Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L

Hi!
I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
100% repeatable scenarios:
## Scenario 1 ##
1) Log in
2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
3) Check that it has connected
4) Lock screen (Win+L)
5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
6) Unlock screen (using password)
7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
3) Start copying files from computer to server
4) Lock the screen on computer
5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
6) Unlock screen on the computer
7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.

Same issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.

  • Apple TV 3 drops network connection when it goes to sleep

I updated my Apple TV 3 to software version 7.0 (based on iOS 8) and now every time it goes to sleep it shuts down the network connection.  To wake it up, I either need to use the remote or use an iOS 8 device that supports handoff.  At least I think it does since my iPhone 5s can wake it up, but my iPad 2 cannot.  I believe the Apple TV is now using Bluetooth for connections.   This basically means Airplay with older devices won't work without first waking the Apple TV.  I'm not sure the point of the change since I'm using Ethernet, not Wifi, so there's no reason to "power down".
on a side note, sometimes the iPhone 5s can't wake the Apple TV either.  It usually wakes up when I open the control panel, but not always.  It goes back to sleep when I close the control panel.
Ia there any setting to make it work the way it used to?

    Chenks wrote:

my iphone can still see the appletv (via the airplay icon) when it is asleep.
All you are seeing is the last known Wifi state in iTunes (and similar app in iPhone, iPod, iPad). The AppleTV however has powered down "something" in its own mechanism to conserve power.
For the Apple TV to use such low watts in operation, its got to be powering down something.
I have seen this behaviour before in other devices that try to power down Wifi in a sleep state. It is not connected but it thinks it is. I'm not an expert in Wifi technology so won't state what is happening behind the scenes but do know that re-starting/re-powering up the devices will cause the wifi connections to be re-established.
I would try this but don't have access to my ATV at the moment. Turn off encryption and see if the problem persists. My gut tells me that the WPA/WEP encryption has lost itself in the low power state.
I suspect that 10/100/Gig RJ45 ethernet connections are not affected.

  • Time Capsule keeps dropping network connection

I recently got a Time Capsule to replace a dead external drive and my AirPort Express. I was able to set up the Time Capsule as a router with little trouble but using it as a Time Machine backup drive is driving me crazy. Each time I start a backup the Time Capsule eventually drops my network connection before it can finish. I have about 200GB on my internal drive. Could this be too much to transfer over Wi-Fi?
I never experienced a dropped network connection when I was using the AirPort Express and my second Mac (a G4 iMac) never looses the connection. Any ideas what could be going on here?

Very interesting. Been working this problem from every angle. Noticed two kickers.
    1) Transmission would refresh to fast when opening and closing menu bar airport icon.
    2) Transmission never fades when running iStumbler which is continuously interrogating Time Capsule.
MacPro software seems to be forgetting that it is hooked up and drops out. It is a software thing.
I am starting iStumbler for each session automatically now and am having no drop outs. It is keeping Time Capsules attention. It is not required for all computers in the house but certainly is for the MacPro from which I control everything.
Amazing. Can one of the FanBoys bring this to the attention of the right person at Apple? Also, I need work and have many stories of trouble shooting successes. Tell them to hire me. It would save you guys a lot of time.

After updating my Iphone 4s to os 7.1.1 from 7.1 over the air, my phone went into recovery mode. Yet when I try to restore it with Itunes on my windows 7 laptop it says the network connection has been reset. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network is active, or try again later. My phone has the itunes logo and charger symbol on it, as well as an arrow pointing at the Itunes logo. After holding the sleep button down or even doing the hard reset the same screen comes up on my phone regardless of whether it is plugged in or not to my computer. I have turned my computer off and on again. It is plugged in and charging as it's battery life is very short. I also reset my modem and the same error message pops up. The only option on my computer when my phone is plugged in is to restore it. My firewall also allows Itunes through it. I have literally tried everything I know being someone who knows very little about technology. I also do not want to hear about how the update worked for other people. My phone has been in recovery mode for 5 hours at least now so it will just make me more frustrated if a bunch of people post about how the update worked for them.

Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

Whenever I transfer files via FTP or SSH, my machine looses all network connectivity.  I am using DHCP to obtain my address.  Any Ideas..

I manually configure the card...  the problem is not as prevalent, but it does still exist.  I tried the on-board card as well (via DHCP and manual config) with the same issue.  The problem is really prevalent with DHCP and moderately less with a manual config.  The problem seemed to start after I updated a bunch of packages with Pacman, I can not remember which packages though...  I really was not paying attention when I allowed Pacman to apply the updates.  I sure will be paying attention from now on.

Sorry for presumption that it was wireless connection issues, it might work since the solution involves tweaking or changing power management settings.
However, if does not work you can still look for the solution in that website by entering the problem in the search dialogue box and clicking "search site"

It sounds like you were using your Wi-Fi network from your Airport base station and the connection cut out. You have reset the password on the device but the issue persists. I would try the 3 resets outlined in the following article in order to help resolve the issue. If it persists, is the Wi-Fi connection issue happening on more than one device or computer?

  • XP Mode in Windows7 Professional Drops Network connectivity

Ok - I've seen and followed several (5+) discussions on this problem dating back 4 years through Vista, but no one seems to have posted a definitive question.  I've been rolling out Windows 7 for over a year now and have been following the same procedure
and installing the same apps to the same configuration without issues until this week,  I now have 2 boxes doing the same behaviour.
    Environment:
Workstation is a PowerSpec B634 with Intel motherboard, using onboard RealTec NIC.  Windows 7 Professional, with Microsoft's Virtual XP vhd.  They are connected only via the ethernet NIC (wireless is disabled) on a 1GB connection.  I've moved
the port on the switch they've been connected to and switched both the patch cable at the rack and the ethernet cable at the workstation.  And, as I've said I'm seeing this behaviour on 2 separate boxes.
    Behaviour:
Unit boots flawlessly and I've not seen any connection issues on the Windows7 side of the world (i.e. Outlook isn't reporting disconnects from Exchange and the NIC isn't reporting loss of connection.) However, in the virtual XP side I can launch the virtual
XP, and then start my database application.  It finds the database network share (mapped through the virtual xp as a drive letter to "//tsclient/drive" referencing a share on the host Windows7 machine.  The application runs great up to
10 minutes at which point the connection to the network drops as the database client loses all pointers to it's tables and references and crashes.  If I start a remote desktop session from inside the vitual XP it also will run fine for a while then report
the conenction has been broken.  At no time does the NIC icon in the virtual XP system tray report loss of network connection.
I have turned off all power-saving settings in BIOS, Win7, and as much as I could find in virtual XP - - I'm really at a loss here, especially as I have 15 other machines of very similar specs and identical software installations working just fine, oh, and
yes, I'm running SP1 and have downloaded all available patches.
Hints tips suggestions and/or more questions all very much appreciated.

Thaks for the suggestions - as noted in my original post:
    1) all power management for the NICs (which are integrated on the Intel Motherboard) have been switched off in BIOS, Power Management in both the Win7 host and XP virtual environment, and in Device Manager specific to the NIC I've switched of any power management
options to force them to stay on at full speed/power at all times
    2) I have had this problem now with the computers plugged in to two different "patch to outlet" locations in the office (i.e. different in-wall wiring), plus have used two different wall to PC ethernet cables (which I have also pin verified with a fluke
cable tester) and have used different patch bay to switch cables and have not only switched ports on the switch but have switched to a completely different switch.
With those considerations taken into account I am continuing to see the issue.  The connectivity drop is occurring pretty regularly between 6 and 10 minutes of operation.
    3) sorry, yes, NICs are same model as both towers have same Intel motherboard.

  • Windows 7 No internet Access but network connected

Just installed Win7 which was needed for BF3 as i was previously using XP. All was good until my net has just stopped. the LAN icon on the task bar has the yellow symbol with the "!" mark on it.
ive tried unistalling and reinstalling drivers for my NIC. tried resetting my tcp stack, release/renew, dnsflush. have gone through the forums and tried the Bonjour services fix. nothing works. also tried rolling back restore points, no go.
the pc has 2 drives which i switch between, 1 with xp still and 1 with win 7. the xp drives still works no problem and another pc connecting via wi-fi also works just not Win7.
when running the diagnosting tool it keeps coming up with dns not responding
would love some help. this is BS

OK I found the answer! It is a McAfee bug. Go to
http://mvt.mcafee.com. Run Autofix and update the Def file and your done. Wasted too much time on this. I check the Dell Support and they also had this solution.
    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=576372&l=en&s=dhs
Thanks for posting this! And get this...just yesterday I received an email (from my working laptop) from McAfee titled "Service Notification: Important Update for your PC". Yea, whatever, I'll get to it later. My desktop hadn't connected to the internet
for a couple of days. Tonight I started troubleshooting and couldn't figure it out. I had network access; my router was giving me an IP and my gateway was my router. But I couldn't ping the router and couldn't get to the internet.
Then I searched and thankfully found your post! As soon as I read it was a McAfee bug I remembered that crucial email! Pasted below is a subset of the entire email, with the relevant portion for those of us who can only access the internet after -rebooting

Use this procedure for McAfee Virtual Technician (MVT) to detect and repair the issue. The following steps will repair your product and update your McAfee
    software.
    Run McAfee Virtual Technician (MVT)
    1. Launch your web browser and go to http://mvt.mcafee.com.
    2. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
    NOTE: The message McAfee
Virtual Technician not found means that MVT is not YET installed on your system.
    3. Click Next again.
    4. When you are prompted to save or run the file, click Run.
    Click Run a second time
if prompted by the Windows operating system.
NOTE: Windows Vista and 7 users may be prompted to allow the application to run. Click Yes in
the User Account Control dialog if prompted.
    5. Click I Agree to
    begin the installation.
    6. Click Finish to
    complete the installation.
    7. When the MVT installation completes, click Next to
    run the scan.
    8. If MVT detects issues with your McAfee software, leave the default optionAutoFix and
    click Next.
If there are no issues, MVT will complete on its own.
    9. When MVT and the AutoFix complete, restart your computer.
Ensure the MVT solution worked properly
After your computer restarts please confirm the following:
You should able to access Internet resources by going to familiar web pages.
You should be able to open your McAfee Security software by double-clicking on the M icon in the Windows system tray.
When McAfee SecurityCenter opens, the status bar should be green and state that "Your computer is secure".
While the McAfee SecurityCenter window is still open, you should request and complete an update successfully by doing the following:
    1. Click the Updates drawer.
    2. Click Check for Updates.
    Run a quick scan
After you know that you can access the Internet and your system is protected, perform a quick scan:
    1. Open McAfee SecurityCenter by double-clicking on the M icon
    in the Windows system tray.
    2. Click the Real-Time Scanning drawer.
    3. Click the Scan your PC option.
    4. Click Run a quick scan.
If you still experience issues, continue to the next Resolution.

  • E6 Belle dropping network connection

HI, I got my E6 just before Belle came out and upgraded after waiting a month or so for any issues to become apparent.
Every now and then the network connection lines become broken and I am no longer able to access the internet.  I spent an hour on the phone with network provider (T-mobile in UK), switched the sim into my old phone and it worked fine.  Restarted the phone a few times.  I played with the network settings and changing it from 'dual mode' to 3g or to GSM got it back up and running.  The problem happened again several times and I left it on GSM and didn't have any problems for a while, but now it's happening again and more often.
It happens regardless of location and at no apparent specific intervals.  Assistance would be great, I've been loving the phone and planning to have it for a long time, but I use it for work and need to get email!

VZ can only  "look" as far as their own equipment, meaning they can see whether you are correctly provisioned, supplied, drawing bandwidth, etc.  They cannot see your end of the equipment assembly, of course.
What it sounds like is that one or more  pieces of gear and equipment are not functioning correctly all of the time.  This is often due to poor or faulty connections in the cables, intermittent faults and gaps, etc.   Therefore the first course of action is to check and reset all cables (yes, it's likely that you've already done this, but just for drill, do it once again!).
Having done that, you should devise a test that allows you to insert one piece of gear into the network at a time.  Start with the router and only a single computer, for example.  Wired is probably best at first to see what happens (yes, these tests take time, but there's no way around it).  If that assembly works consistently, try a wireless connection next.  Record the results.
Next I would add back a single STB (of any type) and see if the TV system is OK.  Finally I would add back the remaining devices one at a time and observe the results.  Somewhere along the way you will encounter the offender, but if you do not and if the gear now functions per specification, your time won't have been wasted.  Good luck.
