Windows reports one size for jpg, Photoshop says it's something else

This has baffled me for years and I've always meant to pop the question to experts.
So here goes. (WinXPPSP3, CS5)
If I pick a jpg (taken with my camera, say) at random on my hard drive, and go View > Details, the SIZE column will say (for example) 3,059KB.
If I mouseover it in the NAME column, it says 2848 x 2136 - Size 2.98MB.
If I right-click it and check the properties it says Size: 3,131,411. Size on disk: 3,133,440.
OK, I'm comfortable with all that and I know that the disparity in properties is caused by cluster use. So all that is OK.
But if I open Photoshop CS5 then browse to and open the same pic, then go Image Size, it tells me the image is 17.4MB.
This in spite of the Pixel Size being the same as above, ie, 2848 x 2136.
The other dimensions in PShop's boxes are: Width - 100.47cm, Height - 75.35cm, 72 pixels\inch.
Scale..,Constrain..., Resample...boxes are all checked. (Bicubic)
(Image Mode is RGB, 8 Bits)
Could some kind person explain what's happening here?

Donald Reese, thanks. So you're saying that Windows' assessment of a jpg is always correct, then?
In that case, let's say I open my example pic in Photoshop (2.98MB jpg which unpacks to 17.4MB)
If I make a bunch of changes to that image, like size, density etc etc), as long as Image Size still shows an overall size of 17.4MB, when I save it as a jpg, it'll go back to 2.98MB?

So if the size is basically width x height x 3 bytes per pixel, that makes my image 2848 x 2136 x 3 = 1.825MB in round figures. Is there some other overhead that bumps the size up?

How do I reduce the MB size for a group of photos I took. I want to save these reduced photos and send them to a client.

IF you want to reduce just the file size and not necessarily the dimensional size...
Create an action to "Save for Web", and run a batch using that action.
I'll show it on a Mac but it's the same for Windows.
1. Open one photo.
2. In the Actions panel click the menu selector and choose "New Action.
3. Name the action and click "Record".
4. Press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S to Save for Web (Alt+Cmd+Shift+S on Mac).
5. Select a save destination and then close the file, selecting "Do Not Save" when you do so.
6. Press the Stop button.
7. Click File>Automate>Batch.
8. Choose the parameters for the batch and click "OK"
It'll reduce the file size of the photos you chose.

LV Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office says "This VI or item belongs to a library that is expired or invalidly licensed"

I have downloaded the LV Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office for evaluation with LabVIEW 2010. The examples for the Help get many errors, including "The subVI is not executable. You must fix all errors in the subVI before this VI can run." and "This VI or item belongs to a library that is expired or invalidly licensed".
I selected that I wanted to evaluate the toolkit instead of putting an activation code during installation. Installation went OK.
How can I get the examples in this LV Toolkit to Run so that I can evaluate it?

So, I've been playing a bit with some short home video stuff - and now that we actually have some space to burn in iDisk - I would like to start uploading some video to our iWeb sites.
Upon my first attempt of doing such - I was met with a pop-up window in iWeb that told me the file was huge - and I would be best to convert it in QT Pro by way of exporting it. When I tried to do such via the export option - it was greyed out, that is unless I purchase the Pro version.
My question is - do I really need to purchase additional software to do this, and if so - is QT pro the program to go with, or is there something else that will be able to do what I need for the very limited amount of "video" that I plan to do?

Assuming you edited in iLife ,e.g. iMovie you can export to QT formats from there vs. paying for QT Pro, opening and then exporting from QT which will just do the same thing with some more options.
Idea: Open the file in MPEG Streamclip (free) and you can export to various iTunes formats without knowing a thing about exporting and pay zero for the privilege and probably do a better job of it. Use Streamclip version 1.9b3 , export to MPEG-4 and then press the iTunes button and pick a format you like. You will find even the basic to iPod setting at 320X240 will make very good quality videos that upscale to 640X480 well and are nicely small.

You can install on up to 2 machines at any one time. Even if you have a Mac and Windows, that's the great advantage of CC!

Disk Utility: Reporting wrong size for disk after a restore

First up, hardware is G4(PPC) running OS 10.4.11
I've just purchased and installed a new 500G drive for this old workhorse as an upgrade for the previous secondary drive. Set it up with a single partition, JHFS+. No problems so far. Went to copy the files from the old drive to this new one and thought, "Why don't I try that handly looking Restore button?". +Yeah, apparently a bad idea+. The old drive is 120GB. I set its (only) volume to be the source and my newly created partition to be the target; set it going and left it alone. All appeared to be well when I came back, until I checked the available space on the new drive.
Disk Utility now reports that this new, 500G drive has a Total Capacity of 128G (137,438,952,960 bytes).
*Remedies tried so far:*
- I've tried reformatting/partitioning, but wasn't able to convince it otherwise. Also tried it booting from an install DVD just in case that made a difference.
- I downloaded a utility from the drive manufacturer which I managed to get on to an ancient, dusty w2k box. Reformatted the drive with 2 NTFS partitions. This seemed to do the trick as they both mounted when I rebooted the Mac. However, when I went to reformat the volumes to JHFS I noticed that the total disk size was still being reported as 128G. Still, they reformatted fine and I transfered my data to them. On a reboot, though, the Mac decided that it didn't want to see the second partition and only shows me disk1s10, ignoring the second partition I set up.
- I have an identical, empty drive to the 500G. I thought I might be able to use the Restore "feature" to trick it back. Set up the second 500G in a firewire box, ran the restore from the empty volume to the screwed up one. No dice.
I thought that OS X ignored any sort of BIOS info on a drive and merely looked at the physical media. Is this correct? Does it store this gathered info in a file somewhere that I can delete?

I have no problems playing with the command line as root, if that's the sort of suggestions you've got. I just thought I'd ask here before I fdisk/dd etc from new500 to old500. Geometry of the new500 is 60801/255/63.

Change Report Font Size for Printer Friendly Page

I have a report using a template of 'Reports Region' and I have a link to a printer friendly page. Because the report text is so big I would like to make it smaller. I have already reduced the width of the report region but that has made 2 page reports run into 4 pages. I tried adding tags to the page to modify it but I was only able to make the text at the top of the page smaller and not the report. I tried modifying the theme_V3.css file but I could not find a place to modify text/font size in the report (This was trial and error as I am unfamiliar with css).
I would like to only have it smaller on the printer friendly page but if I will be forced to change it all the time I would like to know if there is at least an option.
If the only way to make this happen is to build a custom report then so be it. (But again the printer friendly page only pulls in the current page and I want it to only be small on the printer page)

You need to use a print media stylesheet. You'll need to find class(es) or other CSS selector(s) to attach the font size rule(s) to - look at the HTML source for your page.

Scan Size for jpg

I have an HP Officejet 6500A Plus and I am unable to scan a full sized photo (8.5 x 11") to my MAC. The scanner only captures a small portion of the image even with the original placed at the lower right side of the glass.

Thanks for reporting the issue. Seems that, the auto crop feature is enabled on your scan application. From your mac, access the HP scan and disable the autocrop feature.

Financial Reporting: One prompt for all reports in a book

I want to prompt once for all reports in the book for year and month. Right now it prompts for each report. I see that you can select to "respond at book level" but I don't know if that will solve the problem and I can't see how to make that drop down appear.
Books points of view are set to User POV for year and month now. When I try to edit the memebr selection I see member names, sub var and User POV but no prompt choice.

Allowing evenly spaced double windows on one screen for quikc referencing?

I can’t believe I am asking this but on Windows if you drag the window to the far right or far left it reduces the viewed window to have the screen allowing you to do the same but on the opposite side. This is really good when I am studying and need to keep looking for info on the two separate windows. It saves me from forever having to click on the window I want to view and then click back. Is there an Apple script or something that does the same so I can have the same functionality in my MacBook Pro?

What happened to the Inspiration Browser in Photoshop 11? Did something else replace it?

The earlier version of Photoshop I was using had an Inspiration Browser. Did it go away, was it replaced?

I am using Lightroom 5.7, 64 bit with Windows 7 Professional. For no apparent reason, I now get an error message when I export a photo, say a raw image to a JPG. However, the exported image seems to be OK. But now I notice that my LR directory of folders

What happened and is there a fix? I tried uninstalling Lightroom and re-installing, but problem persists.

How do I make Photoshop the default Edit App for .jpg in Windows 7?    I want to be able to right click on a .jpg file, select the EDIT option in the Context Menu, then have Photoshop edit the file instead of Paint.
In Windows XP it was very easy to use the File Manger to associate the file type .jpg and action edit with Photoshop.    No so easy in Windows 7. It is easy to change the default OPEN application, but I would like to leave Windows Viewer as the default OPEN application and have Photoshop as the EDIT applicaiton.

Before I posted the original question here, I had probably spent a couple of hours trying to research it.   I hate to find no answer for something I know can be done.   So I spent some more time and found the following in the bowels of a Tech Forum that is generally way over my head. I have modified it to be Photoshop specific.
These instructions will update the default EDIT action for image types - jpg,png,gif and the variations.     If you are unfamiliar with editing the program registry you probably will want to back up your registry or take a system backup.
1. Open up the registry editor (Regedit.exe).
You will need to be signed on as a Windows user that is an administrator
2. Find HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> SystemFileAssociations -> image -> shell -> edit -> command
This seems like it would be easy but it is not, because there are many key names that are very close (like System.FilesAssociations).   Keep looking because you will find it eventually.
3. Double click on "Default" (on right window pane) and update the program location.
You should see that MSPAINT.EXE is the current program.
Erase the existing value and enter you photoshop location in quotes followed by %1 in quotes. For me this is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe" "%1"
Hit return.
4. Exit Regit and test.
