Wireless zd1211 bug

Driver is zd1211. Problem seen in these posts:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=30141
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=30873
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=31178
Affects 2.6.20.X kernel series.
I have the same issue (my wireless card seems not to be usable through driver while driver is correctly loaded) and more.
In kernel 2.6.19-beyond and 2.6.19-suspend2 I can't associate my access point to the card:
iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID ap XX:XX:XX:XX
or
iwconfig wlan0 essid MYESSID ap any
gives:
Access point:  Not Associated
In the past (1 or 2 months ago) I used my card correctly.
Nowadays I tried different configurations of my network to solve issue: no hope. Actually my ap is opened without encryption with dhcp (yes... configuration "kill my net if you want!!!") and no changes.
So problem IS NOT:
- wpa
- access point configuration
- driver loading
- netcfg
- dhcp
I suspect some issue between iwconfig and driver. With wifi-radar output is:
"wlan0: interface does not support scanning"
but if I try I CAN'T associate ap manually either.
Any idea on how to manage this issue?

I'll try it... but in the meanwhile there is something strange in the PKGBUILD. I modified a couple of lines.

  • OS 10.6.5 Wireless Networking Bug?

I recently purchased a used Mac Mini Model A1176 (1.83GHz Core 2 Dual, 1GB Ram, Airport Extreme 802.11a/b/g) which came with OS 10.6.4. The first time I fired it up I was able to log into my wireless home network (Verizon DSL, Linksys WRT-54G Wireless Router, WPA Personal security). The signal strength was max. The next day I downloaded and installed OS 10.6.5 and low and behold was not able to log into my network! For starters, my signal strength was now half. Login attempts produced Connection Timeouts, Invalid Password, etc... Keep in mind I have a Macbook on OS 10.6.4 that was login all this time. I brought the Mini to work and was able to login into my office wireless network (Verizon DSL, Verizon Wireless Router, WEP 128 security), thus eliminating an Airport Extreme defect. Back at home I tried changing and eliminating my wireless security to no avail. I found no solutions in the many forums I searched. Finally I formatted and installed OS 10.6.0 and bingo it was working correctly again and has since. Not sure what to make of this. Posting this for a heads up to all my Mac buddies.

I updated Sunday night, installed and rebooted as I walked out of the room to go to bed. Monday afternoon when I got in from work, wireless was down. I have an AT&T Motorola/Netopia 3347 wireless router/modem. I have done the following:
    1) Reset the modem.
    2) Zapped the mini's PRAM.
    3) Reset the SMC.
    4) Deleted and recreated the airport network (System Prefs>Network)
    5) Changed the network name.
    6) Changed the network channel several times (Default was 6, I changed to 1 and then to 4).
    7) Took the modem from B+G to B only. And back again. Nothing worked.
    8) Fixed permissions (Disk Utility).
    9) Changed security protocol from WEP to WPA and finally to none.
    10) Of course I have power cycled the Netopia.
    11) I called AT&T Tech Support... wasn't their fault.
    12) I hooked up my old 2Wire wireless modem that resets itself every 20 minutes (which is why it was in the closet) and it worked with my iPod Touch and with my work laptop (a Dell), but not the Mini running 10.6.5.
    13) I rebooted countless times.
Apple, I may never forgive you for this one. I finally rewired my telephone cording and ran it through my ceiling and down the wall across the room so I could put the modem on the desk and use the Ethernet cord -- which is the only thing that works.
OS X 10.6.5 was highly flawed and this kind of release is totally unacceptable. I want my two days back.
Now: My iPod Touch and the Dell work wirelessly but the Mini is on ethernet duty.

  • Wireless access bug to Netgear with latest Leopard release

I have a Powerbook G4 1.5 mhz who's wireless networking worked fine before upgrading to release 10.5.2. I've observed exactly the same behavior in a Powerbook G4 1.67 mhz. As soon as the computer finds the Netgear signal, it state's there's a problem connecting to it. Moreover, when attempting to reconnect to it, the airport access point finder has the lock icon next to the Netgear even though there is no protection on it. An active connection can be made only by running through "diagnostics". The connection works only until the computer goes to sleep. Upon reawakening, the same problem reappears. Again, it worked fine prior to installation of 10.5.2 and I know it's not a hardware failure as the symptoms occur with both the 1.5 mhz and the 1.67 mhz Powerbook G4's. It works fine with PC laptops.
When is Apple going to fix this in a Leopard update? Does anyone have a workaround, please?
    thanks,
    Roger

I have had the same odd issue with Netgear routers.
My friend's older Powerbook G4 running 10.4 connects fine, and shows NETGEAR as an open network. On her new iMac and on my MacBook, the same router shows up as NETGEAR (oddly, in bold in the list of signals) and the "locked" icon next to it.
I can't figure out why one operating system/machine would connect seamlessly to this as an open network, and two newer systems/machines would treat it as locked and un-joinable.
Is this a known 10.5 issue or something?

  • Wireless headphones bug

My iPod touch headphone jack stopped working so I got wireless headphones and they only play out of one side. Why?

I would try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If still a problem then it is time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • ISE 1.2 Redirect using CWA Wireless

Once a wireless user is authenticated to a WLAN using CWA and ISE, what are the parameters that can cause the user to be deauthenticated and redirected to the web portal?  The session timeout and user idle timeout in this scenario are set to 24 hours.  What else could cause the user to be redirected to the portal?

Its a wireless controller bug.  You will have to get an engineering build from Cisco to resolve.

  • Wacom Wireless random brush strokes

    Hi everybody!
Has anyone tested Wacom Intuos4 Wireless tuned with PhotoShop CS5 on MAC OSX Leopard (10.5.8)?
The thing is whenever I work wirelessly with any of brush/brushlike tools (brush itself, dodge, burn, sharpen, blur etc.)) in Photoshop CS5, straight lines are triggered randomly every now and then. Some guys on the forum have experienced a similar problem on Windows 7.
I’ve tried (heaps of times and applying different sequencies) the following for the remedy:
    Uninstalled the driver
    Unpaired Wacom Tablet
    Updated PS5 (12.0.4 update)
Set PS5 to its default settings
    Cleaned iMac
    Repaired Disk Permissions
Reinstalled the driver (tried 4 different releases including the newest one).
    Paired Wacom back etc...
etc ...as advised by Wacom support team.
Alas! None of the methods have worked.
I would really appreciate if anybody can cast some light on how to resolve the issue (prevent PS5 drawing/retouching tools from randomly triggering unwanted strokes).
    Cheers!
P.S. I'm currently on Intel based iMac, OSX Leopard 10.5.8, 32 bit

    Thanks Grant H!
Leopard 10.6 and latest versions are Leopard Snow updates. I'm currently on Leopard 10.5.8.
If I knew for sure that Leopard Snow fixes the bug, I would buy/upgrade to a newer OSX. It might as well be a Wacom Wireless "hardware bug", as one of a technical support representatives said when I called Wacom for help. I'm still looking for similar bugs from other www community guys. None relevant info has been found yet.
Probably, I need more feedback from the members of our Forum.
    Cheers anyway, Grant H!

  • IPhone 5 Battery Indicator and Reboot issues

    Hello Apple community forum,
I have an iPhone 5 that I purchased approximately 20 months ago. It has worked flawlessly and been well taken care of. Only until recently, maybe 3 weeks after I updated to IOS update 7.1.1, I have been having a plethora of issues and now the phone is virtual useless. I have not jailbroken it or have had any third party hardware installed. It all started when I plugged in my Apple lightening cable for charging and an error appeared "unsupported charging cable". From there I have experienced the following problems:
Battery indicator stuck while charging at any various percentage or during normal use and standby. Only a reboot will provide current charge status.
    Extremely fast battery drain.
Unexpected reboots at various intervals or while accessing Apps or browsers. Sometimes very frequent. One day had at least 60 reboots. one right after the other.
    Cannot turn on or off
Shuts off when I put it in my pocket.
    BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)
Screen exhibits lines or odd characters shuts down or reboots.
Time and date at different positions post boot.
Log file full of errors. (Panaic.ips bug type 110 | awdd Wireless | ResetCounter bug type 115| TCCService bug type 167 | Log-Aggregated bug type 193)
The update worked great on the phone and it seemed faster and the battery lasted a bit longer than usual. However, now it is a different story. I was able to backup my phone and offload all my photos on its good day. I was reading the support site and following a few of these forums. I follow the soft and hard rest procedures and even restored the phone back to factory default (DFU mode). It does seem to run a bit better in default without many apps on it but it still exhibits all the above issues. I bit the bullet and went to the Apple store to talk to one of there G men. He acted surprised and gave me the Apple trained verbal run around. He ran the diagnostic and stated that my battery did not even register as being in the system. From there he opened the phone, inspected it for damage and re-attached the battery and taped it back down. BTW, they hosed my screen cover. Nothing is ever free. They did offer to replace my battery for $80 but did not feel that would solve this problem. If anyone has had this issue and did have a new battery installed, please let me know how that worked out.
I wonder if this latest update exposes some type of hardware flaw that was previously fixed or just a bug(s) in the software code. Yet, Apple does not seem to acknowledge there is a problem let alone advise to any upcoming fix. It does not seem that Apple really cares about my little bit of business. If anyone has any ideas or experience, please let me know. This is frustrating and owning too much of my time. Thanks Apple!

If tried techniques to get the battery to act right, such as rebooting by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, and those things haven't helped, take the iPhone and iPad to the Apple store genius bar and have the technicians test them to see if there is a hardware fault.  Do that before the warranty runs out so you are covered.

  • Problem with OS X.5 Leopard and printing through Airport USB printer

I have just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger and now I can't print. Previously, all 3 of my computers could print to my Samsung printer that is connected to the USB port of the Airport Extreme base station. They could see the Samsung printer through Bonjour and it worked great. Now my computers running Leopard can't see the printer on the wireless network. I've downloaded the latest driver from Samsung and that didn't help. When I connect the printer directly to my Mac tower it prints fine. However I don't want to have the tower on all the time, sharing the printer through the network. It seems to be an issue with Leopard + Bonjour + Airport base station.
    Details:
I have a G5 Tower connected via ethernet to the Airport router.
I also have an intel Mac Mini and a G4 Powerbook 1.67 connected to the Airport through wireless.
The Samsung laser printer is connected to the USB port on the Airport base station.

I too have been bit by the Leopard/wireless printing bug....
Originally, we had two older iMacs running Tiger; both printing to a Lexmark X502n wirelessly via an Airport Express. The set up worked flawlessly for approx. 15 months. A couple of weeks ago, I upgraded to a new (beautiful!) 24" iMac running Leopard. I can print one document, and then like the other posters, the printer shows it's printing, but the printer goes to pause and says it can not connect with host. The Express is on green light, and all the settings are there in the Airport Utility. If I go through the process to "discover" in the Airport Utility, I can then print another page.
But - once the new iMac goes into "printer pause" and needs to be reset, the other older iMac can no longer print. If I reset everything on the new iMac, the other iMac can print as usual - until I print from the new iMac. Lexmark still has no drivers available for this model and Leopard. Past postings on various boards projected they would be available by mid-2008. Obviously, that has not happened. I have contacted Lexmark and they tell me they don't know when drivers will be available. I spent most the day yesterday on the phone with 3 different people at Apple Care. No help other than to say I need the new drivers.
I'd move the laser printer over by my computer and connect via USB, but it is also our fax machine and on a dedicated line. Since we only have the one jack for the second phone line, moving the printer is not an option.
Any help appreciated! I'm ready to go out and buy new cartridges for my old trusty HP inkjet....
The new iMac is connected to a D-Link WBR-2310.
The airport express is connected to the Lexmark X502n via USB.
The wireless network is not secured.

  • Building kernel to install alongsides the one from core

I need to build a kernel with some debug stuff enabled to troubleshoot a bug. I've never done this before and I am in the middle of exams at the university so I am wondering if someone with some experience could help me out here and provide me with a PKGBUILD. I would normally enjoy finding this out myself but I don't have the time to do so at the moment.
I got all files from abs and I modified the config to have CONFIG_LOCALVERSION="-IWL_DEBUG" and the debug stuff I need.
Now I tried compiling the kernel with this PKGBUILD:
    pkgbase="kernel26"
    #pkgname=('kernel26' 'kernel26-firmware' 'kernel26-headers') # Build stock -ARCH kernel
pkgname=kernel26-iwl_debug # Build kernel with a different name
    _kernelname=${pkgname#kernel26}
    _basekernel=2.6.32
    pkgver=${_basekernel}.3
    pkgrel=1
    _patchname="patch-${pkgver}-${pkgrel}-ARCH"
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    license=('GPL2')
    url="http://www.kernel.org"
    source=(ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-$_basekernel.tar.bz2
    ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/kernel26/${_patchname}.bz2
    # the main kernel config files
    config config.x86_64
    # standard config files for mkinitcpio ramdisk
    kernel26.preset)
    md5sums=('260551284ac224c3a43c4adac7df4879'

    '25584700a0a679542929c4bed31433b6')
build() { all inside here unmodified
(so I basically just changed the pkgname var)
And the kernel compiled, but the package was empty... It only contained a .PKGINFO file. I've also tried with the original pkgname variable and that gave me a correct package but it overwrote the kernel from core, which I don't want. So I want to have in /boot the files vmlinuz26-iwl_debug and kernel26-iwl_debug and such like e.g. the -ck kernels.
Could anyone help me out here? Thanks a lot!

Yeah I followed that but it doesn't work out. Normally I would troubleshoot this myself, the only reason I am asking here is that I am in the middle of my exams and I don't have the time to do this now. But on the other hand a nasty bug is making my wireless nic unusable so I'd like to be able to get a kernel with debug enabled for the iwlwifi module so that I can give some useful info to the intel guys.
funny, i just ran into the same problem, trying to compile the same config option, to probably debug the same wireless nic bug... /

  • Having to much trouble with arch. What other distros do you recomend?

I've been trying to geet arch running flawlessly on my thinkpad x61 for the last month.
But I've run in to some problems that I can't solve.
The iwlwifi-4965-ucode drivers unstable and gives me kernelpanics. Tried to roll them back but nothing happend.
I'm having problems with my xorg. It worked flawlessly under kubuntu but in arch I get some strange lines when things moving horizontaly on my screen. Like the image is splitting into 2 pieces instead of one. Have been configuring my xorg for weeks without any result.
Feels like I need some other distro.
I like the whole from scratch idea.

I think you misunderstand what a linux distro is. There is no secret sauce that makes one distro better than the other. They all have the same ingredients. What make distros different is how they put the same ingredients together.
I am assuming you went here http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/lenovo.html and looked at this http://pi-ist-genau-3.de/?page_id=344
And I am assuming you looked at this too (regarding your wireless) http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10984
tried the xorg.conf from "debian on lenovo x61" and its a dualscreen configuration. And I actually had a 1680x1050 samsung syncmaster standing in a closet so I plugged it in and tried to play movies @ both screens and I get the same result on both screens no matter what mediaplayer I run. So something must be wrong with my intel driver?
My xorg.conf before I tested the dualscreen xorg, witch gives me the same problem.
    Using xf86-video-intel driver.
And about the wifidrivers. A bug is allways a bug no matter if it's known or not. Still a problem.

  • Zd1211 based USB wireless problems

I'm having trouble using a wireless USB device based on the zd1211 chipset.
Drivers load correctly when the device is plugged in but dhcp won't connect,
    at lest not consistently.
That's the maddening part.  I've gotten a connection a few times but often
enough to figure out a pattern.
Anyone else have experience with USB devices of this chipset?
    -A

You probably want to use the zd1211rw driver which is part of the newest kernels. So don't install the zd1211 package, but you will also need the firmware. I'm working on a package for that, as you can see at:
    http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6438?histring=zd1211
    Hopefully this is somewhat helpful.

  • Wireless Intermittent Super Slow DNS lookup bug in 10.6.4

I don't normally post things on forums these days, as usually I can find just about any solution by searching long enough, but this issue has perplexed me to the point I actually had to come on here.
Believe me, that's a big deal, I don't give up easily.
I have spent -countless- hours searching, on here, on google, on any "solutions" or "technical" sites I could find, and the closest I can find to a solution are countless people complaining about the EXACT SAME PROBLEM that I have observed and, repeatedly, reproduced again and again, which in every single case boil down to this:
You had 10.6.x (x being 3 or less) with a wireless connection on your home network and all is well.
You upgraded to 10.6.4 and all seemed fine for maybe 24 hours or so... then it happens. You go to load a website, and it's "looking for site" or "waiting for site" in your status bar... hmm, maybe it's just this site you say, so you try another, or a few others in other tabs, but they all have the same problem.
You try to ping the sites, but the network utility can't resolve the domain to even ping them.
Your roommate, all the while, is surfing and gaming just fine on the exact same router you are on, so no, it's not the network hardware, it's not your ISP, hmm, what could it be?
All of a sudden, ALL of the sites you had in like 20 tabs load up at screaming speeds, "WOW" you say, "guess there must have just been some gunk in the wires or something" (notice the irony of the situation: no wires)... anyway, all seems fine again suddenly, surfing is fine for a few minutes, you're back to normal... and it happens again, suddenly NO site will resolve, NO dns will resolve, you can't check email or ping any domain... and so the cycle begins. Of course, you can just plug an ethernet cable straight into the router, but doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having wireless networking in the first place?
It continues like this, indefinitely, and it all starts roughly 24 hours after 10.6.4 has been installed.
I have read reports of people on macbooks, people on imacs, people on all sorts of different wireless hardware, but the symptoms are the same.
I know the problem is with the OS update, it's purely software. I know that it has nothing to do with hardware because simply reverting to 10.6.3 solves the problem -every single time- and then "upgrading" to 10.6.4 causes the problem to come back within 24 hours -every single time- (have been reverting using Time Machine to simplify this testing process), so no, where the problem is isn't what perplexes me; what perplexes me is that there are posts that started almost a few days after 10.6.4 came out, and so far there's STILL no fix? Are you freaking serious? Does the Apple programming team not have access to anything other than Apple-Branded Airport Extreme Base Stations to perform wireless network QA testing on?
Get a Linksys guys, grab a D-Link, go get some of the hardware people actually USE and test it on that and see what happens, it doesn't take long to see what's happening.
I blame the programmers because I am one myself and know how easy it is to screw up a rock-solid system with one little typo. Heck, which patch was it, 10.5.7 or 10.5.8 I think? Can't remember exactly, but it was supposed to be such a great "bug fix" patch... and it came with the config file for Apache set to DENY ALL INCOMING EXTERNAL CONNECTIONS by default (in a hidden file that can only be modified by the root user mind you... so much for the average user running a personal web server on THAT version), so yeah, one tiny mistake and it has huge consequences, my question is: what's taking so long to track down what's going on in 10.6.4 and fix it? Can we at least get a patch or something?
I find it really lame and really such a cop-out to see so many irrelevant "solutions" offered, "try specifying different DNS servers" (doesn't matter, whatever causes this bug doesn't care which servers you have specified, it simply sits there and does NOTHING for 2-3 minutes, and THEN when it actually DOES do a dns lookup, it gets the results in the time expected: instantly), to more extreme matters, like resetting hardware, which again has absolutely nothing to do with this bug.
Here is why anyone can see this is an obvious bug that the programming team needs to admit, investigate and correct:
    A. happens immediately after the software update
    B. happens to EVERYONE who uses traditional wireless routers for internet use
    C. is 100% repeatedly reproducible
    D. occurs on all different models of computers and all different ISP's and with all different DNS servers specified.
    E. has the same symptoms on every system (lightning fast internet for 2-3 minutes, then "waiting for site" for 1-3 minutes)
    F. affects EVERY network-using program on the computer (email, network utility, firefox, safari) SIMULTANEOUSLY
    G. does not affect surfing to or interacting with IP addresses directly, only with trying to perform DNS lookups from ANY program with ANY dns server (or no dns server) set in network preferences.
Come on guys, just read it through, think about it for a few minutes, for anyone that has worked with and knows the underlying source code, and what changes went in between 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 specifically to networking, should have a light bulb pop up over their head and say "oh YEAH, we never uncommented that one line..." or something to that effect.

I see a very similar issue, but it's been occurring on my laptop for 4 or 5 months, which must be way before 10.6.4. My roommate and friend's laptops all work fine on my network. And my laptop works fine on anyone else's network. But MY laptop on MY network always gives the abysmal DNS performance as described in the original post: 40% of requests time out. Wireless or wired, it doesn't matter. Exact same behavior.
It also doesn't matter whether I use my Netgear router as DNS server, or my ISP, or OpenDNS, or Google. Exact same behavior.
When I do a network trace, it looks like most DNS requests my computer sends out simply never get responded to. (Could they be malformed when they hit the wire? I don't even see an error reply) A few make it through. And when there's a IPv6 (AAAA) record sent, my computer returns a "port unreachable" ICMP message. A screenshot of all of this dialogue is here:
    http://img545.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20100913at114.png/
I recently had opportunity to cancel my cable service, and reinstate it for a lower price. They came out, tested the line (strong signal), gave me a new cable box. Yet the issue persists. Exact same behavior.
Firewall is disabled. I've deleted the network interfaces and added them back. Nothing helps.
(As I recall, this issue may even have been present before I reinstalled 10.6 over 10.5, so I'm not too confident a total reinstall would help.)
Any help? I'm about ready to buy a new laptop to fix this damned problem. Web browsing is nearly impossible, as is.

  • IOS 5.0.1 wireless Bug - DHCP

We discovered an interesting issue yesterday on our network, and upon much searching, I didn't see anyone else with the same conclusion.
Allow me to start by describing the issue.  It's happened on a few occassions in our network over the past several months (we recently started allowing Apple iOS devices on our network as Exchange Activesync clients), but I was finally able to narrow it down today.
Issue: Certain iOS devices when connected to the wireless network retain their DHCP Lease from their home network in the background, while connecting to the business network with a like subnet.  The IP Address that the iOS device is retaining from home is NOT in the DHCP scope of the business network, but conflicts with a static assigned IP Address on one of the corporate network services (i.e. Print Server, Email Server, File Server, Database Server) in the like subnet.  For example "User A" running an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.1 has an Airport Extreme at home that assigns DHCP Addresses in the 10.0.0.x scope.  The Corporate DHCP Scope is 10.0.4.x-10.0.5.x with similar subnet.  "User A" connects to corporate network via wi-fi and is assigned an IP address of 10.0.4.x (but in the background the device is reserving 10.0.0.x from home Airport Extreme.)  Address 10.0.0.x belongs to back-end email server, and whenever "User A" turns their device on, it disrupts the network connectivity for the rest of the corporate network to the email server.  "User A" turns off wi-fi on iPhone, and normal corporate network operations resume.  In the past, the issue has conflicted with a less major server, or another windows client, and so a resolution was able to be acquired by renewing the IP Address on the Windows client computer.
The issue presents it self as one of our Windows Server machines complaining about an IP Address Conflict on the network.  Upon examining the Windows Event Viewer in the System Log, we discover an error message from the "Tcpip" service "The system detected an address conflict for IP address 10.0.0.X with the system having network hardware address 60:C5:47:XX:XX:XX. Network operations on this system may be disrupted as a result." Upon examining the mac address beginning with 60:C5:47 we discover this particular MAC Address range belongs to Apple Inc. (LINK)  This led us to search the building for the offending iOS device on which we were able to verify the Wireless MAC address.
In a similar forum post by a user in 2009, the suggestion was that the issue lay with the Windows computer.  Well, in that particular case, it was a Home PC, and the user was able to 'work-around' the bug by renewing their DHCP lease on their other client that was reporting the issue.  In our case, since the conflict occurs with a Network Server with a staticly assigned IP and services / certificates assigned to that interface, it's not as easy as renewing the IP address to allow the Windows computer to 'fix' the issue.  I believe the issue lies in the iOS wireless driver, and needs to be addressed by Apple Development team.  I'm not sure the best way to accomplish this, so I figured I'd start in the support forum. Since there wasn't a forum for iOS, I placed the issue under iPhone for Enterprise, though this issue is reproducable with iPad and iPod Touch also.
Here's a detailed post by Princeton University where they describe the issue in great detail. http://www.net.princeton.edu/apple-ios/ios41-allows-lease-to-expire-keeps-using- IP-address.html#chronology How can we get greater urgency to get this bug fixed?
    I'd appreciate response / suggestions / input / feedback.
    Thanks!

This is nothing a feature like DHCP Snooping, IP Source Guard and Dynamic ARP Inspection couldn't resolve.  Why on earth would this be affecting the rest of your network?  If everything is properly segmented, it shouldnt matter if that thing boots up with your e-mail servers IP address.  If it is, you are using a big *** network like a /16 and simply dishing out certain ranges to certain functions rather than using proper subnetting.  I really hope this is not the case as thats a big mistake.
If you have everything setup properly, I cannot see that device as affecting anything at all;  if it came up with that IP on your wireless subnet, no devices in other subnets should ever be trying to talk to that thing since that IP range is supposed to be reachable elsewhere, like your server subnet, not the wireless subnet.  Your other networks will always be forwarding traffic for your server to your server subnet, never to the wireless subnet.
If you are at all confused about what I am saying, let me ask you this.  What is the default gateway for your Wireless devices and what is the default gateway for your Servers?  If that answer is the same, there lies your problem.  Hire a network engineer to clean up that mess.  If it is not the same, then something like proxy ARP must be turned on since that incorrect IP should not affect anything other than itself with proper layer 3 boundaries.
If that is not an option, you should be able to use a combination of DHCP Snooping,IP Source Guard and Dynamic ARP Inspection to nip this problem in the butt if your running Cisco gear (if other gear, cross reference, I'm sure the feature exists with another name).  The only way for it to cause havok is if the offending device is producing an ARP reply for your servers IP.  If running Dynamic ARP Inspection, it should see the offender responding with an ARP for your servers IP which doesnt match what the DHCP snooping database has in it, and it will drop that ARP reply.  If by chance that offending device did try to transmit as your servers IP, IP Source Guard's dynamic PACL should have dropped that traffic since its source IP does not match what is in the DHCP Snooping database.
I am not doubting that a bug exists here, however a robust network infrastructure would not be affected by what you describe.  Those switch features were designed to halt malicious actions, whether performed intentionally or accidentally via a bug.  A network engineer worth his/her salt would have implemented that in their design.

  • Bug fix for Mac book wireless - problem solved!

Aparantly there is a rather large number of folks out there who've discovered this dillema with wireless not working very well at this point on the Macbook.
Well, I can attest there is one very good solution out there for this issue. This application called Sonar Theater from www.sunray.tv includes a bug fix for the wireless connection issues with Macbook in their latest 1.5 release of Sonar Theater.
I downloaded it, put it into my start up folder and waalaa! problem solved. I've haven't any more issues with dropped wireless since - it's been running constantly for over 2 weeks now.
I haven't even attempted to touch my router configuration - don't need to.

Welcome to the better life of Macs. I am using Sonar Theater too and it's been working very well for me. In fact, I'm getting hooked on just texting a message to my Mac book to fire up user sessions now. I think if you give the Mac Book some time however, you'll find that there really is no comparison to PC's. Your life overall is going to just keep getting better as you dig in to the resources available to new Mac users.
I'm sure it seems confusing to PC users at first, but here's how to set up any application as part of your startup sequence. It really is extremely easy and simple compared to the PC world. Oh and by the way, in reality, Mac users refer to this as your login sequence. So, at login time, you can do a multitude of different things for each user account you might want to set up. Naturally, you can choose to share or not share applications and data between these user accounts on your Mac too....
Mac OS X 10.3 or later
    1. Log in as the user who wishes to have a login item or as an admin user.
    2. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    3. Choose Accounts from the View menu.
    4. Click the name of the user.
    5. Click the Startup Items button
    6. Click the "Add {+}" button.
The item you selected will automatically open the next time you log in.
there are several ways to get good info from the apple community on tips and tricks as well. you should just try the apple os x web site...here,

    happy mac-ing!
