Why only 5 region code changes?

Hi. I recently got a new G5 and tried to play my 1st DVD and got the warning that I must set the region code and will only be able to change it 5 times before its permanently set. Why on earth would Apple ever put a limit on the number of times I can change the region code? This seems extremly inconvienent. I know theres alot of people who have DVDs from different regions and naturally want to be able to view them by changing the region code whenever needed. I read a couple previous threads on this general topic and want to make sure I understand correctly.......is it true that theres no 'fix' for this (other than buying an external drive which is a very expensive workaround for some of us).( I hav'nt set the code at all so far)? I think some DVD players have a "multi-region" setting but I assume this is not an option with the mac?.Thanks.

It's not by Apple's choice. By licensing requirements of the owners of the DVD technology, computer DVD players and computer DVD drives limit you to five region changes before the drive locks to the region of the last DVD you use. Once the drive locks, you cannot play disks from any other region with the Apple DVD Player, and the drive itself may be locked as well.
Try VLC Media Player which reportedly can bypass the region lock. VLC Media Player is very much a work in progress, but it's worth a try. There are also some hacks floating around that can reset the region lock on some drives. You use them at your own risk; in some cases the hacks have permanently disabled the drive and such damage will not be covered under warranty. I'd suggest, though, that you make sure that the last disk you use is from the region you play most often. That way DVD Player will work at least the majority of the time.
Hope this helps.

  • Silent Region Code Changes???

I've got a G4 ibook, bought last November in the US (Region 1). I'm currently in Argentina (Region 4). My buddies here wanted to watch a rented Arg flick. I was worried. There was no indication of region on the back of the DVD. Slotted it in and had no problems whatsoever, using DVD Player 4.0 of OSX10.3.9. Unlike my former Powerbook, this computer didn't ask me to change region code.
So there's two options: the DVD was region 1 and 4 or Universal (but didn't say so anywhere). Or that the computer is allowing me to change regions without hassle, but still using up my 5 chances. I read elsewhere that the computer will eventually "set" in one region. Does anyone know if the ibooks nowadays simply switch codes silently (then surprise at the 4th or 5th change)?
Third option: that my DVD Player 4.0 has decided to be unconcerned with region codes. I doubt that's the case. But some folks have posted the development of code-free capabilities with the downloading of DVD Player Update 4.6.1 for their Tiger OS....
Zap me soon, as I'm think about buying some great Argentina flicks (Un oso rojo, Kamchatka, Los rubios) before I take off this Saturday!

You might try to use a tool like MacTheRipper to check which regions your disk is limited to.
In fact (here in Europe) although saying Region 2 only on the cover many disk are regions 2+4.

  • Region code change on DVD Player ...

    hI
please help ,I have changed the drive region code 5 more times,so now it doesnt plays any dvds, how can i reset it,or what i can do?
    thanks

This is right from the Terms of Use: Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
DVD region coding is a form of DRM, and as such, we can't discuss "working around" it here.

This is due to the internal representation of the date type, try using double instead.
First a link, then a quick explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_754
I might be mistaken (it's been a while, so details are blurry), but the saving of the number is done as follows:
    1. Normalize the number: 732974.9209 -> 0.7329749209 (done in binary format) -> this defines the expontent
    2. Cut of the first 0.1 in binary format, i.e. 0.1000110 would be 000110 -> this is the fraction part
    Now the fraction is saved as expontents of 2, i.e 0.1 binary equals to 2^-1 = 0.5, 0.01 to 2^-2 = 0.25, 0.001 to 2^-3 = 0.125,...
This means it is impossible to encode some numbers like 0.2 (you can only achieve an appoxiation using exponents of 2) or 0.
In your case the precision of the fraction is simply not high enough, so a rounding to the value occurs. Using double will give you a higher precision and solve this problem.

  • Play Region code 2 but Cut Region Free

I purchased my Power book sply to watch DVD movies and also cut DVD's for the movie i make on my handy cam.
while the movie i watch are of region code 2, the movie i am gonna cut will be region code free.
Now, as the limit is set to 5 changes, i am interested in knowing how my PB will behave in case i cut the region code free DVD and then play a movie of region code 2 and cut and play and cut and finish region code change.
    OR,
I can keep on playing region code 2 and the region code will not change if i cut the region code free DVD.
How actually that region code change feature works?
also, can i only watch DVD Dual Layer or can also cut DVD Dual layer? I purchased last week only.
    Thanks and Regards
    Amit

One question, Isn't that region Free is Region 0??
I am planning to rip my DVD which i purchased because recently i lost my 2 most favourate DVD because of faulty dvd player, i think. So what if i rip it, region free as mac the ripper do this. If i cut that DVD and play, will it not affect the region code count?

  • Retrieve code change from DTR

Hi I have the previous version of product running on NW7.0 on which we only do code change required for Support packs (SP).
The new version of product is developed on NW7.10.
We did not update the new version with all the SP fixes.
I can get all the activated DTR activities which show me all the files modified for SPs, but I do not get the code change made in these files from DTR.
If I am able to get the code change for all activites activated in DTR, then I will just have to copy paste the fixes in the new track.
Please suggest me if this is possible and how.

Surely you just change the <bean:define> tag to a <c:set var="desc">
The rest remains the same, though you could rewrite that link as
    <html:link action="/sitehomepage" paramId="site" paramName="map" paramProperty="siteID">
      <bean:write name="map" property="plantID"/>
    </html:link>

  • DVD Regional Codes can only be changed 5 times? Why?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro in the U.S. and brought it to Japan where I currently reside. I have DVD's from the states that I want to watch along with DVD's that can be rented here in Japan. When I inserted a DVD into the drive from Japan with a regional code of 2, I was informed that the regional codes can only be changed 5 times and on the 5th time, that code becomes permanent. What is up with that? And is there any way to switch back and forth between various regions without a limit? I don't understand.

This is to stop people circumventing the region code system by simply changing the region code of their DVD player. In my opinion, this is an "anti-piracy" measure that does more to annoy people than it does to stop piracy.
With all other computer drives, you can actually change them 25 times; after every fifth time though, you have to take it to a dealer to have it reset. Apple don't allow this and limit you to five times. After the fifth time, they will not reset it, and you are stuck with it. I would only change it if I moved somewhere with a different region code.
VLC can function as a multi-region DVD player on some drives, allowing you to play disks from any region, regardless of the region coding of your player. It works on my iMac, so I would imagine that there is a good chance it will function as such on your MacBook Pro.

  • Why won't my region dvd code change it says I have 3 more changes allowed will not let me move to another region numberOSx 10.95 macbook

Tried to change the region code for my dvd , it gives me the option to do it but, won't let me move the number
. Still have 3 changes allowed.

Thank you so much! I was trying to think of a DVD that is only Region 4 because most of the DVD's I tried were Region's 2 and 4. Thankfully bought an Australian TV Series last week. I appreciate your help.

  • Any way i can change the region code after the fifth time?

I wasn't aware about the region code being lock after the fifth time.
Is there any way I can change the region code instantly?

No, the drive is permanently locked to the last code you used. If it's not on the one you would prefer, the only thing you can do it replace the drive.
Almost all drives you can get are region free. I couldn't tell you why Apple continues to use drives that require selecting a region.

  • My DVD Player hangs when trying to change the regional code the first time

    Hello,
I am new to this forum and I couldn't find one for the DVD Player specific so I chose this one. Please direct me to a different one if my eyes were misleading me.
I have a new Macbook. Just over three month now and I attempted to watch a movie with the DVD Player last night the first time. When inserting the DVD, the DVD player comes up with a Screen asking me to change the Regional Code from 6 to 1. I don't understand this in the first place since I purchased my Mac within the US. But anyway, When I unlock it with my password and then click the "Set Regional Code" Button (Regional Code preset to one at this time), it turns blue and then the rainbow wheel for being busy shows up. Unfortunately it never leaves and going to the activity monitor it says (Not responding). That causes bad Windows Memories .
Tried multiple ways, let it run for 10 hours and it never returns to the world. Very frustrating, since this is the first time I tried to use this feature.
Is there any advice on how to set this to Regional Code 1. I only have to set it once, but I think there must be an option.
And yes, I know of VLC, but I still would prefer to use this regular DVD player. I think this should work somehow.
Computer out of the box, nothing other then iWorks and MS Office 2008 installed.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks a lot
    The Dark Lord
    Bernd

Does the account you are using have admin rights? I found this :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
+In Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and later, users with administrative privileges aren't prompted to change the region the very first time a DVD-Video disc of a single region is inserted. Instead, the region of the DVD drive is automatically set to the region of the DVD disc that was inserted. Accounts that don't have administrative privileges must authenticate with an administrator account name and password, because changing the drive's region code requires administrative privileges.+
Sounds like it might be worth a try from an admin account first.

  • Last time you can change he drive region code - could I try to reset this?

Hello everybody this is my dvd driver into my iMac G5
    Model: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845
    Revision: DBN9
    Serial Number:
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
And this is the message that I need to avoid.
This is the last time you can change he drive region code
I'm a music student and I have several instructions DVD in region 1 and 2 but I live in South America and here it's 4.
Have any way to reset this counter to 0 and have 5 more changes or put it the driver in region free mode?
    Thanks in advance
    Gus

    Hi Gustavo,
As someone who has travelled between regions a lot, I feel your pain.
Your only options with the UJ-845 are to get an external DVD drive, based on a drive mechanism that can be made region free, or remove the internal drive and replace it with a Pioneer K05 or K06. Pioneer drives can be made region free, and are compatible with MacOS X.
If you have one of the original G5 iMacs, without an iSight, the upgrade is very easy, and you should still keep any remaining warranty. Instructions are available at http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacg517inchOpticalDrive.pdf ( or http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacg520inchOpticalDrive.pdf )
If you have one with an iSight, it is very difficult and you should get a professional to do it - Have a look at http://www.kodawarisan.com/imacg5_isight/imacg501i.html for how it comes apart.

why we need to change apps pwd using fndcpass only?
can't we change using alter user......?

Note:160337.1 How To Manually Change The APPS, APPLSYS and APPLSYSPUB Passwords in Oracle Applications
This is critical. No support if you use this way to change password. This should be the last option. Recommended is using FNDCPASS.
    =======
After using FNDCPASS to change Apps password, you have to run AutoConfig. AutoConfig will take care of changing/modifying all files and profile options. so you will not need to update any file manually.
    - Stop all application services
    - Use FNDCPASS to change the password
    FNDCPASS apps/pwd 0 Y system/pwd SYSTEM APPLSYS <new_pwd>
    - Run AutoConfig
    - Bounce all application services
