Zd1211 based USB wireless problems

I'm having trouble using a wireless USB device based on the zd1211 chipset.
Drivers load correctly when the device is plugged in but dhcp won't connect,
at lest not consistently.
That's the maddening part.  I've gotten a connection a few times but often
enough to figure out a pattern.
Anyone else have experience with USB devices of this chipset?
-A

You probably want to use the zd1211rw driver which is part of the newest kernels. So don't install the zd1211 package, but you will also need the firmware. I'm working on a package for that, as you can see at:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6438?histring=zd1211
Hopefully this is somewhat helpful.

  • HP Pavilion G6-2244NR network, usb, wireless problems after downgrade to Windows 7

HP Pavilion G6-2244NR with networking issues.  Okay, so I have a G6-2244NR that I had to downgrade to Windows 7 Pro 64 (SP1), due to problems with software compatibility.  Install was originally done on UEFI GPT, wiped 8 and started from scratch with Legacy support MBR.  Install went perfectly fine.  However, I boot into 7 and I get the Network icon showing a red X.  I then go into  manager and note that there are no networking devices listed.  Instead I have 8 devices listed under "Other Devices" with yellow exclamations by each of them.  This includes the Bluetooth Controller, the Ethernet Controller, the Network Controller, a PCI device, the SM Bus Controller, two USB controllers, and an "Unknown Device".  Bluetooth ID is ven_1814&dev 3298, Ethernet ID PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136, and so on.  I have downloaded drivers out the wazoo.  I think I updated the chipset but not sure if right chipset updates (Catalyst 12.6).  Still no luck.  Every time I try and install what I think are correct drivers I get a "Device not working" error on the LAN card.  Can anyone help??

This is more a kernel issue rather than Archlinux as, just coming from Debian Sid, I had problems with this stick since kernel 2.6.24

under ubuntu, the rt73usb kernel driver was unsuable for me, it froze every 5 minutes, requiering either a network restart, or a complete system reboot. rt73 worked ok, but quite gruesome to automate.
under arch, the rt73usb works much better, but still i get the ocassional network lockup, which gets fixed by restarting the network (/etc/rc.d/net-auto restart).
i built rt73 legacy but no matter what i did, the firmware was claimed missing, even if it actually was there (/lib/firmware/rt73.bin exists)
i wonder, why the need to blacklist rt2500usb? does the module conflict with rt73usb?

From what I understood you need ndiswrapper to run the wireless card. Is it posible to do it natively. Its been a while since I've used ndiswrapper but it seems the kernel is already recognising the wireless card. Uninstall ndiswrapper and see if the system does load it manually. Otherwise I would recomend you post this on the ndiswrapper forums.

  • Time Capsule and USB Wireless adaptor for PC

I can't seem to find a USB wireless adapter that I can use to connect my Windows XP desktop PC with my Time Capsule/Airport. I have a Notebook PC that I was able to connect with no problem using my existing wireless PC card. I have tried several USB adapters for my desktop, but nothing sees my network. I've also tried to update to the latest drivers for my adapters. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, any answers?

There is no difference between the TC and other routers as far as networking is concerned. It is fully compliant to the usual standards.
Your wireless USB network adapters should work just fine. A lot will depend on how you have your TC configured. If it is setup for 802.11n only, then if your USB adapters are 802.11b or g, they won't be able to see it. If you have the TC's SSID disabled, they won't be able to see it. If you are using WPA2 and the USB adapters only support WEP or WPA security, they won't work either.
You typically have to find the lowest common denominator and configure everything based on that.

Just tested something and it worked.
If I put the headphones all the way in, the mac recognizes it as a digital output.
But if i don't put it all the way in, it recognizes it as headphones and works perfectly.
    It's probably this crappy headphones.

Hi, Jake. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It's possible that your AirPort card has fizzled out on you. AirPort card failure doesn't happen very often, but it happened to me once, and it was very frustrating.
We diagnosed what was wrong with mine by my husband swapping his AirPort card with mine. Then my iBook would connect, but his wouldn't, so we knew it was the card.
Will the iBook work on any wireless network? Do you have someone with whom you could swap cards to see if that's the problem?

Have you tried using the other USB port? If neither port works, try plugging in a USB mouse to see if it works to confirm that your USB ports aren't damaged.
Have you installed any new software? Maybe a Security Update or something similar? Sometimes that will break functionality of third-party drivers.
You may need to go to the website of the manufacturer of the USB wireless device to see if an updated driver is available.

When did you buy it, Jake?
There is a driver that was released on June 19, 2007.
    http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D9050&aid=5925&scid=0
Even if this is the one you have installed, you may want to reinstall it.

Since Jake hasn't posted in over two months, either that driver worked for him, he found the answer elsewhere, or he gave up. Since he hasn't posted back, we have no way of knowing.

I am not running Leopard... using 10.4 and I already own the product. It is suppose to work and there is no reason to purchase another unit. All I need to understand is how to make the IMac recognize the USB device or how to configure the unit. Others have stated in this and other forums that they have used this unit with success.
Thanks for address this specific issue.

You may want to post in the Internet and Networking your iMac (Flat Panel) Forum. Maybe someone there can help you out. (You've posted in the iBook G3 Forum.)

I am using a laptop to connect to the internet not the machine that I am writing about. If I could do that I would not need any help. I will check out the other forum but this thread is on topic.
    Mac OS X (10.5.1)

The information in your thread references an iBook quite a lot but the title of this post says iMac so I going to assume that you are trying to use this device with an iMac.
It is also unclear what version of the Mac OS you are using.
Let's start by stating the fact that these USB networking networking devices are not inherently supported by the Mac OS. Therefore they need drivers. These drivers are usually fragile and only work with a well defined version (or versions) of the Mac OS. Anytime that you make any upgrade to the Mac you are able to create an incompatibility with the driver and the device.
The Belkin F5D9050 does have some Mac OS drivers available at this link.
You should uninstall/remove the current driver for this device.
    Restart your iMac.
Download and install the appropriate driver for the version of Mac OS on your iMac.
    Restart your iMac.
If that doesn't work, either get the original AirPort card for the internal wireless slot in the iMac or get an Ethernet wireless adapter. An Ethernet wireless adapter requires no drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet device.

  • Windows 8.1 freeze on any hardware scan or changes. USB wireless keyboard mouse not working

Problem : System Freezes frequently on any hardware scan or changes.
Symptom : Wireless Keyboard Mouse not working.
    Caused by : VMkbd.sys located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers.
Issue : VMware player or VMware Workstation installed on Windows 8.1 causes compatibility issue leading to system freeze
Soultion : Please follow steps below
    Step 1: Start > run > regedit
    Step 2: Locate to this registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e96b-e325-11ce-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Step 3: On the left side plane, Right click on the registry {4d36e96b-e325-11ce-BFC1-08002BE10318} and then export it as backup. Just to be safe.
Step 4: Edit the UpperFilters, The value current would be kdbclass vmkbd. Remove the vmkbd. So only value left would be kbdclass.
Step 5: Restart your system and connect your USB wireless reciever. If all is well it will not freeze your windows now.
This worked for me. Hope this works for you. Enjoy..!!

  • USB wireless adapter - interface name keeps changing

I have used different usb wireless (G) adapters with my 12" Powerbook G4.
Each was automatically assigned an interface name (BSD) such as en2, en4.
I recently updated to a Wireless N dongle (D-Link DWA140) which works great with my new Belkin Wireless N router.
I have had a few connection problems where the dongle was named as enNull.
After rebooting and re-entering the ip address via DHCP, I noticed that the same dongle has been renamed each time e.g First as en5 then en6, 7 and 8. It's now called en10
It works fine but is it possible to reset the name/number of this wireless adaptor using something like ifconfig in the shell Or some other way. I understand that en0 is built-in ethernet and en1 is Airport. I have 2 other dongles which are still identified as en 2 and en4. But my current dongle has an inflation problem and I would like to reset it if possible to a lower number.
Is this possible or am I mad to even consider it?
    any help welcome.

That is very strange that PCI cards would keep changing names between reboots. Maybe you should investigate that to figure out what's going on. Check the dmesg and journalctl after each reboot and see what the interface is named as. Maybe that will give you some clues as to what "external" program is responsible in naming the interfaces.

  • Issues with usb wireless adapter

    Hi
    Please excuse my ignorance.
I have an imac (about 2 years old) with a built in airport card. I am trying to use a usb wireless adapter. It has a realtek rtl8187. we have a wifi network here that works with my pc using this adapter but i cant get it to work on the mac. You have to sling the adapter on the window sill but it picks it up fine.
I have installed the supplied software (obviously the mac one!) and it installs the software and driver. After i have restarted, and plug the thing in, it tells me to turn on my wlan card on the supplied software?? It shows up in the listing on network settings as ethernet adapter ((null)). I cannot find any setting to turn on my wireless card, i thought that was airport?
The airport picks up the network but the signal is too weak to connect, hence the adapter with a bit more guts....
I have this beautiful mac, colecting dust and am having to use a pc!
If i connect the usb adapter without installing the software, it constantly has a box popping up in network settings saying that an external device has changed settings! it doesnt stop doing it, until you delete the location...
Can anyone help? I may be being thick and dont have a wlan card or something or airport will not allow me to use this thing. I only just started getting into macs when i moved to spain, where it has sat colecting dust for 3 months.
    I would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks
    Richard

    TNHusker, welcome to the forum.
Cisco makes a router that is good for two-story homes.  I have used it for several years.  My router / hotspot is on the second floor and my Blu-ray player and laptop are on the first floor.  Both work extremely well with the router.  They also make a USB, AM10, that works very nicely with a desktop without a wireless card.
I have had a few problems with both, but have always been helped successfully by Cisco Customer Service.  They are very good.

  • Flaky USB Wireless Connection on Mini

I've recently installed a Hawking USB Wireless adapter 802.1 B/G to connect to the internet via a 3-Com router located in house with a strong signal. My hubby has been using the same router on a Windows machine with no problems for quite some time. The adapter is connected through a 4-port USB hub and has been working ..... most of the time.
If I have to restart my computer, it has trouble reconnecting. When this happens, the Hawking utility shows that it's connected with strong signal, but my safari displays a not connected to the net message. I'll remove it, double check the utility which will update to show no device, replace it and it will locate the adapater again and again with strong signal, but safari is no dice.
I've gone into the Settings and it will inevitable have defaulted back to the internal modem which is not set up. I'll change it to ethernet, renew the DHCP lease and still no dice. What's worked, so far, is to simply go to bed and hope in the morning it's back on.
    Thoughts?

From the description of your problem, you apparently have an early G4 PPC Mini with just 2 USB ports, an internal modem, but no airport.
The kind of problems you are encountering is one reason why I (and others) consider USB to be the least satisfactory way to connect a Mini wirelessly to the ethernet.
And USB wireless via a hub adds another layer of complexity.
A preferable method for a Mini with just 2 usb ports would be to use a wireless ethernet bridge, which plugs into the ethernet port of the Mini.
I question whether anyone here will have a solution for your Hawking problem. And if not, I'd recommend going the wireless ethernet bridge route.
Alternatively, the most reliable solution is always to run real ethernet cable between the computer and the router. Since you have such a strong signal, perhaps they are not so far apart as to make this impractical.

  • IPOD and USB Wireless Adapter Fighting!

I've got a Motorola USB Wireless Ethernet Adapter hooked up to my Dell desktop running XP. When I put my iPod in it's cradle, it disconnects the wireless. I've tried moving the iPod onto the other USB bus, but I keep getting the same problem.
    Any suggestions?

Hi Emily & welcome to the discussions:
My first move would be to switch from usb to firewire connection. Much more stable. If your Dell does not have firewire, I would opt for the Adaptec Firewire 4300 card that is so highly recommended in various threads here.
I have wireless usb devices working along side my firewire connection for the pod and have no problems.
    Good luck,

  • OS X Lion Compatible USB Wireless Adapters

I, like many others (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18383471?tstart=0), have been having a very hard time staying connected to my wireless network in Lion.
This only happens on my iMac, my MBP is fine.
Sometimes it's not too bad, sometimes my iMac is just unuseable because it cant stay connected for more than a second.
I can sometimes get around it by:
    - disabling / enabling Wifi
    - restarting my router
    - restarting my Mac
Obviously all of this is a massive hindrance on my productivity as a web designer and is very frustrating, especially when none of these methods even solve my problem.
Anyway, rant over. Does anyone know of any USB wireless adapters that work on OS X? As I'm having trouble finding a straight answer online.
Also please note, I posted a message similar to this several months ago and people started trying to fix my Wifi problem instead of recommending USB adapters. I am through with trying to resolve this issue manually, it has resulted in far too much wasted time and I've completely lost patience with it. Also it seems impossible to fix, seeing as there are over 120 pages of problems in the thread I posted above
If anyone could advise me on the best USB solution that would be great.

I’m interested in some feedback as well. I have an iMac and want to install Lion but I don’t want to have to deal with a bunch of issues other than what has been posted on the Adobe web site under “Known Issues Adobe products on Mac OS 10.7 Lion”. I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro this week, it has Lion preinstalled and want to install CS5 so some feedback would be awesome. Thanks
