Why won't iMovie recognize my DV camera any longer?

I've been using a Sharp VL-SD20 mini-DV videocamera for several years. Worked fine with iMovie. But I recently upgraded to Leopard (now OS 10.5.5), and now iMovie will no longer recognize/control the same camera. I've cycled the power/replaced batteries/reset the date on the camera, etc. Can't get iMovie to 'control' the camera any longer for shares or uploads. ideas?

My collected ideas.
Test another FW-Cable.
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toogle in iMovie pref: Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
Start GarageBand. Play some notes. Close it and hav a re-try with iMovie.
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape:
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
Using WHAT ? :
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? (Others don't count)
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into
this and have a re-try.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?

There is something going on with Leopard not recognizing the camera. I took my camera and MacBook Pro into the Genius Bar and the lady said that she has seen this issue a couple of times and she has no answers. She basically told me that I cannot use iMovie '08 until Apple figures it out with a software update. This really stinks because I bought the MacBook Pro because of the speed with the intel chip to make movies of the kids. I now have to go back to using my iMac G4 that I bought in 2000. I am going to try to import all of my video onto an external HD and then hook up to my new MacBook Pro to do the editing. I'll let you know if it works. I hope they get this one figured out soon. Not the news that you wanted on Christmas day.

Why won't Imovie let me make a video longer than ten minutes?

This has never been a problem before. I have made many videos on Imovie that are longer than ten minutes. Now all of a sudden it won't let me make a video that is more than ten minutes long. What is going on?
On a somewhat related note: Not only am I having this hassle, but I had to create a whole new apple ID just to ask this question becasue for whatever reason Apple wouldn't accept my credintials ( not even my recovery credentials). Then I had to try to log in five or six times because at first they wouldn't accept my new password, which I later found out was because I also needed to confirm my recovery adress, and then because I had to create a separate Apple Support ID. I don't know about you, but I'm starting to get really sick and tired of having to jump through so many hoops just to accomplish the simplest tasks involving apple features.

Try copying it to your desktop, then importing into iMovie from there.

You have been using an iPhone since 2011 with an iCloud ID that is not yours, how do you explain that?
I saw a message that said your phone was lost and erased, and I was asked to activate my iPhone with my Apple ID.
Since you know it was lost but not by you, you have an iPhone that is not legitimate. Your receipt may get you out of trouble with the police but that doesn't make the iPhone yours.
Activation Lock cannot be bypassed and if the your story is true then you should sort it out with Best.

i have a similar problem except i've a 3GS. i took the phone to the "Genius Bar" and the "Geniuses" there did nothing more than clean out the lint that had accumulated over the past three years.

I've done everything possible with the phone and my router at home (though, as you can tell from reading what i've done, anything related to my router at home is moot because th eissue persists anywhere i go...) all i can think is that it's a OS issue some how. I may try to wipe and install an older OS or jail break it to see what happens.
My bets are on what people have said to me though in passing: this is Apple's way of making people want to move onto the iPhive (name trademarked by me!) due to frustrations with their iPhour or iPhthree (that doesn't work so well does it...).

I can't figure out why iTunes will not recognize over 100 of my songs. I recently purchased a 7th gen iPod to replace the other one which was stolen. Never had a problem with anything before the new iPod was installed, registered etc. Any advice? Thanks

My interpretation of your question is that iTunes has lost its link to 100 of your songs. When tracks in iTunes display a it means the file cannot be located; it may have been moved or deleted. For this issue, we will need to refer to the following article:

Why won't FCE recognize my camera???

I recently switched from a mini-DV tape camcorder to one that records directly to hard disk or card. I did this so that I could use log & transfer capturing. Specifically, the camera is a standard definition Panasonic SDR-H85. In short recording mode, it uses MPEG-2 compression. Those clips have the .mod file extension. In long recording mode it uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 for compression. Those clips have the mp4 file extension. So far I've only recorded to hard disk. But no matter what mode I recorded in, FCE4 does not detect or register my camera. It will also not let me import folders with the media in them to log & transfer because they contain "unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure," even files containing .mod clips converted to .mov. I already did the easy set up changing the format to Apple Intermediate Codec for the AVCHD per Tom Wolfsky's manual. And my version of FCE is the updated 4.0.1. So what is the problem? I can upload this media with other software programs so it's not a connection issue. Someone please help me!

In addition, to save time, does it make sense to only shoot footage in the long play mode since that automatically comes out in mp4 format? That way I can bypass the conversion altogether. The manual says there's no difference in image quality between short play mode and long play mode. Long play mode actually gives you twice the recording time. I don't even know why they have short play mode then unless there are folks who prefer to work with the mpeg-2/.mod formats. So what do you think?
