WLAN & Password Protected Proxy Servers

Hi,
I think below is a generic S60 series problem which has no solution provided by Nokia.
Problem occurs when we have a wireless connection with a password protected proxy server.
On the phone, which is E51 in this case, in the advanced settings form of selected wireless connection has no field to enter a username and password for the proxy server. A solution to this could be like that: Enter the expression below to "Proxy Server Address" field:
"login name":"password"@"proxyserver IP" or
http://"login name":"password"@"proxyserver IP" or
http://"domain name"\"login name":"password"@"proxyserver IP"
This way it appears like I'm connected to the proxy, but if I try to surf the net with a browser, again it asks for the username and password. If I start any other application requiring connection to internet it shortly fails.
Mail for Exchange also has no use if you have a proxy server which neeeds authentication.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I had such problem with Nseries (N82) it could access internet by using Nokia web browser but other applications access were unsucessful through WLAN which had a proxy server with username and pass.
In Nseries, when you defined access points in tools/settings/connection/access points/"your access point"/edit
by pressing options and select advanced settings you can set the proxy, but the problem persists as application other than nokia web browser and nokia maps, couldn't access the internet.

  • Firefox Sync not working with weave server behind password protected proxy

Since the sync is moved from firefox to Android, I'm completely unable to sync my bookmarks with my personal weave server. The server is internal, but accessible via a proxy with a username/password for all internal sites. Last working version was 10.0.5, all newer versions have this problem. I've just reinstalled the ancient version, as I now need the bookmarks. First syncing in 10.0.5 and then upgrading to anything newer makes all previous synced data unavailable. BTW the newef versions will let you add other devices to the same sync account (on the internal server), but it just complete refuses to collect any data at all from the server. (I don't even see any attempts in the logging of the proxy server)
I'm unable to get debug info, as I don't have a google account (don't trust them) and can't run SDK or other non-standard tools on my company phone.
The phone in question is a Samsung Galaxy S2, latest software version (Android 4.04) Is there a way to get firefox doing the sync? (As Android just can't handle this)

Why in the pastebin in the debugging line is the version of sync the older one:
    1407393996002 Sync.Service DEBUG User-Agent: Firefox/33.0a2 FxSync/1.35.0.20140806004002.
More info on self hosting can be found here: [https://blog.mozilla.org/services/2014/05/08/firefox-accounts-sync-1-5-and-self-hosting/] where you can also ask this in the #sync IRC channel or [https://mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/sync-dev] join the dev mailing list to get a more technical answer.
Are you using the first method? Where the Firefox server is the authenticating server and the hosted server is your own?
It fails to login because it flags it already has a token, but 401 failed to Get the collections at your server, these are strange errors and I am not an expert, please do ask your question in the mailing list, the technical eye will be able to catch the issue much quicker.

  • Proxy Servers, Password Resets/Expirations and Password Policies

Our current configuration has two directory proxy servers and two directory servers, all running DSEE 6.3.1. The LDAP clients point to the proxy servers and the proxy servers point to the directory servers.
When the LDAP clients user the proxy servers, users aren't notified on password resets or expirations. When I point one of the LDAP clients directly at on the directory servers, bypassing the proxy servers, the expected behavior of being required to change a password on reset or notification of password expiration works fine.
We would like this to work via the proxy servers as well. Can anyone point me in a direction or two to determine why this isn't working as expected ?
    TIA!

I opened a service call on this and in speaking with the rep, who was reading the CR mentioned in the first reply, he said it contained a note about the fix being scheduled for release in DSEE 7.x. I'm not sure if it made it into the recently released 7.0 or not.
A patch released for the 6.3.1 proxy servers on the 21st of December didn't include mention of the CR in the notes, although there was mention of another CR that sounded like it might be related.
Since it appears the CR was created in late November, I'd be surprised if either the DPS 6.3.1 patch or the 7.0 full release address the CR. In either case, I'm assuming you'll have to wait if you don't have a support contract with Sun that covers DSEE.

  • Disabling anonymous proxy servers

Can I find out if another user on my computer (my kid) has been using proxy servers to surf sites without my knowledge? Will Safari History indicate access to that server?
If this is occurring, can I disable the ability to do so. I don't want any anonymous surfing.

Can I find out if another user on my computer (my kid) has been using proxy servers to surf sites without my knowledge?
No. Safari doesn't keep that kind of information. If you really have some reason to believe this is being done, the best solution is to password protect your Mac so your children or anyone else cannot access it without you logging in for them.
There's nothing wrong with using anonymous proxies to surf the web; it's the content of what you think your child ma be accessing that is the problem. You cannot disable that ability. If you have no evidence to support your suspicion, then you're overreacting.

    Hi,
I am using iweb 08, and i host with godaddy.
Is there any way of making the password function from iweb work with godaddy?
so far i can't get it to work.
    Thanks

    Dave:
That's one of the features of iWeb that are not supported by non Mac servers:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a Non-Mac Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Blog RSS Subscription
    ◼ Hit counter

There are methods using php I believe but, again, have no experience with them. One of these sites may be what you're looking for.

  • Password protecting a networked printer

Hello, here's the situation. My family has a networked printer (Brother 402cn) that's shared via a linksys 802.11g router with three computers (iMac G5, PB and Toshiba). The iMac is the main computer and I would like to password protect the printer so that one needs to input a password to be able to print from the iMac. How would I go about doing this?
    Thanks for your time,
    Eric
    PowerBook 12-inch 867   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Unless password protection is a feature built into the printer driver, which I assume is not the case and for which you should be talking to Brother anyway, the only reliable way to do this is to:
1 get a network operating system, such as AppleShareIP, OS X Server, Novell, or one of the Windows servers
2 install the NOS on one computer; note that ASIP is going to require a Mac capable of booting OS 9, OS X Server is going to require a Mac capable of booting OS X, and the Novell and Windows servers will require machines capable of booting Windows.
3 plug the printer directly into the computer running the NOS.
4 set up and configure the print server software in the NOS. In particular, enable the password provisions.
5 put the NOS onto the network.
This is a non-trivial task. It is also a non-cheap task. Normally network printers on small home networks are set up so that anyone can print to them at any time. I have a Brother laser on my home net; when I don't want anyone to print to it, I either remove the paper (it can't print if there's no paper to print to... ) or simply unplug the power.
May I ask why you need to password-protect the printer? Even though I have a server installed, I'd not go to all the trouble of setting up passwords for the printer. Things could get very sticky if She Who Must Be Obeyed ever found out that she was locked out of the printer...

  • Password protecting a thick Java client

Any ideas on the best way to password protect a thick Java client?
I write a standalone application. In the current version, I give users a password, but that password can easily be shared from host to host.
I need a mechanism that makes it much more difficult for joe nobody to simply get the password from his buddy.

    James
eTester can record thick client app HTTP requests, you should use:
    A external proxy recorder:
    - Options -> Current Script -> Recording -> Proxy and select record navigations in a external application.
    - Remove the ;application/* from the exclude statement
    - Set the proxy of the thick Java app to point to, localhost on port 7777
If the thick java app is a Java Applet you will need to set the JVM to point to the porxy at locahost 7777 to do so:
    - Start -> Control Panel -> Double click on Java -> under the general tab select network settings, select use proxy server and enter the proxy settings.
    Happy recording !!!!

  • Application Server slowdown with multiple proxy servers ?

Our environment has our iAS boxes talking to iWS web servers which are front-ended with iPlanet Proxy servers (Proxy 3.53 I believe). We are seeing significant slowdown if we try and hit our web apps through the proxy as opposed to going directly to the web server (bypassing the proxy servers). One of our "proxy" guys recalls hearing that there is an issue with the app server's handling of sessions if requests from the same user come in to the web server (and by extension the app server) from multiple proxy servers with different ip's. Has any body ever encountered this or does any body know if the app server has an issue handling the same sessions whose requests come from different ip addresses (different proxies)?

The proxy work with HTTP 1.0 and the webserver with HTTP 1.1.
This difference could be the cause of your problems.

  • Cache FLV on Proxy servers?

    Hi all,
We are planning to build a website that shows video through
Flash. The thing is that my customer does not want us to use a
streaming Server like Flash Media Server. (It's a shame)
Anyway, we are bound to use progressive download for Flash
Video files. I tried to find an answer on this, but so far no luck.
    Maybe you can help me:
Do proxy servers cache Flash FLV files that are progressively
downloaded? I know the local client does, but the question is if a
proxy server can cache this too, so other people in a company can
view a video with minimum use of internet bandwidth that has been
    downloaded before by someone else.
    I hope you can help....

In the general sense of cache pollution (cache poisoning) - DNS responses contain additional records that do not pertain to the query in an effort to poison the DNS server's cache. No, there is no signature for this.
I know Microsoft has a "cache pollution protection" knob on their DNS servers and recent versions of BIND also contain code to perform some additional checks and ignore the non-relevant responses.

  • Can't convert; password protected error

    Hi
Just signed up to convert pdf to excel. I work for a charity who banks with
Barclays, have download pdf version of bank statement from Barclays. When I
try to convert this to excel via export pdf files I get error message "The
file cannot be converted because it is password protected". I have spoken to
Barclays helpdesk and they assure me there is no password set in the
    download process.
    Many Thanks for your help
    John
    <private information removed>

    Hi John,
That's strange! There's not really anything to set up with regards to ExportPDF, except for making sure that you're using a supported web browser.
Please try this: Open that PDF in Reader and choose File > Properties. Click the Security tab, and tell me what's listed there. (I wonder whether there's a Document permissions password--as opposed to an Open document password.)
If there truly is no password of any kind applied to the document, please try the following so we can get to the bottom of this mystery:
Try converting a different PDF (one that you didn't download from Barclays). Does that work?
Make sure that you're using a supported browser. See http://www.adobe.com/acom/systemreqs/
Clear the browser cache and try again.
If you're on a networked computer, make sure that there are no firewall/proxy settings that are interfering with ExportPDF.
Try doing the conversion from with Reader. Does it convert without returning the password error?
Let's start there, and see how things go. I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Creator Startup problem: Password Protected Site

Hi, does anyone know why this happens. I've been using this version of creator for a few months and now every time I startup it pops up a box with the title Password Protected Site and asks for a username and password. If I keep pressing cancel it goes away but I need to do that like 20 times. I've tried my sun developer password - doesn't work either. Does anyone know what the password is?

    Hey,
after installing Netbeans 5.5 in a VMware environment (Version 5.5, Host: Ubuntu 6.10, Guest-OS: Windows XP) i was able to reproduce this problem.
In my environment i'm behind a proxy, which is automatically configured via Internet Explorer.
After getting this weird "Password protected site" popup i remembered cealex solution and tried my Proxy authentication. Et voila. it worked (i had to put it in twice!!!). So i think, whenever it has a network connection it tries to download new contents for "Articles & News" and "Blogs".
I feel that it is just a weird popup header ... ;-)
I'm also a newbie to Netbeans.

  • IWeb - Password Protect

    Hi,
I want to create a website to share my personal photos with my family.
Is there a way with iweb to password protect the site?
    Thanks

It is now known that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features Lost Once MobileMe is Discontinued or if Publishing to an FTP Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

    Enabling the root Account
As mentioned earlier, the administrator account is a powerful account. But the most powerful account on a Unix machine is the account called root. People also refer to root as the super user, but the account name itself is root. On most Unix systems, the first available account is the root account. In OS X, however, the root account is disabled by default as a security precaution.
At some time, however, you might find it necessary to enable the root account. The root account can modify system settings, modify files it does not own, modify files that are not writable by default, modify a user's password, install software, become another user without having to know the password of that account, and so on. In other words, root can do anything anywhere, making the power of root immense. Because root has so much power, the only users who can become root are users with administrative privileges. Because a user with administrative privileges can become the root user, you should assign these capabilities to only completely trusted individuals.
If you choose to enable the root account, please remember to use it with caution. Although the root account might provide some extra utility, you could accidentally wipe out your system if you do not pay careful attention to what you type. In addition, the root password you choose should be difficult to guess. Finally, become the root user only as long as necessary to complete the task at hand.
With the presence of an administrative user, it might be a long time, if ever, before you discover a need for enabling the root user. There are many approaches that you can take for dealing with the root user, from ways to use root without enabling the root account to actually enabling the root account.
Let's take a look at four different ways to gain root access to your system. Although you can choose whichever method you like, it's useful to understand that even though some of these methods appear to work magic, they all accomplish very much the same thing.
The root user is disabled because it does not have a valid password set. Because there are a number of ways to set a password, there are also several ways to enable root, including one method (the first we'll look at), that was designed specifically for assigning the root account password and only the root password. In addition, you'll see how the sudo command can provide root-level access even when the root password is disabled. We recommend that users access the root account only when absolutely necessary.
    Using the NetInfo Manager Utility
There are a couple of graphical ways to enable the root account using the NetInfo Manager utility. Do not worry if you do not understand what the NetInfo Manager utility is at this time. We will take an in-depth look at the NetInfo Manager utility in Chapter 23.
    NetInfo Manager: Method One
Click on Applications in the Finder window toolbar. Open the Utilities folder and then open the NetInfo Manager utility.
If nothing appears automatically when you open the NetInfo Manager, under the Domain menu, select Open; then select the default domain, which will be /.
Click on the lock button in the bottom-left side of the window to enable a mode that allows making changes. Enter the name and password of an administrative user; then click OK.
Under the Domain menu, select Security. Then choose Enable Root User from the submenu. Unless you have previously set a root password, a message appears with a NetInfo Error, indicating that the password is blank. Click OK.
Enter the root password you want to use, and then click Set. Remember that the root password should not be easily guessable.
Enter the password again for verification, and then click Verify.
Under the Domain menu, select Save. A request to Confirm Modification appears. Click on Update this copy.
Under the Options menu, select Restart All NetInfo Domains on Local Host. An alert asking whether you really want to restart the machine's NetInfo servers appears. Click Yes.
Click on the lock button again to prevent any further changes. Then close the NetInfo Manager.
You might find it sufficient just to click on the lock button again to save your changes. Figure 11.5 shows an example of what an enabled root account looks like in the NetInfo Manager. Note that the password field no longer has an * in it.
Figure 11.5 The root account has been enabled on this machine. Note the * that was in the password field has been replaced with an encrypted password.
    NetInfo Manager: Method Two
You could try this alternative NetInfo Manager utility method if the first one does not work for you. The danger to this method is that it copies the password of another user to the root user.
Click on Applications in the Finder window toolbar. Open the Utilities folder; then open the NetInfo Manager utility. If nothing appears automatically when you first open the NetInfo Manager, from the Domain menu, select Open and then select the default domain, which will be /.
Click on the lock button in the bottom-left side of the window to enable a mode that allows making changes. Enter the name and password of an administrative user. Then click OK.
Click on Users in the second list, and then click on a user you created whose password you know.
Double-click on the value across from passwd in the bottom section of the window and copy it. What you are looking at is an encoded copy of the user's password.
Click on root in the users list. Note that the default value for the password for root is *, which means that no one can log in as root right now. Using * in the passwd field is a way to lock a user from the machine.
Double-click in the field with the *; then paste in the encoded password from the previous user to replace the *. The * should no longer be present when you are done.
Select Save from the Domain menu. A request to Confirm Modification appears. Click Update This Copy.
Select Restart All NetInfo Domains on Local Host under the Options menu. An alert asking whether you really want to restart the machine's NetInfo servers appears. Click Yes.
Click the lock button again to prevent any further changes; then close the NetInfo Manager.
Again, note that you might find it sufficient to just click on the lock button again to save your changes.
Using the OS X Installation CD
Because the OS X installation CD comes with an option to reset a user's password, you could use the installation CD itself to enable the root user.
To enable the root account using the OS X installation CD, do the following:
    Insert the OS X CD.
With the CD in the CD-ROM drive, reboot the machine. Hold the C key while the machine reboots.
Wait for the Installer to appear and then select the Reset Password option under the Installer menu.
Select the OS X disk that contains the root account you want to enable. If you notice a spinning CD icon appear after you have chosen the Reset Password option, don't wait for the spinning to end to select your OS X disk. The System Administrator (root) user appears as the default user.
Enter a new password and then re-enter the password for verification. Click Save. Click OK when the Password Saved box appears.
Quit the Password Reset application, quit the Installer, and click Restart.
Using sudo at the Command Line
Although we won't start looking at the command-line utilities in depth until Chapter 15, "Command-Line Applications," we take this opportunity to demonstrate some ways to accomplish tasks that root might do by using the sudo command-line utility. It is all right if you do not feel comfortable with trying anything you see in this section at this time. When you are more familiar with working with the command line, you can return to this section. If you do want to try anything in this section, you can run the commands in a terminal window. Just open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Using sudo to Run Commands as root
sudo is a command-line utility that allows use of the root account without necessarily enabling root.
For example, in a terminal window, you could use sudo to reboot the machine now:
    [localhost:~] joray% sudo shutdown -r now
The most common way to use sudo is to preface each command that you want root to do with the sudo utility. If you are asked for a password, use the password of the user who is executing the sudo command. If the user is not eligible to execute sudo, the command is not executed.
If you need to execute a few commands in a row as root, you could try a couple alternative uses of sudo. When you are done with the tasks for root, type exit at the end of your session.
In this example, your shell is elevated to that of root until you exit the session:
    [localhost:~] joray% sudo -s
We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these two things:
#1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
    Password:
    [localhost:~] root#
Notice that the prompt changes to include root#, as a reminder that you now have the power of root.
In this example, sudo is used to run su to become root until you exit the session. When root is enabled, su can be used to switch to the root user. When using su by itself, the password you enter to become root is that of root, rather than yours, as you do with sudo.
    [localhost:~] joray% sudo su
    Password:
    [localhost:/Users/joray] root#
Notice that in this example, the prompt also includes root# as a reminder of your power as root. Remember, to return to the status of a regular user, type exit when you are done with your root session.
Using sudo to Enable the root Account
Recall that the sudo command is used to execute a command that root might execute. A way to enable the root account is to use sudo to execute passwd, which is a command used to change passwords.
    Here is an example:
    [localhost:~] joray% sudo passwd root
    Password:
    Changing password for root.
    New password:
    Retype new password:
    [localhost:~] joray%
The password that you initially enter is your password. Then you supply a password for root, and re-enter it for verification. If you mistype the password, you will be prompted again, as shown in this example:
    [localhost:~] joray% sudo passwd root
    Password:
    Changing password for root.
    New password:
    Retype new password:
Mismatch; try again, EOF to quit.
    New password:
    Retype new password:
    [localhost:~] joray%

  • NI Installers & downloaders do not support proxy servers requiring authentication

Hello, I'm posting this on the LabVIEW forum since it applies to the LabVIEW installer and evaluation version downloader, but it also applies to other products that use the NI meta-installer framework and other products that use the NI downloader.
We are behind a corporate firewall which requires the use of a proxy for internet access.  In addition, the proxy requires authentication, which I believe is the complicating factor.
When running an NI installer, if we check the box that requests that the installer contact NI for new notifications, this will inevitably fail when trying to connect to the notification server.
Also when trying to use the NI downloader to download drivers or other products, the download always fails.
Most other software (e.g. Browsers, Dropbox, etc.) are able to use the proxy and allow entry of the username and password (either through a pop-up username/password dialog or configuration page).
This has generally not been a showstopper problem, but since it affects the NI installer framework it impacts many products and thus they would all benefit from a single bug fix.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hi GeekySeb,
Are you using the most current versions of the NI Downloader and NI Update Service?  The problems with proxy servers have been repaired in both of them.
You can download the current version of the NI Update Service here, either by using the NI Downloader or by downloading the installation file directly.  This option should exist for most of our software downloads, so if the NI Downloader does not appear to be working for you then there is an alternate download option.
    http://www.ni.com/download/ni-update-service-14.0/2617/en/
If none of these options work for you, I would recommend contacting your company's support group for help in configuring your firewall to be able to download NI's software.

  • How can I protect my data in numbers from unintentional user of my iPad by other family members? In other words, how can I password protect my numbers and other apps from apple computer company?

I have other members of my family use my iPad for educational/recreational use, young children who may want to play kid games. I don't want them to accdently get into my data stored in the three business apps from apple. I would like to password protect these files.
I would also like to log out of the email systems that I use, so some one else can use this device to access their own emails. By leaving my accounts open al the time, is really asking for trouble from a host of sources.
I can't believe that the iPad is not designed to protect the privacy and data from prying eyes ... Un intuitional as it may be.
Please fix this issue so I create my info on this device and enjoy it fully. Or tell me how I can protect my data.
    Thnax.

Thanx for your response. Any data stored anywhere should be able to be protected from stealing, malicious destruction or unintentional destruction. Theo ad an be stolen and without any kind ofpassword protection, the thief could get into your sensitive data.
If Apple wants iPad to become a business tool that can be used with ideas, thots, data protected, then Apple needs to provide this protection to it's customers. Now it's unto the users to use it or not.
I know iPad is being considered to be used by doctors, and can u imagine the confidentiality requirements of HIPPA rules... It will make this device not usable without data protection. I am sureweall have heard about hacking going on at all levels. It's surprising that this device's software is left unprotected.
My iPad may be sitting on my desk and my 3 year old grand daughter would pick it up and start "playing" with it. That means I can't store anything on this machine that may possibly be changed.
I have discussed this with specialists in apple stores, and those who have been around info technology understand my concerns and they may forward this request further up. They do not have the answer for it..... So far.
I think data security should be everyone's concern... Be it a one person device or multiple user device.
I hope that some responsible people at Apple would read this and provide the protection that will make this device lot more acceptable in the business world.
