Workflow for creating poster-sized prints?

I'm planning to use Scott Kirby's "increase by 10%" technique (essentially, multiple 10% image resizes) for turning small photos into poster-sized prints. However, I don't know when in the workflow process this should be done. Is it the last step (i.e., after sharpening) or the first step (before cropping, color correction, etc.) or someplace in between?
Any suggestions?

I would crop initially. Next I would try the serial 10% resampling process to see if it yields an acceptable result. I would sharpen last. Recently a poster advised sharpening as an intermediate step, but I remain unconvinced.

  • Poster-sized prints

I recently did a product shoot using a Nikon D700 in RAW format to produce images for a poster-sized print, 8'x8', and am curious as to what mb size is adequate for this type of work?  Is a RAW file better to work with when producing the final image or is TIFF just as adequate?  If anyone has any experience in this, please respond.
    Thanks,
    Andrea Hansen Photography

Talk to the people who are going to print it and get a minimum ppi. Then do the math at actual size to see if you have enough pixels. I've done banners at 25 ppi. How crisp it looks depends entirely on the viewing distance - think angle of total field of view.
The D700 has 4256 x 2832 pixels, which isn't really a lot by present standards (which is very easy for me to say since I just picked up my new D800...but I've done things like that with D300 and D700).
A square format puts you at a slight disadvantage, because you're restricted to the short side. My initial thought is that this is not much to work with, but again, it might work at some distance.
Upsampling is always an option, but I've never been comfortable with that. I prefer stitching if possible.

  • Best workflow for creating logsheets before ingesting.

I'm looking for the best workflow for creating detailed log sheets of my avchd footage before ingesting/transferring it to FCP. I have many hours of footage shot with my Sony NX5U and only want to ingest the necessary clips. I'm using FCP 6.5 on a MacPro tower. Thanks.

    >I'm using FCP 6.5
NO you are not.  You might be using FCP 6.0.5.
Well, the only way you can ingest only sections of tapeless media is by using Log and Transfer.  And you cannot Log clips first, and transfer later.  You cannot do the same thing you did with tape, make a Batch Capture list.  So you would look at your footage in the FCP L&T interface, and you can send one to be transcoded while you move onto the next one to watch.  That can happen at the same time.
But, there's another issue here.  The Sony NX5U uses an AVCHD format that is slightly different than normal...not that there is a normal.  But I discovered that importing clips up to 10 min in length work fine, but anything over 10 min, and it took 4-5 times longer to import.  meaning a 30 min clip took just over two hours.  It was something that ClipWrap2 addressed before FCP did...and they only addressed the issue with the FCP 7.0.3 update.  FCP 6.0.5...or even the last update for that version, 6.0.6, doesn't address this.  There might be issues in importing this footage into FCP 6.
And the other options...Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere...don't have a "log and transfer" type interface.  They bring in the full clips only.  With Premiere, you are stuck with them being full length.  But with Avid, you acccess the footage via AMA (Avid Media Access), and then you'd make your selects on a sequence, and then consolidate/transcode only the footage on the sequence.
And no, there's no way to make a logging sheet for these apps either.
The best you can do is watch the footage, note the timecode, and manually enter those numbers when you go to bring in the footage.

  • Best workflow for creating games for pc and starling games in AIR

best workflow for creating games for pc and starling games in AIR.
I need to develop for tablets with starling and AIR as well as for pc without starling ie: downloading from a server.
    In starling you have to
    1. instantiate starling
    2. use texture atlases for loading graphic assets - well its the recommended way
    3. use juggler
    etc...
ie: with all these differences is it best to:
    1. create completely different projects
    2. just create different classes for the starling specific parts
    3. use a conditional compile constant
        eg: CONFIG::STARLING
                "then do this"
    or      CONFIG::CPU
              "then do this"
I currently have the latter but it feels a little messy. I would prefer separate classes for each platform where the image loading is concerned.
There must be so many game developers out there but in large gaming companies that know exactly what to do. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction with a book or something.
    CHEERS

The other thing is that I can't see the games being very different as you suggest. I have downloaded Lee Brimelows tut on creating a starling game on Lynda.com and the code is great for creating games using states for menu, play, gameover etc... The only difference is that he uses texture atlas and there is a great difference in loading them etc... so technically you would only need to handle them in a different class as collision and the rest of game play should be the same in both. I think!!!
Well, actually not exactly but near enough - maybe it might be easier to create separate projects and just cut and paste the new code introduced.

  • Resizing Photos for Poster-sized Prints

On pages 168 through 170 of  his CS3 book Scott Kelby recommends the following procedure for making extra large prints.
Image > Image Size: Type in the new, larger document size dimensions.
Then type in a larger resolution. Kelby recommends 360 pixels/inch.
Lastly and most importantly, for the sampling method, he says to choose Bicubic Sharper (best for reduction) instead of Bicubic Smoother (best for enlargement).
By doing this Scott Kelby disregards the Photoshop recommendation, Bicubic Smoother and uses Bicubic Sharper instead.
I am planning to make some large prints and am unsure as to whether to follow the Kelby recommendation or not. I would appreciate any advice or recommendations on this?

Pixels != (not equal) print quality. There are endless discussions on ppi vs. dpi vs. lpi on the Illustrator forums and if you read them, you will see that there is no point at all in using more pixels just because the physical size of a document once its printed gets larger. There may be specific reasons as to why Mr. Kelby recommends it in his book, but it certainly isn't necessary many times. Now "large" is a very vague definition, so if you can be more specific on what you plan on doing, it would be easier to gicve you better advise and avoid sending you off on producing unecessary Gigabyte size files...

  • Specs and workflow for creating opening/closing titles for video

I'm trying to create specs/workflow for videos that I will be adding opening and closing titles to (black background with colored text), using QuickTime Player 7 (Pro).
The videos are .mov, AVC coding, 1280x720, millions, 30fps, a sample video had a data rate of 7,463 kbits/second.
I created 1280x720 300dpi (perhaps I should have used 72dpi?), saved as a .jpg (highest quality), then copied the .jpg contents into a QuickTime Player 7 (Pro) blank document multiple times until I had enough frames for my need. The resultant video was very large; 339,743 kbps/second. I then exported to H.264, which brings the data rate down to only 214 kbits/second (and looks fine) and then copied that into the head of my AVC coding video.
    Questions:
    1) When I exported to H.264, the x pixels increased by 6, to 1286. After pasting that video into the AVC coding (1280x720) video, the resultant movie is 1280x720. Did my graphic get compressed by 6 pixels horizontally?
    2) Does my method of converting the huge graphic movie to H.264, and then pasting it into the AVC coding make sense? The combined video has AVC coding, according to Movie Inspector; does the H.264 of the graphic get converted automatically? Any better way to approach creating my titles?
Note: these AVC coding videos may get converted to H.264 for some use, but for now, I'm keeping the highest quality (source) video I have to work with.
    Thanks,
    Bob

"First, tell use why you're not using FCP's titling and keying capabilities."
    I don't own FCP.
"Then, explain why you're doing it this way."
I'm able to create graphics with plenty of control in a graphics program (PhotoShop in this case).
"There is no dpi in video, there are only pixels."
Sorry, I posted my thread then realized I left out a bit of info, but couldn't edit the post. I should have written that I created my graphics file in PhotoShop, hence the dpi reference.
"A black background for text is not the same as using an alpha channel."
OK. The portion of my video with titling stands by itself; that is, I'm not overlaying titles on existing video. Is there a use for alpha channel if I'm working up standalone title video frames? Uses less data rate?
It seems from your inference I would be best served by purchasing FCP, so I'll probably take that advice and buy it.
From a general video production point of view, I'd still like to learn more about creating titles in a graphics app and bringing them into QT Player; what format to bring them in as (e.g., H.264 into an AVC coding video, as I've done, or ?), and what happens when my graphics video gets converted from 1280x720 to 1286x780 (AVC export to H.264), and then brought into an AVC codec movie, and the movie remains at 1280x720-- does the graphic get horizontally widened, or the vertical compressed? Thanks.

  • Workflow for JV posting

    Hi All,
Can you assist us on how the below requirement can be achieved in SAP.
For specific document types, the user must not be able to post the JV, if the total amount of the document is more than specified amount limit , say 10K (local currency). He can only PARK the document and the other user /manager have to review the document (JV) and have an option to approve or reject the JV with comments/reason for rejection.
When the Doc is approved by the Manager/Other User, it has to been posted in the books (to the financials) and if rejected, the Doc has to return back to the creator of the Doc for modification as per the comment made in the rejection note.
A mail has to triggered when the Doc has been parked and also when the manager approves or rejects the document.
What are the setting has to been carried out in Finance module to implement the control.
We know that through workflow this can be achieved, but not sure the process.
    Appreciate your earlier response.
    Do revert.
    Regards,
    TIM

    Hi,
According to me, you should activate workflow for Parking Documents.
As per your requirement, first of all you will need to create workflow variant for parking document in SPRO> Financial Accounting (New) > Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable > Business Transactions > Incoming Invoices/Credit Memos > Carry Out and Check Settings for Document Parking > Create Workflow Variant for Parking Documents. In this, you can put an amount from which you want to initiate the workflow.
Then, assign to company code. Then you will need to define release approval group and path. Both will be assigned to to your document type with the combination of your variant.
You just go through the process, you will come to know the things and also take the help of ABAPer to determine the sub workflow and parent workflow.

  • What is the workflow for creating templates in full FrameMaker and pushing them to XML Author?

    Hi All,
I'm working for a large organization (3000+) that is subdivided into 60+ business units.  I'm trying to figure out the workflow for using full FrameMaker to create a template that I can provide my business units to fill in via XML Author, send back to me, and then I can publish into a number of products using the Tech. Comm. Suite.  I am somewhat new to XML so I am not sure how to get my structure and format to translate.
Can anybody clarify what the general workflow would be for this process?  All I have been able to find is the flowchart showing full FM to XML to XML Author and back to full FM.  From my test driving of the Tech Comm Suite though it has not appeared that easy.
    ---Corey---

    Hi Corey...
Here's a rough outline of what is needed.
    1) First, you'll need to define the data model that your documents are using. This could be some existing model like DITA or a new custom model. Depending on the complexity of your document's needs, this may drive that decision.
    2) Once you've got a model, you'll need to create a structure application (in full FM). This structure application defines the model and appearance of documents. This will provide the fundamental structure of the "template" as well as placeholder text for the elements where you want people to provide information.
    3) Then you have to install the structure application on each of the XML Author installations. This involves copying the structure application definitions file (structapps.fm) onto the client systems as well as the structure application files (into the proper location as indicated in the structure application definition). The structure application definition may reference these files at a network location, which might simplify the deployment, but would require that each person is connected to that network in order to create the files (pros/cons with this approach).
Once that's set up, your XML Author users should (in theory) be able to create a new document using the new structure application, then send you the resulting files. Lots of hand waving here .. but that's the general idea.
    Cheers,

  • Sample workflow for Create new user in IDM

    Hi,
I'm new to Identity Manager. I had obtain task to create new workflow with this requirements:
    - create new user
    - make some approvals
    - deploy this user to some resource (AD, LDAP, SQL)
I have problem with first step. I tried to create user by the help of http://www.javapassion.com/idm/ create user samples, but I'm affraid that mentioned samples aren't enough for real deployment. They are good for understanding of IDM.
So I decided to explore workflows/rules that are used as default in IDM. I think Create User dialog that is in menu Accounts -> List Accounts -> New Actions -> New User . But I'm not sure which workflow is used for this dialog. Is it Create User in ProvisioningTask, or some template in TaskDefinition, or Create User Template in TaskTemplate, or something another?
(I'm listing this templates through List Object in Debug interface).
    I appreciate every help
    Petr

    Chapo,
thanks a lot for informations. I have try to find corresponding process mapping for 'Create User' under Configure tab. I found process 'createUser'. So I looked for 'createUser' workflow under 'Task definition' or 'Configuration' in debug. But there was no such workflow. Only workflow with similar name was 'Create Resource User', but it doesn't look like right workflow. I expected workflow with name 'Create User'. Does anybody have this workflow under 'Task Definition' in debug?

  • What is the workflow for creating Flash Builder 4.7 Applications?

Now that Design View has been removed from Flash Builder 4.7 I was wondering what the proposed workflow is for creating software?
What is the suggested flow? How can a developer layout a screen visually? Or is it true that this is just no longer possible?

  • Workflow for creating new item and updating list

I believe that the answer is easy, but because I am already having trouble with this issue for few days I am getting blind to see the solution:)
I have two lists and a workflow running behind. Basically when new item is created in first list, workflow makes a copy in second list. Because this workflow works only when new item is added, I have a problem when item is updated, items in second list just
disappear - are empty. I believe that I have a problem with workflow, because somehow I should also have in to update list in case of change.
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the workflow you created was not started when an item was updated in first list.
Did you check the option “Start workflow automatically when an item is changed” in SharePoint Designer?
Did you sign in as system accout?
Please use another list to check whether this issue occurs.
If this issue still occurs, please provide screenshot about the details of the workflow in order to find out what goes wrong.
    Thanks,

  • Workflow for creating animations for web (Creative Suite CS6)

    Hi,
I was wondering about what the best workflow is for creating animated videos for the web (say, YouTube) once the project reaches the "computer" stage (i.e. story, look etc. are all decided).
Is it best to use Photoshop, Illustrator or Fireworks to draw everything if the software to animate these drawings is After Effects?
The project I'm talking about is as of yet hypothetical but would be relatively short (90 seconds) and simple as I don't have much experience with this at all - hence my question.
I've been looking around for a good set of basic tutorials but can't really work out how to go about this from start to finish using the Adobe Suite.
    Thanks!

size is mort important than format. I prefer PSD files, but png, tiff, tga, even jpeg if you do not need transparency. Just make them big enough that at some point in your composition they are scaled to 100%. IOW, if you are drawing full frame animation cells for HD they do not need to be any bigger than 1920 X 1080 pixels. If you are going to scale them up or move in on some details then the area you are going to be pushing in on needs to be 1980 X 1920.

  • Can someone recommend an efficient workflow for creating and maintaining web ads in multiple sizes?

I work for an online news site that runs ads from multiple clients. These ads (animated gifs) are sometimes run across multiple sizes (728x90, 510x60, 300x250, etc), and are often changed week to week.
Currently, I have a separate photoshop file for each ad & when a client requests a change, I have no choice but to go through and edit each individual ad size, then re-export themas animated gifs. Some clients require 4-5 different ad sizes, per ad, and if they change their mind on something, I have to go back and edit 4-5 ads. Each set of ads is saved in a dated folder that rests within the client's folder. We are extremely busy at work & the ads are piling up. Just wondering if someone had a good suggestion for an easier way to create & maintain these ads. I haven't used the asset generator...I'm wondering if that is a solution?
Also...bonus question ...with auto-select checked, is there a way to select items that are in a grouped folder without selecting the entire group? I currently have to uncheck "auto-select", select the layer in the layers panel and then am able to move the object.
    Thanks in advance!

With the auto select, there is either a check box or a drop down selection to have it select layer or group.
Smart objects don't work for creating different size gifs?

  • Workflow for creating files for online printing

I recently asked a question about making a copy of a file in Aperture 2 but am still unsure as to the best method to use. The original is cropped for posting to the web, and the duplicate is to be cropped for standard print sizes. I didn't quite get a clear answer, so I wanted to ask what other users' workflow is for preparing images for printing at an online site (I use adorama, which has an aperture plugin). In my case, my "ideal" crop, posted to a mobile me gallery, is not a standard size, but I do want the print to be a standard size. How do you keep the preferred crop for viewing online but change to a standard crop for printing?
    Thanks,
    John
