WLAN 4400 Controller - Distributing AP's across controllers

We have 10 4400-100 controllers located at a central location, which manage approximately 750 APs across 20 remote locations. Is there a best practice concerning the distribution of those APs across the controllers.  We currently distribute the APs from a single remote site across 2 or more controllers for the purposes of fault tolerance.  My concern is channel/power selection when APs are located on different controllers.  Is there a downside to distributing the APs across the controllers?

The best way to handle this is to put all the AP's for a site onto the same controller.  This would reduce the number of mobility handoffs when a client roams between controllers.  When mobility events have to occur for roaming it just adds a little latency.
As far as the RRM concerns, just make sure you have all the controllers in the same mobility and RF groups.  The controllers will communicate between eachother and sub-RF groups will be created for the controllers that have AP's that can hear eachother.

    there is no specific limitation to 1131/1252 AP model as such, everything is WLC software dependent.
    From later software 7.4.x,7.6.x,8.x, lots of improvement for QoS configuration & bandwidth control, but since your controller is old hardware, you cannot have those latest features.

  • Prime Infrastructure and WLAN Configuration Controller Templates

    Hello,
    I work with PI v1.2 in customer environment. This app has SNMP relation with 7 controllers (4 controllers in 2 WiSM modules, 3 controllers are standalone). All controllers uses WLANs which I sometimes need to update. I would like to use the PI so that update all of them in one step. But when I use WLAN Configuration Controller Templates and choose given WLAN Template then the PI answer me with error message: "Unknown Exception Occured. If the problem persists send logs to the Tech Support."
    Have you anyone had such a problem? Is it any bug of the application?

  • What VLAN should the management interface be in on a 4400 controller?

    Hi,
    Some documentations put the management interface on a 4400 controller into a regular tagged VLAN. But some documentations put it in an untagged Native VLAN, the tag=0. What is the difference? Which configuration is optimal?

    The answer is "it depends" :-)
    I would not say any particular config is optimal though. If you have an established VLAN for management interfaces, I would use that. However if you put the management interface in the same VLAN as your AP's, AP's find your controllers easier. Otherwise you can use DHCP to point AP's to controllers.
    I prefer to tag the frame as to which VLAN it belongs to, even if that is the same as the native VLAN.

    When APs join controller you can define primary controller and secondary controller for each specific APs so that if by any chance any controller is unreachable APs can join second controller with minimal downtime.
    Also you can configure mobility group between 2 controllers so that when client roams to different APs on different controller they can retain thir ip address.

  • WLAN 4400 - Trunking issue

    Hi all,
    We are having an issue setting up a truck port for the 4400 to our 2950 swithes.
    The setup will work fine without vlan tagging. The WLAN controller can ping the switch and our network.
    When I configure trunking on the switch, the connection drops.
    I have configured the Gi 0/2 port with the below commands
    interface gi 0/2
    Switchport trunk allowed vlan 1-10
    switchport mode trunk
    No shut
    Modifying the WLAN 4400 I set the management interface tagged for vlan 2.
    This breaks the connections between the WLAN controller and the switch.
    Can you advise where I may be going wrong and how to rectify.

    All vlans configured to the switch and all the Layer3 interface configured for each one .
    DHCP scope work fine .
    The PC client can associate to the AP successfully when i change the interface to other vlan at WLAN interface.But the AP group just not work.
    by the way , would you mind tell me how i can assign the ap group to each radio ?

  • 4400 Controller Dropping DHCP Packets

    We have a working wireless set up with an external DHCP server. We just tried to set up a new one but we are faced with this issue:
    Client DHCP requests are forwarded from the controller to the serve. The server sees the requests and assigns addresses but for some reason the clients aren't able to get them. From what I'm reading around the 'net it looks like it could be an Option 43 setting or that th controlles is dropping the request. If anyone has ideas it would be much appreciated.

    Do you have an Option 43 setup for the clients, or for the AP's to connect to the controller over a L3 link? In the Interface setup that the WLAN is linked to, did you add or change the IP address to the list of DHCP servers for that link. The controller pretty much forwards everything on to the LAN, but then restricts the packets from the LAN to the WLAN. I hope this helps.

    Hi Wireless Lan controller 4400 the documnetation on this product is awfull . I am trying to configure wpa-2 using 802.1x authentication or leap is this possable as for web interface cannot find were you set authentication type. if wpa-2 uses a particular type what is it.   • Does hash partition distribute data evenly across partitions?

    As per Oracle documentation, it is mentioned that hash partitioning uses oracle hashing algorithms to assign a hash value to each rows partitioning key and place it in the appropriate partition. And the data will be evenly distributed across the partitions. Ofcourse following following conditions :
    1. Partition count should follow 2^n logic
    2. Data in partition key column should have high cardinality.
    I have used hash partitioning in some of our application tables, but data isn't distributed evenly across partitions. To verify it, i performed a small test :
    Table script :

    As per the result, it seems there is lot of skewness in data distribution across partitions. Maybe I am missing something, or something is not right.

    So the actual hash distribution in any particular case will depend on the actual data distribution. And, as Iordan showed, the data distribution depends not only on cardinality but on the standard deviation of the key values.
    To use a shorter version of that examle consider these data samples which each have 10 values. There is a calculator here

    The first and last examples have the highest cardinality but only the last has unique values (i.e. 100% distinct).
    Note that the first example is lower for all other attributes but that doesn't mean it would hash more evenly.
    Also note that the last example, the unique values, has the highest variance.
    So this is no single attribute that is controlling. As Iordan showed the first example has a high %distinct but all of those '0' values will hash to the same partition so even using a perfect hash the data would use 6 partitions.

  • Restoring the Configuration backup in 4400 Controller

    I had a strange issue. I am having a controller 4400 with 7.0.250.0. It  went  faulty and i got the replacement. For the new box i upgraded to 7.0.250.0 and when i am restoring the backup i am getting the following error

                           It was a hardware issue. Replaced the hardware and its fine.

  • APs disconnect from 4400 controller

    I have 2 4402 controllers with ~20 APs on each. For some reason, all the APs will go down on one controller and migrate to the other, like the controller has gone offline. This only happens to one controller. I've checked the network switches and no errors. This happens every 6 hours or sometimes completely random. I have the latest version on the controllers. Any ideas on where to start to look?

    What version of WLC firmware are you running?
    Even with 4.0.206.0 (the most current) as well as some other earlier versions from fall 2006, there are some known issues with APs rebooting.

  • 4400 Controller added radius now.......

    you can only reach it if your on the same vlan as the management interface. The vlan is routing fine I can get to any other device on this vlan from otheres just not the controllers the only change was adding a radius server. I have 2 controllers same thing with both. I get an error trying to delete the radius entry as well. Any ideas?
