Wifi dies from standby

Just got a new laptop -- an HP Pavilion dv6. The hardware setup went extremely smoothly, but I'm having some trouble keeping the wifi up. Whenever you take the laptop out of standby, it will not reconnect to the network -- I can't figure out anything short of a full reboot to get it back up. it just stalls out on 'obtaining IP address' for a while until it eventually fails.

Here's dmesg too if it helps, meant to post that originally. The 'fail to flush' message and 'link not ready' are the only ones that aren't there on boot too, Googling them gave nothing useful when I tried.

  • My Macbook Pro Keeps losing Wifi when awoken from standby

    Hi There,
Please help. My Macbook Pro won't register my home network when I awake it from standby, or sometimes even when I turn it on from being 'off'. It won't connect to the internet or even find my home Network. I know that it is not my router, because my wife is sitting on her windows laptop next to me, fully connected to to our home network. My Iphone also picks up the Network. It's like my Macbook Pro can't even see it. At all....
    Please help...
I am using my phone's personal hotspot tp type this as i still connect to the internet...
    Any advice greatly received....

Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
See KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

    ============================
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
Also, run the Airport Utility app which is located inside the Utilities folder (if using one of Apple's routers.  If using a 3rd party router, contact the vendor and/or read its user manual.

I'm thinking I might as well return the Macbook
You have 14 days from the purchase date to do the above.

  • Mac Mini wakes up from standby automatically

    Hi,
My Mac Mini wakes up from standby automatically. Waking up via network is disabled and I use an Airport Extreme, a USB mouse (not from Apple) and a wireless Apple keyboard. OS X version is 10.5.8.
I have the Mac Mini since about 10 months now. Almost 1 month after I bought it, I had the this problem but thought I am doing something wrong or my wife has forgotten to turn it off
After a while it was OK. About 3 months later it startet waking up by itself again. I called Apple Care (although the 3 months support was over). They tried to help, but there was no progress. It waked up again and again. After about 1 month it was OK again without me having done anything, no installations, no system updates.
One week ago, the Mac found some updates at Apple and installed them. Since then I have again the problem! I contacted again Apple Care and again they could not help. They just want me to pay for an extension of the Apple Care package, although they could not help me in this case!
Now I want to try it myself getting support by people in this forum. I hope there is someone with experience about this case.
I am not much experienced with OS X, but I will try to answer questions that could help me resolve this problem.
BTW, I searched for a similar topic and found one ("My MacMini always wakes up from standby") but in that case the wake up feature is activated by the user. In my case this feature is deactivated, as mentioned above.
    Thanks
    Cheers

    Hi,
sorry for the delay, but I was on a business trip.
@Bsteely: Sometimes it wakes up immediately because of loosing connection to the keaboard when I send it to sleep. I suppose at the beginning of the sleep mode it into sleep mode, the keaboard connection is closed, then the keyboard "thinks" there is a problem and sends a message to the mini and the mini just wakes up again showing that the connection to the keyboard was lost but established again! This even happened as I had unselected the checkbox "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake up this computer" in Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Advanced.
But there are also times when the mini does not wake up so quickly. It just wakes up after hours. I had a look at Console.app as you suggested. Very weird to me indeed Well there I found something like "Wake reason = OHC2" or "Wake reason = OHC1". Unfortunately I cannot find older logs there.
@Boece: Hi and thanks for helping!
Well, I will try the update as soon as I can. By now I have no external harddisk to first save my data before doing the big update. But I am going to buy one soon.
Well turning off the monitor is OK, but the harddisk can wake up anytime while the mini is turned on as the OS might need to do something from time to time. And I don't want my computer to consume electricity even if it is such a small one like the mini. I'm a kind of green dude (but not from Mars ). And the sleep mode is interesting for me as I have very often many different Internet sites and some applications running, so I don't need to close them before turning off and open all of them again when turning on the mini.
Regarding other IR devices: The only IR device now is the keyboard. I even took out the batteries and the mini still woke up over the night!
Thanks again for your support guys. Please let me know if you have any further information of ideas.
    Cheers

  • WiFi Problems after standby

    Hi,
I am having problems with the PB's WiFi connectivity after returning from standby. Even though it appears as connected (full signal) I have to turn the WiFi connection off and on to be able to browse.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

Just to let you know that I have had a solution for the standby/resume probelm from another site.
    FYI below.
However the WiFi Driver and SSL VPN stopping WiFi and WLAN conectivity is still an issue.
    PAUL
    Solution to Standby Resume error.......
    net stop wzcsvc
    sc config wzcsvc start= disabled
Another satisfied customer here!  I updated a couple of days ago to SP3 on my WinXP Pro system.  I had the exact same problem (wzcsvc crash after standby/hibernate) and solution.  What I don't know is if WZC was previously running in my SP2 installation or not, though I have no wireless device installed in this computer and SP3 was one of the only variables to consider.
BUT... I DO have an Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard.  Now, that alone isn't very interesting except they made two flavors of this board: one with a wireless adapter (Deluxe/WiFi) and one without (just Deluxe).  I have the one "without" but if SP3 looked at the system and didn't make that distinction it's possible SP3 decided Wifi was present perhaps based on the BIOS (which is the same for the Wifi and non-Wifi version of the mobo, as I recall) and installed and/or enabled the WZC service!
This bug (in SP3 itself or specifically WZC for failing this way) would be worth noting and fixing because I suspect lots of PCs out there have WiFi capability in the BIOS but possibly not the actual WiFi hardware. I personally hope others I've seen posting about this issue in SP3 find THIS thread useful.  I'm very glad to have standby/hibernation working again!
By the way, of all the svchost processes the one with WZC in it had 30 total services attached to it.  I'm curious why this process is so "overloaded" (if that's an accurate description) versus the other svchot processes which each only have a few services or less attached to them?  Also, when it would fail and restart that svchost process only a handful of them actually came back (less than half!)  I'm curious why that is as well...

  • USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet.  Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50).  After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files.  I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates.
Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work.  My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports.  All exhibit the same behavior.  After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized.  After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again.
I hope there is a solution to this issue.  It is very frustrating.

Thanks for the suggestion about tweaking the "Allow this computer to turn off this device" feature.  I un-checked that box for every entry I could find under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Devide Manager.  Unfortunately, the same symptoms of my problem persisted.
I went back and looked at the README file associated with the BIOS 2.50 download on Lenvo's support site.  At the bottom of the file it gives a "Summary of Changes".  Under version 2.03 of the BIOS (the version just before version 2.50), it says:
    - (Fix) Fixed an issue where USB device might not detected when system resume from sleep mode.
This indicates that Lenovo support was already aware of such issues.  The problem was intended to be fixed in version 2.03 of the BIOS.  However, the issue persists on my machine, even with the latest BIOS.
Hopefully someone from Lenovo can comment here.

Yes, I did try to go on my settings>wifi and was waiting for any wifi signals to pick up, but nothing shows up. But on my PC I get a whole list of networks to choose from. Regarding my neighbor, I already have her password that is why I was able to get it on my PC, the problem is that the mini Ipad is not picking any signal neither can it locate me when I go to maps.

Thanks for the swift reply, I have been looking online and a loose plug seems to be somewhat of an issue with many, I hope mine is actually a problem and not what others are experiencing. It's taken me this long to even reach out for the simple fact I HATE being a complainer but this is just horrible.
Do you have an iPad 3 as well? And is yours not experiencing any issues close to mine?

  • Screen doesn't turn on after resuming from standby- Windows XP

    Hi all,
I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 with Windows XP SP3 (recently installed xp), and my laptop goes to sleep fine, but when I try to wake it up from standby, the computer turns on fine, but the screen does not turn on at all. The hdd LED shows that the hdd is doing something, but the screen does not turn on at all. I've tried pressing keys on the keyboard, moving the mouse but still no luck. So since I cannot get my laptop out of sleep, I have to hold the power button and power the laptop off and then back on again. I do not wish to keep doing this since you can corrupt your hdd by doing this too much.
Any help would be highly appreciated..
    Thankyou,
    From Dean.S

  • Is there any way to prevent a wifi network from becoming known?

    Hi,
I'm on mid 2010 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4 and I can't figure out a way to prevent a certain wifi network from becoming known. My college's network requires an in browser sign up every time and once the network becomes known it gives me an SSL error until I remove it from the list of known networks and refresh. Not too painful, but definitely something I'd like to fix. The only post I could find about this was from 2007, so I wanted to see if anything had changed. Any ideas?

In Network Preferences > Airport > Advanced, do the following:
Delete the network from the saved list of wireless networks
UNcheck "Remember networks this computer has joined"
Also (and this is equally important), every time you join this particular network, be sure to UNcheck "Remember this network" in the sign-on dialog.

Hi, I have a T400. When I wake it up from standby by pressing the Fn key, it wakes up, then automatically goes into standby again. I can still wake it using the Fn key but I am afraid it  might be stuck in a loop.
Any ideas where the bug could be?

    Model: h9-1387
    OS: Windows 8 64-bit
    Monitors: DELL 2407WFPHC x 2
Updated graphics drivers to latest non-beta version.
    Hello,
Since purchasing my PC a few months ago, there has been one "display" problem after another. This is the current problem:
When stepping away from my computer, I lock it via Win+L and shortly after my monitors turn off. When returning a short time later, I attempt to wake up (But not really "wake up"... To try and fix previous display problems, I've already disabled hibernation and sleep options) my computer by moving my mouse. This causes the monitors to exit standby and power up, but all that is dispalyed is black screens when I should have been presented with the login screen.
Mouse and keyboard clicks do nothing and I'm stuck at black screens. To continue, I press my PC's power button which causes the hard drives to spin-up and shortly after the computer turns off. I press the power button again and the computer boots to the login screen where once I enter my password, Windows loads and all my programs etc are displayed as they were before I locked my PC.
You can see previous problems I've had listed below, hopefully they will also help you detect the cause of the current problem.
    Please help.
    Thanks!
    Peter
    Previous problems that I've had:
    1) When waking from hibernation, the computer would not wake monitors from standby leaving no way to login and save work. Hard reboot required. Solution: Disable Windows hibernation features.
    2) Error along the lines of "Display driver failed and have recovered". Possible solution: Disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox.
    3) When waking from standby, I find my 2 monitors have merged into one, and at a different resolution than normal. Once entering password to login, programs that were on seperate monitors are now on the same monitor. Right-clicking the desktop and selecting "Screen Resolution" -> "Detect" would set the monitors back to normal until the problem occurs again. Possible solution: Updated graphics card driver. Not sure if this problem has been fixed, it may have just been covered up by the new problem mentioned above.
    This question was solved.

    Hey peterallcdn,
I'm sorry you're running into this resuming from sleep issue. Sometimes services that are trying to resume can cause issues like this. I would suggest trying a clean boot (booting with only essential system services running) and then seeing if it resumes from sleep properly.
Here are the steps to disable non-critical services:
    1. Windows + Q to bring up Search
    2. Type 'msconfig' and press Enter
    3. Click the Services Tab
    4. Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box
    5. Click the Disable All button
    6. Click Apply and Restart
When you restart Windows should only load essential system services, no 3rd party software. Lock the computer and let it go into sleep mode as you usually do and then try to resume from sleep. Let  me know what the result of that is.
I have seen other cases where Google Talk or antivirus programs will prevent the computer from resuming properly.

  • After 10.4.3 upgrade, problems resuming from standby

I have a Powerbook G3 Pismo 400 MHz with 576 MB RAM. After upgrading to 10.4.3, every time I open the lid to resume from standby, the powerbook freezes, even when no programs are open. It shows the desktop as it was previously, but the mouse will not move, the keys have no effect, etc. This lasts for approximately 25-30 seconds, after which time it becomes responsive again and acts normally.
I've noticed that this occurs if I have the powerbook plugged in to the A/C, but don't have the battery in. If I put the battery in, it doesn't exhibit this problem. I've tried fixing the disk permissions, and reinstalled from the combo update download, but that didn't help.
Has anyone else experienced this, is there a solution, and does Apple monitor this forum for bug reports, or is there another way to submit a bug report?

Thanks Dave; I tried dragging the folders on the CD onto the desktop and they copy okay, and indicate by size they are full. They open on the desktop with all showing in them. So I copied all the CDs I use and re-burned them -- they will now read okay so I do not need to drag files to the desktop first, but can get it right from the CD. Seems like a lot of extra hassle for something that should be very simple to do. ;-} Again, i appreciate your suggestion, and quick response.

  • I've tried everything and still am unable to join my own wifi network from my iPhone 4s

I have an AirPort Extreme running the latest software. I've tried everything and still am unable to join my own wifi network from my iPhone 4s, iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 3G, my girlfriend's iPhone 4. The only devices that will connect to the network are our MacBook Pros and iPads, (1 and 2). I have reset the airport to default settings, I've restored my iPhone, I've even disabled the password. I am still unable to join my open airport extreme wifi network. PLEASE HELP!

Saying you tried everything isn't helpful. Perhaps describing in detail what you've done would allow people to better assist you.
If you're ever experiencing strange problems connecting to any wifi point you can always try resetting your network settings on your iPhone itself. This solves the majority of wifi problems.
To do this go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will clear all of your saved wifi hotspots and passwords, and hopefully solve your issue.
Please try this and respond with your results.

As long as iMessage is enabled and the old phone is connected to a WiFi access point, it will continue to receive iMessage texts. It won't receive non-iMessage texts nor will it receive any calls.

  • White screen when resuming from standby

    Hey,
For about a week when I resume from standby by opening the lid I get a white screen.
I'm using a MacBook Pro 2,7 GHz, Intel Core i7 with 4 GB ram bought in September this year (2011). Fully updated as of today.
Basically, I close the lid of the laptop before I go to sleep and when I open it the next day the screen goes white. So far I have remedied this by pushing the power button which forces the Shut Off options to appear and the white screen is gone.
Is this something I should be concerned about? I've read about the "White Screen of Death."
    Anyone else have this issue?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
    Test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
