Will iPod Charge via USB without.....

Will iPod charge via USB without the computer being on? It was a question I had because if the computer does not need to on... then I can plug it into any computer that has a USB port. I would like to know if the computer is needed to be on... because to be honest, I don't want have to turn on my computer everytime to just charge my iPod.
Right now I am using an old adapter from my previous iPod to charge it... but the problem is me, my mom, and my bro all need to share that charger and tonight, my brother needed the cable to transfer more music but he couldn't because I was using the cable... :-\

Ok... Um... I had an old iPod with the buttons still... not on the click wheel. Back then they came with chargers... so I just use the cord and charger that came with that. But when I got my new 5G I gave my old iPod to my bro... and thats his cord he needs to use for his iPod... to transfer music and what not. I should just buy a new adapter that compatible with the USB Cord, that way me and mom just use that since she has a nano... and my bro can just keep his cord.
Thanks for your response.

  • Palm Centro will not charge via USB or wall charger

My Palm Centro has been having issues with the charger port for a while, now.   I found a few posts on this board instructing me on how to trickle charge through the USB adapter, but when I try the methods these people are using, my phone still will not charge.  I don't have insurance on my device currently (I had to have the ruddy thing replaced so many times they cancelled it), so I have to figure something out soon.  It appears as if the device is not being recognized by computer, even when I try to HotSync.  The HotSync never goes through.  Any suggestions?

Yes, every original iPhone is out of warranty at this point. It is going on 4 years now.
Has the iPhone been exposed to moisture? You can check to see if the sensor at the end of the headphone jack is red or not. Moisture could expand the issue and lead to hardware failures. Could also be a faulty or loose communication cable as the home button and dock connector use the same cable inside the iPhone to connect to the logic board.
Assuming it is a hardware issue you could try third party repair centers that are local or see if apple has an out of warranty replacement program still operating for the original iPhone. Since it is rather old I don't think there is much apple can do. Try a third party repair center or look for a new to you used iPhone.

  • Iphone will not charge via usb-to-computer nor via brick; I've tested with two different cables. Just before this problem arose, I got messages similar to "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone."

Most of my concern is in the subject line. I probably should've saved some content to include here. Allow me to elaborate:
While traveling with the tiny brick, I got a message on my 3GS phone that "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone”; however, the charger was working fine with another phone and with an iPad.
I tested alternatives by removing and re-inserting the cable (obviously, as I tested other devices), changing wall receptacles, shutting the phone off (all the way), all to no avail.
When I got home, I plugged a different cable--one that was connected to my iMac rather than the brick--into the my 3GS; it still didn't charge.
So, I'm hypothesizing that perhaps some debris (from a pocket?) got into the charging receptacle of the 3GS and is disrupting the connection. Perhaps there are other hypotheses.
I am reluctant to do a reset, as (a) the problem doesn't appear to be a software issue (the phone and software are all working, though the charge is declining) and (b) I don't want to lose the contents before I can sync it (now that I'm home, again).
I'd welcome suggestions. Meanwhile, I suppose I shall e-mail photos and notes from the phone to myself before I lose the remaining charge.

Try to clean the 30-pin receiver slot either by blowing air into it or using a microfiber cloth. If the problem persists, based on what you've already said, I'd say the problem is most likely hardware, and would need to be replaced or repaired. I hope your iPhone is still under the 1-Year Manufacturer Warranty, or if applicaable extended warranty. You can check by calling AppleCare National iPhone Technical Support at 1 (800) 694-7466.

  • IPad won't charge using power adapter but will charge via USB

I have an iPad 1 that recently stopped charging using the power adapter. "Broken power adapter or cable" I thought and reached for a spare that I have. That didn't work either. The original power adapter however DID charge another iPad without any problems, so the problem cannot be with the adapter or cable.
Now this is the wierd bit - using the original cable plugged into my laptop I get the usual "Not charging" message but the iPad DOES charge slowly this way.
I rebooted the iPad, restarted it in recovery mode and restored the firmware, cleaned out the 30-pin connector port - all those useful bits of advice that you find on the internet but all to no avail. The iPad just will not charge using any of the many  original Apple iPad charger sthat I have been able to get my hands on but will only charge on an underpowered USB port!
The 30-pin connector must work otherwise it wouldn't charge via USB. Can there be some kind of wierd internal hardware defect that might cause such behavior?
I fear that if I take a 3 year old iPad to the Apple Store they might just give me their best smile and show me the latest iPads but this old iPad works fine otherwise and I don't really want to replace it.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
And this - Unplug the charger from the iPad and then replug. May resume charging.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. In rare instances when using the Camera Connection Kit, you may notice that iPad does not charge after using the Camera Connection Kit. Disconnecting and reconnecting the iPad from the charger will resolve this issue.

  • IPod will only charge using USB

hi, my ipod will not charge using a 110 or 12 volt charger, but will using USB - ideas? i restored and updated it.

If you are referring to the iPod Classic, it will only charge via the dock connector USB cable, either using a PC USB port or iPod wall charger. It also has a built-in safety circuit that will trip if the charging current goes above 1A at 5V.. So most 10W iPad charger will not work on the classic, unless it has a dual output port for lower current.
You can find these dual ports 10W iPad charger on eBay or Amazon.
    Have a nice day!

  • 5G Video iPOD stopped charging via USB: can someone help?

I bought 5G video iPOD last month. After about a month of charging via USB 2.0 port on WinXP desktop, iPOD no longer charges with USB port. If I connect it to desktop, it syncs songs and shows its charging but in fact it does not charge. As it can't sleep, its loosing power. If I hook it up in the night, its discharged in the morning.
I tried to charge it in the car (with car charger), iPOD charges fine. I have tried to change ports, tried different computer (laptop) and also sent iPOD for service, NOTHING HELPS!
I sent it for repair to Apple, but i got it back in 1 week saying its is perfect condition and no other details. (Very disappointed with Apple's lack of service)
Right now, I am stuck with iPOD not charging with any USB port. How do I solve this? Can the usb ports suddenly become low powered from high powered? Please advice.

  • 3G iPhone will only charge by USB connection.

    Hi All
First post so don't give me a hard time.
Kinda advanced user and MD of Technology company. We install iPorts in peoples homes (www.iportmusic.com).
Anyway, all iPod's, iPod Touch's, old iPhones charge from these but the new 3G does not. This is also the case with other docks and car charging kits. is it just my phone or has anyone else come across the same problem.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    all the best
    Scott

Apple has been gradually removing Firewire support for iPods for some time and now with the iPhone. Originally iPods synced and charged via Firewire only. Apple switched to USB for syncing but continued to support charging via Firewire with iPods and the same applied to the first generation iPhone. Apple removed support for charging via Firewire with the iPhone 3G and the same will apply to future iPod models. The firewire pins were removed from the dock connector port.
You need to change your connection or iPorts to support charging via USB if you want it to be compatible with the iPhone 3G and with future iPhone and iPod models.

  • Charging via USB does Mac need to be out of sleep

When I charge via USB I think I read in the manual that the Mac needs not to be in sleep mode for it to charge - is that right? I have my Mac set for sleep at 30 minutes, although this often doesn't work anyway but am in the habit of just hitting a Quickeys key to sleep the computer. I want to make sure I'm charging right so I get the best life out of the batter that's possible.

Yes, that's correct. In sleep mode the USB ports are not powered.

  • IPad will not charge by USB only by plug

My iPad charges fine whiles plugged into mains, but will not charge by USB. It's says its charging when flat but once on it has a message next to the battery bar saying not charging?

Correct, as most computers do not provide sufficient current to charge the iPad properly. It may charge, but it will be very, very slow.
