Windows 7 Comments

I'm getting ready to purchase a new developer box. I use a number of different applications, Flash CS4, Photoshop CS3, Lightroom 2, Dream Weaver and Firefox 8, plus a number of plug-ing and other applications. Does anyone have personal experience in installing these programs on a Windows 7 box. I'ver read the Adobe Windows 7 information but looking for some personal experience.

Your question is quite broad. I understand your confusion, as I would be in the same exact boat. As this forum is for discussing, well the Adobe Fora, it is not the place. After determining that, I'd look to the various suites, or to some of the major products, within those suites. With the suites, things get very clouded. Back when Adobe did Production Studio, there was a separate forum for that, but most questions actually belonged in the individual product fora, and if one posted to the suite forum, they likely got no traffic. That particular suite forum was done away with, and I can understand why.

How can I read windows comments in a JPEG file on my iMac

I have 120, 000 photos, many with comments added in Windows Explorer, but while they are somewhere in the file data, they are not in ASCII coding so I cannot find any easy way to read them on my iMAC. At the moment I have to use my Windows PC to read the comments while building slide shows on the iMac, which is not ideal.
The Ideal solution would be a patch for Finder so that this data showed in the comments pane of the info window, but I expect that is asking to much.While I am on the subject of Finder, I also miss the ability to sort photos by 'Date Taken' which I cannot see any way to do in Finder.

I found a piece of software called 'Reveal' in a related answer and using that I can see that the Windows Comments and Tags (Mac keywords) are in the EXIF metadata, with Tags 0x9c9c and 0x9c9e respectively. Reveal shows the ASCII values of the characters, and I now remember writing a Visual Basic programme about 15 years ago just for my own amusement that unpacked this data and made it readable. I seem to remember that there were also C++ routines at that time that purported to do the same thing, but I did not have a C++ compiler.
I take your point about the editors, but I am new to the iMAC and still have a lot to learn. I essentially have three new photo editors/organisers (iPhoto, Adobe Lightroom, and Aperture) to learn plus Adobe Photoshop Elements in it's MAC guise, and I am not prepared to use them seriously until I understand what they are doing. In the past I have not found any of the organisers able to cope with the number of pictures that I have - they just go away and huff and puff for hours or days before crashing, if I let them lose on the complete set.

There is no need (or means) to deactivate Lightroom. Just reinstall and reactivate using the serial number you have.

MP3 file comments not shown in iTunes, but are in Windows programs

Ok, am orgaising my music collection. I use iTunes on Mac v7.6, Leopard
There is no comment shown in the itunes for the MP3 files, but if I goto Win XP (boot camp) and either do a list in explorer, or use a program like tag & rename or MonkeyMedia then I can see comments there.
1) why is this
2)how can I get iTunes to show them properly
3) how can I list them in Mac, so I can delete them

Ok so without the file you say you cant tell - how will I be able to check? ie if you had the file(s) how would you check and I will use your procedure.
But if they are windows comments how come Media rage and Musorg see them and not iTunes? In fact if they are "windows" comments how do they how in Media rage and Musorg and not iTunes - i just been thing about that. Surely if they were it wouldnt show up in these.
Also in Media Rage and Musorg, there is only 1 comment field as in iTues but Rage and Musorg show the comment whereas iTunes does not.
Is there an app that can show whats actually embedded into the MP3 file? ie the tag details or something? Windows or Mac to see what is going on?
I will send you a file, but would like to know how I check myself, its bugging me!!!

How do i programattically set a variable's comment?

I am programatically creating variables using PropertyObject.NewSubProperty. I would also like to set the variables window 'comment' to describe what the variable does. I can set the other variable items (Name, Value and Type) but I don't see how to set the Comment.
I am using TestStand 4.1.1.

It might not be a good idea to force it at this point. Windows will notify you when it's ready depending on the configuration of your system.

Can't pin Acrobat X Pro to Start menu

My version of Acrobat is 10.1.0, installed in early July. I find that Pin to Start menu is not listed as an option on either the Acrobat X Pro entry or the Acrobat Distiller X entry in the Programs menu.
With my prior version I had Acrobat pinned to the Start menu. It is an available option for other programs including Adobe Photoshop Elements.
The Properties of the Acrobat X Pro entry say Target type = Application, Target location is blank, Target is Acrobat X Pro grayed out, Start in is blank, Shortcut key = None, Run = Normal window, Comment = blank, Find Target and Change Icon are grayed out, the Advanced Properties box says "Choose the advanced properties you want for this shortcut" and both options are grayed out but "Run in separate memory space" is checked.

I notice that for Elements in the Programs menu, Norton Security is listed in the right-click options, but not for the Acrobat entries.

Dave, since you have been kind enough to try to help, can you tell me how to take advantage of the information that I see above my posting in the Adobe forum? I'm not seing it now as I compose this, but to the right of the dark magenta text that says the question status is still not Answered, there were two icons with notes. One said that there is already 1 correct answer (somewhere in the database I assume) and the other said that there are 2 helpful answers. Neither one of the icons or captions was a live link, so I didn't know what to do with them.

Best way to natively tag photos on OS X

For years, I've been simply taking the native image stored on my iphone and placing them in a chronologic folder (Year > Month > Event)...that was it. No tagging, no renaming photos, no nothing. Then, I was dinking around in Windows 7 and saw how awesome the tagging seemingly was. Simply stated, I don't do ANY photo editing at all. All I'm interested in is tagging photos based on the topics in them (work, dog, house, christmas, etc) so that while I can store the native images as I am now but be able to search my photos based on those topics in them. My biggest thing is to have this be a native function if possible as I don't want to get started and find that in 2 years, I can no longer use it because the third party crapped out on me.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know of the best way to do this?

Trouble is, Spotlight comments are restricted to Macs (they use .ds_store files) and the Windows commenting system you mention in your first post is restricted to Windows. Neither actually "natively tags" the file in an environment-neutral way.
However, EXIF data is actually embedded in image files. You can edit a file's EXIF data from within iPhoto if you want. I do understand what you mean about longevity, but I would honestly prefer to use something like iPhoto's tagging features, which are much more flexible, and make it really easy to tag and smart-group pictures into sets. You don't have to use any of iPhoto's editing features - it does very well on organization alone. If you absolutely don't want to touch your existing folder structure, get Aperture instead, which allows you to keep the organization you've done.

Updater freezes. Shuffle corrupted. Please help.

Before I get started I'll try to be clear on a few things.
UPDATER VERSION IS IRRELEVANT. I've tried with three different versions.
ITUNES VERSION IS IRRELEVANT. This is unrelated to itunes.
Short story: Program problem disallowed safe shuffle removal. It was corrupted as a result. I can't restore the ipod because the updater freezes up.
Longer story: Because of program I tried to run off my shuffle and my schools computer setup, things got messed up and when I tried to eject it it wouldn't let me. So I removed it manually. The shuffle got corrupted and was unreadable.
Seemed like a minor problem since I could easily restore the Ipod. I knew I had lost my files but that wasn't too bad. However the updaters all freeze when the ipod is plugged in or if they start while it's plugged in.
Now instead of just getting an error message when I try to do anything with my ipod the computer seems to be treating it as though it were an empty cd drive or something.
I doubt I can fix things. If I can't can anyone direct me to a replacement form and tell me if I've somehow voided the warranty?

I fixed it myself. The restorer was freezing up but apprently there is a third party one.

Group Policy Shortcuts

I am trying to use the Shortcuts extension in the Computer Configurations section to create some links, but any File System Object shortcuts fail with:
The computer '<Name> preference item in the '<Policy> {GUID}' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070002 The system cannot find the file specified.' This error was suppressed.
For troubleshooting, I tried the following:

None of the "Common" items are configured, so I am not sure what file it is failing to find. Shortcuts fail to be processed on all Windows Servers 2008 RTM systems that the GPO applies to.

No, it should not be an expected behavior that system variables are not set by default. I have verified this on cleanly installed Windows Server 2008 computers.
So, could you let me know the following?
1. Is it a cleanly installed Windows Server 2008 system, or a
2. Did you check system variables immediately after the installation?
3. By the way, the echo command may not be accurate. So, do the shortcut policy settings (with "%WINDOWSDIR% and %SYSTEMDIR%" variables) still work there on your computers?

SPC Chart Usage in xMII

I have requirement to draw spc chart by doing calculation taking the real time data from r/3.
I able to do the calculations and in the last stpe i have to draw the spc chart. The output of calculation is in the form of xacute query.
I selected as the source for the spc chart. It contains two different values one quantity and date.
date should come in x-axis and qunatity should come in y-axis, this is my requirement. Please let me know how to do this.

Suppose u hv some points below LSL/USL, then u can make a "comment" on that specific point that This point lies beyond LSL/USL.
This comment can be made by this following steps:
Step 1 : Select any inspection data point on the SPC Chart
Step 2 : Right-Click, then go to Upper Chart > Comments
Step 3: Then a popup window (Point Comments) comes up, then user click the Add button to get another smaller popup window (Comment Entry) to write a new comment and click the Add button. The comment entry is shown in the table Point Comments as follows. Then click the Close button
When u hv made a comment, u'll see a red colored small icon on the selected point.
Limitations:
Comments can only be made in simple average chart.
When sub-group size equal to 1 (does not work for bigger size)
Comments entered cannot be deleted, will always be visible when the data point is chosen
If u want to see the collection of comments made by different users, then u can get this by going Query Template Editor > New > SQL Query > Server = Quality Portal and Mode = Query. there u'll find an available table named Comments
Now if u want to analyze over all details of the SPC Chart, u can right-click, then go to Data > Summary Statistics

Send for Review

I am trying to test the Send for Review feature in Captivate 4. I am able to send it to myself, open the file, make comments, and then save it. However, when I send it back to myself, it is opening as a Microsoft outlook file, or else just as code. Any ideas on how I can see the comments?

Hi there
When you elected to send it for review, you specified a location for the comments to be placed. After you viewed and saved the file, the comments should just appear in Captivate. But you will need to click Window > Comments in order to see the comments.

Flash CC code editor toggle fields function

PROBLEM:
The action script file does not recall it's closing state on reopening.
ISSUE:
When I come back to my work and work area it should be in the same state in which I left it. It would greatly improve my workflow and reduce setup time if this were the case in CC
DESCRIPTION:
In CS6 if I collapse a block of code - like a large function block - then close the script file and reopen it at a later date - the collapsed fields remember their state and are still collapsed when I reopen. Granted this is only when the same file is opened on the same machine not when opened from the cloud on a remote laptop.
In CC all the folds are expanded (or now "toggled") back to open when the file is reopened. (Side note - Why was it necessary to change the verbiage from "collapse" to "toggle"!?!?!?)
BTW there is a "Toggle All Folds" in the right click menu but it is pretty much useless when using the code editor for a class file since it toggles all fields up to the package statement so clicking it hides all the code.
SOLUTION:
Please someone let me know if this is a preference and if so where to set it in the API

Instead of "Toggle All Folds" - Adobe - please implement "Toggle All Folds Below" or make this selection definable in the preferences panel as well as make the preserve file state on close easier to find or implement the same functionality as CS6

Once you open an script you can see these shortcuts in the edit menu. The Edit\Keyboard Shorcuts Panel has the list of all predefined shorcuts for Flash Pro.

Persistant routes sometimes not working

This is the situation
We have a MSSQL cluster of 2 servers the SQL03A and SQL03B windows 2008 R2 enterprise on vmware 5.5
There are 2 persistant routes, they are for the backup:
10.64.67.171 255.255.255.255 10.37.4.30
10.64.67.169 255.255.255.255 10.37.4.29
Sometimes , one?s a month, the persistant route does not work and the backup wil not work.
We delete the persistant route and we make the persistant route again, than it wil work again.
What could be the problem?

You need to use root print to list the available routes. When the problem gets reproduced again, please run it to see what are the available routes.

Configure Samba Server as per note 680617

Hi,
I am installing Dialog Instance on Windows. CI(ERP 6.0) and DB(Oracle) are in Unix.
As per note 680617INST APPl. Server in Heterogenous SAP System Environment, I am configuring Samba Server.
in that note it has been mentioned as :-
On Unix, release the /usr/sap directory as SAPMNT. ( using SAMBA)
 --> is this to be achieved in writing in config file
 of samba .. if yes where ? need details. 
The user who is performing installation on the windows host as well as the <sapsid>adm and SAPService<SAPSID> Windows users created during the installation must have read and write authorization on this share directory and its subdirectories.
 --> How to achieve this. what we should do on the
 Unix side ?

Samba uses /etc/samba/smb.conf as its configuration file. If you change this configuration file, the changes will not take effect until you restart the Samba daemon with the command service smb restart.
The default configuration file (smb.conf) in Red Hat Linux 8.0 allows users to view their Linux home directories as a Samba share on the Windows machine after they log in using the same username and password. It also shares any printers configured for the Red Hat Linux system as Samba shared printers. In other words, you can attach a printer to your Red Hat Linux system and print to it from the Windows machines on your network.
To specify the Windows workgroup and description string, edit the following lines in your smb.conf file:
workgroup = WORKGROUPNAME
server string = BRIEF COMMENT ABOUT SERVER
Replace WORKGROUPNAME with the name of the Windows workgroup to which this machine should belong. The BRIEF COMMENT ABOUT SERVER is optional and will be the Windows comment about the Samba system.
To create a Samba share directory on your Linux system, add the following section to your smb.conf file (after modifying it to reflect your needs and your system):

writable = yes

create mask = 0765
The above example allows the users tfox and carole to read and write to the directory /home/share, on the Samba server, from a Samba client.
Samba Passwords
In Red Hat Linux 8.0 encrypted passwords are enabled by default because it is more secure. If encrypted passwords are not used, plain text passwords are used, which can be intercepted by someone using a network packet sniffer. It is recommended that encrypted passwords be used.
The Microsoft SMB Protocol originally used plaintext passwords. However, Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or higher require encrypted Samba passwords. To use Samba between a Red Hat Linux system and a system with Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or higher, you can either edit your Windows registry to use plaintext passwords or configure Samba on your Linux system to use encrypted passwords. If you choose to modify your registry, you must do so for all your Windows NT or 2000 machines this is risky and may cause further conflicts.
To configure Samba on your Red Hat Linux system to use encrypted passwords, follow these steps:
 1.
 Create a separate password file for Samba. To create one based on your existing /etc/passwd file, at a shell prompt, type the following command:
 cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/smbpasswd
 If the system uses NIS, type the following command:
 ypcat passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/smbpasswd
 The mksmbpasswd.sh script is installed in your /usr/bin directory with the samba package.
 2.
 Change the permissions of the Samba password file so that only root has read and write permissions:
 chmod 600 /etc/samba/smbpasswd
 3.
 The script does not copy user passwords to the new file. To set each Samba user's password, use the command (replace username with each user's username):
 smbpasswd username
 A Samba user account will not be active until a Samba password is set for it.
 4.
 Encrypted passwords must be enabled in the Samba configuration file. In the file smb.conf, verify that the following lines are not commented out:
 encrypt password = yes
 smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
 5.
 Make sure the smb service is started by typing the command service smb restart at a shell prompt.
 6.
 If you want the smb service to start automatically, use ntsysv, chkconfig, or Services Configuration Tool to enable it at runtime. Refer to Chapter 13 for details.
Tip Tip
Read /usr/share/doc/samba-<version>/docs/htmldocs/ENCRYPTION.html to learn more about encrypted passwords. (replace <version> with the version number of Samba that you have installed).
The pam_smbpass PAM module can be used to sync users' Samba passwords with their system passwords when the passwd command is used. If a user invokes the passwd command, the password he uses to log in to the Red Hat Linux system as well as the password he must provide to connect to a Samba share are changed.
To enable this feature, add the following line to /etc/pam.d/system-auth below the pam_cracklib.so invocation:
password required /lib/security/pam_smbpass.so nullok use_authtok try_first_pass

Im talking about the row of useful buttons that use to sit above the code editing area, like adding / removing comments and checking your code.
Would anyone know how to get them back?
