Widgets to Desktop

How do I move widgets to the Desktop?

You can get Widgets on the desktop by starting Developper mode if you are willing to use the terminal.
see Instructions below.
Or you can download this widgets to desktop app here:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24561/widget-to-desktop
Complete Details  (tested on 10.6.6)
1) Open the "Terminal" app *don't worry it's easy* (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and write (or cut and paste) this line of text, beside the existing where the small grey cursor is.
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
Then push enter ... and close the "Terminal" app
2) Now Restart the Dock (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor > double click "Dock" > click "Quit" > click "Force Quit") the Dock will automatically restart ... (Or just restart your Mac if that's easier for you)
3) Open the dashboard (tap F4), click on a widget and HOLD DOWN the mouse button then move it slightly and keep HOLDING DOWN the mouse button. Now push the F4 key again a this widget will stay behind, drag it a new location as it will be "Always on Top" ... thats it!
4) Now to get rid of the widget from your desktop, click and HOLD DOWN the mouse button on the widget you want removed, tap F4 to bring up the dashboard. The release the mouse button Tap F4 again and it's gone.
5) At this point however the discarded widgets exist as zombies in a kind of no mans land. When you look at the dashboard, the discarded widgets will be shown faded or greyed out, they are not on the dash board but neither are they on the desktop, but it's an easy fix.
6) To bring them back to life you need to tap F4 to open the dash board ...now click once on the black PLUS SIGN sign way on the bottom left of your screen (it will change to an "X" and your screen will fade and raise up) and another "X" will appear on the widgets ... Just click the "X"'s on any faded widgets and they will now be back to normal, ready to be used again.
The only real disadvantage of this procedure besides the items being "Always on Top" is it uses the same amount of resources as if the Dashboard is fully activated (check you activity monitor).

    Hi,
    The file that Bob sends references Oracle servers. I have just rewritten his document to a generic use as you are not the first person to have this problem. If you send me an email to alex.neill@{see profile} I'll send you a copy. This will tell you how to add the Widgets to iGoogle, the retrieve the URL and then add it as a widget.

  • Adding Dashboard widgets to Desktop & Keeping it "Sticky"

    Hi,
    I know there are many posts out there on part of this topic.
    I am aware on how to add widgets from Dashboard to the Desktop.
    However, I haven't figured out how to ensure that the newly added widget does not overlay itself on the application I am using and that it continues to be in the background on the desktop.
    I just want to be able to hit Command + F3 and see my desktop along with the widgets right there.
    Much thanks.
    My specs:
    Device: MacBook Pro 15.4 (Late 2013)
    OS: OS X 10.9.4

  • Widgets in Desktop?

    Simple Question: Can I put my widgets in the desktop?
    ~Christoph

    Sue,
    There is only one Terminal located in Applications/Utilities.
    Yes, the dashboard is supposed to take up the whole screen. Just click and drag the widget to an empty space on the dashboard, and press F12 (or whatever your shortcut for dashboard is). Hope it works!

  • Widgets on Desktop?

    I know that widgets can be moved to float above windows, but is there a way to make them reside below all windows, but stay on the desktop, much like vista's gadgets or SuperKaramba or GDesklets?

    So is there anyway to do this without downloading software though? Like an option in "system preferences." I have "mac pilot" and "onyx" and with one of those there is an option to put Dashboard into developer mode and I checked off the option, except I don't know how to "activate" that now....? Thanks!

  • Widget on desktop!

    I am at a loss...suddenly i have my weather widget on my desktop...it is no longer on the dashboard, and i can't get rid of it! it is front and center, working, but a real distraction. how do I get it off?

    Click on the widget and drag it while still keeping the mouse button down, press f12, then let go of the mouse button. The widget should restore to its regular Dashboard layer.

  • How to drag widgets to desktop mac in Lion

    help me out in this. i have gone thgough all the community's posts but did nt find the corret method for OS X Lion..!!!

    Hi,
    Not sure if you have fixed this, but I'd use launchd to create the route on startup.
    If you create a text file in /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.imac.route.plist
    with:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
    "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
      <key>Label</key>
      <string>local.imac.route</string>
      <key>OnDemand</key>
      <false/>
      <key>ProgramArguments</key>
      <array>
      <string>route</string>
      <string>add</string>
      <string>224.0.0.0/4</string>
      <string>[GATEWAY]</string>
      </array>
      <key>KeepAlive</key>
      <false/>
      <key>RunAtLoad</key>
      <true/>
      <key>ServiceIPC</key>
      <false/>
      <key>UserName</key>
      <string>root</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    You need to replace [GATEWAY] with the IP address of the gateway to use like 10.11.12.13
    Then as root (login as an admin user and use "sudo su -" to become root) type:
    launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/local.imac.route.plist
    You should be up and running.

  • Widget on the desktop

    Hi
    I have managed to get the Weather widget on the desktop. Now, how can I get it not to appear when I open an application, as "not always on top".
    thanks

    Because you are using the "devmode" trick to move the widget to desktop, it is impossible for you to move it behind any of your applications -- it will always remain on top.
    The only way to put a widget on the desktop AND control what layer it appears in is to use the shareware products Amnesty Widget Browser or Amnesty Singles. With these products, you can place the Weather widget on the desktop and make it "not always on top."
    Disclaimer: I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link [my company developed Amnesty].

  • World Clock Widget appears on my Desktop

    My world clock widget appears on my desktop. I can't get it off the desktop. It should be apprearing with the rest of the widgets when I call for the widget's screen. I have rebooted my machine...still there. I went into the widget's window tried to X it and I can't.
    Help...
    Thanks, =bill

    Glad it worked.
    By default widgets do not work on the desktop. Some utilities allow you to do that, alternatively Terminal voodoo can be used.
    *defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES*
    Turns widget on desktop on,
    *defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode NO*
    off.

    Thanks for your advice, I am just wondering whether this program can help.

  • Converting Burrito Flex Mobile App to Desktop

    Hi Guys!  Have just developed an app for Android using Burrito.  It works nicely on a phone but it is also great as a little 'widget like' desktop app.
    Is there any way to package it so that it may be distributed as an Air app that runs exactly like it does when run in emulation mode (adl) from Flash Builder?  If not, what is the simplest path to convert the <mobileApplication> to a <windowedApplication>?
    Thanks,
    Richard
    Update:  Surprised no one has answered this.  I am new to Flash Builder and I figured you guys would know.  Have been looking at viewstacks in standard Air apps and trying to figure how to use this to achieve the same effect as a mobile app.  Looks like quite a lot of work to rewrite the app to Air on the Desktop ... is there an easier route .... anyone?

    Hi Richard,
    I was able to complile and deploy my Android app using command line air/android packaging and adding required air swc's to my project. I used the following packageApplication.bat(downloaded from livedocs) to package my MobileApplication as both an air app and android:
    :: AIR application packaging

    :: APK INSTALL
    echo Installing package... %APK_FILE%
    call adb install %APK_FILE%
    if errorlevel 1 goto failed2
    echo.
    echo Android setup installed: %APK_FILE%
    echo.
    goto end
    :certificate
    echo Certificate not found: %CERTIFICATE%
    echo.
    echo Troubleshotting:
    echo A certificate is required, generate one using 'CreateCertificate.bat'
    echo.
    goto end
    :failed
    echo AIR setup creation FAILED.
    echo.
    echo Troubleshotting:
    echo did you configure the Flex SDK path in this Batch file?
    echo.
    :failed2
    echo Android install FAILED.
    echo.
    :end
    pause
    //END BATCH FILE
    I then did a diff between a Flex Buritto Moblie/AIR project library swc's included and identified swc included in AIR and missing in mobile. I updated the project libraries by adding the following swc's:
    sparkskins.swc
    utilities.swc
    aircore.swc
    airframework.swc
    airspark.swc
    applicationupdater.swc
    applicationupdater_ui.swc
    Then performed a clean build and ran packageApplication from my bin-debug dir and was successfully able to install and run the mobile application on the desktop :-).
    Being new to supporting mobile phones, tablets, TV screens along with our web and desktop clients I am not yet sure how we will structure our projects and get maximum code reuse and UI consistancy across these form factors. I have already created a common library project containing all remote stubs, value objects and common utilities and am still trying to figure out how much mileage I can get out of my mobile views. I like the View Navigator and ActionBar navigation on all screens we support and am thinking to extend the ViewNavigator and add additional states along with the 'portrait' and 'landscape' currently offered, like 'portraitPhone', 'portraitTablet', 'portraitTV', 'portraitPC' and leverage my existing mobile views to use these states to adjust the UI layout to accomodate the new realestate... but still learning...
    Hope that helps!
    Cheers,
    Greg

  • Dashboard widgets on Thunderbolt?

    Is there a way to display Dashboard widgets on Thunderbolt Desktop?
    I did find a solution to permanently move Dashboard widgets to Desktop, but this means that when I use my MacBookPro in stand-alone mode, the widgets take up too much space and I have to move them back to the Dashboard.
    Ideally, I would like a solution to have widgets on Desktop when using Thunderbolt, but revert to default when in Macbook Pro standalone mode.
    Is this possible? Is there a way to (say) divide the Thunderbolt screen?

    You can pull a widget onto your desktop doing the following:
    1) Open Dashboard.
    2) Open the Dashboard shelf (+ sign).
    3) Click and grab a widget from the shelf. Keep holding the mouse down.
    4) Drag the widget onto the Dashboard but -- while keeping the mouse held down -- press the key to get rid of Dashboard (F12 typically).
    5) When your desktop re-appears. Drop the widget.
    Now, it should stay on your desktop.

  • Very useful Bigger-ARD(er)-Widget tip

    I use the Apple Remote Desktop 3 Dashboard widget to check the condition of my servers and users without having to spark up ARD. But I find the screen-size displayed in the widget is too small.
    I discovered I could increase the screen size by doing the following:
    1.Control-click on /Library/Widgets/Remote Desktop.wdgt, and choose Show Package Contents.
    2. In the Contents folder, open info.plist with a text editor (currently I use Text Wrangler).
    3. Change the value of the Height key from 227 to something larger. I used 558.
    4. Change the value of the Width key from 490 to something larger. I used 980.
    5. Save the changes and close the file.
    6. Use Dashboard to close and reopen the widget.
    The ARD display within the widget is now double the size and far more useful than in its small form.
    If you like this tip please vote for it over at http://www.macosxhints.com
    Another killer ARD widget tip should be appearing there in the next day or 2.
    hth,
    b.

    No Problem.
    Don't forget... you can open multiple, enlarged ARD widgets.
    I have 5 ARD widgets open so I can check 5 different machines by simply pressing F12.
    HTH,
    b.
