Win 7 Activation in Boot Camp on Mid-2011 Mac Mini?
I bought my wife a new Mid-2011 Mac Mini (2.3 GHz) to replace her older 1.66 GHz Mac Mini. After running all the Apple updates and getting the new Lion Mini set up the way she likes, I downloaded Windows Support software, ran Windows Easy Transfer on the old Mac Mini Win 7, and then ran Boot Camp on the new Lion Mini in preparation to installing Windows 7.
Then I installed Win 7, installed all the Windows updates and had a perfectly fine installation of Windows 7 running. Until I tried to activate Win 7 online. I got the message that I had entered an invalid Product Key. So I entered the Product Key again, but I kept getting the message that the Product Key wasn't correct and that I needed to buy another one.
This stunned me, as I had used the same product key to install Win 7 on my wife's old Mac Mini, which is now out of service. After Googling around for hints, I discovered something that I had missed: In Boot Camp 4.01 in Lion 10.7, a full-install retail version of Win 7 is needed. Aha! I had used the Upgrade version of Win 7 (Family Pack) I bought in late 2009 from Microsoft (I have 3 valid full-install Win XP and Vista licenses). I used the MS-approved double-install method to install Win 7 on the new Mac Mini to avoid the install-then-upgrade waste of time, not even knowing I couldn't install XP or Vista in a Boot Camp 4.01 partition.
I actually have two Win 7 Family Packs, bought in late-2009, and I have 6 valid full-install XP and Vista licenses/discs. Only 4 of those Win 7 installs were actively being used until yesterday, although all 6 have been activated in the past.
So here are my questions: Is the Lion Boot Camp 4.01 requirement of a full-install Win 7 disk causing the activation problem, or do I need to call Microsoft for a manual activation? Will Microsoft refuse to activate a copy of Win 7 Upgrade on my brand-new Lion Mac Mini even if I can provide proof of legal Product Keys?
Thanks for any help, insight, tips. What a complicated mess progress can be!
Solved the problem by using the Windows automated activation via phone. It took me several tries before I gave the right answer about how many computers had been activated with that particular Windows 7 Upgrade family pack Product Key. The magic answer was/is "one", even though I know for a fact that two computers in my household were actively using that Product Key. Go figure.
Anyway, the good news is that you *can* use a Windows 7 Upgrade disk to install Win 7 in Boot Camp 4.01 in Lion on a mid-2011 Mac Mini, despite what Apple says. I'm going to guess that Apple is trying to steer its customers away from just the sort of thing I've gone through. Further good news is that Microsoft doesn't care about the Mac side of the equation at all, just that you can satisfy their phonebot with the right answers. :^)
Thank God Apple not only doesn't use activation for its OS, but also in fact is headed willy nilly in the opposite direction with Lion.

I upgraded RAM to 16gb in my i7 mid 2011 mac mini and it shuts down at night
I have a mid 2011 mac mini i7. Below are the specs on memory, hardware, and solid state. I also have Yosemite installed - everything is current. version 10.10.2
I've had 8gb installed since I bought it. And I just purchased 2 sticks of Crucial RAM 8gbx2.
Everything is fine but when I go to bed and wake in the morning, the system will not wake-up. I have fresh batteries in the keyboard and mouse. The system mini is warm on top - not cold or hot. So it does not seem asleep. I have pressed the button on the mac mini once and thought it was alseep...nothing happens. I just can't get it back up after it seems asleep at night.
The only way I can get the system going again is pulling the power plug. This has happened each night since installing the RAM. Oh, I also have held the power button down for 5 seconds trying to do a hard reset. Nothing
I was really excited to get the system up and running with 16gb but hate trouble. I am not a tech expert....
I have not changed any settings. And if it was asleep, why isn't it waking?
Does anyone have any ideas here?

<Edited By Host>Thank you for your help.
I did both resets you offer in the link above and then I went to bed last night.
In the morning, when I hit the keyboard, it paused and came to light....and said there was a problem and it automatically reset and re-booted from a blank screen (not main screen). This was the screen after the reboot. The full error info is listed below the image.

I'm very tempted by a refurb HP Smartbuy ZR2740w 27" WQHD display, but it doesn't have a HDMI port. It does have DisplayPort.
Since the mid-2011 Mac Mini I have has either HDMI or Thunderbolt to choose from, plus I've just bought an external TB storage system, I think I'd need to connect the monitor to the second TB port on the external TB storage and hope that the external storage would pass the DisplayPort signals along.
I've read that DisplayPort connections are compatible with TB ports on Macs, and that you can daisy chain TB devices.
I don't want to assume those statements hold when I'd need to connect the DisplayPort cable to the 2nd TB port on the external storage.
Anyone know if this will work?
Is it "supported"?
Thanks!
Andrew23. How do I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Thunderbolt-equipped Mac when I have other Thunderbolt devices connected?
When connecting a Mini DisplayPort display or a display using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to a Thunderbolt peripheral (except as described in question 24), make sure the display is connected at the end of the Thunderbolt chain. You can use only one Mini DisplayPort device in the Thunderbolt chain.
Note: Systems with more than one Thunderbolt port, like an iMac, can have more than one Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor connected with a Mini DisplayPort adapter connected as each Thunderbolt port can support one Mini DisplayPort display.
24. Can I connect my Mini DisplayPort monitor or monitor using a Mini DisplayPort adapter to my Apple Thunderbolt Display?
Mini DisplayPort Monitors or Monitors connecting with Mini DisplayPort adapters will not function when connected through a Thunderbolt Display. They must be connected directly to the Thunderbolt port on the computer or to a non-display device as indicated above.

Mid-2011 Mac Mini won't output 2560 x 1600 to my Dell U3014
Hi,
I recently purchased a Dell U3014 30" monitor. I've been using it with my PC via Dual-Link DVI without a hitch.
I decided to plug my mid-2011 Mac Mini into it using a MiniDisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable. My mac recognises the monitor, but won't output at 2560 x 1600, the monitor says it isn't receiving a signal.
If I change the display settings to 1080p the monitor comes to life.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.The specs are:

Well, it seems that you have used Hackintosh to migrate or transfer your system from. These kexts are not present in original MacOs X.
On original Mac these kexts prevents it to enter sleep mode.
Solution is to remove these kexts from System/Library/Extensions or to do clean install. -
Continuity not Working on mid-2011 Mac Mini
Hello.
I can't turn on continuity on my Mac Mini however it should be capable to use this feature.
If I go to System Preferences and then General menu, I can't see such checkbox. See the attached screenshot.
Can someone advise what is the problem?
Thank you in advance,

Mid 2011 Mac MIni Freezing with OSX 10.8.2
My Mid 2011 Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.2 has been Freezing (The baloon spins often) over random things. Is there a scan I can do to check problems. This is my first experience with a Mac and thought they weren't supposed to freeze. I run a few programs at a time but I do have 8g of ram with 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5.
The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting. -
Had anybody tried to boot camp Windows 10 on Mac mini (late 2012)?
I know the support site clearly did not list windows 10. I wonder if any front runner or hobbyist had ever tried it. I am new to mac and need to use the mac to practice X code. I don't have the experience to experiment this boot camp (on windows 10) and also am in fear of messing up my mac mini if I do so.
Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT5634You can also do like I did on my MBP 13 inch from mid 2012, when I removed the Super Drive and put in a SSD and kept the HDD it came with it wouldn't install any Windows when I had two separate drives, the SSD and the HDD. So what I did was doing my own Fusion Drive with them, and after that it went smoothly to install Windows 8.1 using the Bootcamp app that is on your Mac. It is not recommended to use Disk utility to partition for Bootcamp, when having a Fusion Drive.

Boot Camp bug with new Mac Mini?
OK, so I have used Boot Camp now for years, on a variety of Mac platforms, and I have always been able to set it up and run Windows, including Windows 7 64 bit. That is, until I purchased my new Mac Mini i7 (non server version) with the WD 750GB internal, with 8GB ram. As the new models no longer offer a built in SuperDrive, I purchased a Pioneer external Blu-ray drive and have it connected via FireWire 800.
I have a brand new retail Windows 7 64 bit installation disc and have downloaded and burned the Windows 7 drivers to a CD.
I followed the instructions implicitly, but always hang on the reboot that should go into Boot Camp and begin the Window 7 install. Instead, I get the dreaded "Boot disc not found. Please insert a bootable disc and press any key" error, from which there appears to be no return.
Anyone have any ideas or is this just a known bug? This same message was displayed in my MacBook Pro yesterday when I partitioned the HDD, however in my case I hit the "Quit & Install Later" Option as I planned to install win 7 later. When I rebooted my Mac to my surprise it had defaulted to my DVD drive and could not find the disc (obviously, since I wasn't planning to install it). I remember that in SL this issue was not present. Ultimately, I had to hit the option key to boot back into OSX Lion and reset my Macintosh HD as my start up disk via system prefs.
As for your case I would suggest hitting the "option" key during start up and see if your Mac can recognize your Windows 7 disc. If it recognized select it with the keyboard arrow keys and when it is selected hit the "return" key. Then the Win 7 DVD should boot and then follow the instructions of the Windows 7 Installer.
My suggestion is to fill a bug report to Apple via their feedback section:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
As far as I know Bootcamp 4.0 is extremely buggy, yet I do think that OSX Lion overall is a very stable and snappy OS, I noticed that my system performance has not been that much impacted by it very much. My boot times went up by 3-4 seconds longer than SL and shutdown times went up by 1 sec only, as for app launch time they have remained the same. Hopefully further updates to OSX lion will address these and other issues.
Good Luck! -
EFI Update available for mid 2011 Mac Mini
New update available today, check Software Update for the download and follow instructions to update correctly.
And be smart. Backup first and install ONLY the EFI update. Do any other updates separately. Most problems with EFI updates seem to come when people install other updates at the same time. One at a time to be safe, as an EFI update can turn your mini into a brick if it encounters problems.

Simply put, I may occasionally use a handful of high-demand video games on this device. An AMD Radeon HD 6630M w/256MB dedicated is a decent card, but may fall behind on the more demanding games, especially if I keep this system for an extended period of time. And if, sometime in the future, this device still stands but I find I require a more potent graphical source, is it physically possible to upgrade this piece of hardware without irreparably damaging the machine, regardless the methods needed?
I would be more than willing, at that time, to void the warranty if it still stands and perform extensive deconstruction of the device, or have qualified computer repair workers do so for me. I just want to know if it can be done reasonably. I am aware that if this were the Integrated Intel HD graphics 3000 ONLY version, this would be impossible since that system is connected to the motherboard itself. I am hoping this is not a similiar case
Worse case scenario, it turns out to be entirely impossible, and I will either have to look into other possible devices (should the price of SSDs drop soon, the iMac models as of late look encouraging, but only in that lower price scenario) or make the most of the 6630's capabilities, which I honestly doubt will be too terrible.
Before answering in the negative, please attempt to investigate every possibility.Nope, the "Integrated Graphics" aren't really a video card at all.

Can the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter for a 2011 Mac Mini be used with Windows 7?
This question concerns the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter described at the below link:

When running Windows 7 via Boot Camp on a 2011 Mac Mini, can the above adapter be used with a VGA monitor?Thank you for the confirmation, Mr. Peck.

Hi. I have a Mid-2011 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM. I have an SSD installed in it as the primary drive, along with another internal 2TB drive and an external USB 2TB drive for media. This machine is mostly used as a media server and player. It's been running Mountain Lion since I bought it (refurb) last year. I upgraded to 10.8.3 as soon as that came out, and was running for a while without any problems. This evening, though, I started to notice some problems.
The main issue is that the CPU (well, one core) seems to be constantly under load. Under Activity Monitor I'm watching the system load (but not user load) hover between about 8% and 12%, all of the time. But looking at the program list, I don't see anything taking up more than about 2% of CPU, and that is taken up by Activity Monitor itself.
The annoying way that this manifests itself in the UI is that if I'm just randomly moving the cursor around in a circle, I can watch it periodically hang and freeze for about half of a second every 3-4 seconds or so. Meanwhile, everything else on the system also seems to freeze up for about half a second at the same time, which makes watching Netflix extremely irritating. (With Netflix the sound plays as normal, but the video freezes briefly every few seconds - I verified this in both Firefox and Chrome so I doubt it's a browser thing.)
I've already tried some troubleshooting steps myself. (None of this has worked yet.)
I saw a lot of messages in console about "mdworker deny mach-lookup com.apple.ls.boxd", which googling around for led me to this page; per the instructions there I booted into safe mode, waited a bit and rebooted, and now I don't see those messages any more. (I didn't mess with the sandbox.sb file, about which, really? Apple implemented this in Scheme or something?) Just to be on the safe side, though, I disabled Spotlight indexing with sudo mdutil -a -i off.
I opened Disk Util and ran a verify on all three disks, no errors. I found one or two permissions that needed repairing on the startup SSD and repaired them. The problem persisted. I also cleared out my caches with Maintenance while I was at it.
As a side note, even when I rebooted in safe mode, I was still seeing the same behavior (periodic half-second mouse freezes, system CPU averaging a constant 10% or so in Activity Monitor).
I also spent some time reading this other thread which looked like it had some very useful advice (unlike that poster, though, my Spotlight processes aren't crashing). So I went ahead and followed Linc Davis's first set of instructions in that thread. Here's what I've got for steps 1 and 2.
1. Activity monitor
Highest-CPU process is Activity Monitor at about 1-2% CPU
CPU: User 1%, system ~10%, idle ~90%
System memory: Page outs 0, swap used 0 bytes
Disk activity: Reads in/sec 0, Writes out/sec 0 (these infrequently spike up to about 40 or 50 max)
2. System log
I put up a gist for this here. It's my last 50 messages or so, probably some are coming from the most recent reboot. I can see the "IOHIDSystem cursor update overdue. Resending" messages which I presume are linked to my cursor freezes, but nothing else looks obviously suspicious to me. The stuff about "menucracker" is down to MenuMeters; I uninstalled it and rebooted at one point just to check, but it didn't seem to make a difference so I reinstalled it.
As far as kexts go, the only one I had that wasn't Apple was SoundFlower. I actually need that one, I use it to stream files from Plex, but I went ahead and uninstalled it anyways, and it didn't make a difference. My launchd lists start up sickbeard, sabnzbd, and plex, but I've manually quit all of those and the problem persists, so I highly douby any of them are to blame.
Any advice greatly appreciated. Is there a better way that I can see what exactly is causing the high system CPU load, like can I list processes by number of kernel calls or something? I did try top and ps but I didn't see anything obviously different from Activity Monitor in their output.Nope, I don't have a "/Users/charon/Library/Mobile Documents" directory, let alone anything underneath it. Is that like an iCloud thing or something? I tend to avoid the Apple-supplied services when I can (I don't use iTunes either unless I can help it).
As an update, as of about two days later this problem seems to have solved itself. Possibly sleeping and waking did something to it (though that seems unlikely given how many times I rebooted), or else there was just some long-*** kernel process that finally worked itself out. But my system CPU is back down to normal and the cursor freezes are gone.
??? it is a mystery! ???
