Why no backup if Mag Safe is unplugged

I did a search on this but didn't come up with much. I understand that TM won't auto backup when the Mag Safe is unplugged - but why? I have a portable FW HD that doesn't need AC power and it would be nice if it would auto backup all the time. What difference does the Mag Safe make? Am I correct that TM will backup if I manually choose to backup without the Mag Safe plugged in? Thanks.

It's for the same reason that you can't do an OSX install on a laptop without being plugged into mains - the risk of the battery dying during a data-critical process is too great, and they're simply forcing you to follow good practice. You could hose your system in the former case, or hose your backup in the latter.

if mag safe is plugged into wall, but unplugged from laptop, does it still draw power?

My Kill-A-Watt meter indicates that my 85W MagSafe adapter draws about one watt when it's plugged into the wall but not powering anything. The meter doesn't measure fractional watts, so that's probably rounded up from a fraction.
When my 15" MBP is connected to the adapter but asleep, about two watts are drawn -- somewhat less than a small incandescent night-light.

  • Mag Safe power cord sparks when connected or disconnected--whereupon the MacBook Pro 13'' dumps date and time, and all passwords, plus any/all unsaved information.

I purchased my MacBook Pro 13" from the Apple Store in Tucson, AZ, in mid-January. Since then, every time the Mag-Safe cord is jostled, not even disconnected, sparks fly from the power terminal on the computer, the computer shuts down, and dumps its passwords, as well as the date and time.
Any work in progress is also lost.
I work overseas, and Apple's advice was to give them my credit card number, await shipment of a new power supply and cord, and then, when I return the old power supply and cord, i'd receive a credit. That won't work, as packages from the US to my location take weeks if they arrive at all. There is no Apple Store within a reasonable distance. Or, Apple suggests, when I'm home on leave in mid-June, I should bring the computer to the Apple Store for repair--I have only days in which to do that, but I suppose I'll need to try. My concern is that I'll need to return overseas without my computer and won't be able to retrieve it for months, until my next leave.
This issue shows up elsewhere online. Is there a short in the power terminal in the computer, or on the Mag-Safe power cord, or within the computer itself? It's a known issue, thus I wonder why it hasn't been fixed.

  • Any word on Mag Safe saftey issues from apple?

Has there been an official statement or anything like that about the mag safe adapters? Cause it seems like the cases of melted/burned power adapters aren't going away. Just wondering what the "official" word on this issue is. And if there's anything special I should know about using my mag safe....ie. is it safe to leave it plugged into my computer for long periods of time?
    Seth

"Not sure why or how it would happen other than abuse of the cable, not that I'm making an accusation or anything like that."
Ah, but you are making an accusation.
That aside, a simply manufacturing defect could easily cause this problem, much like a short in any cable or wire that runs a current. Frankly, I don't see how this could be ellusive or unbelievable.
I think the original posters concerns are an important one. A cable going is one thing, but your laptop being comprimised is certainly a noteworthy concern.

This didn't work for me, so I did a bit of searching and TONS of pages later in google, I found an answer. Here are the steps for people who also were in my situation:
    1. Take off bottom case
    2. Unplug battery - blurry image here: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/03cC79r5Dx4/0.jpg
    3. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds
    4. Plug a charger in, and it should start booting up
    5. After shutting down again, reconnect the battery and close the case up
    6. It works! (hopefully, if you guys had the same situation I did)

  • MacBook: Repalcing Mag Safe Board

My MacBook began having the issue of when it becomes unpluged during use, it shuts down automatically and wont turn back on unless is is plugged back in and stays pluged in. I recently took my Mid-'09 MacBook to my local Apple Store. They ran diagnostics and replace the Battery Connecter inside my MacBook thinking it would solve my problem; It did not. I took my Mac home, and opened it up. (I had been told earlier that I needed a new logic board, but my Mac would still turn on and work properly.) I thought that there was no way my whole board had to be replaced. So I thought that maybe the Mag Safe board was dead because the battery never charged. I ordered a new board. I am now wondering if this is the correct soluoin to my problem.
    Please Help!
    -Bradley Lokietek
PS: I called Apple; they said that what I told them would be the best solution before the Logic Board Replace.

Never heard of such.  Suggest that you contact Apple.

  • Mag-safe wire dying

I doubt this has anything to do with the Mag-Safe itself, but that is the best way to identify the problem area.
The wire immediately outside of the Mag-Safe connector appears to be dying. This wire hasn't suffered any unusual treatment. The only thing that happens is it being wrapper around the provided "prongs" on the adapter itself.
If I push the wire "into" the magnet (towards the MacBook), sometimes I can get it to work and stay working again. However, it seems to be getting harder and harder, leading me to believe that the wires are breaking down beneath the outer rubber.
    (1) Is anybody else experiencing this?
    (2) Anyone know of a fix?
Any other related experiences/insights are welcome.

well, it is one of those things I have to think over when deciding on whether to get a Macbook Pro to eventually replace my old G4 or get something else. I was thinking to be more compact.
As you said about the frustration aspect, I similarly encountered frustration with the Apple Studio Pro monitor I had with the G4; it started dying after barely 3 years of use and I don't buy computers to die but to last as many years as possible, just like how my old tvs used to last 10 years and more; costs too much. Preferably they'd build their units such that I could add more RAM and the latest operating system every so often and use the same hardware for years but they don't do that; they fix it to where a unit "can't" hold more than a certain amount of RAM to force you to buy another unit after a certain point (although I do hear of Mac fans who continue to run old units for years). The display was eventually able to be repaired by me using a replacement device from a third party company, but Apple didn't help in that regard, evidently expecting everyone would simply replace the expensive display instantly right at 3.5 years or so. I still have the display and it works, but only because of a third party company's aid; without them I probably wouldn't still be buying Apple because of that seemingly deliberate planned obsolescence with that display unit -- I only buy reliable equipment normally - which is why I've been buying Japanese cars (made in america) despite wanting to buy American brands to support our economy. I wish Apple items would hold up a little better.
At least they covered it in the warranty in this instance but I hope I can expect that will last more than 3 years.
Again, I keep buying Apple but this is a concern I have re: life of equipment.

  • Mag safe led changes

the battery on the macbook is charged 100% and 99%. it always changes and when it changes it changes the led on the mag safe from amber to green. it is keep doing that and won't stop even after a restart or a shutdown. it is always changing from 99 to 100 and back to 99 to 100. the led is constantly changing. why is this doing this? is it normal. whats wrong?

Uh-oh, I hope you live close to an Apple Store, you might need to go talk to the guys in the Genius Bar. Sign in at any computer for the concierge thing. If you can't figure out how to do that, talk to a worker who isn't at the Genius Bar first.
If it's like mine was, you'll have to leave it plugged in for a while before it starts happening again. Get the people at the Genius Bar to plug it in for you at the back table in advance, so by the time they call your name, the problem will already be apparent and you won't have to wait for an hour for it to start doing it again. If the people at your Genius Bar are like they were at mine, they'll go ahead and plug it right in for you.
You probably won't need your adapter, they'll want to use their own, but it probably won't make a difference.
Same exact thing happened to me, I went to the Apple Store, they hooked me up with a new battery for free, now it's all good.

  • Replacing "T" Mag Safe Adapter

Typically, I do not participate on these sorts of boards; however, I have had a pretty unfortunate experience today with Apple which I'd like to not only communicate but also seek help. As a preface, the city I live does not have an official Apple Store but only an Authorized Servicer.
As some of you might know already, there was a recent class action lawsuit put against Apple regarding the model "T" Mag Safe Adapter. Rather than going to court, they decided to settle. For those that purchased replacement cords, they were able to be refunded the full or partial amount; for those that did not, but experienced fraying (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4127), they'd be able to receive a new adapter under Apple's Adapter Replacement Program by either going to an Authorized Servicer, an actual Apple Store, or by calling Apple Care.
When I went to the Authorized Servicer, they were of no help, stating that I would have to go to an actual store.
When I called Apple Care they incorrectly told me that the replacement was only good for up to three years since the purchase of the laptop. This was told to me despite the clear statement communicated on the Class Action Lawsuit website, https://www.adaptersettlement.com/.
Under the FAQ it was stated:
"For Adapters shipped with a Subject Computer, you will have three years from the date of purchase of the Subject Computer or May 21, 2012, whichever is later, to claim a replacement adapter. For Adapters purchased separately, you will have three years from the date of purchase of the Adapter or May 21, 2012, whichever is later, to claim a replacement. If you do not claim a replacement adapter within these time periods, you will lose your right to obtain a replacement. Apple will continue the Adapter Replacement Program until December 31, 2012; Apple will have no obligation to honor adapter replacement claims made after December 31, 2012. "
Obviously, May 21, 2012 has not occurred yet and therefore I ought to be able to replace my adapter.
Since I am still a poor college student, I'm not in the type of situation where I can simply drop $72 for a new adapter... Oh, yesterday the adapter completely stopped working due to the fraying...
Today Apple may have lost me as a customer.
If anyone has any suggestions for how I ought to proceed, please let me know.

Call AppleCare, ask to speak to a senior advisor, and give them the name and location of the AASP you went to that told you you had to go to an Apple store.  When you call, be firm, but civil and demand Apple get in contact with that store.  They will then most likely comply and give you a new charger.  If still no resolution, call Apple Customer Relations 1-800-676-2775.  If you can, follow up with the results.  I'd be interested to hear. Good luck.

  • DOES MAG SAFE POWER ADAPTER WORK THE SAME AS A PORTABLE POWER ADAPTER??

My power adapter broke, so I just purchased a Mag Safe power adapter. My computer works when it is plugged in, but it says that there are no batteries available, and it is not charging.
Is there a difference between the two, and what could be the problem?

What exactly do you mean? There is only one AC adapter for the MacBook and it is a Mag Safe adapter, what are you refering to when you say portable adapter?

    Craig.A,

  • Is there lead in the Mag Safe power adapter's cord/cable?

I was just wondering if there is lead in the Mag Safe power adapter's cord/cable specifically, and if there is any in apple's cords/cables in general. I couldn't find anywhere to email apple about it.

I don't have specific information, but the power adapter is certified for use in the EU, and the EU has very strict lead-free requirements. Chances are the printed circuit board inside the power adapter also is manufactured with lead-free solder. Bismuth can be substituted for lead, though the resulting amalgam will have a higher melting point, so is harder to work with and increases assembly costs a little bit. Despite economic incentive to use lead, responsible manufacturing can avoid it.
There are probably much more significant exposure risks in your environment than the cord on your MacBook charger. If your home is over 20 years old and has copper pipes, chances are they were sweated together with lead bearing solder. Also, old faucets often contain lead in their parts.
Even if the cord did contain lead, it isn't likely to ablate into your environment; avoid chewing on the cord, and don't allow children or pets to chew the cord either.

    Hi Aiian,
The kit contains all the plug ends needed to travel around the world. the small flat bladed square piece that slides on the 60 watt mag safe charger for use in north america was lost on vacation. I purchased this kit because it appeared to contain two plug adapters that looked exactly the same, one flat blade and one flat blade with holes at the end. when i tried one of the ends nothing happened (no charge).Wondering if it contaians a resistor inside? Mac offered only to replace it if it was faulty, but
    I lost mine.
