Widespread problems?

Hi, I was just about to push the “Check Out Now” button on a black MacBook when I decided to visit the Discussions area… now I’m wondering if I should hit that check out button at all. It seems like these MacBooks are having more than a few problems, ie. Screens flickering, hard drives dying, not waking from sleep, etc. Of course I can’t be sure that the problems listed here are widespread or just that the few people experiencing issues have concentrated here looking for help. After all, how many people hang out here if their MacBook is doing fine?
My last Mac was a 12” iBook. Three years of heavy (but careful) traffic on the road and it never failed me – in fact, I’d still be using it now but it was stolen last week.
My point is, I’m used to having a reliable Mac by my side. I need reliability more than the latest OS or the dual boot capabilities. I also don’t ask too much from a laptop – email, word processing, and an occasional DVD – that’s about it.
I’ll pay the two grand for a MacBook with a 200GB hard drive and 2 GB of memory if it’s reliable – then again, I could pick up a used iBook on eBay for 600 bucks. Any thoughts? Are these widespread problems with the MacBooks or isolated incidents?
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The problems I've had with my MacBook:
-A key popped up, the enter key. I believe it may have been a little cracked, and through use, it became worn, and part cracked, making the key pop up.
-The top part of the case cracked, I believe from resting my wrist on it. My new one does not have this problem.
-Then, my superdrive ...died. This may have been because of one disk, which had a different texture, but I doubt it. However, when I got it repaired, a new problem arouse.
-The company I took it to get it fixed was an "Apple Specialist" but they didn't take good care of it. They clipped the display wire just enough to damage it, disconnecting the iSight. A quick (okay, not quick, the store's like an hour away) drive to the apple store, and it was fixed.
However, I have terrible luck
I believe the MacBook is a great computer, and the problems I've had with it have been easily fixed. These problems are rare, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Apple makes their discussions page easy to access, and viewable to all. This is something other computer companies do not do. For example, everyone made a big deal about the first MacBooks having a random shutdown syndrome. It wasn't many of them, and it was only the very first ones. However, HP also has this problem...with their current laptops. In fact, one of my friend's burnt out.
All computers have their problems, and I believe Macs have far less than any other company. So go ahead, click that button, and you'll be enjoying a beautiful MacBook in no time =)

• Isolated Issues vs Widespread Problems

I've been reading these boards through many new product releases, including all of the previous versions of the iPhone. Don't let these threads, or the number of post, scare you. Apple has sold over a million new phones in the last two days, and the vast majority of buyers aren't posting here with problems. And many of the people who have experienced legitimate issues have posted, and continue to post, in multiple threads. Before you panic and write off the new phone as a failure, consider the following:
Isolated Issues vs. Widespread Problems
With any product there will be isolated issues -legitimate, but not really a worry for potential buyers. For example, a few people have mentioned problems with syncing data or sound/speaker troubles. But most of us have had no problems with these.
There are three "big" issues which have been raised repeatedly on the boards:
1. loss of signal when you "hold the phone wrong" -Yes, it's real. But is it as bad as people say? I've not dropped a single call, or had a total signal loss. Only a dropped bar or two. And no complaints from anyone that I've spoken with on the phone.
2, yellow spots/screens -Another widely-reported problem. There have been several reports that this is due to a glue that hasn't cured properly and that it will go away with use. The fact that the "yellow screen" posts have faded to the bottom of the list suggests that the problem is, in fact, going away, or at least not nearly as widespread as the posters would have you believe. And Apple is reportedly exchanging the phones for new headsets.
3. proximity sensor not working -I've had this one myself. Many people have reported that the screen remains active during a call, causing your ear to hit the mute button or hang up on someone. There is a reported fix: reset the phone. No word yet from Apple on this, but several people report that the fix works. I've done it, and no problems since.
I got my phone on the 23rd, and have used just about every feature on it with great success.

I have to agree with finii. I'm sure there are people who are experiencing specific problems, but there are many factors contributing to even the seemingly well-documented problems that may mean the issues are not anywhere near as dramatic as they may look here. For instance, there are a LOT of issues I've seen here that are simply due, in my opinion, to network congestion, or the typical busy-ness online that occurs around a launch-day.
And keep in mind that Apple has released iOS4, Mac OSX 10.6.4, the 4G and iTunes 9.2 all very closely together, not to mention Xcode3 for developers. Granted, all of the above are related technologies, but still, it's a major debut of a major step forward for the company, and all things considered, Apple is doing spectacularly well.
I also remain impressed with Apple's customer support. At a time when almost EVERYONE else in business takes a "support? what's that? we offer the means to keep our customers as far away from us as possible once they've bought something from us, via ridiculously involuted voice systems, email and support "solution packages," etc.," Apple's support is simple, direct.... and FAST. Amazingly so. And the support people are friendly, knowledgeable and... supportive! NOBODY else out there comes even close.
So, calm down everyone; all the issues here will be addressed as best they can.
I also HIGHLY recommend a lot of diligence on your end when you, for instance, consider a major OS or hardware upgrade. I can't tell you how many times I've seen one of two troubling scenarios. First, someone dives in at the deep end, the day of launch or release, when the traffic is most intense, and then is surprised if they run into any challenges. Secondly, someone sticks with a platform for five or six years and then is astonished when the support no longer exists for that platform.
One thing to say to each of those scenarios. In the first case, it is YOUR responsibility, individually, to decide whether you want to take the risk -- and yes, there is risk -- getting into the middle of launch-day craziness. If you get frustrated with the results, you can blame no-one for taking that risk but yourself.
Secondly, if you've used modern computer technology for any length of time, you know that technological change continues to be dramatically fast. I have a Windows PC that is "merely" three years old and already, I can pick up something for a fraction of the cost that's literally triple as fast, more reliable, and easier to use (Windows 7 vs. Windows XP). Should I be complaining that the companies that made the hardware and software for my 3-year-old PC have "abandoned" me? No. They've continued to dramatically reduce cost, complexity and dramatically increased reliability over time.
I've seen some people yearn for the "good old days" of Macintosh before the demise of PPC-based technology. Well, remember that the market was spectacularly smaller, the hardware was significantly less complex, both in architecture and sourcing, and the cost was significantly higher for a lot less functionality. A modern Mac/iPod/iPhone/iPad is an absolute marvel, even compared with something made three years ago. And even with that, Apple has done a far better job of sustaining older technology -- hardware and software -- than its competitors.
There are some fundamental underlying decisions for Apple that have contributed to its success, and I think those decisions (too many to go into here) are going to continue to contribute to the company's competitive edge for a long time to come. There will be growing pains, too, but compared with everyone else -- and I'm not even just talking computers -- Apple's doing a great job of dealing with them.
Take a deep breath and enjoy, if you can. If you can't... find something simpler to do that you can. And also, as we used to say in the old days of free broadcast TV: if you don't like the programming, you're free to change the channel. It's all your choice, and your responsibility, to figure out what you want. Remember that.

• IPhone 6 screen clicking/bad glue - a widespread problem?

Ugraded to iPhone 6 in early November and within a week I started to notice a distinct clicking noise while/immediately after touching the screen.
To clarify, this was a noise being created by some hardware anomoly (it happens when the device is off.)
To be clear, I have BABIED this phone in ways that my 4s would have dreamed of.
It has never been dropped, sat on, spilled on.. I don't take it into the bathroom during showers or expose it to any extreme temperatures or humidity of any kind, apart from unavoidable use in the winter. I don't breath on it the wrong way! .
After a very breif search, it turns out that a whole lot of people are experiencing this issue.
SO, after about 4 hours on the phone with Apple total, I've had the device serviced twice.
FIrst by a certified Apple tech in my area, who cleaned the device for particulate that might be causing the problem (which he had apparently encountered before)
Unfortunately, this did nothing to help the issue.
I then drove 2 hours to the nearest Apple store. I was told that they had also seen this issue, and that it potentially had something to do with bad glue used in the screen.
I Personally don't know what particular way the glue is used.
After another couple of hours of waiting, they decided to do a full screen replacement, which the tech claimed solved the issue "like 100% of the time"
About 3 days went by before the issue started again, this time in a completely different area of the screen and much louder.
I'm definitely going to return and ask for a replacement phone, and I doubt that Apple will give me trouble there.
I guess I'm just deeply confused by how/why Apple is using such terrible construction practices in these new phones.
I REALLY want to like this phone, but this clicking makes me feel like i'm using my old blackberry storm, which I still consider to be the most disgusting/deeply funny encounter with mobile phone technology that I've ever had..
seems like when one of the chief reasons to buy an iPhone is elegance in its hardware, Apple probbaly should have done at least A LITTLE BIT of testing before shipping millions of units.
Does Apple ever address or change any of these glaring flaws? If this has happened to me twice, considering how well I have treated this phone, it must be happening all over and in huge numbers. What's most dissapointing is that I loved my iPhone 4s, it had super good construction and I really did beat the **** out of it.
I took it into the snow, rain, into the sauna, tossed it around, sat on it all day and dropped it countless times without any problems at all.
I guess I'm not necessarily looking for advice, since I'm already planning on returning for a new iPhone 6
However, my fear is that this will just happen again to the replacement. just trying to get a scale of how widespread this issue is and if it's even worth my time - since it sounds like it might just happen again.

I had this issue with my last iPhone 6 in the upper left corner. Noticed it when I was playing games in landscape. Screen sounded "tappy" and loose when hitting the D-pad control in that area. I didn't really mind and didn't want to exchange again because I already went through several due to screen shadows, etc. Eventually I started getting "ghost touches" where apps would open, things were getting clicked that I was not clicking (even after full restore and set device up as new). Not sure if it's related but the only time I've ever experienced this was with an Android phone where the display was replaced and the ground wire was loose. Apple replaced my unit however this new one still has a slightly loose upper left corner again. Sometimes it switches to the bottom left and will make a click when I press hard in that area and release. If it's tolerable for now you may want to hold off on replacement until later in the year while still inside the warranty.

• 4attery drain while iPod is in standby: Just me or widespread problem?

Hello
First the problem/symptoms I see on my iPod touch, 32GB, 1.1.4 firmware:
About 1-5 times per week (depending on how much I use it), the battery drains within 2-3 hours from full to 3%.
Sometimes the iPod is crashed at this time (I can revive it with the two-button-press)
Once so far I cought it while discharging: I switched it on after 1 hour in standby, and the battery was 1/3 down. There was nothing unusual to see on the screen. It did not further discharge after switching it off again.
WLAN is switched off meanwhile, and I still see it discharge.
As far as I remember, the problems started at about the time I bought a new case (from Griffin) for the iPod, which also included a screen protector.
So far it always discharged only after usage (listening to music or watching a movie), never after having it charged or synched. So I somehow wonder if I switch it off wrongly (even though I always do it the same way, and most of the time it does not discharge). I usually press the top button to get the screen lit, then press "pause" on the screen to stop the music, then I press the top button again to switch the screen off.
So my question: Do other people observe similar problems? Do you have things in common with my observations? Did you by any chance solve the problem?
Thanks and regards, Martin

I have an iPod touch 16GB and a 32GB version (both running 1.1.4 with the January software upgrades)... both are kept in the Griffin case you mentioned in the earlier post with the screen protectors fitted. The batteries on both touchs have never experienced the battery drain issue you mention - even when they have been used for a long period of time or they have been stored for several weeks without use. The magnets are too weak to do any harm to the iPod, which would suggest to me that you may have a battery issue, that may be worth getting Apple to check under warranty. The battery may be getting too warm when in use (which isn't normal and could cause the battery drain issue), meaning that the iPod appears to function normally without the case as the heat can dissipate more easily.
Hope this helps

• Unable to download OSX Lion is a widespread problem!!!

I'm having the exact same problem as anyone else: I'm unable to downoald OSX Lion, the reason is to my information that Apple servers can't handle the heavy demand on this software, same problem for Apple's new hardware products actually. Being a journalist I will pass this on to my colleagues from the computer department and make sure they will release articles about it. But for now, I believe most users will have to be a bit patient...

My friend, as a journalist, I intend to care about non-initiated users, that is to say common people, and here I believe Apple should improve its services. In the past few years, the company as amazingly grown trhoughout the world and developped its products everywhere, which is great. As it reaches a larger number of people and social classes, its service you follow, that's all I mean! ;-)

• There are white squares on my screen at the top. Apple care is telling me I'm out of warranty. This seems like an Apple LCD screen issue. The problem seems to be widespread. How is apple dealing with this. apple care told me it would cost me 260.00

Apple should be fixing this problem for free. It is a hardware issue. Check the Web. A lot of your customers are having the same problem. If I have to spend money to fix this I will be choosing a different cell phone provider

That the problem has happened to someone else, or even to a couple of dozen people, does not make it a "widespread problem". Apple has sold millions of iPhones, so even if hundreds have experienced the problem that's still a very small failure rate.
Your iPhone is out of warranty, so you will need to pay for service. If Apple finds this to be a screen issue, in many Apple Stores they can replace the screen for US $149. If it's not a screen issue or your local Apple Store can not yet replace the screen, then Apple replaces the entire iPhone. Those are their policies, and complaining about it, particular here in these user-to-user forums, will accomplish nothing.
You are free to pay some unauthorized shop to attempt repair, or attempt your own repair, if you wish, though you will void any further support from Apple, for any price, if you do.
There is nothing more anyone here can tell you.
Regards.

• Hanging problem with Adobe CS6 in Mountain Lion

I recently upgraded my retina Macbook pro to Mountain Lion and was having some trouble with Adobe CS6 apps hanging on startup among other things (including iCal crashing on startup)
I did a clean install of Mountain Lion and Manually rebuilt my applications folder so that Adobe MAster COllection was installed freshly on a clean install of ML.
Now it is still sporadically hanging when I try to open Photoshop, Bridge or other Adobe apps. The only thing that seems to fix it is a restart which is inconvenient when you're in the middle of work.
ANy ideas?

Thanks for this. I had heard of the fonts problem some people have had. All my fonts were freshly installed by either the system or Adobe when I installed Master Collection. Following your advice, I just verified every font and the only problem that showed up (as you had predicted) was a minor duplication which I corrected. So, it seems unlikely to be the fonts.
As for your other point, I have been using Final Cut Pro X and that has worked fine. The only other app that has given me trouble has been Calendar which seems to get strangely stuck sometimes while it is updating. Makes me wonder if there's something going on with the network I'm using.
One thing I hadn't thought of was that it could be a problem with gfx card switcher. This seems unlikely but I'll try disabling it and see if that helps.
Weirdly, today when I had this issue, Photoshop loaded up ok but then hung when I tried to load any file into it. Bridge wouldn't start at all. I didn't try the others. Yesterday I was having problems with Illustrator.
Anyway, I see what you mean about it not being a widespread problem - which is why I started this thread. It seems no one else is having any issues. If anyone else knows what I should look for in my configuration please let me know.

• Nokia Lumia 530 backup problem (Using Windows 8.1)

My phone has suddenly stopped backing up, even though it keeps telling me it hasn't been backed up for some time, and needs to be backed up. When I tell it to back up, it gets to about 99%, and then I get the message "there was a problem backing up your settings. Try again later." What exactly does "later" mean? I've been trying at various times of the day every day for about 4-5 weeks now. From what I've read on the internet, this does appear to be quite a widespread problem.
Other things I have tried:
Turning the phone off and back on again.
Unchecking the "Apps back up" button
Uchecking the "Settings back up" button
Checking both backup buttons again
Deleting previous back ups using my phone
Logging into One Drive on my laptop and manually deleting previous backups
Changing the screen time out on my phone to 15 minutes (as opposed to 1 minute)
Making sure I have a good phone and wifi signal, and having the phone plugged into the charger
None of this has had any effect!!!!
The strange thing is that when I go onto One Drive, it tells me that it did back up (I've only got the one phone, so there's no chance I'm getting confused between phones.)
Please does anyone have any advice? Also, is there a way of telling my phone to automatically back up at regular intervals, eg once a week, or once a month, so I don't have to keep thinking about it?
Thank you for reading all this!

Hi, TulaTheQuang. Have you tried rebooting your phone by pressing the power and volume down keys simultaneously for 10-15 seconds? Also, check if all system apps on your phone are up to date. Go to Settings> applications> store> check for updates. Check if you will be able to successfully backup your files.
We'll wait for your response.

• Annoying problem with shift key in limit dialog Brio 6.6.4

My company uses Brio Insight & Designer v6.6.4. We (meaning almost all users) are encountering an annoying problem whenadding a limit to a query using the limit dialog. When try toenter a limit value using the shift key, as in Shift T to enter acapital T, the limit value field ends up with a value like"TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT". Thisis very annoying and widespread problem with us. It seemed tostart when we upgraded to Win XP SP2. Is there a solution forother than to "upgrade to the latest version"?

Unfortunately not. The only way we avoided this issue was to upgrade or write the text into a text editor and cut and paste the text into the section name box.

• OK - my 4s all of a sudden does not connect to wifi - i've noticed chatter out there on this happening to a lot of other people. Apple seems not to want to acknowledge this as a problem. What's up Apple? Should be better than that!

If this is a widespread problem ... then it sounds like Apple needs to step up.
By their handling of this problem I can only suspect that they have an arrangement with carriers to have the wifi become disabled so that we have to use the carriers... and go over our ... data plans.
6 months to go on my plan ... sorry Apple but after 15 years of loyalty ... I'm going to have to reconsider my next phone. When the customer gets treated like a buisiness ... then I guess we have to do the same to you ... nothing personal. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out!

Hi Seraphiel07.
I have a very similar issue. Hardware involved:
Apple MacMini (Mid 2011) - OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple TV (3rd Generation). Home Sharing (access) enabled.
Apple MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2009). OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple iPad 2 (Wifi only). iOS 6
Apple iPhone 4S. iOS 6
All connected through:
Apple Time Capsule 8.0211n (4th Gen)
I have an iTunes library on the MacBook Pro, shared over "Home Sharing" and another (duplicate content, different library name) iTunes library on my MacMini, which is also accessed through the Apple TV.
All software is current (as of Sep 26th).
All movies are iTunes purchases. 80 in total.
All files are purchased (and home shared) under one account.
My last two iTunes purchases both HD movies on 09/17/2012 and 09/05/2012 refuse to appear on any device accessing either of the two Libraries over Home Sharing. It should be noted that every other movie (the other 78) all show up and play correctly. I therefore know it is not an issue with connectivity, otherwise I would see zero movies available.
I have:
1. Removed all content from each Library and re-added
2. Upgraded the OS on the MacMini 10.8.2
3. Tested viewing the two missing movies on other Apple devices and no luck.
4. Turn home sharing on and off within iTunes and also on each device.
It would appear to me that the issue is with the files themselves, rather than the devices as different devices and different versions have been tested.
All comments welcome.
