Wireless Radio Connection - switches off

My Wireless Radio Connection switches off after about 2-3 minutes.  Is there a setting I can adjust to lengthen this amount of time?  When it shuts off, all I have to do is FN5 to reconnect but I shouldn't have to do that every 3 minutes.  I have a T60.  Thank you.

Assuming your're using a version of Windows, use the Device Manager and configure the Advanced Properties
DISABLE /UNCHECK "ALLOW WINDOWS TO TURN OFF DEVICE TO CONSERVE POWER"
Next, ensure all the PowerManager settings are set to a a Max Performance / Vid Presentation Profile but this doesn't necessarily ensure the WiFi NIC could be turned off if you or someone else has tuned the power profiles to disable NIC's after whatever period of time
It doesn't hurt to verify within the BIOS PCI PowerMgmt IS ENABLED and the Smart CPU settings are activated.
If the issue is still occurring then load an alnternate Operating system, Knoppix or SLAX Live BOOT CD's enable the loading and execution of a featured LINUX kernel with driver support for most Thinkpads since it seems te developers of the LIVE CD's use thinkpads themselves or MAC's, it is likely the latest Knoppix distro is compatible with your NIC and observe whether or not the issue still occurs / if so then you can most likely attribute it to an odd hardware issue and you should begin researching whether or not a BIOS upgrade or even Downgrade is a solution.
Before flashing, it is worth taking note of the fact the intermittent power issues seem to be related to your Windows build and you should install a parallel installation of any compatible Windows version then install the barebones necessary drivers to determine if the power issues still occur on a freshly minted version of Windows.
Also, determine whether or not your actual WiFi NIC is flashable, modern network adapaters have increased in complexity especially as a necessity of WOL and the Intel SLM features that more corporate purchasers demand thus NIC's have increased in complexity becoming more like mini VX systems with flashable firmware which may have merit as a solution if you isolate it to your hardware.

  • T61 - Intell 4965AGN - Wireless radio is powered off

I am getting to wits end trying to get my wifi connection to work.  I NEED HELP!!!
I just purchased a Lenovo T61.  It came with Vista which I despise!!!!  So I decided to install XP.  I didn't want to eliminate Vista since I develop programs for windows and want to keep Vista around for testing purposes.  I partitioned the hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro SP2.   After about 3 weeks of research and installs, un-installs and re-installs and then finally getting ThinkVantage Update installed and letting it get everything updated I think I have a pretty good setup.  Except for the wifi adapter.
The computer came with the two LAN connections.  A gigabit adapter for wired connections and an Intell 4965AGN wifi adapter.  I am using ThinkVantage Access Connections.  I prefer to keep this because I use the laptop at home, work and on the road.  Access Connections gives me the capability to save a separate IP configuration for each location.  That is worth a lot.
The wifi switch on the front of the T61 is switched on.  If I bring up Fn-F5 it shows the "Hardware Wireless Radio Switch" as ON.
I am able to get the gigabit connection to work without issue.  But I can't get the wifi adapter to work.  If I bring it up on Device Manager I see the 4965AGN under Network Devices.  If I bring up the Properties dialog it shows "Wireless On" on the Advanced tab and the Driver tab lists a driver version 11.5.0.36 dated 11/27/2007.  The toolbar shows the wifi icon with a red X showing that it is not connected.  If I click on "View Wireless Connections" I get the message that Windows cannot manage that wireless connection.
So I start Access Connections and start setting up a new wireless connection.  I identify the connection as wireless and move to the second page titled "Enter wireless network configuration:".  I give it an SSID and click on "Find Network".  I immediately get a pop-up stating "The wireless radio is powered off.  Do you want to power it on?".  I click on "Yes" and that dialog goes away.  But nothing on the entry page changes.  None of the drop downs are populated.  If I click on "Find Network" again I get the same message.
I have tried re-loading the wifi drivers from the Lenovo web page with no change.  How can I fix this?

I think I have a solution to this. It worked for me. I wandered into this forum and found people with the same issues. I have just fixed my R61i. It was a Vista which I downgraded to an XP ( it was doing my head in)..
Everything went well, apart from the wireless not showing in access... it worked, but only outside. I too LOVE the access program.
This is how I fixed it..
    I went here
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62875
I then downloaded the patch and installed it. I was curious in that the "Intel Proset Wireless Software was NOT in my program list (under Add/Remove Software)
I ran the install (its clear in the instructions where to find it) page 3 under Manual install.
I restarted and ping... up came a new icon, and gone was the initial freeze at startup time (which was happening every now and again)
I love my R61i. I love it even better now it works under XP and works with access. Although Mine is an R61i  A lot of T models are listed at the top of the solution. Print off the  full text and read it whilst you work through.. Good Luck
I have registered just to pass this on because a few of you above seemed stumped, just like I was.

  • Solve X200s the wireless radio randomly turned off/disconnected

I had exactly an issue on my x200s. The wireless radio randomly turned off, and Window 7 was frozen, no response. It took me a lot of time to figure it out. Eventually, it worked out.
Please go to "Lenovo access connections", and find the "tools" tab. In the "global setting", uncheck "Allow the wireless lan radio to be turned off when inactive".
This is going to solve your problem. I worked for me.
    Hope this help.

FWIW, I think the ThinkVantage software just sucks. On my X200 the wifi would drop constantly, every 3 to 5 minutes.  Driver upgrade, software upgrade, settings etc didnt change anything. I wiped the entire hard drive and installed linux, and I haven't seen a drop since.  Maybe try just using the windows wifi to manage your connections.  It could also be related to the power management dropping the wifi, which would also be the ThinkVantage.

  • Can I disable my Verizon Fios Router Wireless radio, connect it to a switch and use my airport express as my wireless access point connected to an in wall ethernet port?

Here's the deal.  I have a Verizon Fios MI424WR router.  My house has CAT5 throughout the house.  The media panel is located in the garage.  I want to take the Verizon Fios Router and cannot it in the media panel so I can connect a switch to it, that way, all my CAT5 can fire throughout the house. Verizon being Verizon decided to connect the router directly in the office.
Can I go this route (Router in media panel, switch cross connect to it) and use Airport Express, connected to one of the in-wall CAT5 ports in my house and then set it up as my wireless access point to provide wifi to my portable devices (iPad, iPhone, Macbook)?  Is this possible? Will Airport Express comminicate with my verizon router via ethernet in-wall? Do I have to turn off the wireless radio in the Verizon router?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That is right, by hard wired I was just making clear wired vs wireless attachment.  AirPort family of devices will only act in a repeater mode with their own family members, not FiOS routers.  they have to be wired to work.
There are some useful docs you can download from Apple, Support, Manuals, Peripherals, AirPort (just follow thos links from the Support button on the top bar):
    Apple AirPort Networks
    Designing AirPort Networks
    AirPort Express Setup Guide
The last has a diagram of what you are trying to do, though without the house wiring, etc., but the basic principle.

  • T500 Wireless radio is always off.

I have set the wireless switch on, checked the Device Manager, and done the Fn-5 thing.  Nothing, it seems, will turn the radio on. I am using Windows 7 and I know that the hardware works because it worked for the first three days I had the computer.  I have spent days looking for a solutions. All drivers have been checked and are up to date.
The wireless adapter installed is the Intel WiFi Link 5400 AGN.  The Lenovo site suggests that I should be looking for a LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter - this seems to be missing. There is no instruction about what to do if this does not appear in the list of Network Adapters.  Is this my problem - and if so, how do I correct it.? Any other suggestions, please?

Try going to the device manager and uninstall and installing the wifi card. this should solve the issue.

  • Wireless radio turns off every 2 minutes

I have a Thinkpad Z60t, running Windows XP.
I have the physical wireless switch on the side panel set to the on position (i.e. to the right).
Initially, I am able to connect to any wireless network without a problem. However, after about 2 minutes of not actively using the internet, the green "wireless radio" status light on the front panel turns off and I lose my internet connection. I then have to do "Fn + F5" (or ThinkVantage button -> Manage My Connections -> Power On/Off Wireless Radios) to turn it back on (and get the status light to be green again). I then have to reconnect to the wireless network.
I believe this is a common issue. I have tried several suggestions I found on other forums, including ThinkVantage button -> Manage My Connections -> Select Location Profiles -> Open Access Connections -> Configure -> Location Switching -> UNSELECT "Enable automatic location switching". This method actually seemed to work for a few hours, but then stopped.
I am certain that my wireless network is stable - my roommate's laptop does not lose the signal every 2 minutes like I do. I think my laptop's wireless radio automatically shuts off after 2 minutes of no use, and this feature needs to be disabled somehow.
Please help. I am getting frustrated of having to manually reconnect every 2 minutes.

  • Can't power on Wireless Radio Access Connections ver. 5.83 build 83C753WW

I had the wireless working just fine.  I did a System Update and now I can't get the Wireless Radio to power on for the life of me.
I've tried many things.  I read many many other problems that sound the same but they are working with older version of Access Connections and most of them are working with XP.
I'm working with Win7 64bit Professional on a Thinkpad L512.  Windows has all the updates available.  The only way I know of to turn on the radio is with <Function> F5.  I see the 802.11 Wireless Radio in the Off state.  I see the power button.  When I select the power button nothing happens.
I have replaced the hard drive and loaded the recovery disks.  Then the wireless works just fine.  So I know it's not a hardware issue.  When I put the original hard drive back in I can't get the radio to power on.  I have removed and reinstalled a number of pieces of software in a specific order but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks,

  • C7250 wireless radio shows off

I just installed a new router and when setting up my printer ( HP 7250)it  published a diagnostic report saying "wireless radio is not functioning"  What can I do to get it back on?

Here is what I found in the manual to turn the wireless radio back on:
Turn the wireless radio on and off
The wireless radio is off by default. In order to stay connected to a wireless network, the
radio must stay on. When the radio is on, the blue light on the front of the HP All-in-One
is lit. However, if the HP All-in-One is connected to a wired network or you have a USB
connection, the radio is not used. In this case you might want to turn the radio off.
    1. On the control panel of the HP All-in-One, press Setup.
    2. Press until Network is highlighted, and then press OK.
    3. Press until Wireless Radio is highlighted, and then press OK.
    4. Press to highlight On or Off, and then press OK.
    Print the wireless network test
The wireless network test performs a series of diagnostic tests to determine whether
network setup is successful. The wireless network test prints automatically when the
Wireless Setup Wizard is run. You also can print the wireless network test at any time.
    1. On the control panel of the HP All-in-One, press Setup.
    2. Press until Network is highlighted, and then press OK.
    3. Press until Wireless Network Test is highlighted, and then press OK.
    The Wireless Network Test prints.

  • Wireless stopped working, can't power on 'wireless radio'

All of sudden my wireless stopped working on my T60.  While trying to solve the problem, i noticed my 'wireless radio' is off (when i clicked 'fn+F5' to check),  and i cannot power it on from here.  I'm guessing this is the problem, but can't figure out how to turn it on again.  (My switch is on the front of the laptop for wireless radio is switched on.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Please try a system restore, it´s the simpliest way to get back to work.

  • Optical audio in Lion switches off after 30 seconds

I have a new iMac 27" Computer purchased November 2010 with Snow Leopard on. I have upgraded to Lion OS the day it came out.
When I started using it, I noticed that the Optical steam (red beam) would switch off after roughly 30 seconds. I researched this issue and found that OS X powers down the Sound Hardware after 30 seconds if not used, as it is fine under Bootcamp with Windows 7.
So I used a program called Sound 1.0,1 to stop the Optical connection switching off, by playing a silent sound every 20 seconds. But now Lion does not support PowerPC programs by Rosetta, so am back to the original problem, that if the hardware has switched off, I miss the first 2 or 3 seconds of the start of the audio, like Skype announcing that some has signed in / out or on MSN as a message notification.
Any ideas to sort this annoying problem be most grateful.

    Thanks for your help Andrew.
Have tried that and seems to be working at the mo (touch wood). See how it goes.

  • WT200 3G - Wireless connection manager says radio is turned off

Can someone please help. I have a WT200 tablet and am trying use/setup the 3G component..
But the Wireless connection manager keeps telling me that the radio is turned off.
There are no switches and i have searched the net for a solution however I have seen the same question but not the answer.
    HELP ME! PLEASE!

WT200 tablet does not contain an physical switch to enable WLan. You should ensure that Wireless Communication function (in Win 7 settings) is ON !!!
You can do that in Start -> control panel -> network and internet -> network and sharing center
here tap Set up new connection or network
At least you should go to: Start -> All Programs ->Toshiba -> network & Connectivity -> Wlan indicator settings
and could display the system Wlan connection status

  • Windows 7 64 bit has problems with Actiontec MI424WR while wired with wireless radio off

I have discovered an issue with Windows 7 64 bit OS.  My attempted set up was to havea 802.11n Belkin Play router connected to my Actiontec MI424WR router as a wireless access point with the MI424WR wireless radio turned off.  This worked fine for my XP 32 bit PC, my Windows 7 32 bit PC, and my 2 Windows 7 64 bit laptops using wireless.  A problem arose when I tried wired connections on the Windows 7 64 bit laptops and a Windows 7 64 bit PC.
While wired, internet would drop either completely or intermittently but too frequently to be useful.  Tech support had no idea what to do or what caused it.  It was reproducible after a reset of the router and then turning off the wireless radio.
I could fix it by turning on the wireless radio again, but I had hoped to turn it off and only use wireless from the 802.11n router.
    Any ideas?
    Brian

Did you disconnect wireless on the 2 Windows 7 64 bit machines while testing wired?
What is the connection between the Actiontec and the Belkin?  LAN-to-WAN or LAN-to-LAN?
If the connection is LAN-to_LAN, the wireless connection on each machine would have obtained a DHCP address from the Actiontec.  When you connected wired, you would have gotten a new IP address based on the different MAC address of the wired NIC, resulting in the machine having 2 IP addresses.  This may not be readily apparent on the Actiontec main status page as the second connection will get a generated name of "new-host-xx" (the router can't reuse the same PC name for 2 different IP addresses).  Windows should be able to keep the two connections on the same subnet straight, but I've seen WIndows do stranger things.
If the connection is LAN-to-WAN, the Belkin must have a different subnet address than the Actiontec (e.g.. 192.168.2.x).  Now, if you connect both wired to the Actiontec (192.168.1.x) and wireless via the Belkin (192.168.2.x), Windows is going to have connections to two different subnets with two different gateway routers. Without explicit routing rules, Windows won't know which gateway to use.
