Wireless connection lost in few seconds [solved]

Hi everyone
just come back to Arch after one year. The community grown fast and support seems to be fantastic.
Anyway, I have problems with my wireless connection. I installed the system from cd including ipw2200 driver (the right one for my card).
I followed the entire wiki guide on wireless and it seems to work, wpa_supplicant can associate to the access point and dhcpcd gets an address (valid). I can also ping external addresses (so DNS work too). After 5 seconds, anyhow, if I ping someone I got the message "network is unreachable".
Under windows the AP works fine. it has WPA-TKIP encription.
Thanks everyone

I just managed to solve the problem.
Actually, this problem is only for encripted connections. with open ones it works fine. I just made an attempt on an open router and it works. Then downloaded KDE and WICD and now it works fine also on encripted connections. Maybe WICD uses other modules to manage encription?
@statix: I ran wpa_supplicant manually and there were no errors, even after a long time. Quite strange. Could it be a wpa_supplicant bug? or a dhcpcd one?
@djzapi: kernel 2.6.30. Intel PCI wireless card. 32 bit system.

I have an interesting situation and perhaps you guys can give me a hand.
I'm installing Arch on a system that only has a WiFi; no big deal.
So, I get the live CD and
    1. Start it and choose the network install (that's the only choice for this CD)
    2. Go to tty2 and issue the following commands:
    a. ifconfig wlan0 up
    b. iwlist scan and I get:

Thank you for the reply guys!!
@treysis, In the logs I got an error something like "<eissid> deauthenticated (reason 6)" or something to that effect and I was wondering what that means... I suppose you are correct and that the system is trying to tell me that I need to use wpa_supplicant. I hope that's part of the install CD
I'll give it a try and I'll report back .
Thanks for the help and ideas.

I am experiencing serious problems after downloading iOS 6. I am loosing my connection after a few seconds/minutes. What can I do? Can you come back to 5.1.1.? How can I do that?

    You can't downgrade the iOS.
Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
iPad: Issues connecting to Wi-Fi networks  http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3304
iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Why does my ipod classic (80gb) connect for a few seconds then disconnect?

I have a ipod classic 80gb, granted its old, but it has a big memory so I can store my whole collection. Anyway, when I connect it to my PC (with windows 8.1) it will connect for a few seconds then disconnect. It will sometimes start to sync, but then disconnect after a few seconds. My computer is pretty new, Acer Aspire V5. I have tried reinstalling itunes, a new cable to connect it, different usb ports(2) and with and without the pc plugged into the mains, which is when it starts to sync for a brief second. Has anyone else had the same problem??

The S.I. prefix Giga is used to mean both 1000x1000x1000 and 1024x1024x1024. Computer software typically uses the second version, but using the first number makes the same number of bytes appear bigger when expressed as Gb, so is favoured by hard drive manufactures.
    80Gb10 = 74.3Gb2
It's a bit like specifying a quantity in gallons without saying whether they are US or Imperial gallons - everybody gets the same volume but one number will be bigger than the other. I could offer you a tank with 10 Imperial gallons of fuel in it - but if I tell you it's 12 US gallons it sounds like you're getting more for your money.
Once the total size of your library exceeds the capacity of your device all you need to do is create some size limited playlists to determine what goes on the device. Don't sync all movies, sync one or two that you plan to watch soon. Likewise with TV Shows. Limit podcasts to unplayed episodes and finally create a music subset. What worked for me for some time was a smart playlist called Steve's Tunes defined as Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Exclude where Exclude was regular playlist that I would manually add to until Steve's Tunes was small enough to fit. These days I run an iPhone and have a number of smart playlists with ? Gb of most played, ? Gb of highly rated, ? Gb of recently added, ? Gb of essentials, ? Gb of unplayed etc. Each time I sync I get slightly updated selection without having to put any extra effort in.

  • Airplay losses connection after a few seconds

When using my Iphone 4s connecting to apple tvm I lose connection after a few seconds.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Ok I think it's a problem with my router. I went to my cousin's house and the Wi-Fi worked there perfectly. I was even able to download many apps. So I guess my router probably can't take in more connections. Oh well thanks anyway.

  • [SOLVED]Wireless connection becomes deactivated 3 seconds

    Good day,
I am new to Arch. I installed Arch successfully and have everything working except the wifi.
My WLAN device is Broadcom's BCM4312 and I have installed b43 driver from AUR.  Wired eth0 connection works fine but when I connect using wireless, the connection lasts about  3 seconds(enough time to open 1 or 2 pages). As the sites open during this time, I think my device gets detected properly but somehow fails to keep the connection longer.

Sorry guys that I did not clearly document the steps clearly in my desperation to get the WiFi working.
I'll try recalling and list here what I did. All steps below are based on what I found on the web, googling the problem plus cfr's suggestion.
    1) Spotted this problem first, when I tried connecting using Network Manager(KDE front-end). Thought wicd might solve the problem and installed it, but didn't work.
    2) Googled, some had suggested that this problem was related to IPv6. Disabled it, still didn't work. [I just changed the config file with ipv6_disabled=1, didn't touch/restart any services at this step]
    3) Googled some more, some suggested that this problem was related to power save mode of the wirless interface. Switched it off, didn't work [I think my hardware doesn't support this mode anyways as I get an "Operation not permitted" when I try to turn it on, but not off ]
    4) Some had suggested to kill wpa_supplicant. But this didn't work either as it got spawned automatically every time I killed it with kill -9[Might have been due to NetworkManager]
    5) Asked this forum, uninstalled NetworkManager & wicd, disabled netctl & dhcpd, tried the manual method to connect WiFi. This time, it worked.
    @doak:
I did not change the config for wpa_supplicant and I don't think I ever saw two wpa_supplicant instances running. So this might have been a different problem for you, I think.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • S10e (4187XB5) wireless fails after a few seconds

The wireless thinks it is connected. It connects to the home (or office) wireless without trouble, acquires valid IP address, etc., but behaves as if unconnected after a few seconds.
    I have tried:
Uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter via Device Manager (after this, I can browse the web for a few seconds, then nothing will load again)
Installing all updates to the system (there were no significant pending updates)
Updating the driver for the Broadcom network adapter
Reverting to the earlier driver for the Broadcom network adapter
    Updating the BIOS.
Firewall is disabled. Ethernet works without issues, but it is not practical to use the netbook on ethernet.
    Assistance would be appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you for the suggestions. I do not have the Readycomm application. I did check the power management settings, and it was set to allow the computer to turn off the wireless to save power, so I unchecked and applied that. Still no luck.
I tried running the included PC Doctor 5 software and checking the network card. The Wireless Connectivity Test, Wireless Signal Strength Test and PCI Express Status Test all run without trouble. The TCP/IP Network Communication Test yields "Cannot Run," however. When I check the log, it says that the firewall may be blocking pings to the router, but the firewall is off. I double checked.
Edit: I am considering buying a replacement WiFi card, but I know this will only work if the problem is hardware. I'm still not sure; it seems counterintuitive that I it would be a hardware problem, since I can connect to wireless networks and browse the internet even for a few seconds. I can always see wireless networks and connect to them. It seems to be a TCP/IP problem.

  • I cannot sync my iphone 4 to my imac it connects for a few seconds then goes off

please can someone help me   When i connect my iphone 4 to my imac using bluetooth it pairs up but only lasts for a few seconds then goes off and shows
not connected  i have tried all sorts of ways  but  without success  why is this happening am i the only one  does anyone know the answer please

Seems like my problem - I have a new iPhone 4 and it does not want to pair with any device. It seems to connect, and is recognised by my MacBook pro, it shows the code that my Macbook shows, but then says it cannot connect. Neither did it connect to another imac, nor does it connect to my carphone. Have received a replacement (as I had bought the iPhone five days ago), have a new one now, but exactly the same problem. But I cannot alter the bluetooth settings on my iPhone, and restoring does nothing, nor leaving it in the completely unaltered setting, nor switching off all other wireless devices. Does anybody know how to solve this?

  • BEFW11S4 wireless connection lost after reboot / sleeping

I am using the linksys wireless router BEFW11S4 version 4, firmware version 1.5, to connnect two winXP computers, one a desktop (wired) and one a laptop (wireless).
The wireless connection was created using the EasyLink Advisor software (support.linksys.com).  The wireless connection made by this software to my laptop has no signal strength problems.  A wired connection to my laptop also has no problems.
However, if a wireless connection is made, it is broken when my laptop is restarted or sleeps (power saving mode).  The sysTray indicates a wireless connection that has "limited or no connectivity".  I cannot browse the internet.  The EasyLink advisor automatically detects a problem and prompts ot repair it.  Though after a few steps the EasyLink Advisor indicates that a "wireless connection failed to be made", the sysTray shows a healthy connection, and it becomes possible to browse at this point.
I'm hoping to make a connection that doesn't need to be re-established every time I leave my computer.  Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Carrot, thanks very much for your message. I tried updating the "firmware" -- is that what you meant by drivers?
By following the instructions at http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4030&lid=7771778881B05,
I upgraded the firmware which involved performing a factory reset on the router, and re-establishing the network using the EasyLink Advisor.
All of the steps were carried out easily according to the instructions and there were no hitches or exceptions. The wireless connection made was strong and usable. At this time I added my second (desktop) computer which has a wired connection, by following the "add another computer" wizard in EasyLink Advisor.
This completed the re-setup of my network with new firmware.
I then restarted my wireless laptop, and, unfortunately, the connection was lost, as usual.
    any other suggestions?
    Thanks again!

    Hi all,

The right direction would be posting more info and checking some chardware is applicable: are you using wired or wireless, if wired, check the cable, restart the router if you're using one, are you using dhcpcd or some other app etc. etc.

  • Wireless connection lost upon wake from sleep

I recently joined the 21st century and purchased broadband internet for my home. I am connecting via wireless ethernet using an original Airport card and flying-saucer type base station. All I did was connect the base station to the cable modem with an ethernet cable, plug it in, and restart my eMac. The network showed up right away and I was connected. Unfortunately, after my Mac went to sleep and I woke it up, not only was there not a connection, but there was no sign of the network.
Airport status showed it was still on, but in the spot where the networks show there was nothing. Restarting corrected the problem, but I assume only until it sleeps again. I can change the settings to make it monitor-only sleep, but I would like a more permanent solution.
What might help to fix the problem, and was there something I needed to do besides just turn my machine off and on to set up this network?
    Thanks.

If you pose this problem over in the Airport or Tiger networking forums, you'll find you've stumbled into a morass of conflicting reports. There have been a disturbing number of reports of Airport connections lost in Tiger after wake from system sleep, usually not reconnected until after a restart. Some people have some success checking the box to put the Airport icon in the menubar ans using that to turn Airport off, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on, yet others have reported that only works part of the time and others report it doesn't work at all. Some have reported improvement after downloading and running the full OS X Update Combo 10.4.10 (PPC) on top of an OS updated via Software Update. And the large majority of Airport users never report any problems at all using Tiger. It really sounds like there's no one cause and no one fix.
There is a workaround: don't let the Mac go into system sleep. Use the Energy Saver system preference to set system sleep to Never, uncheck the 'put hard drives to sleep when possible' box, and set the display-only sleep to say 20 minutes. If the eMac is in a bedroom and the sleepers are sensitive to fan noise or power LED lights, that will be a problem, but likely less aggravating than losing your broadband connection.

  • Wireless connection lost between my router and printer (hp officejet 4620)

My hp officejet 4620 printer has been working fine but now the wireless connection has been lost and I can't get the wireless connection back. The blue light for the wifi flashes blue. I can't get the connection back between the router and the printer because my wifi is actually working fine with my laptop. Any suggestions about what i can do to get the connection back so I can print again?
Is it something I need to do on the printer screen or laptop to fix the problem?

Have you powered off everything and power up again?  Power off printer and router.  Power on router and wait 2 mins.  Power up printer and see if it connects to your SSID.
