Windows Services - Dropping Network Neighborhood - Slow Browsing

I am having some strange things occur with the Windows services and wonder if anyone has any ideas. I have read many posts and made sure my DNS is correct, and that the xserve is a domain member in Windows sharing.
First thing is that the xserve drops out of the network neighborhood out after several days. I can't track down exactly why, but after reboot it shortly returns.
Second thing relates to browsing the Windows services. When a user browses the shares through My Network Places, the browsing becomes slow to a near halt when they drill down. But when I bring up a window and type the shares address in the address box and setup a shortcut the browsing is much, much more responsive.
Any help is appreciated, but as of right now I am at a loss for a solution. Do I need to modify the os level in the smb.conf file? Or would enabling Workgroup Master Browser or Domain Master Browser have any effect?

Hi
Server Admin > Windows > Settings > Advanced. Disable Workgroup Master Browser or Domain Master Browser if they are ticked.
If there is more than one PC on the network they have a conference amongst themselves to decide which one of them should present the network browsing container. They are better at it than the Mac Server – they are PCs after all. Leaving this setting enabled on Windows Services on the Mac can cause slow and erratic browsing behaviour as well as computers sometimes appearing and sometimes disappearing.
Although not necessary restart the server after disabling the setting.
Hope this helps – Tony

I note with irony how you will see that someone tried to contact me...but that isn't the case. I contacted them. By phone because that was what the "Chat" customer service person told me to do. This is classic case of one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. When I do get a live person on the phone ....Basically....verizon says there is a "line problem" and I wait for three days and the speed gets better for about a week, and then the speed drops off.
They can't deliver what I am paying for. I don't have a phone, I pay for high speed internet because FIOS is unavailable. Currently as I type this....speed test says I am .9/.27...the modem tells me 1.5/.4 but it drops as well. What is the issue, Verizon?
In addition someone on Verizon's end says...someone will call you in a few hours...which never happens. Never. More like in a day or two. If that.

  • Windows Network Neighborhood

Any thoughts on how to get to 10.5 version of Mac OS act more like the 10.3 version when connecting to windows networks? My windows PC's used to show up on the Mac Network screen and I would be able to browse them and their files. After going to 10.5 that ability is gone.
My Windows PC's can connect up to the Mac just fine (Mac computers show up on the Vista Network Neighborhood).
I want to transfer files to my Mac, so I am ending up going to the PC, connecting up and copying files over. I would just rather stay on the Mac and just import them.

  • Windows 7 32 bit computer does not show in network neighborhood

If I go to Windows Explorer only certain computers will show (both Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit computers) under network. Why would
    another computer not be showing.
The computer is on Windows Server 2008 domain.
If I a computers that does not show and open Network and Sharing Center, Change advanced sharing settings, I see Turn on network discovery and Turn on file and printer sharing  are checked.

After upgrading all the computers on a small LAN (about 10 workstations) I found that only a few of the workstations would show up in network neighborhood.  This was a using a clean install of Windows7Pro on all the  computers.  After a great
deal of checking settings and verifying that the really could be accessed by mapping a drive to a known computer name and share such as:
\\SERVER1\data, but unable to see the computers in network neighborhood, out of frustration I changed the workgroup name from the default WORKGROUP to WORKGROUP1 and like magic the network neighborhood became populated.
I saw hints about this in several other forums, but nothing on Microsoft, so wanted to pass it along that this really works.  OTH, I have other workgroups that work just fine with the default WORKGROUP name,
So, after changing all the computers in the workgroup over to WORKGROUP1 all became visible and my problem was solved.  Oh and this was just a typical TCP/IP network with a Dynex router providing dhcp services and internet access.  Absolutely plain
vanilla, no 3rd party firewalls, just the default tcp/ip network settings that are pretty much installed automatically when installing W7Pro.  And all the computers were set up as WORK networks with Network Discovery and sharing enabled.  I verified
again by changing some back to WORKGROUP that when I did so those computers were no longer visible on the network.
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • Using Windows Network Is Slow

My marketing dept. (Mac Pros) connects to the larger Windows network via ethernet. The actual connections work fine, BUT the transfer of files, searching, opening/saving of files is SLOOOOOOW for the Macs. My IT guy's not sure how to troubleshoot.
Could the issue be a network setting? Maybe a wiring/router problem? I've used my Mac on a PC network before and it was as fast as you would expect.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hi
Along with the other suggestion can you resolve DNS for either your local domain or an external one in quick order? Something like:
    host -a apple.com
Should return an output similar to this:

In fairly short order. If there's a delay then that could explain why the network is slow. Especially true if internal DNS Services are based around .local. If that's the case (generally true of most Windows Network environments of my experience) then add the .local domain in the Search Domain field. System Prerences > Network > Network Connection > Advanced > DNS.
If it's none of the above look at the physical structure of the network itself. Dodgy patch lead either at your access point or the patch panel itself.
Two things you can eliminate before escalating the problem further.

  • Requirement is to run CMD.EXE under the Local System Account. So that we can map a network drive to be used by a windows service, which will be created by command: - net use z: \\servername\sharedfolder /persistent:yes

    Environment:
    OS:  Windows 7 32/64 bit, Windows 2008 Server 64
    bit/ Windows 2012 Server 64 bit
    Priority:
    - Critical
    Requirement: - Since
the Windows Service is running under the Local System Account, we would like to emulate this same behaviour.
Basically, we would like to run CMD.EXE under the Local System Account. So that we can map a network drive to be used by a service using following
    command
    net use z: \\servername\sharedfolder /persistent:yes.
    Already Attempt:
We tried to launch the CMD.exe using the DOS Task Scheduler AT command.  Here’s a sample command:
    AT 10:36 /interactive cmd.exe
But I received a warning that “due
to security enhancements, this task will run at the time excepted but not interactively.”
It turns out that this approach will work for XP, 2000 and Server 2003 but due to session isolation
Interactive services no longer work on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and above.
      2.  We
tried to create a secondary Windows Service via the Service Control (sc.exe) which merely launches CMD.exe.
    <Drive>:\sc create RunCMDAsLSA binpath= "cmd" type=own type=interact <Drive>:\sc
    start RunCMDAsLSA
In this case the service fails to start and results it the following error message:
FAILED 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
      3. One
suggestion, we found to launch CMD.exe via a Scheduled Task, but
it is not giving any option to launch CMD.exe in interactive mode; so that I can map network drive using net command.
      4. I read an article, which
demonstrates the use of PSTools from SysInternals. I launched the command line and executed following command
    psexec -i -s cmd.exe
PSTools worked fine, but It seems that in scope of Sysinternals Software License
Terms. You may not "use the software for commercial software hosting services."
Application will deploy on client, which will be like commercial,
so we are not able to use PSTools.
Kindly assist us for achieving the requirement. We have tried all the ways, but nothing is working for us. Kindly suggest.
    I will be really thankful.

    Hi Sir,
Nothing worked from above for us. You can see our remarks on posted query.
That’s why, we posted on forum.
And there will not be any vulnerability, because, if we will use "net
    use ..."
    in network domain; definitely,
we will provide username and password of mapped drive system.
And, that system, itself is given by client; so that, there must not be any vulnerability; they are ready to provide user name and password.
We need a way; by which we can complete the requirement. Kindly assist.

  • Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L

    Hi!
I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
    100% repeatable scenarios:
    ## Scenario 1 ##
    1) Log in
    2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
    3) Check that it has connected
    4) Lock screen (Win+L)
    5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
    6) Unlock screen (using password)
    7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
    ## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
    1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
    2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
    3) Start copying files from computer to server
    4) Lock the screen on computer
    5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
    6) Unlock screen on the computer
    7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
    timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.

    Best regards,
    Sergiusz

Same issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
    Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.

  • Windows Server 2012R2 network start working very slow?

The is no problem with excel. Network is slow. All other network applications are opening and working slow as well.
So far I have checked physically connection between server and PC through switches, routers and servers.  All seems to be OK.

After a few months our network, based on Server 2012 R2, start working very slow.
When you want open for e.g. excel 2013 file from network drive its take ages and also any changing within spreadsheet making excel not responding.
Any idea how to speed up network again?

  • Slow Accessing Files Across a Windows 2003 Server Network

I posted this quite some time ago in the Os X Forum:
    Hi,
We get the spinning ball when we access files across a Windows 2003 network with our Os 10.3.9 Macs.
It seems that the more files there are in the folder, the longer you see the ball, our Fonts folder can sometimes take up to 2 minutes before you can scroll to the bottom of the folder.
This happens after a computer restart or a program restart.
Does anyone know of a fix for this issue, as it is quite annoying?
Also note: This does not happen when accessing the same files through Os9 classic, even though the machines are running 10.3.9.
The network is all new cat 5 cables and this a relatively new Dell Power Connect 3324 switch connected to a very fast Dell Poweredge 2600 server.
    Thanks in advance,
    David

I'm also running several Macs on a Windows Small Business Server (Windows Server 2003) and the only way I am able to pull up the files was to join each one of my Macs to the Windows Server's network domain. You have to do this through the Directory Utility in the Utilities folder. There is one draw back from what I can tell, and it's something that I need some help with. It seems that once a Mac (running Leopard) is joined to a Windows domain, it takes the log in process forever to finish. Logging into a Leopard Mac alone is pretty quick, but after joining the domain, logging into any of the Macs on the Windows domain takes over a minute. If anyone knows the answer to this one, I'm all ears.

  • Droid RAZR (not MAXX) 4G, service drops on GB and ICS

Okay, the forums are full of threads concerning this issue. The phone loses data connectivity as well as voice. Every person seems to have a different opinion as to when or where their service drops, and I have tried to find a fix (official or not) since I first got my RAZR.
I got my phone sometime in March 2012 from a Verizon store during a promotion. I was happy I can get a phone with better hardware than my DROID X (awesome phone-best I ever had). I didn't care much about the 4G, but I considered it a perk for upgrading.
    1. A day later I started having problems with my service. The 4G connection would drop, the 4G icon would turn white and then disappear for good. The phone would have no data connection at all but a few seconds later the white 4G icon would reappear and turn blue later. I thought it is because the 4G coverage is spotty as I was constantly moving from one place to another. But I got home (where I never had problems and Verizon service was always excellent) and it would do the same thing.
    2. I have data connectivity and voice service but I turn off the screen. When I turn the screen back on, data connection is lost and I have no service available. I had one error that said "SIM card invalid" or something like that a few times. On Gingerbread I just switched to 3G only and I had no problems. But every time I switched back to use the LTE, I had the same problem over and over.
    3. Upgraded to ICS as I figured Motorola and Verizon worked together to find a "cure" for these sudden service losses. I was wrong. With ICS it is even worse. I lose data and voice service very often. In store, Verizon employees are telling me they have never seen problems like mine (liars?). On the phone with CS I am told they do not know of any issues similar to mine. But forums are full of threads of people having the same issue. Answers from VZ employees are not very clear and directs people to a simple Factory Reset, cleaning the SIM card, reinserting the SIM card... basic stuff a monkey could think of too.
    4. Some times after a phone conversation, I hang up and immediately after, my service drops. I have to turn the screen off and then back on after about 5 seconds, the service is still nowhere to be seen, but if I leave the screen on for about 10 seconds, the phone will regain its connectivity to the network. THIS HAPPENS IN 3G COVERAGE AS WELL AS 4G NOW.
Steps taken: Downloaded the Motorola app to Restore Connectivity - did not work, I still have the problem.
Carefully cleaned the SIM card surface making sure there is no static electricity  discharge - did not work, I still have the problem.
Factory reset numerous times  - did not work, I still have the problem.
Removed and reinserted the SIM card - did not work, I still have the problem.
Updated to ICS hoping that would solve the problem - did not work, I still have the problem.
Anything I do I still have the problem.
So please tell me, Does VZ publicly acknowledges there is a problem with DROID RAZR? If yes why do some people inside VZ deny any issues with it while others don't. Aren't they trained or aren't they reading the same training material the others do? Besides that I am not aware of Motorola or VZ taking any responsibility in trying to fix this.Is there a fix in the works? Please if there is any help for people like me, with the same problem, I think VZ should email owners with solutions. REAL SOLUTIONS because it is possible. I receive newsletters for new phones and plans but none to suggest a fix to issues.
And factory reset after factory reset is not working out for me as I use my phone not to txt my friends or send funny pictures of my dog to my neighbor but for business. This is really affecting and annoying me. And yes, I could switch to an iPhone but Android provides me with a great deal of options in my line of work that iPhone does not have. And yes, I could switch to another Android based phone, but I paid for this one and I want to use what I paid money for.
Again... final question is: Is there a fix, a software fix (I think this has to do with software) for this?
    Thank you!

I had EXACTLY ALL of the same issues (plus some Bluetooth issues):
Got my phone in January or February
First instance of this happened about the middle of June (or maybe the third week) for several days before I finally called, believing it was a "hiccup" in the network (still on GB)
Customer Service did some troubleshooting, placed it in "safe mode" to see if it might be an app causing it, factory reset, etc., etc., etc.......
VZ put in a network trouble ticket which seemed to solve the issue (although I don't really know what may have been done) for about a week (now I know that this was a mere coincidence)
About a week or two later (still on GB) it started again; this was maybe a Wednesday
CS troubleshooting, another trouble ticket, etc., etc., and then I finally did a factory reset myself
Friday night (maybe Saturday) ICS is out, and downloaded believing it would fix it.
The problem was resolved briefly (several hours, maybe a full day) and then began again with a vengance
Called, went through all the same humbug, did a couple (or a few) factory resets, and I too, had the "invalid SIM" error show up on the screen out of nowhere ........
Customer Service had me to go to my local Verizon store and get a new SIM (they thought that might possibly be the problem). Got the replacement, and it worked, again, only briefly; just a few short hours later, it was right back to the same old thing........more phone calls
    trouble ticket is still out.......
Was even told by the advance tech support person that on several phones with this very same problem, that he actually saw this resolved by simply creating a different, brand new Google account (instead of the Verizon customer's original Google account) during setup, after a factory reset (don't ask me how......). Gladly, this is one step that I didn't take (that's all I need is one more email account!)
Finally, it was determined that it MUST be the device. I really didn't want another phone as I always keep my phones in pristine condition cosmetically, and there was no reason (as far as I was concerned) to swap it.
Reluctantly, I allowed them to send me a replacement. I say, "reluctantly" because my original was a new device but they would be sending me out a "certified reconditioned, like-new" replacement.
After some trepidation, I decided to go ahead; Motorola would probably take a year to get mine back to me after finding "nothing wrong", or the same year getting me a replacement, should I be lucky enough that my original device would act up for them to see that there actually is a real problem. Verizon, on the other hand could have a replacement to me in two days.
Needless to say, it has been a week (5 days) with the replacement and I have to admit that it absolutely WAS the device that I bought originally. This replacement hasn't repeated the problem, (with the exception of ONE VERY MINOR instance of about a 5 - 15 minute window on one day only), and I'm happy to say that it works like my original device did when I first got it.
I got a call after the 3rd or 4th day (I believe it was the 4th day) with the replacement device, from the trouble ticket people (technician who actually works out in the field maybe?) and was told that they have thoroughly checked the network/antenna/tower here and found that there was absolutely nothing wrong, and that everything is functioning as it should.
This problem was continuously happening at my house, so it was natural that I believed something was wrong with the tower here near my house. I live in a good 3G/LTE coverage area near New Orleans and had no problems whatsoever from January/February through the first part of June, so it was only natural that I thought it must be a problem with the tower.
I thanked him, and told him about the replacement, and he told me that's what he was going to suggest next, and it was the only suggestion that he had left.
Just know that in the course of all of these calls, I was told by at least a few reps (2 for sure) at Verizon that they were aware that this IS a problem on some of the Razr's and Razr Maxx's.
If this is as bad for you as it was for me (and I'm confident that it is), then I would call Customer Service - don't go to a store. Tell them EVERYTHING that has happened, everything that you've done to attempt to resolve it (including the painful process of factory resets), and what I've described here.
If you're okay with a "new" (read: replacement) device, then I'm sure that they can get you a replacement out in short order. As far as it looking new, you would NEVER be able to tell cosmetically that this isn't a brand new device.
I hope that this was able to help you, as well as all the others, with this issue.
Good luck everyone, and God bless you.

Okay, so regrettably, I must report to everyone that the replacement followed suit after only 6-7 days. It lost 4G connectivity and jumped to 3G and that's where it stayed.
So I call Verizon and after a brief conversation, they asked if it was okay for them to transfer me over to Motorola for them to troubleshoot and I said that I'd be more than glad to speak with them.
    Here's the breakdown:
After a lengthy call (an hour and twenty minutes), allowing them to remotely connect to my phone, and the Level 2 Tech seeing for himself that it's on 3G in a full 4G area, he tells me that there's nothing more that can be done.
    WHAAAT?!!!
He said that if I want to send it in to Motorola they'll look at it, and if they did find anything wrong with the phone they'll send me a replacement, but if they DON'T find anything wrong with it (which I'm sure would be the case), they will simply send me my phone back, and that it will be Verizon's network that is the problem.
In this scenario I would need to find a replacement phone to use while my Razr goes to Motorola (for them to find nothing wrong with of course, and blame everything on Verizon's LTE network) only to get it back weeks later and be totally inconvenienced (this has been going on since June).
The last thing he said to me before getting off the phone was that they have similar devices with other carriers and they don't have any of these problems with those devices.
I've started searching the other devices forums here in the Verizon Wireless Community and I'm beginning to see a pattern.  The same issue is happening with quite a few of the other 4G devices so I'm not really sure that another device (different manufacturer) is even the answer.
They have sent me yet another Droid Razr and I can honestly say that this will be the last one. If I can't find a device that will actually keep/hold LTE connectivity then I may have to go back to Sprint.  Their native coverage is nowhere near Verizon's but they also don't have much 4G coverage right now.
If I'm going to have to be on 3G anyway, I may as well pay less than I'm paying now - or at least pay the same and not have to worry about going over on data.I guess we'll see how this replacement works out and go from there.
Anyhow, just know that it may not be a Razr/Razr Maxx problem after all.
Hopefully, they can get this sorted out and we can all get back to life......

  • Windows Services not working, nmbd stopping

    Hi all,
    I encounter a strange problem.
I'm currently trying to install a Mac OS X Server System on a Xserve and XRaid. This to remove a Win2K Server with AD on and Exchange working on it.
I set my server in OD master, import accounts from the AD, replaced Exchange with Kerio etc ...
But when i try to use Windows services, smbd always working fine (file sharing is ok), nmbd stopping. So i can't use it as a PDC server because the domain i create disappears with the crash of the nmbd process. In fact nmbd seems to stop after nmblookup requests.
I've to say that the Win2K server is not stopped.
I installed lots of OS X Server as Windows PDC and it has always been working fine.
I also tried to activate Windows Service as "linked to Active Directory" and as "Standalone Server" and it resulted the same issue.
Does anyone had an idea ? I thought that it could be a problem with the Win2K requests and crashing my nmbd with nmblookup.

I'll try these things tomorrow to see what happens :
    - Change the "os level" setting to something high in /etc/smb.conf . (because of the Win2K Server).I'll set this to 255.
    1. Make sure that DNS is running on your server. Make sure that the server has a dns entry for itself.
    2. Ideally "Workgroup Master Browser" and "Domain Master Browser" should both be enabled. An aside, this did not interfere with my seperate AD domain on the same network.
    3. Enable WINS on your server.
    4. Configure WINS on Windows clients to point to server.

  • Questions about Windows services on a OS X 10.3 server

Hi! I'm wanting to configure an OS X 10.3 server to participate in a Windows workgroup so I can share a directory on the server that the Windows machine can use as a backup drive, of sorts. I've got only ONE Windows box in an all-Mac network. The ultimate goal is to provide an automated backup solution for the Windows machine. I would like the Windows user to copy their files to the server so the scheduled Backup running on the server will backup their files, along with the rest of the files that are backed up to iDisk.
So, I'm thinking I can use the Windows service on the OS X server to provide the backup directory/folder the Windows machine will map to a local windows drive, making it easy to copy files to the target backup area.
I've got AFP, OpenDirectory (I think), and Windows service as the only services running on the OS X server. I've got the Windows service setup as a standalone server with the correct workgroup name and the Windows machine is setup with the same workgroup as the server. The Windows machine is running Windows XP.
I've got the Windows service setup to act as the workgroup browse master and I do NOT have WINS enabled.
    Now for my questions:
When I view the workgroup on the server in the "Network" area of Finder, I see nothing. When I view the workgroup on the Windows machine, I only see the Windows machine. On the server, I turned on the Windows service log and noticed only SMBD was starting, not NMBD. I presume this is why the server can't "see" the Windows machine and vice-versa, correct?
    I've read the following threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2358362&#2358362
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4132419&#4132419
and it looks like I need to create an account for the Windows user on the OS X server and I'm thinking I need to use the "Workgroup Manager" for that, right?
There are no passwords for the Windows accounts that would be connecting to the same backup area on the server. Will I be able to create accounts without passwords on the server for these users or will I be required to specify a password for when the Windows machine connects to the server?
This is my first time configuring an OS X server like this so please excuse my elementary questions.
    Thanks!
    Peace...

You need to make sure the shortname in workgroup manager is the same as the logon name when you create the drive on the PC.
Personally i'd do it all over IP. On the PC goto Run, and type \\ip address of server\sharename. It should then ask for a UN/PW, this is what you've entered into workgroup manager, and should be the shortname.
That should then give you the drive.
To map it so its always there when they log-in, goto my computer and map network drive, making sure you click the link that says 'use a different account to connect'

  • Slow browser after update

Browser is running extremely slow after upgrade to Yosemite.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If the Downloads button (with the icon of a downward-pointing arrow) is showing in the toolbar, click it and then click Clear in the box that appears. The download history will be removed. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
              Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Follow the instructions in this support article. Any change?
Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Photos, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Slow browser sppeds

Switched to Leopard and the slow browser problem is back. Hawaiian Starman solved this issue (see below) in the past.
Anything new to try with Leopard?
From nov 29, 2006 post by Starman
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
    - Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
    * Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
    * Back to the "Show" menu, select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There enter 4.2.2.2 in the DNS servers box and select "apply".
Creating a personal location seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.
Restart the computer, then try Safari. Post back and let me know how you make out.

    Hello Hawaiian Starman,
Thanks very much for your very helpful posts re slow connections. They have taken care of our problem for any computer attached to an Ethernet cable. However, the problem persists for machines connected via wifi. And, the problem differs between each machine (1 desktop PowerPC G5 and 2 Intel MacBook Pros).
    Here is the timeline.
We are moving from Starband satellite internet to a local provider who supplies wireless connectivity (http://www.sunncast.net/). With the suggestions you have posted, we find that any machine connected via ethernet cable gets very fast connectivity and has no problems with the "problem" websites. However, after the installer left and we settled down for the evening, we found that one of the 2 laptops was having difficulty with several of the "problem" websites. Washington Post was not accessible at all. Curiously, it was the machine that had been fully upgraded to 10.4.11 that was having no difficulty! Given that several upgrades were necessary for the other laptop. it was decided to upgrade the system, ignoring things like iDvd, iTunes, etc. for the moment. The result of this upgrade was a serious deterioration of speed with all of the "problem" websites having an enormous slowdown. The ONLY problem seen (so far) with the properly performing laptop was that gmail just displays nothing and goes into an infinite download loop in Camino but loads instantly in Safari.
Quite a while was spent checking and comparing networking setup (preferences) to no avail. Later I realized that Safari was operating in Rosetta mode on the functioning laptop, but making that change did nothing to help. The browser on the G5 behaves essentially like the slow laptop. No Washington Post, very slow NY Times, TNR, Amazon useless, etc.
Late night fooling showed that turning off javascript in Safari improved speed enormously, but, of course, that had it's own problems with most of these sites.
As a final note, both of these laptops have visited numerous hotels, colleges, business offices, etc. and connected instantly with no problems. Thanks for any help you can give us.

  • Minis dropping networked drive

We have 5 Minis set up as a render farm. For this to work, each Mini must have the workstation's hard drive available on the desktop. I've done this but some computers are losing this connection and the drive has to be re-connected via the network connect to server function.
Any ideas as to why this would happen? Seems to happen even if the machines aren't doing anything. I'll just notice that one of the machines has dropped the hard drive.
    Thanks;/

    Nicklas,
the Forms runtime executes with the network privileges inherited form teh Forms Listener Servlet and thus the user owning the HTTP Service / OPMN (Oracle Application Server) process (or OC4J for the Developer Suite) has. By default Windows services are owned by a local account and thus don't have access to the network, which may be your problem. We had similar issues in the past where people tried to access file resources on a mapped network.
