Word PDF Hyperlinks and Safari

I have a word document that contains a series of HTML and PDF links.
All html links in the document open fine on the Mac, whilst PDF links, open in Safari as garbage/ASCII code. If I cut/paste the link into Safari directly, the PDFs open fine, or if you cut/paste the link into Safari's download manager, it downloads the PDF and they open fine in preview. This issue is also explained in this archived post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2275472
Following is the testing I've done to date.
• On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 5.0.3 with Word 2011 the PDFs opens as garbage in Safari.
• On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 5.0.3 with Word 2008 the PDFs opens as garbage in Safari.
• On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 4.0.3 with Word 2011 we get an error "Unable to open http://.pdf Cannot download the information you requested"
• On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 4.0.3 with Word 2008 the PDFs opens as garbage in Safari.
• If Firefox is configured to be the default browser, we are prompted to download the PDF file and it opens fine in Mac OS X Preview.
• In Parallels/Windows 7, when we open the document in Word 2007 for Windows and click on a PDF link, it opens in Safari (for Mac) fine.
• In Safari, I have disabled the AdobePDFViewer.plugin by placing it in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Disabled Plug-Ins, that made no difference. So I think the whole Adobe Reader aspect has nothing to do with the situation.
• It works fine in 10.5.8 with Safari 3.2.3 and Word 2008.
• Happens in a .docx and a .doc document
• If I open this link directly (PDF Link from Apple) in Safari -http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Manuals/macos/0342049.PDF It opens fine as a PDF within Safari. Click on it as a link pasted in Word, I get the same issue.
• In Open Office with the same document all the links including PDF links work in Safari, except OpenOffice has lost a lot of the formatting of the document.
• In NeoOffice with the same document all the links including PDF links work in Safari, except NeoOffice has lost a lot of the formatting as well.
• Using iWork /Pages with the same document, all the links work fine.
My conclusion is that Word for Mac is the culprit. A colleague advised me that in his opinion, when you click on a PDF link in a Word document, and you see the message “Word is preparing to load this document”, it is not sending the correct “content type” to Safari and therefore Safari does not know what to do with the document.
I am playing around with a preference pane called “Default Apps” from
http://www.rubicode.com/Software/Bundles.html#RCDefaultApp
To see if it can help the situation. Yet it’s a little difficult when external clients need to read this document, and I do not feel comfortable installing or recommending to install third party plugins/solutions so they can read our document, it should just work.
I have also submitted this to Microsoft.
I have thought of a workaround though and it has been tested and works, embed the PDFs into some HTML code, and use the HTML code as a web link in the Document as opposed to a direct link to a PDF. The code would look something like this.
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<BODY>
<embed type="application/pdf" src="http://www.example.com/example.pdf#scrollbar=0" width="100%" height="100%"/>
</BODY>
</HEAD>
</HTML>
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Chris.

I, as well, have this same problem. Further, I want to convert the Word 2011 doc to pdf and have links that work. Forget it! I have to use some other app to do that. Right now, I am using deskPDF Editor to "update" all the links the the pdf doc. That works. BUT, when I need to change the original Word doc, I have to create another pdf and do all the links updating again - over 30!
I am attempting to find a pdf-to-Word converter, either online or stand-alone, that can get me back to Word with the links intact.
So far, all of this has been a real bummer.

  • Pdf hyperlink and CF

I am developing a coldfusion web application that contains a
page displaying a pdf created in Autocad. The pdf contains a
building's layout and a hyperlink has been created in each of the
    rooms containing the room number.
The question is - how can I get CF to:-
    1) Detect the user clicking on the hyperlink in the pdf
    2) Pick up the room number contained in the hyperlink
    3) Prepend the correct forwarding page information in front
    of the room number
    4) Get CF to then navigate to that page (in the same window)
I do not want to hard code the full URL into the pdf
hyperlink as the system may move servers etc in the future.
    Hope this makes sense!

I think the problem might be that PDF's are opened locally
from the client so there is no context to resolve a relative URL.
    Suggestion:
Dedicate a domain name to the location of your .cfm page and
hard code that URL into the PDF hyperlinks. If the system changes
servers, just remap the domain in the DNS to point to the new
    location.
    Hope that helps.

  • PDF viewer and Safari

The acrobat PDF viewer does not open when reading PDF files in Safari. The pdf file is opened with "preview" in safari instead. How do I get the PDF viewer to work with Safari. I have installed the acrobat reader and it detected that PDF viewer was not installed and installed it but it still doesn't open in a pdf viewer format.
    Any solutions?

    Songstress,
I believe that this problem can happen if you have conflicting PDF plug-ins in your Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plugins folder. If you want to use Adobe's readers, you can use Acrobat's "Repair" option (I believe it's under the Help menu in Acrobat Pro. If you prefer to use Apple's own reader, remove Adobe's PDF plugin from the above-mentioned folder. You may want to check out Manfred Shubert's popular PDF Browser plugin (http://www.shubert-it.com/).
Also, it would be work checking your ~/Library/Internet Plugins folder (in your Home directory). That is normally empty, so if you have a PDF plugin there, it could be messing things up.

  • How to activate Image, Pdf, Hyperlink and Scale Prices in SRM-MDM

    Hi Experts,
I have requirement to activate the following features:
    1. Image
    2. PDF
    3. Hyperlink
    4. Scale Prices
These should be activated and should be available in the current business' internal catalogs so that users could be able to easily identify the item they want to create.
Does anyone know the steps on how to proceed on these?
I have read and researched about this and I found out that objects should be imported in Data Manager and the link between items should be mapped in Import Manager.
I tried this first in Image, I was able to successfully import image. I tried adding the link first in existing item in data manager by right click on the Image field->Add/Link New... -> I was brought to the screen where I should add the image again, so I added ti again and there I was able to link the image and the item.
I understand that for the image to be available in the end-user's internal catalog screen, I should modify UI Configuration. So I added the Image field by going to Customize Display Tab-> and adding it in the Item Lists, Cart Preview, Compare, Item details radio button. But when I checked on end-user's internal catalog screen, Image column is still not there.
I believe PDF and Image has the same process. But how could I add the link between image and item for the entire catalog items?
Please also help on how to activate the Hyperlink and Scale price functionality.
    Thank you so much!

How can I revert Safari to open PDF files in Preview again?

How can I revert Safari to open PDF files in Preview again?
You don't need to do that; Safari is perfectly capable of rendering a PDF by itself. You don't need Preview or Adobe Reader.
    To do that again:
    1. Quit Safari if it's running.
    2. Launch Adobe Reader, go to Preferences > Internet and uncheck the box at the top of that window where it says "Display PDFs in browser using:".
    3. Go to /Library/Plug Ins and delete the Adobe PDFviewer Plugin.
    4. Enter the following command in Terminal, press Enter, then quit Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool false
    5. Restart Safari and try dragging a PDF file from your Mac onto an open browser window.

  • Opening PDF's In Safari 3.2.1 Crashes Safari

    Hello,
I'm having a real problem with PDF files in Safari 3.2.1. After a PDF file loads (which can take forever while the fans go into overdrive on my iMac) and I can actually read through the PDF, I then close the PDF window and Safari will always quit unexpectedly when I actually "quit" Safari. I get the "crash report" dialog. Sometimes, Safari just quits unexpectedly when trying to load the PDF or when trying to close the PDF window without using the "quit" command from the Safari menu.
What happened this morning is that I got a spinning beachball and then a complete freeze after trying to close a PDF window. My fan went into overdrive (never heard it this noisy before) and I had to reboot my machine.
I made the mistake of installing Adobe Reader 9 when I updated our systems to Mac OS X 10.4.11 a couple of weeks ago - Adobe Reader 9 was NOT a good app to install nor to use (at least, not for us) so I uninstalled it and reinstalled Abobe Acrobat 7.1 which works well for our needs.
Is there a way to disable PDF viewing in Safari completely so that PDF files just download to the desktop? Safari 3.2.1 just doesn't seem to like PDF files. Not for us.
    Thanks so much,
    Gerard

    Hi Gerard
You'll need to use at least Adobe Reader 8.1 with Safari 3, otherwise, Safari crashes. To install Reader 8.1.3, go here. At the site, click on the drop down selection menu and choose "Power PC 10.4.3 - 10.4.10". Otherwise, Adobe points you to Reader 9 instead of 8.
Before installing Reader 8, go to your HD>Library>Internet Plug-ins folder and move to the trash the existing Adobe PDF plug-in. This way, you're ensured of a clean install of version 8.
After the install, and prior to opening Safari, I suggest you go to your Applications>Utilities folder, open Disk Utility, highlight your HD and select "repair permissions".
Post back and let us know if that stops the crashes.

  • Select a text from a word/pdf document for tagging.

    Hi,
After an overwhelming response for my [first thread|Thumbnail creation during Image Upload; , I am hoping that my second post will have a solution.
I am currently working on a knowledge management tool using ABAP WD. The requirement is to open the existing documents and select some text and tag/categorize it.  I also found out that using flash islands, it is possible to get the selected text from textField and pass it back to the ABAP WD binded variable.
Is there a way to display word/pdf file and perform the text tagging in WD ? using office integration ? Kind help would be greatly appreciated.

    Never mind--I figured it out.

i have been trying to save word pdf excel and ppts on my ipad and also send these files as attachements using gmail App but I am unable. please advise.

Open the file you want to attack in an iPad program that will open it (Docs 2 Go for example). The program should have a share icon somewhere. Click on that and then select email. Without a little trickery I don't know how to attach more than one item per email.

  • Word doc hyperlinked PDFs open as text in Safari

When I try to open a hyperlink to a pdf file by clicking on it in Word, with Mac Word 12.2.6, Safari displays the pdf code instead of the rendered pdf file. It seems likes Safari thinks it's a text file, instead of a pdf.
    Any ideas?
(I got it to open in Firefox by changing my default browser in Safari prefs, but I'd like to know if Word or Safari is somehow messed up and how I can fix it. I've already nuked the prefs for both Word and Safari a couple of times, no fix. I'd like to keep Safari as my default browser if at all possible.)
This is also from an archived topic from 12/09 that was never answered, but b/c it's archived I can't add to it. Thx for looking.

Ok, here is some more info:
From the pull down menu under safari, choose reset. Choose the items you wish cleared. Depending on if you have passwords and such saved, I would reset everything.
I remember reading in the past about Adober Reader causing issues with Safari browser and pdfs. There is a preference in Adobe Reader that you set to either let Safari or Adobe Reader read pdf's when clicked on in Safari. Try toggling it both ways, resetting Safari each time before you try. Also, make sure you adobe reader is up to date.
You also might try posting on the Microsoft Mac forums
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/
It's also possible you accidently configured files of a type to open with a particular app.
Be sure that all pdf's are opening with what you want and text files are opening with want you want (from a normal file on your desktop).

  • Downloaded an app and now my safari keeps popping up with ads and words are hyperlinked on webpages. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Hi,
I was downloading Skype for mac last night, and now my safari isn't working correctly (has a lot of popups and and words are hyperlinked on my webpages I pull up now. I think I have the 'DownLite' trojan but I am unsure of how to get rid of it. I saw a post in March that Linc helped with describing how to fix it, but unfortunately, it didn't work for me (because I think mine is in a different folder but am unsure how to find it). I have the UNIX shell script diagnostic scan if needed. Can anyone help me get rid of this?? Thank you for your help!

  • How can I convert MS Word to PDF (w/ hyperlinks and bookmarks)?

    Hello,
I have a 1000+ page MS Word document that I'm trying to convert to PDF.
If in MS Word I select Adobe PDF > Convert to Adobe PDF my system hangs. (I've let it sit for over 2.5 hours with no progress.)
I can easily print to a .prn file and then distill the file to create a PDF. However, when I do this method, the PDF comes through with no hyperlinks and no bookmarks. Are there any conversation settings so that this method will create the hyperlinks/bookmarks?
Given the size of the PDF, hyperlinks/bookmarks are extremely important. Any other ideas/tips would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Kara

Please itemize how I can convert a MS Word document into a PDF document.

  • Safari PDF Hyperlinks

Just wanted to throw this ot to the community. As we know, Safari 5.1.2 did not allow hyperlinks to open in PDFs created
in Safari. In 5.1.2, the gloved hand would highlight a link but the link would be dead. With the 10.7.3 update, Safari was also
updated to 5.1.3. I was eagerly waiting for a Safari udate which would fix this flaw in Safari. The fix is actually present in the latest
WebKit nightly build. Safari functionality has actually diminished in 5.1.3 form 5.1.2. The gloved hand no longer hightlights a link as
in the 5.1.2 version. This feature is important to me as I am sure it is for others. Why is Apple dragging it's feat on this?

The link is setup properly. It's been checked by a lot of people. Most of them, including me, are very experience computer people who are used to trouble shooting. But, this is one problem we've not been unable to solve
It's for an educational writing project. The kids are editing a Word document and there are additional materials for them in the pdfs. The Word docs will be on lots of different computers in many schools and it would be difficult for the teachers and students to keep track of all the files. Plus, each word file would have to be customized for each computer so that a local link could find the files.

  • Word 2000 hyperlinks don't work in .pdf created with Acrobat 9 Pro

I'm new to Adobe Forums, so please overlook the effrontery of my posting a query previously discussed. Perhaps someone can simply reply with a link to the prior discussion. I have installed Acrobat 9.2 Pro in 2 computers, one running XP64 Pro, the other XP32 Pro. Word 2000 is installed in both. All Word hyperlinks work fine, but after .pdf conversion using Acrobat 9.2 Pro, none of these work. In 'Preferences', I have navigated Convert to PDF > Microsoft Office Office Word > Edit Settings > Add Links to Adobe PDF File and confirmed that the Add Links feature is enabled. Having ascertained that this glitch is not specific to either XP64 or XP32 operating systems, I uninstalled Acrobat 9.2 Pro from the XP32 computer and reinstalled Acrobat 6.1 Pro. Then using the same Word 2000 document, I converted to .pdf using Acrobat 6.1 Pro, with no problems whatsoever. This looks like a serious bug in Acrobat 9 Pro, which the telephone support folks have acknowledged. Alas, they won't give me the tiniest clue how to resolve it, nor any workaround, but merely refer me to AdobeForums.com for help. I suspect a corrective patch or 'upgrade' will be forthcoming, but meanwhile, if anyone knows of a workaround, please enlighten me. Thanks. /rmbrown

Thank you, CtDave, for your speedy reply and for the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' knowledge base article. Word 2000 is one of Microsoft's masterpieces - by disabling 'autosave', the application is totally stable, does not require 'activation' by Microsoft. Acrobat 9 enables 'saving' of interactive .pdf forms, a most valuable feature and one much appreciated by anyone completiing such forms. There must be more to this issue than 'incompatibility', because I can create a test Word 2000 document, hyperlink a valid URL, convert to .pdf with Acrobat 9, and the hyperlink works fine in Acrobat 9. When I attempt to do this using a much more complex Word 2000 document, embedded with scores of hyperlinks, these links fail to work following conversion to .pdf with Acrobat 9, but work fine following conversion to .pdf with  Acrobat 6. I can then use Acrobat 9 to open the .pdf created with Acrobat 6, and successfully edit any of these fully functional hyperlinks using the 'Link tool'. I don't know who prepared the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' article (AF1908DCd01) - no credits were cited, and I'm far from certain that this authentically belongs to Adobe's knowledge base. So I appreciate your sharing this information with me, but I cannot say that my question has been definitively answered. If you have any further information or tips, please reply in this thread. /rmbrown

  • Hyperlinks do not work when exporting to PDF (Crystal and Visual Cut)

I have a question about Crystal Reports XI Release 2 and Visual Cut 11. I create reports in Crystal and export them using Visual Cut. Some reports contain hyperlinks to files on a network drive. However, the links only work while in Crystal. The PDF files that are printed through Visual Cut display the links, but they are not clickable. How can this issue be fixed?
In case it helps, the links also work when I export reports from Crystal to HTML, Word, and Excel, but not when I export to Acrobat. I believe it is a problem with tagging/accessibilityfeatures. So is there a setting/formula in Crystal or Visual Cut that would allow the exported PDF files to be accessible?

While Crystal exports to pdf indeed lose hyperlink functionality (both in Crystal as well as in Visual CUT), Visual CUT allows you to use Crystal formulas (acting as hidden Tags) to create hyperlinks in the resulting pdf file. Another option supported by Visual CUT it to automatically detect file references in the pdf text and turn them into hyperlinks.  Contact MilletSoftware for more detail.
