Windows 7 installation on Toshiba UEFI

Hey all,
I bought a new Toshiba L70-BST2NX1 laptop and I am trying to install Windows 7 (Home Premium 64-bit) on it using UEFI method, not dual boot with Windows 8.1, just Windows 7 all by itself. I got stuck early in the installation process.
Here is what I did:
  *  Disabled Secure Boot in UEFI setup
  *  Removed all partitions from HDD
  *  Began booting from Windows 7 DVD while UEFI is enabled
Having done that, on the screen I see "loading files" text and a white horizontal progress bar. Then the animated Windows startup logo appears with "Starting Windows" text, but then it freezes in the middle of the logo animation. This is where I am stuck.
I certainly want help getting me through the installation but I also have a number of questions.
  *  Does Windows 7 normally support this type of UEFI installation?
  *  If UEFI booting is disabled (CSM) on UEFI-capable machine, what functionality do I give up?
  *  If Windows 7 installation is performed with UEFI boot disabled (CSM), can UEFI booting be enabled again after the installation process is finished?
These are the instructions that Toshiba has, and they say to use CSM booting, but does that mean that UEFI Windows 7 is impossible on UEFI-capable Toshiba machines?
https://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2C03F80002R01.htm

The only benefit that I have read is that - UEFI can support remote diagnostics and repair of computers, even without another operating system.
from this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface
I don't have any other information to offer.
What do you think you are going to miss by changing to CSM?

  • Toshiba S135-S2356 failed recovery Vista - need windows installation disk

    Hi,
My Toshiba S135-S2356 recovery failed. Now it says ' insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer' . I have the Toshiba recovery and Application cd /drivers satelitte a130/a135 series windows vista home basic 32 bit CD but it won't start Window.  It also said something about  winload.exe . What should I do? Thanks

It sounds like your recovery discs may be bad. You might need to order new recovery media or have your laptop serviced.

  • Toshiba provide a WIndows installation disk?

I just went to an excessively LONG -out of the box- restore, that took 20 times longer than a normal Windows installation should of. Does Toshiba offer a windows installation disk or image file compatible with their Windows 7 upgrade disk?
Or would a 32bit Windows Vista image upgrade properly to a 64bit Windows 7 disk?
I have the CD-Keys for both...

    Hi,
sounds interesting, but I dont think that toshiba will do that, because they already give the windows on recovery cd to every machine you buy from them.
So, why should they do that?
Maybe other manufacturer do that, but the quality of their notebooks and computers are probably not so good, so they must give software away, that customers dont return the
computers and buy some better like a toshiba. ;)
So a definitive answer to your question: No they wont.

  • Adding UEFI to a Windows Installation

I am using a different hard drive and Windows installation than what came with my Lenovo laptop. I am only able to boot from it (and also the Windows CD) when I disable UEFI in the BIOS. Is there any way to make my Windows installation bootable while in UEFI mode, as opposed to disabling UEFI completely?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello.
No you can't change an existing Legacy installation to UEFI as a UEFI installation requires your HD to be GPT formatted instead of MBR.
You would need to change your HD to GPT first before you could install Windows in UEFI mode, but there's no way to convert a MBR formatted OS drive without destroying all data on it.

@vintherine: Everything you mentioned in the 1st post is correct. In your case the correct commands should be:
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Thanks. I've tried that, get now a single line with Windows, which does not work
EDIT: Are you able to boot Windows independent of GRUB, ie. directly from the firmware boot menu?
I've tried F12 key, found a menu, started on the HD, found a new menu corresponding with the EFI directories (arch_grub, Microsoft....). Microsoft entry sent me on... grub menu
EDIT: Can you try (note the extra line : "set gfxpayload=keep")
It's time for diner (i'm in France). I'll see this in the next hour.
    Many thanks
Seems like the actual Windows bootmgfw.efi was overwritten by grubx64.efi or something else. In the boot menu Windows's entry (created by Windows installer) is usually titled "Windows Boot Manager".
    EDIT:
Try this. Copy the files from Windows's C:\Windows\Boot\EFI to <EFISYS>/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/ . Overwrite any exisitng files, and make sure <EFISYS>/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/BCD file exists. That is the Windows equivalent of grub.cfg (although BCD cannot be read easily since it is not a text file). Try your menuentry again.

If anyone has any ideas please tell me ...
I set it to boot first from odd
    I used a windows 7 and a widows 8,1 DVD but nothing

yes i could enter boot menu ( i modified the boot priority before trying to instal windows) but i do not remember having an option to switch to UEFi just CSM in the options list.
I managed to install win8.1 after destroying about a dozen dvds and after unpluging the laptop twice the number of dvds (because strangely i couldn't shut it down from the power button) ... installed win from a flash drive ... so far so good ... a little strange at first glance ( first time using win 8 ) ...

  • I can't get Windows installer running

    Hi
    I have build a machine with x79A GD45.
every thing seems to work in bios, but I can't start Windows installation.

There is only a courser in a black screen.
    Can anybody help.

    Quoted from an earlier X79 general informational thread;
"Before the purchase of an Intel i7 3820 for your mainboard, please check the UEFI/BIOS version installed. In most cases, there are green stickers on the BIOS chips with the 'as shipped' version written on them. On my X79A-GD65(8D), there are no green stickers. In that situation, the only option is to contact MSI Tech Support with the serial number so they can check for you what version was shipped on the mainboard.
How do I get my i7 3820 CPU fully supported? The answer is either use a CPU that is supported & flash the version that supports it, take it to a pc shop that can flash for you, or send it to MSI & have them flash it for you. Please keep in mind, if the mainboard is equiped with two BIOS chips, have both flashed".
Since you are fortunate enough to get into the UEFI/BIOS, look in the Settings section, sub-menu System Information to get the installed version Jack has requested.

  • Windows installer not working

I just purchased my Toshiba about a week ago. Everything worked fine but now it won't install anything. I'm not receiving any error messages or anything, it just won't open at all. The problem started yesterday. I downloaded Google Chrome and tried running the file to install it but nothing happens. I've even right clicked and tried running as administrator but still nothing. Windows installer worked perfectly the day before yesterday, as it allowed me to install Silverlight and Adobe flashplayer, but as of yesterday nothing will install.
I also noticed this morning while trying to uninstall a program the same problem happened. The only difference was that about 10 minutes after I tried uninstalling I finally had the Windows Installer box pop up on my screen but then it took 30 minutes or so for the 11 MB program to be uninstalled.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but my computer just made me update my BIOS from 6.5 to 6.6. After my computer restarted and booted back up I tried installing chrome again and windows installer started without a problem.
Maybe the problem was just that my computer wasn't up to date?

  • Missing Windows Installer

I have lost my "Windows Installer" and can't install any file.
I need to install programs, for example (BankID Skerhetsprogram) to be able to have a secure login at ex insurancecompany, my bank and "Apoteket", where I can see prescriptions and such, and it is impossible..
This appeared "over night" 2-3 months ago.
I download the file, the install begins and then it just stops and disappears in thin air..
I don't understand what has happened, if maybe I have been to curious and "disturbed" some settings by mistake..?

    Hello loovis
Nice to have you here in the community.
Please dont be mad at me but I dont know how someone could help you if you dont provide any information about:
Your notebook model, about system you are using, about other tools and utilities you have installed on this notebook.
Furthermore Im sure this isnt an Toshiba notebook problem.
If you cannot install an 3rd party software, you should firstly check this with the software developer.

  • Where do I get a Windows Installation Disc?

My Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop stopped working after only 7 months of use.  I got it from Fry's and they never told me that their 1 year warranty meant I had to ship the computer to Toshiba and have to pay $25 on my credit card and wait 3 weeks or more to get it back.  So, anyways how do I get a Windows Installation Disc?  That is what the error message says I need.

  • Unable to install itunes 10.5 after update issue. "windows installer package error"

So when the update for itunes happened, it wiped my ipod, and then my ipod would not work with itunes. So I uninstalled itunes and tried to reinstall it and it gives me that error message. "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I have tried all the fixes from deleting everything to running command prompts. I think i tried everything.
Method 1: Right click on the setup file and, from the drop down menu, select 'run as administrator'
Method 2: Open command prompt in elevated mode and, then unregistered and re-register Windows Installer.

    6.       After the uninstallation is complete, do not restart your computer if you are prompted to.
    7.       If other program entries were listed for iTunes in Programs and Features remove those as well.
    8.       In Programs and Features, also remove any iPod Updater applications that are listed in the same fashion as you removed iTunes.
Method 6: You may also try downloading the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and run that to remove the leftover ITunes installer files that may be causing issues with your current installation.
