four seconds of footage from the beginning of each scene.
Is there a way to tell FCE to disregard timecodes? When I capture family movies, I'd like the importing to be as seamless as possible -- much like when capturing in iMovie. (I do know that I can capture in iMovie and edit in FCE, but if it's possible, I'd like to do all my work in FCE without relying on iMovie.)
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Thank you both very much for your quick replies! I tried switching my Easy Setup as suggested, and now my capturing seems to be working smoothly. Awesome!
Thanks so much again -- I really appreciate it!

  • FCE not capturing footage

I am using FCE 3.5.1 on a G5 Dual Processor using OX 10.4.10. I can not capture video to FCE from my two Sony DV cameras. FX1 and TRV 22. This just started after years of no problems. I have pulled preferences and reinstalled FCE several times. But the problem continues.
I can operate the camera, but it acts as though there is no time code on the tape. The time code on the tape is fine as I have captured this footage on other systems.

    G'Day Mate
Thanks for the reply. I have tried the Quicktime Receipts removal, but did not solve the problem. Only had one Quicktime pkg listed. It did have numbers. While I was there I pulled the FCE HS pkgs as well with numbers.
FCE HD does recogizine the cameras and will control it from Capture, but does not capture footage correctly. With clips it pays no attention to cues in and out. In "now" it will freeze the picture while continuing to record the sound.

  • FCE: Capturing footage from my Canon XL1

Got FCE and when capturing footage from my Canon XL1 I get the video however there is no audio!
Tried capturing footage via iMovies and works no problem!
Not sure if this has anything to do with it but I'm using a external mic. on my XL1 into one ch. on the audio inputs. Also scratch disks is on a external 1TB WD drive. Finally tried virtually all the set-ups on the 'easy set-up' but still no joy.
Can anyone throw me a life line on this one?!

sorry I should have made myself abit clearer.....when the tape is played back in my XL1 I can hear audio when my headphones are pluged into the camera also the camera has audio monitors which I can see movement verifying there is audio. However in FCE I don't see any audio level movement.
In terms of equip. I just have a external WD 1TB drive (USB), firewire cable for video camera and the USB cable for the keyboard & mouse.
Additional application: Flip video s/w (however had fce issue prior to installing this).
