Windows 2008 R2 file copy freezing

I have two windows 2008 R2 64  bit servers. I'm trying to copy a large amount of files (over 1000/as little as 500 mg) and at about 30-40% it just hangs. waited overnight a few times but no change. The nic is set to 1 gig full auto and verified that
the port is as well.
Nic is a Broadcom BCM5709c NetXtreme IIGigE.
I have disabled IPV4 large send offload and IPV4 checksum offload.
IPV6 is disabled on the cards already.

How you are copying these files ?  is it normal copy / paste or Robocopy ?
For larger files, You have to user Robocopy as best practice,
Please go through below Robocopy library link and complete your task using Robocopy

  • Windows 2008 R2 File Server - user profiles appear underdirectory C:\user

I've a windows 2008 r2 file server and  few day ago I've noticed that under directory c:\users some user profiles have been created.
These users don't have rdp access to this server and don't use any ts application.
Is this a problem or a normal behavior?

    Hello,
IIRC this is normal behavior as they do a connect to the server to access the shared folders.

  • How to check DFS replication status in windows 2008 r2 file server

    Hi,
I have created File server DFS namespace between 2 windows 2008 R2 server. namespace mode is 2008. I have copied 3 TB data on file server 1. now it is getting replicated from file server 1 to file server 2. till now the data is not fully replicated.
My question is how can I check the status of DFS replication? how will I come to know that the initial replication is completed.

Scorpio. Yes you are right. Microsoft officially says it will not work. My apologies. Thanks for the correction.
Do Ultrasound and Sonar work with DFS Replication?
No. DFS Replication has its own set of monitoring and diagnostics tools. Ultrasound and Sonar are only capable of monitoring FRS.
Is there a way to know the state of replication?
Yes. There are a number of ways to monitor replication:
DFS Replication has a management pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007 that provides proactive monitoring.
DFS Replication has an in-box diagnostic report for the replication backlog, replication efficiency, and the number of files and folders in a given replication group.
Dfsrdiag.exe is a command-line tool that can generate a backlog count or trigger a propagation test. Both show the state of replication. Propagation shows you if files are being replicated to all nodes. Backlog shows you how many files still need to replicate
before two computers are in sync. The backlog count is the number of updates that a replication group member has not processed. On computers running Windows Server 2008 R2, Dfsrdiag.exe can also display the updates that DFS Replication is currently
    replicating.
Scripts can use WMI to collect backlog information—manually or through MOM.

  • LOOOOOONG pauses in Windows Explorer with file copy, rename, new folder, etc.

I am using Windows 7 64-bit pro and I am experiencing horribly long pauses in Windows Explorer on very simple file operations, such as renaming a file, copying a file, creating a new folder, etc. Here is an example:
    1. Open a folder in windows explorer, e.g. My Documents
    2. Select a file
    3. Hit F2 and enter a new name for the file, then hit ENTER to save the name
    4. Windows Explorer now shows the wait cursor and becomes completely unresponsive, sometimes for MINUTES.
This is crazy. I read somewhere it may be due to shell extensions -- another post specifically called out MagicDisc, but I uninstalled that and still have the problem. After a fresh reboot the problem usually is not there immediately, but always comes back eventually.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Lex3001,
I would like to confirm what are the results in Safe Mode and Clean Boot?
I also would like to suggest you run ShellExView again and disable some shell extensions to check the issue.
    Run ShellExView
    =================
    1. Launch ShellExView again and scan the computer.
    2. Press "Ctrl" on the keyboard and click all items which are marked in pink in the list.
    3. Choose "File" then "Disable Selected Items".
    4. Quit and restart the computer to check the Windows Explorer issue again.
    Does it work?
In addition, I also would like to suggest you create a new user account to check the result

  • 790GX-G65 AMD AHCI - Windows 7 file copy freeze

Something very weird is going on with my Windows 7 64-bit Operating System which has just started, and I wanted to see if any of you are experiencing the same issue. The computer has started to freeze when I copy very large files 1GB+ to a USB flash drive, or from one SATA hard drive to another SATA hard drive. About two weeks ago, it would copy fine. Nothing has been installed in between then and now, unless it is Windows Updates.
After having my computer freeze 6+ times, I decided to uninstall the AMD SATA/AHCI driver. I rebooted windows, and now using the generic Microsoft Windows AHCI drivers it copies fine. I reinstalled the AMD Drivers just to see if the drivers had become corrupt, but now it completely freezes using the drivers. The 790GX-G65 motherboard has worked flawlessly for the past four to five months without a problem (using the AMD AHCI drivers). I am concerned it is a Windows Update, but of course it could be a slight possibility that it is the motherboard itself (even though it is only 5 months old). It froze one day for no reason, wouldn't boot up, and eventually started working again.
I did some research, and it seems like others are having this same exact problem, only they were using Nvidia Chipset motherboards. Microsoft even release a hotfix to fix the I/O copy error freeze for Nvidia motherboards.
It is very frustrating that this had started happening within the week, and I don't know the root cause for the drivers to "suddenly" stop working. Have any of you had this problem? Heard of this problem? Or know if it is a common issue?
    Windows 7 64-bit Professional
    790GX-G65 (Bios v4.0)
    AMD Athlon II X2 245
    4GB DDR3 1300 MHz Memory
    1TB WD Caviar Black Edition
    500GB Seagate 7200.12

    Hi Mark,
    Thank you for the suggestions.
I swapped the 460W CoolerMaster PSU for a Corsair GS600 unit with the following specifications:  +3.3V~25A, +5V~25A, +12V~48A (576W), -12V~0.8A, +5Vsb~3A.  I'm using both 24pin JPWR and 4 pin JPWR2 connectors to provide power to the 890GXM-G65/(MS-7642 ver1), as instructed in the documentation, and as previously configured with the CoolerMaster 460W PSU.  I have tried 3 independent power cables, and different power outlets in addition to swapping PSUs.
The system freezes in the same manner, on the same 'Setup is starting...' portion of the Windows 7 installer.  This time, a single, short 'Beep' from the motherboard.  (Same type of beep you'd hear after a successful POST and boot.)  Subsequent retries did not produce any beeps from the motherboard.
I have tried booting various Live CDs in 32bit/64bit flavors and no success.  (Ubuntu 9.04, 9.10, 10.04)  I continue to disable various on-board components and am running with a single PS/2 keyboard plugged into the system for installation, but still no success.
To test the system further, as recommended, I swapped the 1TB Western Digital with a known good 250GB Western Digital unit from another machine.  The drive is detected in the BIOS with no problems, but the installer continues to freeze.  The 250GB drive was taken from an XP based system that is able to read/boot from the drive without issues.
Good suggestions, but I continue to freeze at the same point in the Windows & Ubuntu installers.  If the CPU was somehow damaged, my thought is that the machine itself would fail to POST.  Is that a fair assumption?  Could there be something wrong with the video configuration in the BIOS that is causing the OS to lock when detecting hardware?  I have set the primary adapter to 'Internal', UMA+Sideport, and AUTO for memory settings.
If you or others had any additional suggestions, I'd appreciate the input.  Thanks in advance.

I have tried everything , but nothing help , getting same error
could any one help me regarding this.
    Regards, Triyambak
I have not looked at the other thread mentioned, but usually when this ends up happening, There are several ways to go about it.    One is to map a drive to the UNC path deeper into the folder structure.
    So instead of C:\long\path\that\we\dont\want\files\in
You map a drive.. lets say M:\   to     \\computer\c$\long\path\that\we\dont\want
Now, when you open Explorer to M:\ you've elimintated the length of the path down to M:\files\in which is completely usable.
The other way, is to shorten the names of everything.    For example...
    Folder structure like this:
    Root
    -----Folder1
    -----Folder2
    --------------Folder2A
    -----Folder3
    --------------Folder3A
Rename all the folders to shorten up the path.     Rename Folder1 to '1' Rename Folder2 to '2', Rename folder3 to '3.    Then try to delete.  If it's still too long,  go one folder deeper.   Rename Folder2A to '1'  and
Rename Folder3A to '1' and so on.     Basically keep renaming everything to a single digit character and eventually you'll shrink the path down to where you can shift-delete everything remaining.
    Hope that helps.

  • Windows server 2008 R2 File& Folder Permissions; Ghost Permissions From "Parent Object" Assigned to Folder Owner

Windows 2008 R2 file server: Subfolders of a particular folder have an account that has Full Control permission that are listed as inherited. That account has no permissions in the parent folder. It was, however the account that was used to copy the folders
and their contents in there from another source and was the owner of the folder.
In Advanced Permissions, it shows them as inherited from "Parent Object" as opposed to the folder name of the parent folder (there are some of these.) (The parent folder of the place where the problem occurs does not inherit from _its_ parent)
I removed it as owner and yet the permissions remained. (as displayed either through the GUI or with ICACLS.)
If I make _any_ edit in Advanced Permissions, the 'ghost' permissions then go away (e.g. add my account with full control - I'm domain admin, so have that anyway) This step seems like it should be unnecessary, but it is required in this situation.
I've done this to 5 of about 20 subfolders and it is consistent. Folders which did not have the 'problem account' as their owner did not exhibit this characteristic.
This affects the files within the subfolders as well.
Oddly, adding an owner to a folder has the same effect and required the same edit before the permissions are seen. This was tested on a different drive on the same server.
Is this an anomaly, a bug, or expected performance?

    Hi,
Do you mean that there is an account that has Full Control permission that are listed as inherited but it doesn’t appear in the parent NFS permissions? If so, please try to uncheck the "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" checkbox,
    clicking Apply.
There is a similar thread, please go through it to help troubleshoot this issue:

  • Auditing file share on windows 2008 R2

I think I may need a little handholding here. I have been working with our new Windows 2008 R2 file server. I am having a problem doing some simple file level auditing.
I turned on Audit Object Access in the local policy. The GPO that applies to this server does not have it set and I only really need it enabled on this server. I have it auditing success and Failure.
After I did that I got deluged with Event ID: 5145. I went to each folder and made sure that I had auditing turned off for each folder and file. I did that to see if it would quite down the logs a little. It did not. I am currently getting about 1500 events of 5145 every second. They all say “ A network share object was checked to see whether client can be granted desired access”

  • Upgrading R / 3 4.7 system to ECC6.0 with EHP4 along with windows 2008

    Hi All,
I am looking for your feedback about the plan for upgrading our Landscape to ECC 6. with EHP4 from R/34.7E.
    Current Environment: R/3 4.7X110 with SQL 2000 in 32 bit windows 2003
Planning to upgrade to the level of : ECC6.0 with EHP4 64 bit windows 2008, SQL 2005 Database
Based on the previous experience in upgrade I have planned in the following ways.
Since my basis component is in the level of 63, its possible for me to restore the SQL 2000 database in SQL 2005 (Using System copy tool )
Step 1: Migration of OS / DB using system copy tool (R/3 4.7 with SQL 2005 in 64 bit Windows 2003 ), Then will leave the system for testing for some period and after the confirmation, planned to start the upgrade
Step 2: By meeting all the prerequisites, Planned to upgrade to ECC6.0 with EHP4 on the OS / DB upgraded system.
Step 3: Once the upgrade completed / With the confirmation from the functional and technical consultants, I planned to upgrade the windows 2003 to windows 2008 using system copy tool.
Note: I am not using SQL 2008 - Project decision.
The above mentioned plan is the only way(proper way) for doing such activities or is there any other way to shorten the project.
I should not ask the below question (Even after reading PAM and SAP note 1054740), But kindly regret me for asking this one, out of own curiosity, i am asking the below one.
    1. Is there any possible to install SAP R / 3 4.7 in windows 2008 with 2005 (This will help me to shorten the project). I am completely aware that SAP wont support R/3 4.7 with windows 2008, if its not at all possible is there any other work around for me to shorten? Let me know your suggestions and thoughts
Your valuable inputs will help me to proceed further with the plans (I surfed the SDN and read master guides already) . I really want to make sure , the way which i am going is the right one.
    Thanks and Regards
    Vijay Kumar

    Hi Jitendra,
Hope you should check the PAM again , Its supported for sure and also for upgrading to EHP4 - SQL 2005 is the Prerequiste.
    Hi Abhi and Others,
    Thanks for all your support.
I have successfully completed the project for my landscape and it was a great success too.
As you all said, since I had the hardware availability and time frame as well. Hence, I have tried both the possibilities.
Note :I would prefer and stick with the SAP proposed and supported way and even for my project I have followed the same. So I would recommend to stick with SAP supported one.
But for the own technical interest I have tried the other option as well which is not supported by SAP and also faced some typical issues as well / but solved on my own with some tricks and other activities. So, this option is also possible but highly risked one and of course(more importantly) which is not supported by SAP. So, i would recommend to go with the SAP recommended way.
Thanks for everyone and I am closing the thread
    Regards
    Vijay

  • Windows 2008 r2 server - chkdsk loop - An unspecified error occurred (696e647863686b2e dee)

    Hi,
One of our main windows 2008 r2 file servers (HP Proliant ML350 G6) seems to have a dirty d: drive.
After every reboot, chkdsk runs on drive "d:" and stops with an unspecified error
(696e647863686b2e dee) when checking indexes. After the error it continues to boot and start normally into windows. The d: drive looks ok, but when I run chkdsk in windows the chkdsk runs and stops at the same point without
warning or anything else. The gui stops and exits, period. No message nothing.
When I check the d: drive with "fsutil dirty query d:", the disk is marked as "dirty" ....
The HP advanced Proliant diagnostic tools did not show any problems with the hardisks, I'm running latest HP drivers and firmwares on the server. Last but not least I don't have any special warnings/errors etc in the event viewer.
Here is the output of chkdsk f.ex. in safe mode I did a few hours ago, the output/error is always identical:
    C:\>chkdsk d: /R /F /X
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Volume label is DATA.
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)...
      184832 file records processed.
    File verification completed.
      15624 large file records processed.
      0 bad file records processed.
      0 EA records processed.
      5 reparse records processed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 5)...
10 percent complete. (182686 of 212928 index entries processed)
An unspecified error occurred (696e647863686b2e dee).
As of now, I have disabled the boot-time check on drive d: (with "chkntfs d: /x"), but I would prefer to restore it when the problem is fixed.
I tried a lot of chkdsk and safe mode combinations, nothing helped. I don't have any clues ... so your help is really welcome.
    Thanks a lot!
    KInd regards,
    Didier

    Hi,
There are multiple cause for the issue such as an improper shutdown sequence, or a more serious hardware problem that can indicate a failing drive.
On NTFS volumes, the dirty bit is typically set only if the file system has detected potential corruption. In this case, an event is logged in the System event log. Please check the System event log for more information.
Please refer to this kb article for more and detail information:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322275/en-us
Meanwhile, I am not sure if this is a harddisk issue, so i would suggest you could ask for the HP support.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Windows 2008 R2 folders greyed out

We have a windows 2008 r2 file server and some of our users are seeing some of the folders on our shares greyed out. We have their macbooks linked to the AD domain and the file shares mapped. This just started happening a few weeks ago. our users are running the latest version of OS X with the latest updates.
    Ed

I am not entirely sure what you mean.
But from what I'm surmising is that if all the problems started after installing an update, and there are no GPOs controlling remote desktop properties that are applying to this machine that are controlling the RDP settings (making them grayed out when you
try to alter them on the machine, which is what a GPO would probably do with managed settings, of course depending on the settings), then I would highly suggest and recommend to contact Microsoft support. Support is FREE for Windows update problems.

And since you've asked a question, I would also suggest to change this thread type to a "Question."
    I hope that helps.

  • Slow transfer file speed in Windows 7 SP1, Windows 2008 R2

We have Windows 7 SP 1 and Windows 2008 R2 in both Physical and Virtualization environment. Our network speed is 1 Gbps for Client and 10 Gbps for server infrastructure. We found this
problem in all referred environment and here is the current situation.
    Transfer files from Windows 7 to Server 2008 (Slow < 10 MB/s)
    Transfer files from Windows 2008 to Server 7 (Slow < 10 MB/s)
    Transfer files from Windows 7 to Windows 7 (Slow < 10 MB/s)
Transfer files from Windows 2003 to Server 7 (Normal up to 120 MB/s)
Transfer files from Windows 2008 to Server 7 in Safe Mode with Network (Normal up to 120 MB/s)
Copy File using 3rd software  (Normal up to 120 MB/s) but copy via windows explorer (Slow < 10 MB/s)
We try to do some configuration but it still doesn’t work below.
Command netsh int tcp set global
Update NIC driver vmxnet3 (Virtualization) and Realtek (Physical)
    Disable Firewall
    Disable and Enable network card
Apply hotfix in Kb2675785 and Kb2885974
Apply all Update Windows using Windows update feature
Finally we found strange solution to improve network speed which faster more than 10 times (60 - 150 Mbps) by using one of condition below
Change UNC form using Hostname to IP Address
    Restart DHCP service
Change some NIC hardware configuration or Check and uncheck IP V4 property in NIC configuration (No restart required)
This is an temporary solution for No.1 but in No.2 and No.3 user need administrator right ans after computer is restarted the problem still existing. Do you have any Idea to fix this problem
in long term? Thank you for you help.

    Hi,
The difference should be Windows Server 2003 uses SMB 1.0 protocol:
•SMB 1.0 (or SMB1) – The version used in Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2
•SMB 2.1 ((technically SMB2 version 2.1) – The version used in Windows 7 (or any SP) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (or any SP)
Just for a test, disable the SMB v2 to check if it could make any difference:

  • Windows 2008 Server crashed - How to find location of remote shared files that they used to access on remote web app?

We have a client that was running windows 2008 server.  A previous IT person had setup their system, so we were walking into a situation where there were many unknowns.  Server was mainly handling emails only, and we were able to get their exchange
database off and export PSTs to hosted exchange via microsoft.
Everything went fine with that, however one user said that he used to access files on the server via the remote web app as he described.  He would go to the following url:
    https://mail.theirdomain.com/remote/menu.aspx#
and he would use his login and then he would see several links to folders.  He could then click on those and see his desired files.
We were able to get the server booted again, however we could not find any of the files he described on it at all, leaving me to suspect that perhaps this remote link was accessing another PC.
We have the old server up and running, however the link above is no longer active because we have pointed the domain to the new hosted exchange server.  As I am still learning and my boss wanted me to research this on my own and figure out how to find
out where these files are located.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Just as a note I did try access mail.localhost.com/remote/menu.aspx# on the server but this did not work.  Is there any way in the IIS 7 management console to figure out where this was pointing to?

I figured it out - The server was using sharepoint to host these files.  I browsed localhost:987 and opened the sharepoint site locally on the server.  They had several documents to be exported, however when clicking on Open in Explorer it was
giving an error that local client was not configured.  I installed Desktop Experience and after that was able to open it in Windows Explorer and copy all files off.

  • CF8 (64bit) on Win 2008 Ent - JRun crashes (503 err) when files copied

We have recently upgraded some of these servers to Win 2008 with CF8 64 bit.  On these machines (especially when pushing CFCs over), the machine shows 503 errors until JRUN service is restarted.
We are using a custom script that uses RoboCopy to push files to a number of servers in a web farm.  The script pushes code to both CF7 (Windows 2003) and CF8 (Windows 2003 and Windows 2008) servers.  There are no issues on any of the Windows 2003 servers.  After most deployments, the Windows 2008 servers start throwing 503 errors...
There are no errors listed in the CF or JRUN logs -- or in the Windows Application, System, or Security logs.  The CF logs just 'stop'...
The server is responsive from the console.  Jrun is not using an inordinate amount of memory (~300mb) and the processors are fine (~2%).
The JVM being used is Sun (64bit) 1.6.0_13 (we also have one on 1.6.0_17 as a test); they all present the same issue. We are running CF 8.0.1 (no hotfixes installed).
Has anyone had a similar problem?
    Any ideas would be appreciated...
    Thanks,
    Blake

    Some clarification...
We have tried a number of things - but it looks like this happens most consistently when pushing updates of CFC files that are in heavy use.  A short bit after the updated file is copied to the server - connections start to fail and 503 errors are returned by the CF server.
    CF ADMIN still runs fine.
I think there has to be something locking these files - something specific to Windows 2008; because we use the same deployment scripts on CF8 servers running Windows 2003 and there are no issues...
    Any ideas?

  • Group Policy Preferences File Copy - Access is Denied on 2003 but not 2008 R2

    Hello,
I have created a GPO which copies a file from a network share into a new folder under Program Files. This policy works just fine on a Windows 2008 box, but not on 2003. I've used "psexec -i -s cmd.exe" to verify system account permission to the
share. I am able to successfully browse and copy files from the share as the system account on both boxes.
However, when the GPO attempts to perform the file copy, it does not work, and generates the following error message:
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Group Policy Files
    Event Category: (2)
    Event ID: 4098
    Date: 8/28/2013
    Time: 3:32:12 PM
    User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer: Server01
    Description:
The computer 'file.txt' preference item in the 'TXT File Copy {9176122B-1A50-4AB8-91D9-6E8553727E18}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070005 Access is denied.' This error was suppressed.
I am trying to avoid writing a login script, so I am hoping someone will be able to help me figure out why this works fine on Windows 2008 but not Windows 2003. Please note file names and paths are modified here for security reasons, but the principle is
    the same.
    My GPO is:
    Computer Configuration\Preferences\Windows Settings\Files
    File (Target Path: c:\Program Files\path\to\file\file.txt)
    Source file: \\share\path\to\file\file.txt
    Destination File: c:\program files\path\to\file\file.txt
    Action: Update
Suppress errors on individual file actions: Disabled
    Read-Only: Enabled
    Hidden: Disabled
    Archive: Enabled
Stop Processing items on this extension if an error occurrs on this item: No
Remove this item when it is no longer applied: No
Apply once and do not reapply: No
    Item-level Targeting: None
    Thanks

As a user, I am able to browse the share just fine using the alias. It is only when I try to access the share using the system account that I encounter a problem.
experiencing the exact same symptoms. in the tests below, server, client1, and client2 are all are native instances of microsoft windows server.
    server: windows server 2008 R2 standard SP1
    client1: windows server 2003 standard SP2
    client2: windows server 2008 R2 standard SP1
registry setting "DisableLoopbackCheck": unconfigured on server; unconfigured on client1; unconfigured on client2
registry setting "DisableStrictNameChecking": configured as "1" on server; unconfigured on client1; unconfigured on client2
domain user on client1 attempt to access server by name: success
domain user on client1 attempt to access server by alias: success
domain user on client2 attempt to access server by name: success
domain user on client2 attempt to access server by alias: success
local system on client1 attempt to access server by name: success
local system on client1 attempt to access server by alias: failed (system error 5 has occurred. access is denied.)
local system on client2 attempt to access server by name: success
local system on client2 attempt to access server by alias: success
all tests done using "net view \\target", but similar results were seen when using "dir \\target\share" which the domain user and local system account have access to.
the differing behavior between client1 and client 2 suggests that server 2003 requires additional configuration to allow its local system account to access an SMB share by alias.
this problem prevents group policy features (such as software installation) from an aliased file server.
