Will my Microsoft office 2011 work when I upgrade to Mountain lion?

I want to upgrade my Macbook Pro snow leopard (10.6.8) to Mountain Lion, but I am unsure if my Microsoft Office 2011 will work when i upgrade. I do not want to end up buying it again.

Tested, works fine.

  • Problems with Office 2011 for mac after upgrading to Mountain Lion

Office 2011 for mac worked fine with Lion on my MacBook Air.  I had been having some problems with my computer freezing and crashing, so the folks at the Genius Bar wiped my computer clean and installed Mountain Lion for me.
I have full backups (Time Machine) from before the wipe on my external hard drive, but I was told not to restore from the backup, that I should drag and drop files instead.  I was also told to re-install any program for which I had the disk.  I reinstalled Office 2011 via the disk.
    Two major problems followed:
    1.     I lost all my old emails (I use Mail).  Even rebuilding the library or trying to restore them from Time Machine don't get them back.
    2.     Word and Excel don't seem to recognize me anymore.  I can pull up and modify an old document or workbook, but I cannot "save" my changes.  I have to hit "save as." That's a pain, but there's a worse problem.
I have no trouble saving these "save as" versions to my desktop or to my Documents file.  But I cannot save them anywhere else — even to the folder where I found the original document.  I get a message that I don't have the necessary permissions to access or modify the folders. I'm asked to authenticate, and I do, but that doesn't seem to do anything.
I tried Get Info on the workbooks and documents, and I'm clearly granted Read and Write permission.
I've done a permissions repair via Disk Utility.  There were some things to repair, but it didn't solve my problem.
I know I can move all documents to an external hard drive and then recreate all the folders, saving all the documents and workbooks "as" but it seems a huge amount of work.  Can anybody suggest an easier route or how to get my email history?

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  'resetpassword' (without the 's) and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

Will Microsoft Office 2011 work on my Mac?  (OS X Lion)

well considering it's worked on Lion for over a year, I'd say yes.

On my 2008 MacBook I am running 10.6.8 with Microsoft Office 10.1.  Will this version of Office work if  I upgrade to Mountain Lion?

No! Even Office 2004 will not run under Lion and newer. You can check out http://www.libreoffice.org/ and iWorks applications to replace Office.
Check your applications for Mavericks compatibility here:  http://roaringapps.com/
Note: a new version of Office for Mac is expected later this year or early next year. Buying Office 2011 now is buying old software. There will be no credits for older versions. The next version of Office will be subscription. This is the best option I know currently for subscription. This includes a free update to the new version when it's released.

  • Does microsoft office 2011 work with mountain lion?

Was wondering if Microsoft Office 2011 works with Mountain Lion since the 1997 version does not.

Okay, I will try that.  It looks like I have installed it twice already.  An obvious novice. I will do it again though.

does microsoft office 2011 work with lion

...since upgrading from a Macbook pro to a retina pro (with the latest OS) I cannot get Outlook to work, it freezes when I try to add my email accounts info...
The latest OS is 10.8.2. You've posted in the Lion (OS 10.7.x) forum.
...I don't have a clue what can be going wrong, it was all working fine on my macbook pro with Snow Leopard and the same setup is not working with Mountain Lion on the retina, ...The only reason I upgraded from Office 2008 was because I couldn't get it to stop closing down every few seconds with 'a problem'...
Different operating systems canNOT be the "same setup."
In my original installation of Office 2011 on a 2007 MBP with OS 10.6.8, I followed the guidelines Tips for a Successful Install. In launching Outlook 2011 for the first time, it recognized that I had Entourage 2004 and I was chose the option to have all the data transferred to Outlook 2011. While that was well over a year ago, I'm fairly certain that I did not need to manually set up my multitude of existing email accounts. Subsequently, I've added new accounts. A couple of months ago, I got a new mid-2012 MBP (non-retina) with OS 10.7.4. I used Pondini's advice , which I found here in the Apple Support Community for OS 10.7, to setup the new MBP from the old MBP with Setup Assistant. Afterwards, I manually installed my applications. I am certain that I did not need to manually setup any email accounts when I launched Outlook 2011.
That said, if you did not fix the problem that you were experiencing with Office 2008 (and more specifically Entourgage 2008) but migrated that data to your new rMBR, then your problem may lie within the old data. You have not provided information on how you installed Office 2011, if your setup of Outlook is as new or datea ported from Entourage, and what troubleshooting steps you have tried. As Kurt Lang suggested, the Microsoft Community would be best with your specific issues as stated.

  • I currently have Lion, when I upgrade to Mountain Lion, all my apps, music, videos and other files will be erased?

I currently have Lion, when I upgrade to Mountain Lion, all my apps, music, videos and other files will be erased?

Lion dropped application support for PowerPC. An OS may drop or change what to use to open a file, not the file.
Of course CCC is what many have used for 10 yrs now and it is or will be $20 like SuperDuper - commercial.
Always use something like those in addition to or instead of TimeMachine.

  • When I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my iMac, it will no longer allow me to use selected folders from iPhoto to run as my screen saver.  Is there anything I can do to fix that?

When I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my iMac, it will no longer allow me to use selected folders from iPhoto to run as my screen saver.  Is there anything I can do to fix that? Thanks for your help.

Does this involve iPhoto i some way? Seems more like an issue with your web browser.

  • My mobile hotspot no longer works since I upgraded to mountain lion. What happened and how do I get it back?

My mobile hotspot (Samsung Note II)  no longer works since I upgraded to mountain lion (running on MacBook Pro)  What happened and how do I get it back? "
    Keep getting error message:
    "Could not join “NAME-HOTSPOT”.
    A connection timeout occurred"
Please someone help me with this - I do a lot of travelling and use my hotspot!
    Thanks

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wrieless router.
    Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • How do I change my apple id on iPhone4 in iCloud?  In mail, contacts the apple id is correct and matches my new apple id.  I had to change my apple id when I upgraded to Mountain Lion in order to have calendar, contacts and other sync with iCloud.

How do I change my apple id on iPhone4 in settings/iCloud and settings/mail,contacts,calendar?  iCloud does not sync with my iPhone4.   iCloud syncs fine with my iPad and my iPad has the new apple id in settings/iCloud.  I had to change my original apple id when I upgraded to Mountain Lion in order to have iCloud sync.  iCloud does not sync with my iPhone4.  My iPhone4 settings/iCloud shows my original apple id and will not allow me to change it.

To change your iCloud ID you have to delete the account, then sign in with the alternate ID.  Before doing this, if you want to keep your data and move it to the new account, go to Settings>iCloud and turn each of your synced data to Off, and when prompted choose to keep the data on your iPhone.  When everything is turned off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account, the sign back in with your other account ID and turn syncing back on; when prompted, choose merge.
If all your data is already in your other account then you don't need to do this.  Just delete the account from your phone, selected not to keep the data, then sign into the new account, turn on data syncing and if prompted, choose merge.

  • When I create a new mailbox, it does not appear in alphabetial order.  It appears at the bottom and I have to manipulate it to get it in its proper place.  This apparently started when I upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Any ideas?

Do you know why new mailboxes I create do not appear in alphabetical order?  They appear below all other mailboxes and I have to manipulate them into their proper place.  This apparently started when I upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Any help would be much appreciated, as it's annoying and time consuming.

  • Does microsoft office 2011 work well on a mac mini?

I was thinking of buying Pages and Numbers from the App Store but saw that most of the reviews were negative.  Should I just get Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac?

Those Pages v5 reviews are negative for a reason.
If you have to exchange documents in a corporate, or educational setting where MS Office is used, then you probably should create native Word .doc/x content in Office for Mac 2011. Alternatively, you might also look at the free LibreOffice suite. It is far more comprehensive than Pages, and gets the .doc/x export done right.
Office for Mac 2011, or LibreOffice work just fine on a Mac Mini. There are several Microsoft updates available for Office for Mac 2011 — be sure to install them.

  • How do I get MS Office 2011 to install from DVD on Mountain Lion?

I just did a clean install of OS X Mountain Lion from a prepared bootable SD-Card on a new partition of my harddrive and wanted to install Microsoft Office 2011 using the original disc. But after double clicking the installer icon nothing happened besides the rainbow colored spinner showing up and disappearing shortly after and my optical drive making some noise. Activity Monitor indicated that the process of the Installer application doesn't react so I had to force quit it. I tried it multiple times to install MS Office this way using the disc but the problem persisted, also after a reboot.
So far my system is still in a pretty fresh state since I installed hardly any separate apps yet and the most intrusive one of them is probably merely Sophos. OS X's Installer app worked the way it should when I was installing iLife the day before using the Applications Install DVD that came with my Mac.
When I installed Office 2011 the first time, presumably one year ago on another partition on the same Mac which was running OS 10.6, everything worked fine and the same is true for the time when I upgraded to OS 10.7 (although I didn't install Office again, I just kept everything on the same partition).
So is there anyone out there who experienced similiar problems and can please help solve this problem?

Well, that depends on what you mean when you say "verified". But as I wrote in the first post I was able to install iLife from disc on Mountain Lion without much ado. And just now I tested a DVD with some pictures on it and the disc drive would read and display all photos in Preview.
And given the facts that I rarely use my optical drive at all and that my machine is only little more than a year old, a drive failure seems quite unlikely. But thanks for your response anyway!

  • When i upgrade to mountain lion, do i have to back up my computer or will all my stuff still be there after the upgrade?

Sorry i'm a moron, but i just want to know if i were to upgrade to mountain lion do i need to back-up all of my fles or will it just upgrade and transfer over. when i bought my imac i had it come with apps already installed and i dont want to lose them with an upgrade, but i am SO READY for an upgrade. any help or thoughts would be very appreciated..

You need to do both; the upgrade won't itself delete the files, but problems are likely to occur during it, and drives can fail.

  • Will my documents be saved when I upgrade to Mountain Lion OS X?

Hi. I am planning on upgrading to Mountain Lion OS X when it comes out in July. I have all the system and harware requirements. I have never done an upgrade before. Does anyone know: Will my MSword for Mac and iLife programs and everything still be on there? And will all my pictures and documents still be there? Or because of the upgrade will it be a completely new start? I am confused. Please help. Thanks

Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untowards happen during the Upgrade, you will LOSE NOTHING.
