Why is my iphoto continues to require me to repair the library?

Not only that, but has deleted all my archive for the second time!

Terence Devlin wrote:
Where is your Library?
Now the Library is on iPhoto Library\Thumbnails\... (i don't know where it was before, i think in the same place)
What does "deleted all my archive" mean?
It means that the photos there aren't on iPhoto.
I always import photos directly with the cable from my iPhone, the divide by
events, year and month.
The events were, but there are no photos inside, The thumbnails are gray.
The faces are all gone, places too.

What Operating System are you running?
Mountain Lion there seem to be a glitch that continually ask this on quit.

  • Repairing the library every time iPhoto launches. Why??

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and updated iPhoto. Everytime I start iPhoto it says that it needs to "Upgrade" the library to the latest version. Then it says that the library has to be repaired and I go through this process, the library opens up and works just fine. When I close the library, the whole process starts again, the system repairs the library, library opens, close the software down and restart, rebuild .... etc.
I tried Command/Option -> launch iPhoto to rebuild the entire library database. But I still have the same issue. I can use it but, once I close it down and relaunch I have to rebuild the library.
Has anyone at Apple or anyplace else seen this? iPhoto worked fine before I upgraded to Mavericks. Is there another program I can use instead of iPhoto until this gets resolved??

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks delete the contents the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto, reset its preferences and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Perhaps you need to wait for the download to finish. If it's going on for a long time then cancel it (which you can do in Launchpad) and try again.

What upgrade did you apply?  As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • Continue to copy music in to the library but leave mov/TV where they are?

Is is at all possible to continue to copy music in to the library but leave movies/TV shows where they are? I have a HDD for music and 3 for movies. Now I am starting to use them with my TV and therefor need them to be in iTunes. But I want them left where they are. I do however, wish to continue copying to and organizing my music folder.
    Help Please?

  • Iphoto 2.0.1 fails to organise the library right

Any photos imported from another computer (in this case a PC) are organised in the iphoto library by the data MODIFIED rather than the date taken, even though in iphoto, looking at the properties of each photo, it has the correct date under the images original date.
after getting really annoyed by this, i just cant help wondering why i cant just organise my photos inthe library the way i want to, as i can with itunes?

^ Eh? What has this got to do with anything? Am I not explaining this right? Of course in the Finder, within a folder, files/tracks are arranged alphabetically. And yeah, there's no alternative. It would be nice if Apple allowed you to list files in the finder by other attributes (timestamps, ID3 tag data, etc) as in other operating systems, but that's another story.
What I said was you could organise the hierarchy of folders anyway you like, and even keep all your music files out of the library altogether and somewhere else. So instead of the default option in itunes, where it puts tracks inside a folder with the album name, and that folder inside a folder with the artist's name, you can organise them into folders by genre, style, BPMs, whatever you like.
"iTunes allows more viewing options because music files have more "meta-data" than photo files, but the different viewing options don't change the file organization in the folders that contain the original files."
For the third time, I'm not concerned about the viewing options within the application. I'm interested in the way iphoto organises the HIERARCHY of folders within its library.
It SHOULD be organising them by the date and time they were taken, but instead, for a large number of photos which were copied of another computer, it organises them by the date modified, which is the date they were copied over. So I have huge folder within the library on the 8th of october, within the 2005 folder, containing many months of photos.

  • My iPhoto won't open it says that the library is locked

I cannot access the photo library and all my iphone pictures are stored there and lots of pictures from my work that i dont have anywhere else

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

  • How does iPhoto back up using time machine if the library is on and external drive

I'm looking to store my iPhoto library on an external Lacie media drive so I have a central point for images. I intend to do the same with my iTines library although I understand there will be less availabitlity for the music.
    My question is.
If the library is stored externally does that mean that Time Machine will not back these files up and will I have to have to have a 3rd party software to back the Lacie media drive up for safety?

Yes - unless you exclude it - check the TM preferenced to see what is being excluded
and what format is the Lacie media drive? the iPhoto library MUST always be on a drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)

I love my macbook pro but still not fully understanding Iphoto.  When I create a new photo album and drag photos over from a disk it seems to add all photos from my library. When I remove them it removes them from all the albums.  HELP!

Add the photos from your disc to iPhoto, then drag them from the iPhoto Event or photos to the Album.
You can delete photos from the Album without removing them from the computer.  If you delete them in the Photos or Events area, they are removed from iPhoto, therefore taking them out of the Album.
The photos have to be in iPhoto to exist in an Album.  They cannot exist in an Album and not be in iPhoto..
    Hope that helps...
