Why is my hard drive running out of space?

I have noticed lately that I've been losing hard drive space quite rapidly. I had downloaded a Windows VMWare box from Modern.ie and set up in Parallels for IE testing, and once that was finished I deleted the original 6 GB file. I had checked the space before and after I deleted it, I actually lost hard drive space.
This has happened multiple times, and I read it might be a paging issue so I should reboot. Did that, still lost hard drive space.
Any ideas?

Ah, so I ran that and came back with the following. The two bolded items were part of my VM machines.

I'm guessing that I should be okay when it repairs these?

  • Why does my Hard Drive run out of Space?

So, my Mac's HDD keeps running out of space. Here's the Specs
    OS X Lion (10.7.5)
2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB Memory (2x 4GB PC3-8500)
    60GB HDD
Okay, so i know its a 60GB HDD, but this thing is used for only internet surfing and General OS functions. 28GB of the 60GB is used via installed OS X, Apps, and Music. 32GB is available on start-up, but the HDD hit 0MB available after a while and the Mac's Virtual Memory caps out and I must force quit an application to continue, but Google Chrome is the only App open other than finder.
I am Computer Savy, but UNIX systems aren't my strong points. I don't know why this OS needs 32GB of VM nor why it doesn't pre-allocate it like Windows does. Is there away to Pre-Allocate Pagefile and restrict it to 12GB? I hate having to restart my computer in the middle of a task just to use it. Thank You in Advance.

  • How do you move or can I move Itune folders (Movies), (TV Shows) and (Home Videos) to other internal hard drives (running out of space) on my computer's main hard drive and have Itunes recongize where they are?

I built my own computer which has 4 internal hard drives with 3 internal hard drives that are 3tb.  With my movies and tv shows, I need to know if I can move the Itunes folders (Movies, TV shows and Home Video's) and move each one of them to 3 seperate internal hard drives while Itunes can still find them to play with my apple tv.  Does anyone know how I can do it?

While you can do that, it is not a feature of iTunes.  Put your movies on the external drive, then add them to iTunes by dragging the files to iTunes while holding the option (alt) key down so it leaves the files where they are located.  There are other ways to move them if they are already added but they can be more involved and tricky.  If it's just one or two try:  http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected

  • Why is my hard drive running all the time in Mountain Lion

My hard drive is powering up far more than it ever did with Lion, and this of course is killing battery power rapidly. Any one know why my hard drive runs so often on the new OS?
    Thanks!

Great. Thanks. What I mean is my hard drive actually revs up and makes noise far more often than it ever did on Lion. It is actively engaged in a higher usage than ever before and this of course makes the battery quickly expire.
Would anyone else like to offer advice? Thanks!

  • Why does my hard drive run all day long when not in use

my hard drive does not sleep  it continues to spin all day long

As dwb stated, if the drive is FW then it will not sleep with Mavericks unless it has its own power chip.  I had to switch to USB for it to work.

  • When I delete many movies, why is my hard drive not showing more space?

I have deleted many many movies, but my hard drive does not register any more space available. I delete my movies from Vuze, using the "delete from computer" button. Shouldn't that trash all copies? I am thinking there must be another copy somewhere for my available space to not change.
I would appreciate any help on this.
    thank you all,
    Sandy

Hi. Have you emptied the trash? Bottom right side of the dock.

This is a little list I have also put together for our 2003 servers, should work fine for XP.
O   C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download   Not confirmed, but suspect is ok.  (i have done this)
O   C:\Windows\Ie7updates  Not confirmed, but suspect is ok. (i have done this)

O    Attempt to move the page file
O    Run the disk clean up utility, and compress old files, and empty the recycle bins
O    The temp directories in the user profiles can be cleaned out, also check the desktops for downloaded apps for their setup file
These should be safe to remove, but probably a good idea to leave them alone as the updates may need them, be careful here.

There is no option to do this automatically, this must be scripted
{}   If no drivers will be needed again, c:\windows\inf holds all the drivers for new hardware.  This has not been tested
{}   c:\windows\downloaded installations\  This folder holds the installers for some programs you download and install, for example, Tweak UI puts its installer in this folder, and so you can repair it or update its components later. Deleting this folder won’t harm any programs I have ever seen, but you should look inside this and see what you are deleting first.

X   C:\windows\installer  can NOT be removed, although duplicate files ca be removed.  this is used for uninstalls and installs of new apps
X   C:\windows\assembly  can NOT be removed, this is a .NET folder, do not play with or compress
X   $hf_mig$  can NOT be removed, although it can be compressed.  this directory tells future updates what has already been doneblankmonkey

  • C drive running out of space

Hi, I'm new to ipod, not quite so new to computers & windows. But 57 yrs now so not bought up on them. Problem that my computer is about 4yrs old now & its C drive is nearly full, capacity 17gb but only 1% available, 338mb. Have got 5.15gb of music on ipod but seem to be stuck now for space to continue adding more music. Sorry to be dumb about this, but a relative has added a D Drive which has over 16gb of space. He said it would make my computer work better ? But he's over East & so cant help now.Can I somehow get all my ipod stuff to work on the D drive instead of the full C ??? And if so, HOW ???? I really cant afford a new laptop with larger HD so I hope there's a way to sort this out ??
    Thanks for your patience !

My hard drives run at 55 mbs according to Blackmagic Disk Speed Test.  It takes about 14 hours to back up 325 gbs.  I feel like they should be running faster.  The 2 External hard disks (one a brand new WD 2TB My Book and the other a 3 year old 1 TB Li cie) are connected directly to Mac using firewire 400 and 800 respectively.  Yes, my iMac has one 400 and one 880 firewire port.  Damned if I know which is which since they both indicate the same speed.  I use Onyx, Mackeeper, Disk Warrior and Disk Utility to keep my Mac in good order.  All Disks are healthy according to this software.  No disk has more than 33% capacity use. Is this all I should expect?  Or should I be getting better performance?  Nothing else funky is happening.  Everything else is working fine without bugs.
    What else could it be?

Get rid of MacKeeper. There are many threads on this form about that piece of junk. Look in "More Like This" or search MacKeeper

Remove iAntiVirus, then reboot, see if it's better.

  • Why is my hard drive full when I only have the operating system loaded and nothing else?  No pics, music, nothing...It's the 60 Gig hard drive on the air built in late 2010.

Why is my hard drive full when I'm only running the operating system and nothing else is loaded?  No music, pics, nothing! I understand the hard drive is small at 60 gig, but I can't believe the os would take up that much space.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Solid State Drive -- running out, low on space

I was running out of space on my almost brand new computer. SSD on C: and std drive on E:
Toshiba support suggested a reformat. What I did instead: http://www.opencircuits.com/Solid_State_Drive_Issues
    Hope this may help others.

Why would you reformat the drive? Also, DO NOT move My Documents, that is a Windows generated folder and you might mess up the computer and have to reload everything if you do.
    If you are running out of space there are a number of things to do;
    1. Open Computer (or My Computer in XP) and right click the C drive and select Properties. There should be a button to cleanup the drive. Click in and then select all the check boxes on the next window that pops up and Ok. This will delete all the temp files off that drive. If you are on IE alot that can generate a bunch.
    2. Move the OS swap file (paging file) off the C drive to the D drive. It normally is set as 1.5 times the amount of ram in your machine. It is a bit deep to do so I won't type in the entire procedure. Google it.
    3. This is more of a pain but remove the programs on the computer (Office, Norton, Adobe, etc.) and reload then but when going though the install process enter in D:\Apps (for example, as you made need to create that folder first) as the destination instead of C:\Program Files.
This is one of the disadvantages of SSD's not, the big size ones are very expensive.

Why is my hard drive full of backups?
Okay, my computer was running low on storage space, so I decided to clean it up. Now, my storage tab in "about this mac" looks like this:
What happened? Is there a secret folder somewhere where I can delete all these backups? I have a 2009 macbook pro that has seen better days, and I am currently running on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1. My computer doesn't run well after it has less than 100gb of free space left. Can someone please help? I would get another mac, but I don't have the money. Thanks to anyone who can help!
