Wireless keyboard fn key on by default

I just got a new HP Omni-27 desktop (Windows 7 64-bit) which comes with a KG-1162 wireless keyboard.  The problem is that the fn status of the function keys is reversed from what it should be.  As an example, the f10 key dims the display instead of sending an f10 code to the application, and fn+f10 sends an f10 code instead of dimming the display.  This makes the keyboard extremely frustrating when trying to use applications that make heavy use of function keys, like MS Office products and developer IDEs.  Another example is interactive games which require use of the function keys, but you rarely have an extra finger free to also hold down the fn key.  This is analagous to trying to use a keyboard that doesn't have a Caps Lock key, but always acts as if Caps Lock were on.  Of the several keyboards I use in the course of a day, this is the only one that acts this way.  I'd really like to find a way to fix this before I throw this keyboard out and buy one that works as it should.  Here's what I've tried and learned so far:
The very few references I've been able to find in a Google search either suggest things that don't work, or suggest it's a vendor problem.
A chat with HP technical support did not help.
I verified that a non-HP wireless keyboard tethered to a non-HP laptop running Windows 7 acts properly.
I verified that a USB keyboard plugged into my PC works properly.
My previous HP PC running Vista with a different HP wireless keyboard worked properly while it lived.
My conclusion is that the problem is likely tied to the driver for this particular model of wireless keyboard.  Can anyone help with a fix (other than throw it out and use one that works properly)?
This question was solved.

[Updated to add newer info from the keyboard manual.]
The f1 to f11 keys perform as either multimedia keys, or standard function keys. The default is multimedia.
To switch from multimedia to standard function, press the fn+esc keys simultaneously; this locks the keys to standard function. To switch back from standard function to multimedia, press the fn+esc keys simultaneously again.
Pressing the fn key simultaneously with an f1 to f11 key, performs the standard function.
Press fn+fx during system startup to use the function keys to access and utilize the BIOS functions (such as Boot Menu or System Recovery).
If the mouse and keyboard do not respond, refer to the wireless mouse and keyboard troubleshooting information located with your other product documentation.
For better mouse battery life and performance, avoid using your mouse on dark or high-gloss surface, and turn mouse power off when not in use.
Please let me know if this solves your problem!

To my knowledge, no. If you are near an Apple store take the KB in for diagnosis.

  • WIreless keyboard shift key problem

I have an Apple wireless keyboard which was working fine for the past 10 months, until this morning. Now, when I press the shift key, it types an "I" and whatever other key I hit. Also, there are occasional random capital letters when I type without pressing the shift key. I've tried things like resetting the PRAM, going into keyboard preferences and resetting to the defaults, and unpairing/repairing the keyboard to my iMac. It is definitely the keyboard, as I plugged in the USB keyboard from my daughter's iMac, and that works fine. Also, I've tried to get support, but can't get past Apple telling me my serial number is invalid (Thanks so much to srodney for a VERY clear explanation of how to find that miniscule serial number!)
Thanks for any help you can give!

Keyboard: lower case letter or letters stop working.
Friends, I have solved this problem and used it several times successfully. In my case, it was the lower case “a”, the only letter that would not register and because my password contains an “a” I could not even restart and log in without a work-around. Tried numerous keyboards, cables, and all the rest. A safe boot fixed the problem so I knew it was a corruption glitch. Short version: I just did this two hours ago - July 18, 2009 - only the second or so time in a year, although it took me a lot of preference experimentation the first time to sniff it out.
In my case, went to my “user/library/preferences” folder and dragged onto the desktop the preference “loginwindow.plist” (not the one that starts "com.apple", at least in my case I didn’t need to get rid of that one). Restart and voila! Problem solved. Trash the old "loginwindow.plist" as a new one is created when you restart and you lose no data. To their credit, Apple was very helpful back when it happened the first time, and it was a real conundrum to them as well. I got lucky that it was not too obscure a problem so I didn't have to go through all the preferences and remove them one by one for hours. I found the guilty party fast. Now ya know! Maybe it'll work for you. And a general thanks to all the good people who write these notes and have saved my sanity many, many times. Finally a chance to pay it forward.

  • Wireless keyboard function keys don't work even though updated

    Hi,
like i read in different threads, many others had this problem too.
The function keys of my bluetooth keyboard (aluminium 2009) don't work even though i did firmware update for mighty mouse AND the keyboard firmware update. I also unset the option 'use function keys with fn......' option in system preferences. I also tried disconnecting and connecting the device. In system profiler the entry says it is (still) firmware version 80.
    What can i do?
    I'm thankful for any hint.
    Best, Jörg

Wanting to buy a keyboard and reading this thread (and others), I went to a local Best Buy. They had quite a few of the wireless keyboards out. They had MC184LL(A) models and (B) models.
ALL of the (A) models worked perfectly with the iPad (typing, brightness, volume, ipod functions, etc).
NONE of the (B) models worked other than basic typing.
They had a stack of maybe 50 new wireless keyboards on the shelf. All but two of them were (B) models.
I bought one of the two (A) models. It is working perfectly on my iPad.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard 'o' key not working

I have recently acquired a pre-owned wireless keyboard which was working fine until a few days ago. Now the 'o' key has stopped working and some keys do not work with the left shift key - they work fine with the right-shift key and other keys work with left-shift.
I have checked the key using the keyboard viewer and the 'o' is not highlighted highlighted when the key is pressed. I can type 'o' characters using the keyboard viewer.
I have tried pairing the keyboard with another mac and it has the same symptoms on that machine so I don't think it is a software problem or a problem with SVC, PRAM or Bluetooth on the mac ( late-2012 Mac Mini).
I have tried to look for solutions here and in other forums but none of the suggested solutions seem to work.
    Any suggestions?

I would reset the PRAM. If that does not work, I suspect it is failing and/or failed.
I agree, it is not a Bluetooth problem.

  • Wireless keyboard - return key has stopped working.

The return key on my wireless keyboard has just stopped functioning along with the backslash key to the left of it.  Any ideas as to the likely cause, or has it just packed up? I'm having to use the keyboard viewer or the old USB keyboard for these functions - which is a pain.

    Hello:
Try resetting the PRAM and SMC.  If that does not help, I would suspect a failed KB.

  • Wireless keyboard function keys

    Hi,
After replacing the batteries of my wireless keyboard I can no longer use any of the mac-specific functions of the function keys (adjusting volume, brightness, etc).
I've checked this and other forums and have found people experiencing similar problems, but no solutions. There's some references to a checkbox in the keyboard preferences, but that isn't there in my preferences pane.
How do I get this functionality back?
    Thanks!

Are you in the "Keyboard" tab of the "Keyboard" system preference?

  • Apple wireless keyboard function keys don't work with ipad2

I have a brand new ipad2 and just purchased an apple wireless keyboard. The keys work fine for typing, but the keys across the top don't seem to work at all. I play music, but none of the music control keys work. The keys on functions 1..12 appear to be totally dead.
I have seen several posts from people who seem to have this problem, but I see no answers. Did I purchase a lemon or what?

  • New wireless keyboard hot keys

Hi i have just bought the new Apple wireless keyboard and have found that the hot keys across the top dont all work. I am currently still running tiger with the latest updates. i was told there is a keyboard update but have been un able to find it on the website. Any ideas on where to find the update or another solution to getting them to work, i find them quite handy and used them frequently on my wired keyboard.
    Thanks, Ali

I just accidently answered my own question by pressing the wrong button!! if you dont know how to use them: they work like a laptop keyboard (fn + the F7,F8...) an so on keys so if you want to pause a music track then its fn+ F8.

  • Wireless Keyboard Hash key issue.

Hi. I have a bit of a problem with my brand new (UK version) wireless keyboard: I can't type the "hash" symbol that ought to come up with alt-3 (option-3). When I pull up the keyboard viewer and hold down alt, the "3" does indeed change to the hash symbol, but when I then hit "3" nothing appears. This is true in any application: Firefox, Safari, Word, Mail, even the Dashboard StickyNotes.
Can anyone think of a reason that my ability to type the hash might somehow have been switched off? All my software is up to date via Software Update. I'm puzzled and would be grateful for any advice.
(It's making life on Twitter pretty tedious...)

The "Use all F1 etc keys as standard function keys" tab isn't selected. It says "when this option is selected, press the Fn key to use the specal features printed on each key". Problem being there is no "Fn" key. So I suppose this option will just turn off the special function on these keys?

  • Wireless Keyboard Function Keys Always On

    Hi,
I just started using my wireless keyboard and noticed that the function keys are always activated, making it impossible to turn up/down the volume, etc. How do I go back to regular mode?

    check it
"I installed the keyboard update and unchecked "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" in Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences and everything works perfect. This is on a G5 Tower.

  • New Apple Wireless Keyboard Function Key not working ON 10.5.8

Tried updating keyboard os, disconecting reconnecting. Selecting/deselecting option in keyboard options.  power off and on
Cannot get function key to work
    Thanks

found answer here- my wireless keyboard model is  MC184LL/B
    http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/product/MB110LL/B?pqid=QXXHTX4T747AAF PXKHXCC72CYAXYU7XXYUPK9UFC74K27FPKF
The Function keys will not all work properly on 10.5.8, all the other keys will be fine.  The previous model MB110LL/A would work with all the Function keys on Leopard or Snow Leopard.

  • Wireless Keyboard FN Key Not Working

    I have checked this box:
I also tried the Firmware 1.1 update but I got a messege saying:
"No Apple Aluminum Keyboards Found" and I paraphrase "Please connect the device or make sure it is turned on etc."
I also tried the Firmware 2.0 update but got the same message. I can't physically connect the Wireless Keyboard to the Mac Mini I have. It's wireless FFS.
I ALSO Installed the Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1 and that didn't help
Also I tried some advice from a forum mentioning a SMC or System Management Controller via these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
But nothing is allowing me to use my FN keys anymore. This is annoying because I thoroughly enjoyed volume control from my keyboard. Now it's gone.
This all started when my old keyboard broke and I got a new one. I want my volume control back! Help me please before I jump out the window!

    Hi.
My FN key is not working either. I have a macbook white (10.5.8) and a brand new apple wifi keyboard.
F9 to F12 keys are working. F1 to F4 keys are not working.
I've gone thought many posts (some are listed bellow). In short, I did the following already:
    - keyboard software update
    - keyboard firmware update
    - magic mouse software update (because some posts suggested that more than one Bluetooth device, like magic mouse, could interfere on Bluetooth keyboard operation.
    - SMC reset (above in this post).
Most posts were saying  "uncheck the "use F1, F2......", then recheck it. This didn't work for me.
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance.
    Gus.

  • Wireless Keyboard Delete Key not working properly

Recently, my wireless keyboard's delete key has been malfunctioning. Instead of erasing right to left, it deletes left to right. This is without pressing other buttons such as the fn key. Also, the left and right keys do not move the cursor properly such as in the address bar. They only move the page up and down. It works normally right at start up and after I restart the computer but after a few minutes it goes back. Is there a problem with my settings or the keyboard itself? Thank you for your help!

    Hello:
I do not know of a setting that would do that - especially intermittently.
I would suspect the KB is failing/has failed.
