Wireless - ipw2100 on laptop

Hello there, I'm a new arch user and I'm having trouble setting up the wireless on my laptop. I followed the guidelines on the wiki but it still doesn't work, so I would appreciate it if someone could help.
I disabled the router's protection, so I know it has nothing to do with that.
Wireless: ipw2100
I installed wireless_tools and the ipw2100 firmware.

I think you've got your iwconfig and ifconfig commands the wrong way around. Configure your wireless with iwconfig and then bring the interface up with ifconfig. Then dhcp as you have been trying to do.
Note that your output from iwconfig eth1 was all wrong (lots of zeros:)), nothing was going work after that.

Read another post in the forum about this and it appears this app also installs a profile with a proxy service that you will have to try and delete as well. Check that out.

  • Cant find the Driver for my Wireless on my Laptop

    Hi Everyone,
So I have been trying to fix my Laptop for some time now. I use to have windows Vista on this Laptop then upgraded to Windows 7. Now everything is perfect but for some reason I cannot find the correct Driver for my Wireless on this laptop. I have tried searching and searching for countless hours and even went on the website and let it detect the system and suggest me the drivers but it doesnt seem to pick up my Windows 7. I have tried the Vista before and it did not work as well. So I am really hoping someone on this forum could help me out. You would make my life sooooo much easier : )

    Hi:
Install the above driver and that will install both the ethernet driver and co-processor driver.
You have a problem with the wireless card...could be minor, could be major.
The wireless card is missing from the device manager.
Install this software, reboot, and see if you can turn on the wireless card by using this software.
    http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=3357379&swItemId=ob_76368_1&swEnvOid=4052
If that doesn't get the Network Controller device to show up so that you can post the hardware ID for it, then the motherboard is shot.  Power to the slot that the wireless card is connected to has been cut.
Very common problem with the Nvidia chipset motherboards with the amd processors.

I had changed my router that seems to cause the problem

Well how did you install the new router?  New SSID and paraphrase?  You have to input the correct information into your drevices.

  • How to set up full access and limited access wireless networks to laptops

    Dear Apple,
I just received my Apple 1 TB Time Capsule. Can someone please help me with a network configuration I want to set up?
I have a cable modem, and, three computers: a G4 iMAC (system 10.5.5), an Apple MacBook (system 10.5.5), and, a PC laptop.
The Time Capsule is connect directly to the cable modem.
    Regarding the computers:
    (1) I want the G4 iMAC to connect directly, via an Ethernet cable, to the Time Capsule, WITH FULL ALLOWED ACCESS to the Time Capsule and to the back-up function of the Time Machine feature, and, with allowed access to my HP inkjet printer (class 6110);
    (2) I also want the MacBook laptop to wirelessly link to the Time Capsule via the Airport utility on the laptop, and, WITH FULL ALLOWED ACCESS to the Time Capsule and to the back-up function of the Time Machine feature (using WPA/WPA2 security, and, without the network name visible to third parties), and, WITH allowed access to my HP inkjet printer (class 6110);
    (3) I want the PC laptop to wirelessly link to the Time Capsule (using WEP security), but WITHOUT ACCESS to the Time Machine, WITHOUT access to the back-ups on the iMAC, WITHOUT access to the back-ups on the MacBook, and, WITHOUT access to the inkjet printer --- I only want the PC to use the Time Capsule as a WIRELESS ROUTER so that the PC laptop can access the internet.
    (4) And, finally, I want to specify (Time-Capsule/Time-Machine/server ) access ONLY to the iMAC and the MacBook, so that others cannot gain any access.
I specifically need help to set up and configure the Time Capsule so that the PC laptop, as stated above, should have limited access to the Time Capsule --- namely, only to access the internet, and, not even be aware of stored data on the Time Capsule, not even be aware of the inkjet printer, and, not even see my WPA network name when the PC scans for wireless devices.
I also want the iMAC and the MacBook to have access to each other’s data stored on the Time Capsule (like a common server).
I have an old D-Link DI-624 wireless router that I used before buying the Time Capsule, which is available, if needed. Hopefully, I can configure the Time Capsule so that I would not need the old D-Link.
    Thank you in advance,
    David.

The basic method for remote access is not changed.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
    You have a few issues.
The really big one.. the school firewall should not let you connect to home.
Check the IT admin at your school but if they allow anything but a few protocols like http and https through, they are not doing their job. You cannot afford in a large network to have every Tom Dick and Harry access any open device.. that can introduce viruses and trojans into the network behind the firewall.
The general method for remote access on large networks is vpn and the TC offers no vpn connection.. just AFP.
If you intend using 3G wireless stick or the like then you can get access.
The next issue is static public IP or how to find the TC.. you need some way to find the IP if your ISP does not offer static ip, and the tc has no dyndns client. Since Apple shut down new users for mobileme and will close that service there is no method to find the TC IP without owning your own domain. You would be better placing the TC in bridge behind a router that does offer dyndns and port forward AFP (TCP 548) to it.

  • Deskjet 6988 printer to wireless network (Envy laptop w/ Windows 8.1)

I've had my HP Deskjet 6988 printer for years and always had it connected to my desktop via USB 2.0 cable. I purchased a HP Envy laptop with Windows 8.1 and want to connect the printer via my home network/Belkin router, as the USB 2.0 cable that came with the printer doesn't seem to work in the Envy USB ports for direct printing . The software disk didn't work in the laptop, so I downloaded the software and utility (print and scan) software for 8.1 from the HP website.
I ran the downloads, the setup wizard started, said "The wizard will connect to the internet and help you install the best available software for your printer." I clicked next and a window opens "Discovering device" and then another "Retrieving install device" then...nothing.  The wizard window closes. My setup manual is useless. It tells me to use the wizard on the software disk that doesn't work on my laptop (and is outdated and for the wrong OS anyhow, because it was for my desktop, which ran on VIsta.)
I did somehow manage to get the printer installed on the laptop - I can see it under the available printers.  And if I have an ethernet cord connected directly from the printer to my router, it will print. But if I unplug the ethernet cord, it will not print. I can't keep the ethernet cord plugged in for printing, because the router is in my living room, behind the TV and my office is upstairs. I would rather not keep my printer on the living room floor by our TV, so I really need it to work wirelessly!
My problem is - how do I get the printer added to my home network (Belkin  router). The wireless router is all set up and working - I'm actually using it right now to access the internet and post this message.
So, my printer is installed on my laptop. The driver is the most recent, intalled today from HP.com and I don't have a software disk to use for a setup wizard.
What are the next steps to connect my printer to the network, so I can print wirelessly? Hopefully, I've given enough information. I've read all of the help sections on HP.com customer service and none of them seem to tell me what to do.
    Thank you!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Through a lot of trial and error, I actually figured it out  myself. I did a lot of jumping around, so hopefully I remember everything I did:
    1) Install the printer driver using the disk or download.
    2) Connect the printer to the router using an ethernet cable, which looks like a big phone cord (no need to connect the printer to your laptop.)
    3) Bring up the laptop's system "search" on your laptop and in the search type "Network" then click on "Network" link to open it.
    4) You should see the printer icon listed under your computers and other devices already found on the network.
    5) Double click/tap on the printer icon and it will open the printer's "web page" in your browser.
    6) Click/tap the "Networking" tab near the top of the scren.
    7) In the left sidebar, under "Connections," click "Wireless" to open it.
    8) Start and use the wizard to enter your router information. (Make sure to give the printer a distinct name here, so you can distinguish it from any other printers listed on your laptop. For example,  I named mine "Deskjet 6988 Network")
    9) Unplug the ethernet cord from the printer.
    10) If your wireless printer doesn't show up in the list of printers when you go to print something, you have to add it:
    11) Open the laptop system search again and type "Devices and printers" and click/tap the link.
    12)   Click the "Add a Printer" link near the top. The computer will search for printers and the new networked printer should appear in the list (Hint: it wil have an IP address listed under "Address" column rather than a file.)
    13) Add the networked printer and run the test print to make sure it works. Make it your default printer and can delete any of the other 6988 printers listed if you want to.
    14) You should now see your networked printer in the list of printers when you go to print something.
Hope that helps someone else some day!

  • Unreliable wireless communication between laptop (Vista) and Time Capsule

I am using a Time capsule for my wire less router at home. I have a new laptop running vista and the connection fails frequently. It is restored using repair. This does not happen with this laptop in other wireless locations. I also do not have this problem with my older laptop running xp (at least not as often). Any suggestions?
I am thinking of buying a 802.11n card for the laptop. any chances this will help?

Please open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just under the row of icons
What is the setting that you have for "Wireless Mode" on this device?
It should be "Extend a wireless network" and the other settings should match those on the AirPort Extreme.
Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Extreme, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Make sure that you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"

  • Wireless printer for laptop

I am considering buying the HP Officejet 6000 Wirless Printer.  I simply want wireless connection from my laptop to printer (no WAP or LAN).   Laptop is equipped with 802.11 capability.  Will the laptop communicate directly with the printer without a network?  The literature all seems to refer to setting up through or with a network.  Thanks.

If you want a comfortable connection It is advisable for wireless printing to have a network to share your printer among your laptops or desktop....for wireless printing you need to have a router wireless or wired may work....If your laptop has only one NIC or internet card u need to have a router bec once you want connect to the internet you cannot print and while you print you will be disconnected from the internet.....If you have two NIC card installed on your laptop there is no need for a network that is what we called in Adhoc connection (a wireless connection from your printer to your laptop or what we called peer to peer) so if your laptop has only 1 NIc then You need to have a network and a router plus a SSId and a WEP key or WPA key....HEHEHEHEH

  • WRT54G dropping wireless connection on laptop

My laptop (WinXp SP2) is frequently loosing it's wireless connection to my WRT54G router.  It seems to happen on a random basis.  Sometimes, I'll boot the laptop and I'll have my connection, sometimes I won't have it.  When I have the connection, I may loose it for no apparent reason.  It may happens even when my laptop is near the router.  There's no wireless phone close.  Microwave is not working. I'm in an appartment so it might be a wireless channel problem.  I have yet to try that.
I have the lastest firmware upgrade (8.00.2).  I have activated WPA2 security and MAC filtering.  I'm using aes for WPA entryption method.  Naturally, I have downloaded the microsoft patch for WPA2 on the portable. I have tried to change the MTU size to 1498 instead of 1500 to see if anything would change. From my tests, the default value was right on anyway.  I have tried without WPA2 security (just MAC filtering) and I still got the same problem.
I also have a Wii which is connected wirelessly to my router who experience the same problems.  My desktop computer is wired connected to my router and never has any problem.  So it's really just a wireless problem.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
    Thanks

try to change the wireless channel, you could choose from 1-6-11 i suggest 11...and try to check the advnced wireless settings set the beacon interval=50 fragmantation threshold=2304 and RTS threshold=2304
with the mac filtering that you have make sure that the MAC addres of your wireless computer is properly saved there...

  • Wirelessly connecting Windows laptops to an iMac G5 to share files Interne

I am wondering if someone could tell me how I can share files with windows PCs wirelessly but also securely. I have setup a network so that Windows PCs can access my iMac G5 that connects to the Internet through the airport card. I can get the windows PCs (laptops) to access the Internet through my iMac G5's airport card but I also want to share files back and forth wirelessly between the Windows PC laptops and the iMac G5. I am able to view all my iMac G5 files on my Windows PCs but that's not what I want. Isn't there a way to make it more secure so that only a shared folder is available for access by the Windows PCs? Right now if I go into Windows and setup a "My Network Places" then the PC has access to all those files on my iMac and that's not what I want. At this point someone with access to my iMac G5 could just wipe out everything. Not secure at all.
Could you guys give a novice some pointers?
I am still having problems with this. I can get my laptop to share my internet connection with my mac, but once I set a password on my Mac--well I can't get my laptop to connect. It is quite strange.
Someone suggested me to look here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1161.html
I tried to follow the directions on the link he suggested, but I'm using OS 10.3.9, so maybe that is the reason the directions are not exactly the same for my system.
Right now, I can open the System Preferences, go to Sharing preferences, turn on windows sharing...but that's as far as I can get.
Do you know if there is any document that can show me how to securely share files with a windows PC for my version of Mac OS?
I would also like a way to share files from my iMac to the Windows PC as well.
I have successfully been able to get my Windows Vista laptop sharing the internet connection with my iMac. The problem is that this connection is insecure, so therefore anyone can connect.
I have no idea and have not had luck finding any fix for this by browsing/search the knowledge database.
How can I set it so that anyone that wants to use the shared Ethernet connection (via my airport) has to input a password?
Every time I try to associate a password with the connection, my laptop is unable to share the connection any longer.
Windows will just tell me that the wireless connection is incompatible because of the security features of that network. It doesn't even ask me to input the password.
Besides this, I still am unable to get the file sharing to work. Is this because I'm also trying to share an internet connection between the two computers?? or...
After working on this problem for awhile, I've found some helpful information on the web that refers to connecting a Vista computer to a MAC with OS 10.5. Even though this is the case, I got my iMac to share it's internet connection and now I'm able to access the Windows vista laptop files on my iMac. I still, however, am unable to access the files on my iMac through the laptop. I've followed all the info on this website:

but I'm still not having any luck.
