Why won't my 2011 21" iMac recognize my 40" Samsung Series 6 LED Tv as a display?

I recently purchased the 2011 iMac and was tring to connect it to my Samsung 40" Led Tv. The tv says that their is no signal and isn't even recognized when i try and "detect display".  I am using a Mini displayPort to Hdmi cable that has worked on my other Sony tv.  I have tried it numerous times and can't figure out what the solution is. Can anyone give me any advice? Is there some type of software i need for my Mac to recognize my TV or something.

I have found a solution MilkMuny, I had previously tried my 10’ Thunderbolt to HDMI cable (eBay £7.95  10FT Mini DisplayPort Thunderbolt to HDMI TV Cable Adapter for MacBook Pro iMac) and encountered the same issue as you. I then read somewhere on the net that it was a handshake issue between the iMac and the Samsung TV, on another thread I read that a HDMI switch may resolve this issue.  So I purchased one of the cheapest powered HDMI switches I could find on Amazon (£10.99 Kinivo 301BN Premium 3 port High speed HDMI switch with IR wireless remote and AC Power adapter - supports 3D, 1080p) because of Amazon’s amazing returns policy I wanted to return it if it didn’t solve my problem. I powered down everything and plugged the thunderbolt cable into the first HDMI port on the switch and a cheep £4 HDMI to HDMI cable from the switch to my HDMI 1 port on the back of my Samung TV. I powered up the switch, then the TV a few seconds later, finally the iMac.  It instantly worked!  I had to adjust some of the settings in the iMAC display properties so the picture on the TV was mirrored rather than extended and I also had to adjust the scale slider so ensure the whole of the iMac screen displayed on the TV and didn’t loose the menu bar at the top.  Now my kids can play Moshi Monsters on the 37” TV. Should I have had to buy a HDMI switch and an extra HDMI cable, should I have to have an extra device plugged into the power socket using up extra electricity, absolutely not. Do I care, well for the extra £15 or so I’m not going to worry. When Apple/Samsung get their acts together and let me dispense with the switch, I’m more than happy with the result.

Why won't my new Airport Extreme recognize my USB external hard drive.  I put a USB port on the base station, and the system recognizes my printer.  When I click on disks - it lists my printer, and when I click on Printers it lists my printer.  What do I need to do to get it to recognize the external drive?  BTW, the MacBook recognizes it, no problem.  I have erased it and reformatted it.  I am running the new Lion OS.  Any help is appreciated.

Yes, I saw a post on one of these threads about a powered USB hub so I ran over to Office Depot and picked one up.  I was finally able to see the HD in the Airport Utility.  Yay!

  • Why doesn't my brand-new iMac recognize my router?

I have a D-Link DIR 625 wireless router. My brand-new 27 inch iMac does recognize the router but I am on able to connect to the Internet or mail. My older iMac, my daughter"s 2010 MacBook Pro and two windows systems recognize and connect to the Internet and mail without a problem. In system preferences, network shows that my new iMac recognizes the D-Link but I am unable to connect to the Internet or mail. The AppleCare representative told me that I would need to change the router from an N router to a G router in order for my new iMac to recognize it. That doesn't seem to make any sense to me. It might be an issue with Sharing?

Do you have MAC address filtering turned on in the Router?  If so, and if your new iMac's MAC address is not in the filtering list, your iMac would 'recognize' the router but not be able to get an IP address and therefore not be able to connect to the internet or mail.

  • Why won't my mac book pro recognize my external hard drive?

I'm having a battery issue with my computer, and need to bring it to the nearby Apple Store to have the battery looked at and possibly changed. I wanted to back up  my computer in preparation for my visit, but for whatever reason, my Mac Book Pro is not recognizing my trusty LaCie external hard drive, a device I have used with this computer for two years now and performed countless backups with. I am not sure why this is happening. I have already tried restarting the computer multiple times, and unplugging and replugging the hard drive, both to no avail. Are there any ways I can get my computer to recognize my hard drive in order to perform the backup? Thanks.

    Hi all -
I cannot view my flash drive OR my office server, which I should be able to connect to via VPN. VPN was installed on my Macbook Pro at my office on Friday. It worked fine. Now I bring it home, and I connect using VPN, and it shows that I am connected, yet the server hard drive icon does not appear on my desktop (as it usually did) and I can't see how to access the server at work.
I also cannot view flash drives when I plug them in - they just don't show up.
I had Norton installed; I read online I should disable that. I did this, and no luck. I also have already done all the things suggested on this post and have all the boxes checked, and yet, still cannot use a flash drive or access my work server.
I am stuck? Do I have to bring my Macbook pro in for service? I have NOT upgraded to Mavericks.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Why won't my Mac Book Pro recognize my Flash Drive?

So I have never experienced this problem before. My flash drives always appeared on my desktop, then one afternoon, my usual flash drive was not showing up on my MacBook, so I assumed it was the flash drive and not my computer. Since that day, I haven't really used a flash drive for anything until today when I tried to save a few photographs on a different flash drive this time. I plugged in the flash drive in both usb ports and still nothing. I cannot find my flash drive anywhere! I checked all my system preferences and everything seems to be right so why am I still having this issue? I don't have a problem when i plug in my ipod or ipad, and I can't find my flash drive in Disk Utilities either.

  • Why won't my mid 07 iMac shut down?

My 07 keeps hanging up, won't restart or shut down without holding the power button down.
I upgraded the ram, thought this would help, same outcome.
    Any ideas?

Try turning off the anti-virus software to see if it makes a difference.
Generally speaking Macs only need anti-virus if you run Windows on it, or if you share files with Windows users.

  • Why won't Outlook 2011 Contacts sync with iPhone Contacts?

When i left a previous company i wanted to keep my outlook contacts. To do this i exported them from the company PC into a .PST file. I was then given a MacBook Air at my current company and wanted to import the contacts from the .PST file to my outlook (Outlook 2011). This was fine and i have my old contacts on my new work MacBook. My problem is that i cannot get the contacts to show in my iPhone 6 (company phone) contacts. When i go to itunes, then my device and contacts i am given the option to sync contacts from different places. The only place that comes up is OWA and there is no option to sync the .PST file that is on my outlook. I need to be able to sync these so that if i add a contact at the office on the mac or if i add a contact on my phone when out meeting a client that they then appear on both devices no matter which one it was created on.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I did what you said and everything looked and worked perfectly...except the events still aren't showing up on my iPhone even though they are in Google Calendar. How much time does it take to populate the iphone calendar with the   events from the just added calendar?  I changed the settings a couple of hours ago.
    Thank you!

  • Why won't my late 2006 iMac (5,1) finish the login process...

... after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. Did a straight upgrade from install (not an archive & install).
It gets to the login screen quickly, enter password and then endless beachball.
Started in single user mode and did fsck, restarted from install disk & repaired (no problems) and repaired preferences. Restarted with PRAM reset. Restarted in safe mode.
    No problems booting from DVD.
ONE TIME I rebooted after single user mode and it worked, I used that opportunity to run the combo updater (downloaded today from Apple).
I did find a support page that spoke of a similar condition in early aluminum (2007) iMacs, but this file would not install on my machine.
I did an archive and install of Leopard and then updated via Software Update, which should have gotten any updates needed for this machine. Now again, it only boots as far as the blue screen (on auto login). I did not see a similar update file needed for THIS iMac.

  • Why won't my 2011 MBP boot from bus-powered USB devices?

In the past, I have often made use of OS X's ability to boot from an external USB device. Before installing major OS updates, or new productivity software, I usually clone my system drive onto an external USB drive using Superduper or CarbonCopyCloner. Once the clone is complete, I can then boot from the external drive (by holding Option at startup, and choosing the cloned image from the boot disk menu). This has been incedibly useful in the past when I've had hard disk problems, or when I've upgraded to a new Mac.
My issue is with my new 2011 model 17" MBP. I am only able to boot from an external USB drive if the drive isn't bus-powered. If I try to boot from an OS X image located on a bus-powered USB flash drive or pocket hard drive, the drive seems to power down upon choosing it from the boot menu and I'm greeted by a blank gray screen. I've also tested this technique using a bus-powered DVD drive containing the Snow Leopard retail DVD (and a Windows 7 install DVD for what it's worth) and the problem remains. The optical drive will spin up upon startup, but power down as soon as I choose to boot from the DVD.
This issue only seems to affect my 2011 MBP. I've had no issues getting the same technique to work on my old 2007 MBP or a 2008 model MacBook.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Fair enough.  I'll give that a try as a last resort.
I used my wife's MacBook Pro, Target Disk Mode and a Firewire 800 cable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as I don't have an internal optical drive any more--just the standard HD and the SSD.
I did use the retail disc, and I'm wondering if the issue might be that since my machine is fairly new, I might have had to use the stock install disk--which I seem to have lost.  I have the Applications DVD, but not the OS disc.
To that end, do you know of a way to get a replacement disc?  I bought my machine at the store, I wonder if they'd be willing to copy one for me...

  • Why won't my 27" 2009 iMac turn on?

I bought a 27" iMac in 2009. It worked perfectly fine until around November 2013. I updated from 10.6 to Mountain Lion and a couple weeks later it stayed frozen on the login screen. We got the hard drive replaced (but couldn't recover any data) and I currently have Mountain Lion. Last night, my brother was using it, put it to sleep and left it on the whole night. I've done that quite a few times before but it was fine. Today at noon, I went on and saw it was on his account. I clicked on his name in the upper right corner, then on mine, and typed my password in. After clicking enter, a loading circle began, and then the screen went black. I left it for a few hours and now, at 3:30, I've tried unplugging it, holding down the power button, turning off the circuit breaker, plugged other things into that outlet (they worked), etc. When I press the button on the back, I hear some sort of clicking noises from the inside, but that's it. What could be the problem? Before logging into my account it was fine. Am I doing something wrong? And if so, how do I fix it? I don't want to be buying a new computer.
If you don't want to read all that: The computer was left on at night, it's usually fine after that, I went on this morning, tried logging into my account, the screen went black.
    Any support is helpful.

You're not doing anything wrong, and leaving it on overnight also isn't a problem. My computer is on ALL the time, it only shuts down when a software update requires a restart. You should take it in for a diagnostic and estimate as it seems that you're dealing with a hardware problem.

  • Why won't the X Mavericks installer recognize my admin password?

The X Mavericks installer continues to reject my admin password, here are the actions I've taken:
Downloaded the Mavericks Update (3 separate times)
    Reset Master Password
    Changed/Reset Admin Password several times
    Verified all passwords in keychain
    Verified and Repaired disk permissions
I've never had this happen before and I'm at a loss. I'm REALLY hoping I can avoid creating a boot disk and doing a clean install... but that's the only other thing I can think to do.
    Any help is HUGELY appreciated.

  • Why won't my 2011 MBP boot from my new SSD?

I had MicroCenter install the drive without issue using a OWC DataDoubler in the optical bay.  I know the newer MBPs have a 6GBPS controller for the optical bay but my SSD--a 128GB Kingston V100+ (SNVP325S2128GB)--is 3 GBPS so it wouldn't make a difference.  Besides, I wanted to keep the SMS for my 750GB WD HD.
The SSD is readable and writeable in Snow Leopard (10.6.7), booted from my standard HD.  The only way I could install OS X on it was via Target Disk Mode using my wife's 2008 MBP, which completed without error.
I have tried holding the Option key on startup and selecting the SSD, as well as booting into the standard HD installation and setting the SSD as the Startup Disk in System Preferences.  Neither works.
The SSD was formatted with one Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID partition.
I have tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM to no avail.
    Any ideas?
