Windows 8.1 client backup fails every time at 1%

I have just added a brand new Win 8.1 client to the network, installed the connector etc. However the SBS backup repeatedly fails at 1%. I have seen similar posts that refer to drive errors, missing partitions etc, but this is a new device.
The log states:
"Windows server client computer backup service received an abort process message from <computername>. Reason: 5"
So the client is doing something to interrupt the backup but I cannot find what '5' means.  When I click the link in the log message it returns 'nothing found'!  I have changed the power settings so the laptop does not sleep but that makes no difference.
It also makes no difference if the backup is initiated from the server dashboard or the client connector.
Any advice appreciated!
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Before going further, would you please let me confirm whether only that new Windows 8.1 client computer encounter
this issue?
Please logon the SBS 2011 and open Dashboard. Then select Computers and Backup tab and navigate to this Windows
8.1 client computer. Please check if the Status of the Windows 8.1 client computer shows as
Online. Did find any Critical or Warning information in Alerts? If click that problematic Windows 8.1 on the Dashboard and select
Start a backup for the computer task, will encounter the same issue?
Meanwhile, please follow the path:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs, then check some relevant backup log files if find more clues.

If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.

  • Backup fails every time and software issue

    Hi

I havent updated the software yet because I am frightned of losing all my stuff and no backup to restore from. Can anyone advise please? Thanks

  • Time Machine Backup  fails every time "Backup could not be completed"

I want to do a new Time Machine Backup on my iMac2007 Snow Leopard 10.6.8 fails every time with message  "Backup could not be completed."
Console says "Error 11" Some Files allways can not be copied/saved by Time Machine,  i search an exclude them in TM not to save them, try again, new ones po up every time.
    Does anyone know a solution?

    One thing which may help.
I had similar issues....a few times.
Have done all the renaming (<8 characters) etc etc as detailed in these forums.
The first time, I erased TC HD and started again. This fixed things for a few days, and then the same issue came back again.
The next time, I simply copied the sparsebundle file (so I had two sparsebundles, one called xxxxxxxx.sparsebundle, and the other called xxxxxxxx copy.sparsebundle (luckily I had room on the HD to do this)). Then I deleted the original sparsebundle, and before I could rename the copy back to the original filename, the image mounted and started backing up....to the sparsebundle with " copy" still in its name.......so I left it be.
A week or so went by, and then I got the same "unable to mount" error message.
Rather than going thru the whole process again, I simply took the " copy" out of the sparesbundle filename, and all was well again.
I continue to get "unable to mount" error messages occasionally, so I simply rename the sparsebundle file (either by adding or removing " copy"), and it seems to resolve the problem, at least for a while.
While not a fix, it seems to be a workaround for me until Apple works out what the issue is, and fixes it.
    Hope this helps someone.
P.S. One word of caution. I just had the thought, while writing this, that I have not actually gone into Time Machine to check that previous backups (eg, one hour ago, one week ago, original backup) are there and are able to be accessed, should the need arise. Because the back-ups appeared to be working, I assumed, and assume, they were. Won't be able to check this for a few days as I am on the road.

  • Backups Fail Every Time

So I am wanting to back up my MacBook to time capsule. I have time capsule all configured and the drive shows up just fine to all of the computers on my network. When I go into time machine preferences, the disc shows up so I add it. Last night I plugged my computer in over ethernet first before doing the first backup. I went to bed and woke up the next morning with an error saying "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while writing to the directory" or something similar to that. The disk image (sparsebundle) was still mounted on my desktop and I am unable to unmount it without restarting. I restarted and tried again and it said it was unable to mount the image. I then deleted the image to start over and also excluded lots of stuff just to see if i can get anything backed up. It creates the image and starts copying stuff over and gives me the same error I got the first time.
What is causing it to fail each time?
    Thanks!

Mine is doing the same thing - it backs up about 50% of the way through, then fails with the same message. It was working for a while, now it's stuck and fails every time, and I haven't found a way to get backups to work again. Prior to this, it had occasional errors while trying to access data, but this is a new behavior. The Time Capsule has been a miserable experience so far...
I've pretty much given up on assuming my data is actually safely backed up with this product.

  • ICloud backup fails every time on ipad3

    Hi
I'm having the same problem with ipad3. Mine hasn't backed up since 7th April!  I've tried automatic backup with charger and screen lock and manual backup. Every time I get the same message "backup couldn't be completed " and back up never. Spoke to apple rep on the phone, tried deleting iCloud  account on iPad and resetting wifi settings. Nothing has worked. Rep was trying to say its my Internet connection which isn't the issue as my upload speed is more than enough! I have been asked to test on anther wifi network which I will try but from what I have seen on the forum it appears to be an issue with the iCloud server that apple won't admit to.
Anyone else having the same problem? It really annoys me when a company doesn't admit there's a problem.

Oh nooooo. last time I updated to 9 I lost all my stuff and apple had to help me out. Only just got all my stuff back- apps etc. They said they coulod only do that the one off. Are you sure ? Thanks

  • Time Machine backup fails every time at around 40GB

Every time I try to back up my older Unibody Macbook, everything seems to go well, until it reaches about 40GB backed up, at which point it shows an error message that just says "Unable to complete the backup, an error occurred while copying files to the backup volume"
My Macbook's hard drive is almost full, I think it only has about 10GB free, could this be the cause of the problem?
Or maybe the cause is the fact that the hard drive is 3.0 even though it says its also compatible with 2.0? Should I maybe try using a hard drive thats 2.0 only?

Try C3  in the 1st linked article.

  • 2008R2 backup - fails every time when scheduled; works every time when run manually

    Hi all
I installed a brand new Dell PowerEdge T310 at the weekend, with a clean install of 2008R2. Roles are .Net IIS, DC, DNS, DHCP. The server has 8GB RAM and a PERC RAID1 array.
I have scheduled the backup (20:30) to do a full backup (C:, system state, bare metal) to external USB drives.
Every day so far the backup has failed, but when I logon to the server and choose to run it manually it always succeeds.
    Event log messages are:
    Event 40961, VSS
ASR Warning: Failed to collect disk information for ASR Backup. Reason:    Unable to obtain disk information for device 1 (Win32 error code 0x2).
    Event 753, Backup
The Block Level Backup Engine service has successfully started.
    Event 561, Backup
The backup operation that started at '‎1601‎-‎01‎-‎01T00:00:00.000000000Z' has failed because no backup storage location could be found. Please confirm that the backup storage location is attached and online, and then rerun the backup
    operation.
    Event 546, Backup
The backup operation attempted at '‎2011‎-‎11‎-‎22T20:30:04.898299200Z' has failed to start, error code '2155348061' (Windows Backup cannot find any of the backup storage locations.). Please review the event details for a solution, and
then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
The server is remote and no-one can possibly be tinkering with (only I have remote access and the office closed for the day four hours ago). But if I remote to the server and run it manually, it runs.
Does anyone have any advice please? I don't really want to be running manually every day :-)
    Many thanks,
    Jim

    Hi,
According to your description, it seems that if you do a schedule backup, it failed,
If you do a manual backup, it would succeed.
I would like to confirm that if it is the same external USB drive destination when
use the schedule backup and the manual backup?
From the error code, you may take the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
To verify that a scheduled backup is enabled:
Open an elevated Command Prompt window. Click
Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, right-click
Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
    At the prompt, type:
    wbadmin enable backup.
If the command output shows a schedule, then a scheduled backup is enabled.
Confirm that the schedule contains the correct parameters.
To verify that a disk used to store backups is online:
For the computer that contains the storage disk, open Disk Management. Click
Start, click Run, and then type: diskmgmt.msc.
    Click
View, click Top, and then click Disk List.
For the disk that contains the volume that you will use to store backups, confirm that the value in the
    Status column is Online.

  • ITunes Backup fails every time

Now that I've waisted around 20 blank DVDs, I'm giving up. I start the backup process which requires 4 DVDs. It usually fails on the first DVD, but I actually got it to 3 DVDs before it crapped out on me. During the backup process, instead of showing the progress, it suddenly says "Insert blank disk", and seems to continue to burn, but it never completes (drive doesn't open) and I cannot get it to continue.
I am beyond angry now. I did a backup 4 months ago with no problems, but now it doesn't seem to want to work any more. Is is just me, or has anyone else had this problem? Please help!

I agree, and I would do that but it wouldn't work in this situation.
My main iTunes library is on my work PC. This is the library where I set up my playlists and synch my iPod to (as this is the computer I'm most often sitting in front of). I have spent considerable time organizing my library and have it set up exactly how I want.
Not only am I backing up the files but I'm also backing up the metadata (playcount, rating, etc). The backup has 2 purposes:
    1. Save my library in case of hard drive failure
    2. Have a copy of my library at home with all the metadata that I've taken around 3 years to get how I want.
On my work machine, I only have 1 drive with 1 partition. My music & library are located in C:\Document and Settings\{username}\My Documents\My Music
On my home machine, I have multiple drives with multiple partitions. Also, I am running Win7. My music is located on this machine in F:\iTunes, and the path C:\Document and Settings\{username}\My Documents\My Music doesn't exist (it would be C:\Users\{username}\My Documents\My Music) and my username is different on my work pc from on my home pc.
So, I could copy all my music to an external drive, and bring it home, and copy it to my home computer. But then I have to create a new iTunes library, import all the songs, and then go through the pain-staking effort of re-creating my metadata. I don't really want to have to go through rating my 2500+ songs again.
I have tried to "trick" iTunes into using the .itl file from my work machine by re-writing all the file paths (using find/replace) but all it did was mess up iTunes. Using the backup/restore built into iTunes does this for me, when it works.
Also, I have to say that your reply was a typical Apple response: Oh, that's broken? Well, that's because you shouldn't use it. We broke it for your own good.
I have my reasons for using optical media. I'm just saying that the process that Apple wrote used to work for me, but now it fails miserably.
What I would really like to see is Apple make the backup/restore method have the option to backup/restore to network locations or external drives. This would be ideal.
Also, more control over what gets backed up would be nice. I don't see why the backup process backs up podcast files. If something were to happen to my hard drive and I wanted to restore my library after 6 months, why would I want the podcasts I downloaded 6 months ago part of what I'm restoring? To me this is a waste of backup space, and I would like to be able to have the option to skip podcasts on backups.

  • Backup fails every time

    Okay
Bought the 1Tb Time Capsule. The net works fine, it loads fine as a network drive on all three macs in our network.
I took the approach of backing up one at a time, so my MBPro was first. I connected with an Ethernet cable and set Time Machine running. It runs about 5Gb an hour transfer which seems incredibly slow.
After about 5 hours it fails, sometimes 6, sometimes 4.
And then it starts all over again.
I've tried different Ethernet cables. I've also tried just using the airport.
    Thoughts anyone?

I should say that the printer sharing works fine too.
And that I've been at this for over a week now. Getting pretty frustrated, my old WD external HD never had an issue with Time Machine, and I bought this to replace an old AEBS and to get the others on our family network to back up...
I'd really appreciate any support you might have.

  • Windows 2008 R2 state backup fails with various errors

Since a few years we are using DPM to backup our servers but since some time the system state of the server where DPM is installed started to fail.
I was trying to do system state backup using command line windows backup:
    wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:C:
and it fails every time with different error (last 5 tries):
    1. Error in backup of C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests\x86_microsoft-windows-w..pdateclient-activex_31bf3856ad364e35_7.6.7600.256_none_09f272fb52ab0c3f.manifest during read: Error [0x80070002] The system cannot find the file specified.

That's a Windows 2008 R2 server with DPM and OM servers installed.
The system state backup was doing fine for 2 or 3 years and suddenly it just stopped.:/

    Hi,
It seems that we cannot use a volume that is included in the backup as a storage location, please backup to another volume to see the result.
You could refer to the article below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • IPhone 5 iOS 7.1.4 Call failed every time when the other person hung up before me

iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.4 says Call failed every time when the other person hung up before me,
Is there anything I can do to about that please?

    Hey there Yonidawit,
It sounds like you are are getting a message saying that the call failed, when the person you are talking to hangs up. I have a few things to recommend here. First close all the open apps:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the phone and test it out again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If that does not resolve it, try resetting your network settings:
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
From: iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
If the issue persists, I would next backup your device to iTunes, and restore it:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Update to 10.5.1.A.0.283 fails every time

Update to 10.5.1.A.0.283 fails every time
It is Xperia Tablet Z SGP321, no branding, no SIM lock.
In the past only Sony original firmware were flashed.
    Currently 10.4.1.B.0.101 is inside.
Update to 10.5.1.A.0.283 using PCC fails on every attempt.
PCC was updated to latest available version.
The whole progress looks like following
    - first PCC carries out the preparation stage
    - than PCC reports to carry out download
    - as soon as progress bar at approx. 50% of whole scale the preparation stage
     is entered again
    - it takes very long time, between 5 and 10 minutes, till the progress bar reaches
    nearly 100%
    - download procedure ends with following message
error code 10, a hint to check firewall settings if PCC and Sony Update Engine
are passed through, a hint to retry later
    - switch off firewall
    - switch off antivirus
    - disable all protection mechanism in Windows EMEA
    - uninstall PCC, reboot, install  PCC of current version again
All the above measures do not help.
One week ago the Sony Support claimed I should retry some time later.
How long do I have to wait for retry? a week, a month, a year, 10 years, 20 years?
It is a big effort to get this device close to the windows desktop device
with PCC installed and running on it, to get connected this device with such windows desktop device,
to invoke PCC and the update procedure. All this effort just to see in the end the update
    does still no succeed!!!!
How long do I have to live with Xperia and obsolete Android on it?

The point of trying a different computer is that it gives information.
If it works you know that your PC is the problem.
If not, you have to look further.
And finally - if nothing works  - you can try to flash it.
My Sony z is working like reborn after a clean install.
It takes some time to learn,  but after that it isn't that difficult.
My tablet works like before KitKat (sd-card) ,  but with the new functions.
    No serious bugs whatsoever anymore.!

  • Export Using Compressor from FCP fails every time

When I try to use the File>Export>Using Compressor command in FC Studio 2, everything seems normal until I submit the batch. But the job fails every time.
I get the following message: "Processing service request error: Final Cut Pro.app generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server".
I've gone through all the discussion stuff on how Compressor needs to be reinstalled and all that. That's not my problem here. Compressor will work fine if I use it standing alone. It's only if I try to use the FCP export that this problem occurs.

Compressor works fine as a stand alone when I import a Quicktime file. However, if I try to export a suquence directly from FCP, it gives me a message "File Error: A file of this name already exists". If I press okay it exports it to Compressor which gives me a message, "Can't preview movie Final Cup Pro App is busy".
Then when I go ahead and load the output settings into compressor ( actual compressor window shows the sequence as being loaded) it starts to render and then it stops with the following message logged
    "Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
    Time Elapsed: 0:00:00
    Time Remaining: 0:00:00
    Percent Complete: 100
Status: Failed - Final Cut Pro.app generated an error or unexpectedly quitUser aborted Media Server"
Any ideas what the problem might be?

Based on the horrible ratings on the App Store (1 star for the current version), I'm not surprised it doesn't work well.
