Why is my iPhone not recognized on my USB port?

When I try to connect my iPhone 3G to my computer absolutley NOTHING happens. No error message no beeping from windows that it detects a connection, and I definitely cannot see it in my iTunes. I have tried restarting the phone, resetting the phone, restarting the computer, restarting the computer with my phone connected, reinstalling iTunes/Quicktime, plugging the cord into different ports on my computer (not my keyboard) and still nothing. I have an external drive with a USB port connection that is recognized when I plug it in the same USB ports. One would think it was the USB cord but the strange thing is I can use the same USB cord plugged into my phone and the adapter in the wall and it charges. I just can't update the software or add songs to my iPhone.
Anybody know what's going on?

Ok so I tried creating a new user account with administrative priviledges on the same computer and still nothing. I called apple tech support and spent about an hour on the phone with them and they are baffled as to why this is happening too. Their only suggestion was to replace the phone. So unless someone else has had this same problem and knows hows to fix it, or just knows of something that apple doesn't, I'm screwed!
Just out of curiosity, I tried connecting my phone to another computer to get the 2.2 update and it worked. So I updated my phone's software and tried plugging it in again and still nothing. Also, I tried connecting someone elses iPhone 3G to my computer with the same USB cord and my computer recognized their phone. So it must just be my phone and my computer don't like each other for some reason!
Here's the full scenario before the connection issue (just in case someone knows something I don't):
I was having problems updating my iTunes to version 8.0.2. It wouldn't fully install quicktime and without quicktime you can't run iTunes, in fact, iTunes won't even open. I got an error message that said I needed to repair or reinstall quicktime. So I completely deleted iTunes and quicktime software from my computer and reinstalled the version that is downloadable from apple's website (which is NOT 8.0.2). I got it loaded and alas iTunes finally opened. So I connected my phone and started updating to the 2.2 version of iPhone software. Then a window popped up saying I needed iTunes version 8.0.2. So I started that download as well. Then I walked away to let it download the updates needed for my phone and iTunes. I came back 20 min later and my computer had restarted itself (I'm assuming after the iTunes update it did that) and was at the login screen. So I logged in and my iPhone would then not connect to my computer after that. I unplugged and plugged it back in and I got a beeping noise but not the normal beeping noise a computer makes when you connect the USB cable. It beeped three times in the same lower tone instead of the 2 beep 2 tone you normally get. I realize in hind site that was probably not a good idea but I asked the apple tech I talked to and he said that shouldn't have been a problem even if the 2.2 iPhone update hadn't fully installed and had been interrupted. So there's my full story! Thanks for helping me out!!

  • 9300 not recognized at the USB port

    Hi all,
    please look at this issue..
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Curve/curve-9300-3G-not-recognized-at-USB-Port/td-...
    Thx

My iphone 4, when plugged into my windows xp laptop, wasn't recognised. "USB Device Not Recognised". I was obviously concerned I had just bought a broken iPhone 4...
However, I used a different Apple USB cable and it worked first time on the same windows xp laptop and in the same USB port. The cables look different, the first one had a rounded USB head cover, maybe it was a iPod one (I did buy the phone from eBay). The second, and working cable, has a square USB head cover. I don't know if that is important or not but hopefully the same solution will work for you.
If not, there is a video here that suggests an alternative solution.

  • HT201269 Why is my iPhone not recognized in iTunes

I have uninstalled and reinstalled, etc.  There is a driver error noted but when I choose troubleshoot it gives me no options to fix it.  Very frustrated and looking for any help.  I just bought an Iphone 5S and neither the 4 or 5s are recognized in ITunes.

You verified and restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service?
You verified the Apple Mobile USB Driver?
And you checked for third party software conflicts?

  • Why is my iPhone not recognized  and why doesn't it charge?

My iPhine will not charge. I have tried another working iPhone cord and wall unit and it doesn't work as well. Also my iPhone does not show on iTunes when plugged into the MacBook Pro with either cord. I am also getting a message that "the accessory being used is not compatible" when the phone is not using any accessory.
I think it is a unit problem. I have tried the restore, reset procedure, but don't want to lose recent pictures, so I haven't done the final restore procedure. Help?

    sevencycleman,
The message you are getting about "This accessory..." and the fact that a known good cord didn't work indicates there is probably something wrong with the dock connector on the iPhone.
I would recommend taking it into the Genius Bar at an Apple Retail Store if there is one near you, or calling AppleCare.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Iphone not recognizing i'm logged in with same acct.

I am trying to use my macbook to make calls.  Macbook air is on Yosemite, iphone 5 is on 8.1.  The problem is that when i go into settings-facetime, and try to turn on iphone cellular calls, I get the message "cannot turn on iphone cellular calls - Facetime and icloud must be signed in to the same apple ID to use iphone cellular calls."  I have logged out of and back into both facetime and icloud, done a hard reset on the phone, and still cannot get iphone cellular calls to turn on. Why is my phone not recognizing that I'm signed into both areas with the same account?  Thanks.

I did multiple times, I'm logged on my iPhone and iPod and sometimes when I get a text the notification disappears as if someone read the text and when I point it out when I tell my friend about it then it stops. One time I didn't say anything to see if it would keep happening and it did and when I called it out again the notifications were normal again all of a sudden.

  • HT1414 iphone not recognized in windows or itunes

iphone not recognized in windows or itunes

My iPhone 5 was not being recognized by two different computers, windows 7 and windows 8.1.  My wife's iphone 5 had no issues.  I followed all the advice on-line from re-installing iTunes, resetting my phone ( as new and backed up from cloud), device manager troubleshooting, re-install drivers, different cables, different ports.  Oddly enough in the fianl analysis my iPhone only gets recognized when the cable is insert in one way into the phone.  Flip the cable and it goes straight to "unknown device".  Doesn't matter which cable I use, it only works on one side.  My wife's works both ways.  I can't explain it, but there it is.  I put a dot with a permanent marker on the cable to identify which side goes up.

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes any more

    iTunes 9.0.2 on a 2006 iMac 2GHz intel duo running OSX 10.5.8
    iPhone 3Gs 32 gig
    iPod (5th gen)
3 external hard drives, all the iTunes library stored on a Mybook 1 TB Firewire drive plugged into iMac direct, not via a Firewire hub.
I plugged my iPhone into the Mac this am, tried to sync the iPhone and got an error message saying that something was wrong with my iTunes.
    Mac then froze.
Finally got the Mac back up after five attempts (eventually, had to unplug everything, including the mains to the iMac, plug in just the power, keyboard and mouse, press and hold power switch for 5 secs then plug in each extra drive when the Mac came back up).
Found something seriously wrong with iTunes as it wouldn't open when clicked on (Force Quit reported app frozen).
Deleted iTunes using AppZap then downloaded iTunes from Apple website.
iTunes now back up on iMac but can't find any of the music files (even when I carefully repoint the iTunes to the correct location for the iTunes library by iTunes/Preferences/Advanced then Change iTunes Media Folder Location). Each entry in the iTunes library now has a black exclamation mark against it,
Also, iTunes doesn't see my iPhone when I plug it in.
Also, when I plug in my iPod, get the error message "The iPod is synced with anotehr iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
    HELP!
By the way, I have TIME MACHINE running to a separate and dedicated HD. Can I not just "roll back" my iMac in the same way I could do with a PC, say selecting the iMac when it was last working fine (yesterday evening)??
Keeping fingers crossed and hoping for an answer....
    Chris

Rather than create another "iPhone not recognized by iTunes" thread, I'll add to this one. I have an iPhone 3G 8GB.
After going through those steps you listed, my Windows XP installation always reverts back to the old Windows Apple iPhone drivers which only sees it as a camera. I've had it set to only pull from the iTunes drivers by specifying "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" in the Hardware Update Wizard. Windows still doesn't like the iTunes drivers stating "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware". This location is the same as you noted: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers" which contains:
    usbaapl.cat
    usbaapl.inf
    usbaapl.sys
    All dated 7/22/2008.
My current drivers for the iPhone in my setup are still the MS drivers, version 5.1.2600.0.
    usbscan.sys
    ptpusb.dll
    ptpusd.dll
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • IPhone not recognized by iTunes after update

I recently downloaded & installed the latest update for iTunes and it actually removed iTunes and put and extra (& useless) shortcut for quicktime in my desktop. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled iTunes and quicktime with nor problem. I hooked up the iPhone and downlaoded the latest update for it as well and it crashed during the installation of it. I have since had to reboot on my roomates pc and it will not be come up in iTunes. My computer still recognizes it though. I have gone through all the steps in apples site and microsoft and have no clue what to do now. I use this thing all day every day and need the music and video capablities for "work" purposes. If anyone can help, thanks.

    Symptoms:
iPhone not recognized by iTunes on Windows computer, however an iPod will.
The iPhone CAMERA appears in windows My Computer - but nowhere else.
    Problem:
The Apple iPhone Driver has been replaced by a Microsoft Driver which enables the camera/storage, but did not allow it to connect with iTunes.
    SOLUTION:
From Device Manager, Select the iPhone (under imaging/Portable Devices) and then select "Update Driver", Don't direct it to automatically search for a driver, instead, manually point it to search in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers - It should then "do it's thing" and install the correct apple driver - voila - iPhone is then recognized.
