Windows automatic update disabled

I removed a Lenovo program thinking it was extraneous and now my automatic update for windows no longer functions. I can't remember the name of the program I discarded but it's absence is sorely felt, any ideas?

I am using Windows xp. I get a message telling me that Window Automatic update is disabled. When I go to System, Automatic updates the setting is checked for automatic but it is "greyed over". If I go to the Windows Update site I get the following messsage
Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed)
To make sure these services are running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply.
8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click Properties.
10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply.
11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button.
When I try to enable the Automatic Backup I get "Error #1058"

  • Windows automatic update disabled HDMI.

I just purchased a new Pavilion 15. For 2 days it worked perfectly hooked up to a TV via the HDMI connection. Last night windows (8.1) did an automatic update and following that it no longer recognizes the HDMI port.
I have read the trouble shooting. I tried recovering the drivers but gave up after half the day was wasted on no progress.
I called tech support and was not given a simple answer either.
Is there a simple and quick solution?
The Best Buy I purchased it from is less than 5 minutes away from me and will refund it as it's only a few days old. Is that my quickest solution?

Hello! The solution to this was already given at http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/HDMI-output-not-working-after-Windows-8-1-up...
    I hope this helps!

  • Raid building tip - Turn off Windows "Automatic update"

If you are running Windows and are in the software configuration setup stage of  creating your raid, make sure you have windows update NOT set to automatic.
Otherwise during your long raid building stage (in my case it took almost an entire day when I configured my raid back in June) Windows could download an update and automatically install it and keep warning you that it will reboot in "so many " minutes unless you tell it to delay rebooting.  As you know, it will keep bugging your that it about to reboot over and over again.
Fortunately I have automatic updates turned OFF on my editing machine so I have no surprise rebooting.
Since automatic update can be complety silent, you might go to bed expecting to see your raid finished in the morning, only to be surprised to find that your computer rebooted sometime during the night -- and  your raid not completed.
    Rowby

Raid rebuilding will continue after a reboot. Restarting the system will not stop a rebuild from continuing.

  • Windows Automatic Updates

I'm trying to access the automatic updates console on server 2012 and Im not finding anything. I try searching just update and finds nothing. Google not showing much apart from wsus and GPO's which is not what Im after. is there a way to access the updates
console, I take it I most likely got to install a feature or something or is it wsus only?

Are you referring to the windows updates settings? You say not WSUS, so i'm assuming this is the case.
If you're other colleagues are able to get to it and you're not, do you receive any error messages? What is the behavior?

  • X220 Windows Automatic Updates Keep Disabling

We have 2 new Thinkpad X220's, both running Win 7 Pro, and they both have this same problem.  We have Windows Update set to 'Install Updates Automatically'.  Every 30 minutes or so, that setting gets disabled to 'Never Check for Updates'.
I've run scans for malware and viruses but both systems appear to be clean.
Any help would really be appreciated.

If you don't think its a being caused by malware, try re-installing Windows update agent. (or) you can use the built in Diagnostics of Windows 7 to resolve your issue.
Go to Control Panel--> System and Security--> Troubleshoot common computer problems(Under Action center) -->Fix problem with Windows update.
The agent may figure out what went wrong and may give you suggestions or reslve your issue. I hope this heps

  • I upgraded to Mavericks and automatic updates disabled printer wifi connection

I upgraded to Mavericks and purchased new HP OfficeJet Pro 8100 printer with wireless connection.  Has been working fine until today my system downloaded a bunch of upgrades automatically: I didn't know how to stop the automatic downloads (I was accustomed to deciding which ones I wanted in SnowLeopard!)  but it downloaded all of them and I don't know which ones to trash and I REALLY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DISINSTALL ANY OF THEM! I am really in a quandary and about to throw the new printer and anyone else I can find out the window~
Here is list of automatic downloads:
OS X NTP Security Update; Security Update 2014-005v. 1.0; Safari v.7.1.2./ Remote Desktop Client Update v.3.7.1/ OS X Update Combined 10.9.5/ iTunes v. 12.0.1/ iBooks Update v. 1.0.1/ HP Printer Software v.3
Now the printer won't connect to Wifi (nor with USB cable)... It was working fine yesterday. I read that some updates block connections but have no idea what to do now???
    HELP

Have you tried removing the HP from Printers & Scanners and then adding it back again to see if this will let you print?
You could also try a reset of the printing system. Note that this action will remove all devices from the Printers & Scanners preference pane thus requiring you to add them back again. To reset, open Printers & Scanners and right click in the section where your printers are listed, A small pop-up menu will appear. Select it and confirm that you want to reset and then enter your admin password when prompted.

  • Clients Windows automatic update is not working after configured EndPoint 2012

I have all my client machines to look for Windows update automatically from the internet. After I configured my SCCM 2012 to have EndPoint 2012 Protection and all clients to sync to the SCCM server for new definitions. Now all client machines are
checking for Windows updates on my SCCM server as well.
    1. How can I have my client machines to still check for Windows update from the internet WHILE synching AV definition from SCCM server?
    THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.

I don't believe it's possible to do what you wish. Have a look at the local policy on one of your clients (gpedit.msc).
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Updates > Specify intranet Microsoft update service location
Does it specify your Primary Site server?
Endpoint Protection leverages the software update component of ConfigMgr for delivery of definitions. This local Windows Updates policy was created when you configured this component.

  • Windows Automatic Update Error 80072EFD - After new HD installation by Toshiba

    Hi,
The hard drive went in my computer and I got it repaired at Toshiba Service centre. Four weeks later and it wont update windows which now causes web site security certificate errors with itunes, banks and paying for items on the web. I have called Toshiba and told them when I got it back it doesn't work correctly and they say its not there problem! Windows worked fine before the hard drive re-install.
I have tried nearly every suggestion on windows forums out there and tried to install the windows fix it tool but it wont let me on my laptop. I have also tried installing the Intel driver that people recommend but that also doesn't work. I have malware scanned the system as suggested by Microsoft it still wont work.
I keep getting windows error code 80072ED. The only thing i havent done which was suggested by toshiba was do a re-install by holding 0 key when rebooting the computer but I dont want to lose my hard drive and wipe it all. Im using windows 7 home premium. Somebody please help.
    Thanks

the old hard drive was removed and a new hard drive installed and the computer re configured to out of the box state. I dont think the windows update has worked since I got it back from Toshiba.
If it's just back from the Toshiba shop and doesn't work right before making changes, you should return it.
That error code indicates a network configuration problem. Do you have other problems on the internet?\
Do you have more than one anti-virus program resident in memory?

  • FIngerprint reader stopped working after windows automatic updates

    Hi,
I recently purchased an Envy j109tx laptop.
From day one the finger print scanner was not working.
After updating hp simplepass it started to work.
Again today I installed some windows update. After that it stopped working.
The light in the fingerprint reader is not turning on.
Is there a fix for this?
    Someone please help me.
    Thanks in advance.

    @naga5speed ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  First thing did you do the windows update due to your system having some issue?
If not then do a system restore back before the update.
It is probably some microsoft update that is conflicting with the driver.
It is good to keep your system up to date.  But it is better to make sure before you run an update that you take a look as to why you are updating.
Do I need to fix an issue?
If i do not do the update will something stop working?
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
If this fails to work then you may have to back up your data and run a system recovery.  The reason for this is what ever update you ran has made changes to system files or the registry that a restore will not fix.

  • Disabling Java Web Start Automatic Updates

    Hi,
my manager is a bit concerned about JWS automatically updating itself.
It doesn't bother me as much as, say, Windows automatically updating itself,
but what if Sun inadvertently adds a serious bug which stops my app working?
It would be nice to be able to choose whether or not JWS does this, and to be able to
manually check for updates, in the Application manager.
Anyone else here share this thought?
    rgds,
    Matthew Harrison

Java Web Start does not ever auato update itself, only the applications that are launched with it.
Starting with Java 1.4.2_01 The Java Runtime Enviornment itself began containing the ability to auto update itself, but :
1.) If 1.4.2_01 auto-updates to 1.4.2_05, both versions remain available on the machine, (and a webstart app can specify either the exact version it wants, or a range ov versions)
2.) The update policy can be set by each user thru the Control Panel, and the default is to prompt the user before installing.

It is by design. MS wants it that way.

  • Laptop gone mute after windows vista automatic update

    Hi board members
Im currently using an old 5 year old HP pavillion dv6- 1160ei notebook running windows vista home edition 32 bit .My notebook went mute after latest windows automatic update  requiring a restart .  Now im not having any sound at all , no windows sound , VLC media player can run mp3 files but no sound , videos are mute too . windows media player is giving me an error message , cannot video call on skype too , giving me a message ' no playback device'  . Games are mute too
windows dont have any starting sound .  device manager showing everything is fine .

problem solved , followed David's advice on a previous thread , thank you David for the help
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59501-60000/sp59542.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio
wish it work for the others too

  • Why won't Windows XP automatic updates work after installing new ITunes

After installing the new 11.1 Itunes, Windows automatic updates fail to install any new updates.
The last time this happened was when I last updated Itunes. I can't remember how I fixed it but I had to go into the apple software and fix something.

  • Stop Skype Automatic Update

I know there have already been threads for this, but I've looked, tried many solutions, and today skype once again downgraded itself to a newer version without my consent. Here are the steps I've taken to stop automatic updates:
    - Disable automatic updates within skype options
    - Disable Skype Updater services in services.msc
    - Block 'download.skype.com' in my hosts file
    - Delete any skype files in %temp%
After skype downgraded itself once again this morning (it does this every day now), the settings in skype options and services.msc had been reset, and there were more files in %temp% again. download.skype.com is still blocked in my hosts file, so I have no idea how it managed to downgrade itself this time. Did they change the download location since the old threads I've been reading were written?

Skype is now also updated by Windows Updates.

  • Allow users to manage and change Automatic Update settings

    Server SBS 2011 SP 1
Couldn't find a thread that helped. Hoping to get some light on my situation.
The client has users who they'd like to have full control of their client PCs Windows Automatic Updates. The users would like to go into Control Panel and check updates at will, set times for auto updates to their liking. I haven't found the appropriate
GPO setting to allow users to change update settings.
Is that possible? Will creating an OU without a linked GPO and blocking inheritance provide the answer?
    Thanks ALL!

the dedicated SBS forums might bet better for your question (since SBS can be finicky about some settings)
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?category=sbsserver
It will likely depend upon how the implementation is currently setup (there could be various things in place, in a customised fashion).
Basically, when using GPO to deploy WUAgent settings for WSUS, the user interface for WU is disabled for the end-user - this is how classic domain GP works, and is intended to work. (i.e. if the domain admin deploys a setting, end-users are unable to change
    that)
You may be able to easily identify the relevant domain GPO that is delivering this setting, but you would (presumably) want to only change the single setting relating to AUOptions, and leave the other settings as they currently are (i.e. continue to use
WSUS to serve the update approvals and update files/patches.
Creating a new OU and not linking/inheriting, may cause other unintended effects/complexity.
(it might be the only way to achieve your goal, but analysing which GPOs are carrying which settings, and then which GPOs you *do* need to be linked/inherited, will be an important step)
