Windows 8.1 Update and Verizon

How long does Microsoft expect us to wait for the update to arrive on the the phones.  It will almost at this point and be a 1/2 a year since the update has been released and yet no update.  how does Microsoft expect to keep up with Apple or Android if their updates are half a year behind.  And besides that point no new Lumia phone this year I feel like microsoft has given up on the mobile market and i should swithc over to android or apple.

Totally agree with you but pushing the update depends on Verizon's decision.
Which is told unofficially is that some Verizon apps don't work correctly with WP8.1.
IMO that should be a problem of Verizon not Microsoft. Verizon should ask their app coders to change/update their apps and not Microsoft to perform some corrections to WP8.1 OS.
People have discussed about all kinds of conspiracy theories. Here's some of them:
1) Lumia Icon was discontinued because of WP8.1 update issues. If Verizon is not happy with the update and won't release it, they can always claim that they've already retired Lumia Icon. And Lumia 928 is so "old" that they won't provide the update for it anymore,
2) Lumia Icon was discontinued because of the introduction of Lumia 930. It can be purchased by anyone and has more (LTE) frequencies to use it on all carriers' networks,
3) Verizon will earn only small amount of money while dealing with Windows Phones. Android phones and iPhones will make the most of their incomes comparing to Windows Phones. So why waste your bullets on something which is not so profitable.
Well, personally speaking I don't know what is the main reason but maybe it's the combination of all those described above.

  • Old critical problem is actual for Windows 8.1 Update and Windows 10 TP

    Hello,
my app is in the Windows Store 2 years and all 2 years I am getting reviews with 1 stars with complaining about cache size, which can be 10-30Gb... I have reported about this problem to Microsoft Support at October 2013, but problem is not solved in Windows
8.1 Update and it is amazing... I reproduced problem on Windows 10 TP. More details about problem in my old topic https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/ru-RU/0a5d2822-9a3f-48ef-a30e-e8826e76b5b5/critical-problem-still-exists?forum=winappswithcsharp
Big files with size more than 5Mb are stored and are not deleted, so information in last message is not right.
Is it so difficult problem to resolve? Please enable option for Windows store apps co they can delete their cache manually. If problem is not resolved in Windows 10 final release, I will write about it to all major IT magazines, because problem is very critical
and AFFECT ALL APPS from Windows Store.
sorry for my English, thank you.

    Hello,
Keep in mind that the current cache size limit (W8.1) is 95% of free space or 4 GB whatever is smaller. 200 MB is not very large. Do you see the cache reach a size of greater than 4 GB?
    -James
Windows SDK Technologies - Microsoft Developer Services - http://blogs.msdn.com/mediasdkstuff/
yes, my users report about 10-30Gb size, also for my radio app I do not see any reasons to store radio stream cache even 100Mb, because it is absolutely unnecessary. I think 4 Gb for cache on Windows tablets with 32 Gb SSD is too big. Also users think
what it is my trouble that app generates big .dat files, and they think I do not see their reviews and do not do anything to solve problem, it makes me very unhappy.

  • Windows 8.1 update and brightness control

I have a DELL XPS L521X with Windows 8.1 (I had windows 8 some days ago) and I have had two problems:
    1) I did not allow Windows to upgrade to 8.1 and it forced me to do it. It gave me 15 minutes to save progress and do it. I was watching the NBA finals on my computer and it was the only thing I had to watch the game. The installation lasted the whole second
half the game and I WAS NOT ABLE TO WATCH IT DUE TO THIS, YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW I AM FEELING ABOUT NOT USING WINDOWS EVER AGAIN... How can I prevent it from ever upgrading anything without my consent? I had already turned off updates from Control Panel\System
and Security\Windows Update but it didn't help.
    2) My brightness control became broken after the 8.1 update. I had to manually pick the older Intel HD 4000 driver to have it working again or else my eyes would stop functioning after such a bright display. I had to switch to the 9.17 driver version from
September 2012. Where can I get the lastest WORKING version of the driver?
Please stop making me loose days fixing Windows issues...

    Hi,
We have set the GP to disable Windows 8.1 update in Windows store, you can check it here:
How to Disable “Update to Windows 8.1 for Free” Notification in Windows 8 Store?
    http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-update-to-windows-8-1-for-free-notification-in-windows-8-store/
For your second issue, it's not only related to Windows, but also the driver provider. Microsoft is working together with the device manufacturers and partners to deliver update package and try the best to solve the compatible issue and bring a great improvement
on user experience. But you know, it will take some time.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Windows 8.1 Update and the EI.cfg file

    Hi
I have noticed that, installing Windows 8.1 Update Core or Pro with the Multiple Editions MSDN iso, I see, with the slmgr.vbs /dli command, that its distribution channel is Retail. If, however, I add the EI.cfg file
    [Channel]
    Retail
    [VL]
    0
in sources directory of the iso using Windows ADK for Windows 8.1 Update, the distribution channel becomes Volume. How come?
    Where am I wrong?
    Thanks

    Balubeto

Since the Windows Update 8.1 Update (Multiple Editions) MSDN iso includes the retail editions of the Core and Professional, how I should do to change this iso so that, during the installation, allow me to choose which edition to install?
In addition, I would include in this iso my two serial numbers of installation (one for the Core and the other for the Professional) so that I should not insert any serial number during installation.
So, what should I do to reach my goal?
    Thanks

  • Windows live mail 2102 and Verizon yahoo email

    Hello
I have been using Windows live mail and Verizon yahoo together for over a year
I use Windows mail since I do like the Verizon webmail feel and format
These two program have worked fine for me until yesterday
Today we try to access yahoo mail using  Windows  live I get a series of errors .
    These errors include
    1) timeout
    2) wrong password
Last night at the recommendation of VZ tech support I deleted my Live account and created a new one for the same yahoo mail address.   This worked last night as all me server email were downloaded for Windows live.
However this morning when I access Windows love I get the same errors ay yesterday and no new emails since last night
I have deleted my anti virus program to see if this solved the problem , however this had no impact
Per VZ tech support I am using the correct port setting, I have tried alternative port setting  with no luck
I would appreciate any help in fixing this issue
    Thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have had the same experience.  The answer is to disconnect your verizon email from yahoo email and then to setup your email settings as described in a recent announcement from Verizon that was sent to users that do NOT use the Verizon Yahoo servers.
Anthony_VZ provides instructions in the Verizon Community Forum - Verizon.net topic.   I was so disgusted by the time I wasted trying to get support to answer the simple question of what settings I should be using that I was ready to dump Verizon completely.  I was eventually sent to Verizon Premium Support that would answer the question for $14.99 per month with a commitment of 10 months.  I have no idea if the Verizon Yahoo ports are even compatible with Windows Live Mail any more or not (nomal support is not "trained in Windows Live Mail").  How they can make something as straightforward as providing email client settings for a common client so difficult is beyond me.
As you can tell, I am very angry about the time I wasted on this.  Disconnect your Verizon email account from Yahoo and life will be better.  Good Luck.

  • Windows 8. Updates and Upgrade

    Hi.
I am sitting here installing win8. (I got it when it was still 8, upgradeable to 8.1). At the moment it is downloading and installing about 150 updates and there is still the upgrade to 8.1 to come. With possibly more updates.
Is it possible to make an installation disk which has all updates and upgrades incorporated, so if I have to re-install, it will already be upgraded and updated, so the only updates needed would be the updates published after the installation disk was
    made?
    Regards
Ps.  I'm not sure where to publish this, but tools seems a likely choice.  :-)

    Hello Great Dane,
Thank you for posting this query on the TechNet community forums.
From the description I understand you're looking for a way to include updates in your Windows 8.1 installation media, is this correct? Although this is not possible as yet with any official Microsoft tool there are a range of third party options available
to you that allow you to "slipstream" updates, and more, into your Windows 8.1 ISO. You can then burn that customised ISO to disk.
One such tool is WinReducer 8.1:

  • Windows installed an update and now Lightroom 5 keeps showing an error message and then closes.

Windows updated and now  when I try to open Lightroom it gives me a message that says "Lightroom encountered an error when reading it's preview cache and will try again when restarted"  Restarting it does no good at all.

The problem you are experiencing is not related to a Windows update. The preview cache has become corrupted. You need to use Windows Explorer or Finder to open the folder that contains your catalog. Locate the folder that has the extension .lrdata and delete that entire folder. Then start Lightroom as you normally do. Lightroom will be in building a new preview folder and you should be able to continue normally.
I don't know the reason, but quite a few people have experienced this same issue. Take a look at the "more like this" list to the right of this message. It is more common than you might expect.

  • Windows 10 Toshiba updates and compatibility

I got a message this morning from Toshiba Service Station that there were three updates that needed to be downloaded. One was DTS Studio Sound, another was Toshiba Display utility and the last was Toshiba Password utility.  They were dated July 28th, 2015 the day before the windows 10 upgrade. I downloaded the three updates and they started to un zip but at the end of the process they said that not everything was successful and that I had to restart my computer and try again.  I noticed on the update screen it said that I should uninstall Windows 10 in order to install these 3 new Toshiba updates. Has anyone else had this issue? And will Toshiba fix this without uninstalling Windows 10.  Normally I wouldn't worry about Toshiba updates, but I am having problems with my sound and with the password utility, so it does seem to be faulty Toshiba software that is not working with Windows 10.

Hi, fcullision.I have gone about performing the same tasks as you BUT I am only facing one small problem with the Password Utility; it is missing the ,dll file. However, UNLIKE you, I have performed all the updates AFTER installation of Windoww 10. Microsoft ran a compatibility check which indicated that everything about my system was 100% compatibile and I was ready for the update. Even so, the Toshiba Service Station NEVER has indicated there was a task that needed to be performed before (and now after the Windows 10 installation) or since installation. Therefore, I conclude that you CAN perform the necessary installations provided you have updated all required files so the conversion is smooth and flawless.Good luck!Bi-Ill

  • Deskjet F4235 doesn't print after Windows 8.1 update and subsequent updating of HP software

Updated Windows 8.1 software.  Afterwards when I went to print, received a message that the HP software needed to be reinstalled.  Printer still worked at that point--but there were problems.  Couldn't scan from the printer; had to do it from the computer.  When I realized it wouldn't duplex print, I decided to do the reinstallation.  After many screens, etc., the HP printer diagnostics told me that there was a problem it couldn't solve.  I went to HP support, software and drivers; nothing helped there.  Now my printer doesn't work at all.  I have USB.  Can anyone shed light on this?  Thank you so much.  ~J

  • Windows 7 64B update and iTunes clash

have tried several things in Device manager all USB devices look fine .. Win 7 64B sees the removable device correctly as an iPhone/ iPad but  the iTunes .. reinstalled now 3X along with all other Apple s/w  and i have followed all the iTunes troubleshooter advice.. it can not see or sync my IOS devices from within the new Itunes s/w .. am at a loss .. it was fine until I had trouble installing a W7 security update last week and had to "skip" two updates that would NOT install properly upon power down, they are now installed.. but at the same time this knocked out my iTunes sync.. MSE finds no issues.  What could be blocking the USB sync connection?  BTW it did re-sync one time when I went in with MSCONFIG and Hid all microsoft Services then removed all else that normally loads at startup except these MS ones, .. that time Itunes could then see the iPhone device and did back it up and updated it's iPhone IOS to the newest version but with app Sync errors / fail later.. and now iTunes no longer sees any of the IOS devices again.  Please help.. • My computer just updated Windows 7 (23 updates) and rebooted, and since then Firefox will not open.

There are no error messages, it just won't start. It does not show up in the task manager. I have rebooted, I have tried starting from the taskbar, the desktop, and the folder. No luck. I downloded Firefox 5 to see if that would help and the program ran after the update, but once I closed it, it would not start again. Help! I need my bookmarks and cookies!

I had the same problem. I just downloaded firefox again, and that fixed it.

  • Windows 8.1 Update (with WinPE 5.1) ADK + SCCM 2012 R2 and WinXP

    Hello,
I see new ADK version (8.1 Update) is released
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/confirmation.aspx?id=39982
It contains WinPE 5.1 and new USMT (which version?), does it support migration from WinXP to Win7?
    Previously I used USMT5 (instead of 6.3) and modified WinPE 5.0 with bootsect.exe from WinPE 4.0 (from ADK 8.0) on SCCM 2012 R2 CU3.
And can I use ADK 8.1 Update with SCCM 2012 R2?

He does answer your question about the USMT version.
The rest still applies in terms of XP support. See below.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2014/01/09/migrating-from-windows-xp-to-windows-8-1-using-mdt-2013.aspx
Yes, ConfigMgr 2012 R2 is supported.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrteam/archive/2014/04/03/understanding-the-adk-for-windows-8-1-update-and-configmgr-osd.aspx
    Daniel Ratliff | http://www.PotentEngineer.com
    in the article I found:
Windows PE version 5.1 is not needed for Configuration Manager and can actually be problematic if you try to use it. Windows PE 5.0 can continue to be used to deploy Windows 8.1 Update. There is a documented process to upgrade Windows PE to version 5.1,
but this should be considered incompatible with Configuration Manager at this time.
So for a new installation of SCCM 2012 R2 I can install ADK 8.1 update because in contains WinPE 5.0 and option to update to 5.1. And unclear about XP, it seems XP is not supported again.
Also fourth release was in September 2014, but article was posted in April 2014.

  • Windows 8.1 update error 0xc1900101 - 0x40017, Solved?

I got this error 0xc1900101 - 0x40017 when i try to update to windows 8.1.
so i tried updating my drivers, uninstalling, updating, re installing the old version of drivers that came with this laptop and updating and still didn't work.
i thought it might be the some application on this computer that's causing this problem. and i thought avast was causing this problem, because it was not compatible with windows 8 when it came out, and it has kernal driver.
so i uninstalled it and tried to install windows 8.1 update, and guess what? it worked.
but why didn't the windows 8.1 update assistant didn't warn me about this?
    didn't it know about this?
the update assistant said my bluetooth is out of date even though i updated it with the link update manager gave.
it just kept saying update it available even thou i installed it and rebooted my computer.
