Wipe for resale - have no install or repair disks

I am ready to sell my old iBook on eBay, but of course I need to wipe it first. I bought it used, and it did not come with ANY install or repair disks. How can I wipe it without those?

The idea to make another OS X user account (admin level) is good, if the old iBook has an
OS X 10.1 ~ 10.3 installed on its hard disk drive. As suggested, this requires certain steps.
What kind of OS does it have? OS 9.x can be easy if you have some basic utilities. If there
is a mac user group or a used computer store around with Macs, talk to someone about
this matter. Sometimes, you can find Mac OS discs in charity thrift stores; or craigslist ads.
If no OS X in the computer... and you just want your stuff totally wiped:
If you have access to another Mac with FireWire ports, a dual-end FireWire cable could
be used to connect two FW capable Macs; and then boot this iBook G3 into FireWire
*Target Disk Mode*, to use the other Mac's Disk Utility, to secure erase the iBook's internal
hard disk drive; then be sure the partition map is Apple Partition Map, (APM) & reformat
the hard disk drive to HFS+ (journaled) so at some later time, someone would be able
to install a working OS 9.2 or OS X 10.2 on the computer by simply using an install CD.
Without the discs, you can't totally erase everything; and if you use a different system
than one may expect in the computer to erase it, then another new owner may be lost.
{And you can't use an older installer disc than the computer; it has to be either the exact
version it would have shipped with when new, or a retail full install newer than the Mac.
Since the model you have there, usually has a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive, an OS X
version would have to be a Retail set on several CDs. Not one from a different Mac.}
The software set the computer shipped with would be about the best to have with it;
and to have sold that without its original Apple install/restore software packet was not
responsible. The software is an official part of the computer sale, to be included.
With the iBook G3 (white model?) erased and reformatted, anyone with a retail OS 9.2.1
CD could install a working system fairly easy. A few downloads to update that to 9.2.2
are online; but there are no official sources to download the whole OS 9.2 installer and
the OS is no longer available from Apple directly. Some resellers may have suitable disc
sets, or retail ones newer than the computer, which may be supported by the hardware.
You may be able to find information about the install disc set (missing) through use of the
database download from MacTracker: http://mactracker.ca & online @ http://everymac.com
There are Identify by serial number web sites; where build info about your Mac can be found
to help further detail the specific hardware configuration (& help find suitable OS disc sets.)
Once the computer is erased and formatted correctly, it may be possible install a test
OS 9.2 system on there, since OS 9 supports 'drag and drop' installation; this may be
possible if the file were in another computer connected by FireWire (target disc mode.)
There are several means of working around issues specific to older systems & hardware;
so if you have time and interest, the answers are available in greater detail - if needed.
If you can erase & reformat the old iBook, someone could install/restore an OS later.
Good luck & happy computing!

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

  • Unable to boot from Install DVD to repair disk

I am trying to fix the following error Disk Utility gave me when verifying the volume:
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
I tried to boot from the Install DVD that came with my MBP and it simply won't boot from it. It DOES boot from a TechTools Pro Disk but I don't think tools to fix the problem exist on that. The install DVD shows up fine when I'm in OS X. I can burn DVDs, etc and everything just fine. Any idea why I can't boot from my Install DVDs?

As the computer will boot from the TechTools disk and you can burn disks, this suggests that the optical drive is OK, so what about the disk itself?
    (A) do you have the right one; or (B) is it damaged or dirty?
If it shows up when in OS X, have you tried changing the startup disk in System Preferences? Or even simply clicking on the Install icon (you do not have to install once the disk is running)?
I am not a user of Tech Tools, but from what I have read on the forums, I am surprised you think it does not have the utilities to make the repair you need (have you tried). My own preference would be for Disk Warrior which has always worked for me.

  • Have to check & repair disk permissions on every restart

Can anyone explain why I have to check & repair disk permissions every time I have to restart my MacBook Pro.  When I do the check I get various messages eg 'Library should be '0',  is '80'. And other variations for Library.

    I'd do one/more of a few things.
First, (and not only good for this exercise), I'd back up to a Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner clone - on an external disc, and/or use Time Machine.
Next step, boot in Safe mode and see how things are.
Next, create another account with similar permissions to the one you are using now. If the problem persists in this account also it is system wide.
Next boot from the clone you made and see what gives..........

  • Permissions repair/ disk utility

    Hello:
I believe I have a permissions repair problem as but I'm not entirely sure.
I'm very untechnical and somewhat shakey on my conclusions and how to
    proceed.
My computer slowed down this week after downloading freeware. I dumped all but one program. My space bar doesn't work properly as of last night, It only moves on the sides when hit hard. Most words just run together as I type.
Then today, I suddenly can't open Word documents. I forced quit and then restarted and then couldn't open PDF files either after working on the computer all day. Forced quit on Preview then couldn't open the hard drive as well. I was able to get into it through the applications icon.
Apple help suggests it's a permissions repair problem, but I'm confused. Went to disk utility and it says to install the OS X cd. I only have the PowerBook G4 Software Install and Repair disks. Are these one and the same?
I'd really appreciate any guidance on figuring this out and then how to proceed.
    Thanks so much.

    Hi Don:
Thanks for your help a couple of weeks ago. Just now attempting to solve.
Have used Mac Janitor and Cache Out X tonight and the inability to open files
on the desk top remains, as well not being able to open bookmarks in Safari in addition to having the same problem using the spacebar.
Wanted to ask some questions about your recommendations:
    1) When using Cache Out X, do I want to delete Caches from the User Domain
    as well as the Internet?
    2) Do I launch all of the icons in Onyx? The help menu was very confusing.
    3) I was unable to find Gullivers Link. Can you please explain this as well?
Additionally, while this note is correctly laid out while typing it, the preview page reveals line breaks that are not evident to me. This happens all the time
    in emails. Any ideas?
    Many thanks--
    Beth

  • Installing New Hard Disk

I started my G4 one day and all I got was the bong and a complete gray screen. It couldn't find the startup disk. I assume my hard disk has crashed.
I would like to purchase a new one and install it myself. Will I lose all of the personal information that is stored on my G4?
I have never installed a hard disk and wonder if there is anything else I need to do before attempting this installation?

Do you have your OSX install Discs?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
I would like to purchase a new one and install it myself.

Unknown, but it may be possible to recover it, especially if you get a big Firewire 400 Drive.
You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

  • Repair Disk Permissions ./usr?

This is the second time I've seen this after running my Repair Disk Permissions. Does anyone know what this means?
Group differs on ./usr, should be 0, group is 80
Owner and group corrected on ./usr
    Permissions corrected on ./usr
I've had my Mac for 2 years and run my Repair Disk Permissions regularly - I've only seen this once before a few months ago and now.
Also, where would I find ./usr
Thanks for any help or info.

I'm the only one that uses my Mac....
The operating system is made up of many small applications called processes. Each of these processes has a user (owner) and a group associated with it. Open the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder and select All Processes in the drop down menu. You are not alone! You should see yourself running applications (processes) and at least root and nobody listed as users. You may be the only login user on your computer but the operating system contains many non-login users that control different processes. The root user primarily controls the operating system. In OS X the root user is a non-login user unless you make root a login user.
    Who am I?
Every user has a primary group associated with that user. Let me do the "heavy lifting" from within the Terminal application. Of course you can try the command to see the ---text_output---. I'll use the command id to see who I am:
    [purplehaze:~] fred% id
    ---text_output---
    uid=501(fred) gid=501(fred) groups=501(fred), 79(appserverusr), 80(admin), 81(appserveradm)
I'm user 501(uid) whose shortname is fred. My primary group(gid) is 501 or fred. I belong to 4 groups. Because I belong to the group admin, I can install system software and perform tasks only the root user can do.
    Who are they?
Let's look at the id for the root user:
    [purplehaze:~] fred% id root
    ---text_output---
    uid=0(root) gid=0(wheel) groups=0(wheel), 1(daemon), 2(kmem), 3(sys), 4(tty), 5(operator), 20(staff), 31(guest), 80(admin)
root's primary group (gid) is 0 or wheel. You can express users and groups in words or numbers. The root user belongs to many groups tied to running the operating system. Let's query the netinfo database for all the users on my computer showing the uid and gid in numbers, their shortname, where their home folder is, and their realname:
[purplehaze:~] fred% nireport . /users uid gid name home realname
    ---text_output---
    -2 -2 nobody /var/empty Unprivileged User
    0 0 root /var/root System Administrator
    1 1 daemon /var/root System Services
    99 99 unknown /var/empty Unknown User
    25 25 smmsp /private/etc/mail Sendmail User
    26 26 lp /var/spool/cups Printing Services
    27 27 postfix /var/spool/postfix Postfix User
70 70 www /Library/WebServer World Wide Web Server
    71 71 eppc /var/empty Apple Events User
    74 74 mysql /var/empty MySQL Server
    75 75 sshd /var/empty sshd Privilege separation
    76 76 qtss /var/empty QuickTime Streaming Server
    77 6 cyrus /var/imap Cyrus User
    78 78 mailman /var/empty Mailman user
    79 79 appserver /var/empty Application Server
    501 501 fred /Users/fred Mark Jalbert
    502 502 saraswati /Users/saraswati saraswati
Users above 500 are login users. User 501 was created when I installed my system software . User 502 is another login user on my system that I created. I have the ability to create other users because I belong to the group admin (80) Remember- only the root user or users who belong to the group admin can perform changes to the OS. Users below 500 where created by the operating system during installation and are responsible for running processes tied to the OS.
Hopefully, I haven't lost you in to much techno babble. You are not the root user but you are a member of the group admin. This allows you to take on the role of the root user and make changes to the operating system. As I said before- It's not a big deal whether the /usr folder has the group admin associated with it. If repairing permissions will not permanently change the group to 0 (wheel) then I suspect you may have some file corruption. From the Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder... type /usr and click to Go button to see inside the /usr folder.

  • Mac book pro spinning on startup but never gets to log in screen, repair disk says unable to repair, 2007 computer running Lion, how do I reinstall Lion to the Mac HD, which is the disk that needs repair, but cannot be repaired?

2007 MacBook Pro, was shut down properly last PM.  Today on startup, spins and spins but cannot get to log in screen.  Held option key with restart and using disk utilities the mac HD showing needs repair, but cannot be repaired.  Says save as many files as possible and reinstall software.  Can't save files, can't get into them.  Willing to reinstall without saving, but can't because only disk option for the reinstall showing is the repair disk, and it is showing as locked.  What to do?

Sounds like the drive is starting to fail. Have you ever change the drive in that system? If not then it is time to think about doing that, the sooner the better.

  • Need advice on Repairing Disk Permissions...

I need some input from those who know how to Repair Disk Permissions (under Disk Utility, for those who don't know).
Basically, I lost a TON of my Access and Privileges on my G4 recently--which I really only noticed after iTunes would no longer let me import anything (no matter how many times I tried changing the Ownership & Permissions on my Music folder's Info section)--which, I might add, I suffered due to a virus caused by Limewire. As had been suggested to me, I Verified Disk Permissions, and saw that I had a TON of problems listed on my startup HD. So I'm now seeking ways to repair them.
Now, the most obvious way is using the Repair Disk Permissions program (which I've actually never had to use before). However, under OS10.3.9, when I select the Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility, in listing all my Drives available, it actually shows the drive in 2 formats/pictures:
    1) the actual technical name/manufactor model/GB size of the drive (on top), and
    2) the Desktop name and Icon picture of the Drive as it appears on my desktop.
This confuses me: as you can guess, the startup Drive in question is only partioned as one. So on Disk Utility, which of these 2 pictured drives do I have to highlight and Repair Disk Permissions to (i.e. 19GB Maxtor32049 Vs. 'HAL')?
Also, for those of you who have used other means (programs) to change Disk Permissions, which would you recommend? For example, I got a program from Versiontracker called BatCHmod, but I don't know if something like it is any safer than just using Repair Disk Permissions. Because unfortunately, I'm running out of room on my disk, and don't have nearly enough space on my other drive to hope to back the whole Drive up to.
    Please help!!!

    Hi phasmatrope!
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk HAL, in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
"We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
    New permissions are 33261"
This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
    Or these:
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
There may be others that you can ignore. Complete lists at link below.

  • Missing HD space and cant repair disk on disk utility

Ok this has been bugging me for past week now. First off I am missing 40GB of my 80GB HD. I know that disk are suppose to have less then the total but this data is just missing. I have used what size and Disk Inventory X to look for files that are taking up data. I have gotten rid of everything that takes up alot of space. The total size of everything together does not even total 20GB.
The reason I believe is awhile back I tried to make a partition for windows Xp but later deleted it. I do not know the size I made said parition but It may fit as to why I am missing space.
Lastly I have tried to use repair disk in disk utilities but it wont let me without running verify disk which when i use says that it failed and that I need to repair and verify using the OSX installation disk which I cant find. I probably wont be able to find the disk so is there anything I can do to fix this?
I just spend alot of money to get an XP disk and upgrade the RAM on this mac and dont want it to have been a waste. Help me please

Repairing your HD via the OSX installation disk is your first priority. Do you know anyone else with a Mac running the same version of OSX? Close to an Apple retail location?
How did you attempt to load XP the first time - bootcamp? How did you delete the partition?

  • Repair Disk Permissions - ODD !

I learnt yesterday about the importance of Repairing Disk Permissions although I admit it makes no sense to me why the whole permissions thing is about and the Apple web page about it may as well be in martian. Nonetheless I did repair disk permissions on my MBPro with 10.4.11.
So today I turned to my new MacPro with OSX 10.5.7 which I've had for 3 months and did a Repair Disk Permissions to see what happened. Slowly it created a LONG list of Permissions that differ and repaired them, eg: Application/iTunes....../Code Resources, should be -rw-rw-r-- they are lrw-rw--
Then, I downloaded and installed Firefox 3.0 and thought it best to follow the advice and do another Repair Disk Permissions.
Yet again, this task took a long time (much longer than it does on my MBPro with 10.4.11) and I can't be sure but I swear it identified some of the same permissions that needed repairing before, which supposedly were repaired, less than 30 minutes ago. EG : that listed above !
WHY would it need to repair permissions twice if the only thing going on in the interim was playing music on iTunes and downloading Firefox via Safari ?

  • Repair Disk Permisson from Adobe

I am trying to publish a .swf file from Adobe Flash CS3 and I get an error message that states "Be sure the destination file is not locked or on a locked drive." I called Adobe and they could not fix the problem. They also recommended that I call Apple but I wanted to try the support forums first. I have tried running the repair disk permission but that did not seem to work. Did I do something wrong? What else can I try? Please help! (I am new to Mac by the way.)

I am trying to publish the file in Flash CS3 (.swf) to my hard drive and then update the file in Adobe Dreamweaver CS3. From Dreamweaver I will update the file to the host server and then onto the internet. (The error message only comes up when I try to publish the file in Flash, before it gets to DW) I hope this answer's your question.
